PAGE | 1 Kamehameha Schools 2013 Digital Citizenship Poster Contest What is a Digital Footprint? All of the information online about a person, either posted by that person or others, creates that individual’s digital footprint. Digital footprints are also called digital tattoos because similar to regular tattoos, digital footprints are nearly permanent! Think Before you Post While being online and posting photos and comments can be a great way to keep friends and family current, there can be negative consequences to not being careful about what’s posted. Posted information conveys messages about the individual. What does your digital footprint say about you? It is not uncommon for employers and college admissions staff to conduct online searches when evaluating applicants. Digital Footprint Reminders 1. Content posted online is persistent, and no longer under your control. It can be searched, copied, altered and passed on. 2. Envision your desired digital footprint. Keep this in mind when posting information online. 3. Content uploaded to the internet is public. Relatives, employers, and college admissions staff can access the information. 4. Information posted online may not offer an accurate portrayal of a person, yet it can affect how that person is treated. Digital Footprint=First Impression. FAST FACTS 49% Percentage of parents very concerned about their child’s reputation management online. 44% Percentage of parents very concerned about their child’s online presence impacting future opportunities.
