Messages from the Directors

T he 2013 Summer Camp “Global Leaders” for King George International College was a huge success, just as it has been every year. Both

students and staff enjoyed this time to get to know one another and form new friendships. Students in particular had the opportunity to study English in the classroom, learn about and practice various arts and crafts, participate in a variety of sports, and even try their hand at hip-hop dancing. The fun did not end there. Participants got the chance to see the famed Grouse Mountain, visit the scenic town of Banff, try ice-skating, experience a real Canadian barbeque, go shopping and careen down waterslides!

In addition to all of the extra-curricular activities, students also got the chance to practice their English in many authentic settings. After studying English in the mornings, students were able to eat lunch in the cafeteria of the University of British Columbia, one of the country’s most prestigious universities. They also had access to the university’s classrooms, ice arena, and soccer field. In addition, many stayed in the student residences at UBC.

As Executive Director at KGIC, I along with our valued staff take great pride in making this summer camp the trip of a lifetime for our students, and we look forward to continuing this tradition for many years to come.

Best,

Tanya Scorah

T o the Global Leaders of 2013,

Each year that we host the Global Leaders Summer Camp, there are many goals that

we hope to achieve. There is one goal, however, that is always the main focus of the program. This goal quite simply is that each and every one of you that joins the program has an excellent experience, an experience that not only provides you with wonderful friendships and memories that will last a lifetime, but also an experience that will encourage growth and personal development. I hope that we have succeeded in providing this for you.

No matter what the goal, you cannot deny the adventures that we had together; we really had a wonderful time. In our first year at UBC, we enjoyed so much of what the world-renown school had to offer us: the classrooms, where you set your goals, improved your English and learned about leadership, the dorms, where you met and hung out with so many good, new friends and the beauty of the campus itself, where you explored and played so many games together.

Our adventure also took us off campus where we got to take in the shopping, sights and fun. You may have had a blast battling your friends at laser tag, speeding or stumbling around the ice skating rink or doing flips at the trampoline air park. You may have enjoyed the sights and sounds of Grouse Mountain, splashing around at Jericho Beach and the waterslides or marvelling at the technology that Science World had to offer, or maybe you appreciated the beauty of nature as you travelled through the towering Rocky Mountains and took in the gorgeous lakes and magnificent waterfalls. Whatever you did enjoy, it was a summer to remember and I truly hope for you that it an amazing experience.

Sincerely,

Chet Galpin

Yesterday, we went to a park named Extreme Air Park. I had a great time there.

The air park is a building which is full of trampolines. My friend who name is Cindy and I played

together. We jumped on the trampolines getting higher. I felt great when I get to the zenith that I

jumped. My friend Cindy laughed loudly.

Then we went upstairs and saw a lot of games on the trampoline. We went to the basketball area. A

girl who sat alone is my friend. We let her join us. I jumped on trampoline with a basketball and the

basket is in front of me. I got higher and higher just like I can touch the basket. I throw out the

basketball which I held. Definitely, I failed.

Then, my friend who was sitting on chair alone jumped on the trampoline, held the ball tightly and got

ready to throw the ball into the basket. Few seconds later, she did it! I had really a great time when I

was in this park.

What a Wonderful Day

Yesterday was a happy day. I went to lots of famous scenic spots in Vancouver. In the morning, I went to Gastown. There was an ancient steam clock. It was beautiful. It was brown. And I went to a gift shop there. The gift shop was full of people. I bought some gifts for my parents and my cousin. I bought two dream catchers, two beautiful post cards. I spent 28 dollars in buying gifts. After that, I went to Stanley Park I saw lots of strange totem pole.

I went to beach at noon. I ate hot dog for lunch. It was delicious. And I played with my friend on the beach. Some children were swimming the sea. But I didn’t. I picked up the shells with my friend. I saw many purple shell on the beach. They were beautiful.

What a wonder day!

favorite thing

My favorite thing in this camp is to go shopping. I visited Canada for the first time. I was afraid of speaking English in front of other countries people. But I could speak English pretty well. I could speak it by communicating with people when I went shopping!

