Outdoor living areas have become so much more than additions to the home, and the traditional backyard has been transformed into a multi season extension of the home’s interior. The essentials of interior design---space planning, scale and proportion, color, and texture---integrate fur-niture, lighting, flooring, textiles and accessories. A similar mix of artful elements plays out in an outdoor living environment. Landscaping is no longer considered an afterthought, but can be pivotal to the overall design.The concept of outdoor living has been becoming broader since the 1970s, and has encompassed an orchestration of landscapes, hardscapes and an evolving view of approaches to exterior design. Outdoor kitchens mirror the attention given to their interior counterparts. Living areas are no longer a hodgepodge of serviceable but undistinguished furniture and sturdy, if predictable fabrics. Pots of flowers, a couple of benches and a trellis have long given way to lush landscapes, multi faceted hardscapes and sophisticated outdoor light-ing. Landscaping can be over the top or understated. But creatively con-ceived and executed landscaping is crucial to an outdoor living space that gets high marks for aesthetics and functionality. Few professional landscapers would dissuade homeowners from don-ning gardening gloves and getting to work planting and pruning in the yard. But a lack of knowledge and experience can cost time and money, leading many homeowners to admit they wish they had sought profes-sional advice. “Too often people invest a lot of money in plants but want to cut back on reconditioning the soil as a way to save money. My biggest challenge is to convince them to condition the soil before they begin any extensive landscaping. Another problem is inattention to irrigation, drainage and fertilization. If landscaping fails, contributing reasons usually are improper

watering and weed control,” says Tony Karimi, president of My Pool and Patio and of Cardinal Nursery and Landscaping. “And, in most cases, a lawn needs to be seeded at least once a year because of droughts.

“Too often people invest a lot of money in plants but want to cut back on reconditioning the soil as a way to save money. My biggest challenge is to convince them to condition the soil before they begin any extensive

Most pros think in terms of a combination of landscaping goals. “The idea is to have the landscape change throughout the year, with something blooming all the time. We make sure you’ll have flowers from spring un-til November. We build height differences and variations in color into gar-den design. Of course, we design landscaping to complement an individual home. People find it very helpful when we show them a 3D design. We visu-ally walk them through the landscape, showing what the plants will look like in five years with the hardscape and house in the background,” says Karimi. He and his team interweave different types of stone paving into the landscape design, using natural stone such as cobblestone, limestone or slate as frequently as possible. He sees a trend toward man made products for hardscapes. “We look at the lines of the house, the layout of the yard and how it flows, then create a patio and outdoor living area to complement the house. Each house demands its own application of products. For exam-

ple, a house in the woods might use different textures, sizes and colors than a suburban home or a contemporary house,” says Bluegrass Pavers president Craig Breneman. He counsels clients that a well installed hardscape will last a lifetime but that the greatest design in the world won’t last if not installed cor-rectly. “The site has to be inspected to determine if it will stand up to the system. Proper excavation is key. And some systems have extensive drain-age underneath, with a series of lines, sleeves and pipes,” he notes. He attributes many mistakes to issues with slopes and drainage, explaining that with the rain that comes into paver systems, ninety percent runs off and doesn’t soak through. “Stay with the specs of a hardscape product. Don’t take shortcuts. If you do, it may look good for a year or two, but in five or ten years down the road you’ll have problems. Like anything else, it’s all about quality,” says Hill.

User friendly guidelines for hardscapes:

• Work with, not against the architecture of the house and its relation to the property. Particular accents and angles should be thoughtfully incor-porated into the hardscape plan.

• Extend visual lines from your home’s corner, doors, and windows to create shapes that integrate your landscape design into the architecture.

• When deciding on a size for your outdoor “rooms”, look at more than the size of your chairs and tables – think about the space you’ll need when chairs are pulled out, and other factors such as areas where guests will mingle.

• Design areas of visual interest off your major axis points. The sight line from your back door or kitchen window should lead to a beautiful flow-ering tree, an intimate sitting area, or vine-covered gazebo. These focal points guide the eye.