Also, I found a lot of interesting things at shopping mall. They were a little expensive for me, but I bought them. For example, I bought a bag, a hat, snacks key rings and so on. I want to give these things to my family and friends. I hope that I will join this camp, and I will go shopping with my friends from other other countries. I want to speak English more easily than now!!

Thank you.

We had our lunch there and got on the bus again. Our next stop was Stanley Park. We saw Indian statues which are called totem poles.

During their daily studies at UBC, students would practice writing, grammar, reading, listening, conversation and grammar all the while studying both leadership and goal setting. Each day, students would set or review two goals. The first was their Global Leaders goal or what they wanted to achieve while studying in Canada and the second was a one-year goal or what they wanted to achieve in the next year. In addition, all the English skills studied were based on leadership qualities such as, perseverance, self-discipline, decision making, risk taking, creativity, quality, etc. Studying English in this manner helped students to not only improve their English skills, but to also improve as individuals and prepare them for future success. Finally, the study and practice helped to prepare the students for the TOEFL Junior test that was taken in their last week.

I made very many friends from all around the world. No mather China, Mexico, Korea, Spanish, or somewhere else. I understood more about them and I met a girl who is from China, she’s really nice, and beautiful… Although she only stay in Canada two weeks, and after tomorrow, they’ll leave, but I’m glad to get along with her for two weeks.

I’ll never forgot the memory about these two weeks of the things we did. Never forget we laugh, we chat, we walk together we take picture together, and you always watch my magic seriously… many many…..

I will never forget…

And I hope you, too…

I used to go to school and do things by myself, so I sometimes felt lonely and unhappy. After coming to this summer camp I go to the class with other students and I found that is more interesting than I went alone. So I try hard to do things with my friends, and when I want to buy drinks, I will ask if they want to go with me. After that, we are getting closer and closer, and we share secret with others. Being with my friends makes my heart filled with joy.

The favourite thing that I did in the summer camp is to play American footballs with my teachers and friends. We found a new way to play it. Except a person who is in the middle, each player should make a circle. They need to try their best to avoid the person who is in the middle touch the ball. This game is really exciting and enjoyable. It made me make more and more friends and speak more English. Although it was just a game, I learnt a lot from it, it made me know how to catch the chance which is close to you. And of course, I got on well with the teacher because of it. So this is the favorite thing what I did, I’ll always remember my experiences in UBC, it was wonderful.

I came to Canada on Monday. Then, I came here three days. I think Canada is a beautiful place. There are many friendly people and cute animals. The air is fresh, the sky is blue. So I like here. Yesterday, we went to the beach. First, we had hot dog, I think they are smells good and delicious. Then, I play the ocean with my friend. It makes me excited. The wind makes me relax. After four hours we come back UBC.

The day before yesterday. We went to a classroom. Then we saw the movie. The classroo m has a lot of people. But it’s quiet. The movie was very funny. And I made so many friends. I think I’m lucky. Because I can come Canada. See the great ocean. Eat the food And speak English. I believe English is a pretty language. And Canada is a pretty place.

In China, we have gorgeous mountains as well, which attract tens of thousands of visitors every year. As far as I am concerned, protecting our own nature can bring along not only beautiful land to live in, but also tremendous financial benefits.

What’s more, Canada is famous for the Rocky Mountains, which shows the whole world a image of an environmentally friendly, peaceful nation. As for China, if we take actions at once to protect every mile of our nature, a brand new Chinese image will be wildly spread all over the planet.

Generally speaking, my country China will be much better if we start valuing our nature just like Canada does. This Banff trip taught me the importance of pretending the environment. I do appreciate it.

I went on the gondola for the Banff trip. The gondola was very interesting. It runs slow. I saw many beautiful things: cute ground squirrel, green forest, transparent water and blue sky. When I saw this I was very very happy.

We went for a four-day trip last week. We took a long bus and took a lot of pictures. The most unforgettable place is that the one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. It’s the most wonderful scene I have ever seen.

Also, we saw the Ice mountains. This is the first time I saw the snow. I was happy and had a good time, even, though it was very cold.

We saw a lot of wonderful falls, too. I have never seen the falls like these in China. The air is so fresh that makes me not want to leave. The trees are all around the mountain.

On the other hand, we ate all kinds of food during the trip. But the most important thing is that I love the feeling that put my all into the nature.

I went to the Rockies with KGIC friends and teachers. I did many things during the trip. I saw very beautiful mountain, ice field, lake and river. Water color was mint. I love mint water. Also I did talent show with my friends dance with a Korean song “trouble maker”. We weren’t perfect but it was special experience that dance in front of the other country kids. I rode a boat with my friends but windy, rainy, dark weather. It was hard to comeback but we rode pedal fast so we can comeback. It was great trip.

My Trip to Banff

From July 17th to 21st, I paid a visit to the Rocky Mountains. I was shocked at the beautiful and majestic nature. Honestly, this trip reminded me of me own country China. After seeing all those natural sceneries, such as waterfalls, caves, mountains with snow and adorable wild animals, I kind of feel sorry for China.

I’ve seen many historical places of interest in China. However, despite the history, those places are terribly damaged by some people without conscience of protecting our own culture. Given the fact that most of our Chinese places of interest, including the historical ones and natural ones, have been ruined already, even we the Chinese people, don’t want to go to visit them. How horrible if we all start hating and abandoning our own culture!

So I personally think Chinese people should learn how to value and preserve our own nature and historical places of interest from Canadians.

“I really enjoy our trip, that’s funny” – said my friend. I think she really enjoyed it, cause she likes long trips in the Bus. I like it Because I love waterfalls, they are beautiful and amazing.

First and foremost, I enjoyed a blue lake, that’s brilliant!. I like that lake “cause it reminds about your eyes” – said Victoria.

Fortunately, we also visited the other waterfalls, we were really excited. I took some water from the waterfall, that was tasty! When I’ll come back to Russa, I will show a presentation about it to my classmates.

We went to Banff for a four day trip. We went to Banff by bus. We took the bus for about eighteen hours. There are some Spanish people on our bus. They laughed and sang loudly, and we could not sleep. We saw beautiful scenery during the trip. We saw some glorious waterfalls, and I saw a rainbow near a waterfall. We also saw many lakes and mountains. We took the cable car and took many photos. Canada’s scenery is different than Taiwan. It’s beautiful. This is a wonderful trip.

Trip to Banff

From July 18th to July 21st, we had a great time travelling. We visited many places and took many photos. During these days, we saw many beautiful mountains, water falls, Lakes and towns. Every day, we lived in different hotels and enjoyed food from different countries.

On the first day, we enjoyed some water falls, on the way, we saw a deer eating grass, it didn’t run away, so we took photos of it. For dinner, we had a BBQ, it was really delicious!

The next day, we saw some amazing lakes and moutains, we went to lake Louise and took a gondola. It was so exciting! We had Korean food for dinner, then, we went to the hotel.

I loved the third day very much because I went to Ghost Town. Also, I saw a bear near the forest. I felt scared when I walked in the Ghost Town, the town looks old and poor. There were many closed stores and old trains. We got on a pretend ghost train, there were many ghosts and witches on the train, all of us were screaming while we were visiting the train. I even cried! To my surprise, we would sleep in Ghost Town! I was afraid there would be a ghost in my room, in fact, there wasn’t. The place we lived in was full of flowers and grass. To be honest, Ghost Town is really a great place to visit.

Last day, we just stayed on the bus and slept. At about 6:00pm. Got back to UBC.

I will never forget the trip to Banff!

I have been in Canada for five days. I live in UBC. We can choose two club that we are interested in. I choose the Photography and the Hiking. The environment in Canadian countryside is so good. The air we breath is fresh, the water we drink is clean. The plants we saw is beautiful. So I would like to take some nice photos. We walked in the university, we cross the forest, we toured the libraries and the laboratory, they are modren and cool. There are trees around them. We saw the small artificial waterfall and creek. We saw many different kinds of birds. We saw some squirrels cross the road they aren’t scared of humans. Somebody said that is boring, but I think, it is very interesting.

This week. I joined in the face painting, an interesting activity.

In the first lesson. We all were very shy; In the second lesson everyone began to join. There is a funny thing to share.

In the second lesson, we were taught to paint tiger, so I paint a tiger on Alisa’s face, I think it’s really nice And then, I choose a beautiful pattern to paint on Tambralynn’s face, it’s also very great. Alisa said she wanted to paint on my faice; Tambralynn said she also wanted. I agreed. I felt something terrible, I just want to be painted one side of face; They painted the whole face! I opened my eyes and saw that they chose the green and yellow! What were they doing! Finally, I knew the truth. They painted a snake!

I joined the drama club yesterday. I thought I would love being in the drama club. However. I found it too difficult for me to act naturally. I wasn’t good at pretending to be someone else. When I was put into a smaller group to prepare for our own to presentation, I worried that I would be too scared and felt bad. To my astonishment, it turned out that I was so good at writing a play and creating a suitable plot. What’s more, I could communicate to my partners perfectly. In the end. our play was presented successfully.

Despite the fact that I didn’t present the play on the stage literally, I still felt very proud in all I had done for my teammates. What happened yesterday showed me that there would always be hope even when you feel depressed and uncomfortable. It reminded that I should never underestimate my talents and make the best of them. So buck up Penny!

I really enjoy going hiking because of the beautiful view we see along the way, so I still went hiking yesterday. It only took a few minutes to get to the forest, our destination. I love the air in the woods. It was clean, cool and fresh; it made me feel energetic. We played a game in the forest yesterday. We separated into two group and we had to win the game by teamwork. Our team actually won the game. It was quite fun running in the trees, and it was nice working with others.

I really had a great time yesterday. Hiking was a great exercise and a nice activity.

I like hiking because we go to a lot of beautiful places but; It was too hot and you get thirsty. I like photography and but in the first class we did not do anything. It was too hot too out the other classes of photography I like and I like hiking too.

I also improved my English during the Summer Camp. I think if I come back to Taiwan, my English will enhance. I feel confident because I can talk to foreigners. I hope I can become a better person when I come back to Taiwan.

Don’t be afraid to speak English, and always be nice to other people sothat I can make new friends and become a better person.

I met so many friends from different countries. We chat together. We go to class together. We also do many crazy things. We always get together, but some of them will go back to their country this week. So we take pictures together. We exchange each other’ apps, and keep in touch when they go back. We cherish the time together. We promise to be good friends forever.

Dormitory life was always a great time for the Global Leaders students of 2013. It was here that they could have some of the independence that is so important for continued growth and maturity in young people. It was also in the dorms and on campus that the students really got to know each other and make the friendships that they did. They would take meals together, play games together and generally have a great time. It was also here that they could have some of the independence that is so important for growth and maturity, and if they ever needed a little quiet time, they could enjoy the privacy and serenity of their own room.

The bears were so friendly and lovely. The bears have bright eyes, small ears, big head and big fat body. They are brown and they are bored. I think so. But I really like bears. I love Canada!

We went to Grouse Mountain yesterday. I think it’s a good place because there were many shows over there and gave me a excellent experience. Firstly, we took cable car to the top of the mountain and took many picture of the big blue sky and the shady trees. Secondly, we enjoyed a performance. Then we ate sandwiches and juice for lunch and watched a funny competition. Finally, we not only watched the eagle show, but also understood the abilities of the birds. This activity brought me a lot of fun, and happiness, I think it’s very interesting and unforgettable. So I hope I will join more activities.

Grouse Mountain, a place which contains many natural animals and elements. The fog here makes the mountain mysterious, however, behind the fog, there’s also a couple of mysterious but famous people: Indians. Their spirit is also very impressive

The indians’ cabin is very small and simple. Scary masks and strange paintings even made it a bit mysterious. However, the performance is really awesome and I think the key to the performance is listening and respecting.

Martin Luther King has said everyone is equal in the world, and so has the Indians’ spirit. The Indians think people should listen to others as a respect, especially parents. As teenagers, we always quarrel with parents. But thinking about many of those, some quarrels are really unreasonable, just some misunderstanding! That problem is just we’re not annoyed to listen to our parents. Just calm down, then everything will be easy to accept.Indians are very original, no cellphones or high-technology machines, however I figure out that their spirit is very pure, perhaps for some people, they even feel not acceptable. That’s why I think the trip meaningful.