planting the Landscape

Kevin Young, of Land Design and Development, warns clients not to choose plant material that is too large, or may become too large, for a space and may not be appropriate for growing conditions. He also urges them to select plants that will have year round interest. “It’s also important to take into consideration the architecture of the house. For example, typical foundation planting of boxwoods and evergreens at the corner of the house wouldn’t be the best choice for a contemporary home. Going with something that would be more of a focal point would be a better idea,” he suggests. “Some of our clients are from other parts of the country. When they move here they may want to have the tropical plants they were familiar with in Florida. But it doesn’t quite work that way. It’s usually better to use native plants. For example, a boxwood grown locally will do better than a boxwood brought from a greenhouse in Arizona. Sure, sometimes we buy plants that aren’t available locally but we have to baby them for a while and they never do as well as native plants,” says Karimi. Young supports the use of native plants because they are less reliant on an irriga-tion system. “It’s also better to use native trees and shrubs because they’re resistant to drought and freezing cold. You don’t want to plant a tree that’s unlikely to make it,” says David Mindel, partner at Mindel, Scott & Associates. Scott Hannah, a partner at Heritage Engineering, knows the value of native plants, but also sees the benefits of plants that are not native to the region. “There are some great grasses that aren’t native to Kentucky; maybe they’re even from a different country. But they’re very efficient with water and serve a nice purpose in the extreme summer weather we have in Louisville,” he remarks. When designing a landscape, he likes diversity in the sizes of plant materials and believes it’s important to have color throughout the year, such as dogwoods that flower in the spring, hydrangeas for summer, ma-ple trees for fall color, and hollys with red berries in the winter. “Bark as a texture can be beautiful on its own,” Hannah says. “Good landscaping takes into account how tall a tree or shrub will grow when it matures. What looks good in a two gallon container may not turn out to be at all what you want. Also, be careful about planting trees under power lines because LG&E may trim and maintain them so that they don’t cause power lines to come down,” warns Mindel.

He also guides clients toward soil preparation. “You must identify your type of soil. Some plant materials like acidic soil; others don’t. Also, some soils hold water in and that can be a problem because certain plants don’t like their feet being wet. So you need to be aware of the drainage. Whenever you plant a tree or landscape material, you should prepare the soil around the tree with fertilizer and peat moss. You don’t want to go overboard with fertilizer, but if you fertilize appropriately and have a good prepared bed.

“Although this region is rich with the resource of water, many areas of the country are not and have focused on water efficient landscaping. I think we will see more emphasis paid to it in this area in the future,” says Hannah. “We are also probably going to see the shrinking of the footprint of traditional lawns. We love our lawns here, and I think that’s okay. But I believe we are going to see some less traditional landscaping such as rain barrels. Rain barrels store rain water from the roof to use for watering gardens and lawns. Cardinal Nursery and Landscaping notes that stored water also may be used for flushing toilets, washing cars and in washing machines. Since introducing the concept of rain barrels in April 2006, the Metro-politan Sewer District (MSD) has placed about 400 throughout the com-munity, with each barrel providing storage for 58 gallons of water.

Cardinal Nursery’s green initiatives include rain gardens, which are planted depressions that allow rainwater runoff from roofs, driveways, walkways and compacted lawn areas to be absorbed rather than flowing into storm drains and streams. If not captured, the water can collect lawn chemicals, pesticides and an alarming array of toxic material that can harm fish and animals, destroy vegetation and threaten residential and recreational areas with pollutants. Rain gardens filter harmful substances, help alleviate flooding and drainage problems, and assist in replenish-ing ground water supply. Another welcome benefit is that rain gardens reduce the frequency of mowing. The Metropolitan Sewer District reports that rain gardens have the capability of handling storm water produced in an average rainfall. One inch of rain, covering a 30’ x 50’ roof equates to 935 gallons of water. How to create your own rain garden. MSD offers this advice for homeowners:

• Understand how storm water flows through your yard and identify areas in which it causes problems.

prevent water seepage into the basement, but close enough to the source of the water runoff so that water can flow into the garden bed. However, the rain garden should not be located in an area that retains water for more than 24 hours. The rain garden should be placed on a flat or slightly sloping area. The gardens generally function best in full or partial sun. But, depending on the types of plants you select, gardens can flourish in a shady area.

• Evaluate the soil where you are considering placing the rain garden. If the soil is composed of a high percentage of clay, storm water will not soak in. You may need to amend the soil to improve infiltration. To have your soil tested or to learn about amending the soil, MSD suggests con-tacting the Jefferson County Extension Service (http://ces.ca.uky.edu/jefferson).

• Plan your rain garden based on your budget and your ability to manage the site. The rain garden needs to be wide enough to spread water evenly over the entire area, reaching all the plants. To achieve this, make sure the downspout extension reaches far enough into the garden to dispense the water. The rain garden should be dug deep enough to drain within 24 hours. Most residential rain gardens are 6” to 12” deep.

• Design the rain garden so that plants are placed in an aesthetically pleasing layout. Remember to take into consideration the amount of sun required by each plant. The garden can be accessorized with things such as rocks, garden ornaments and mulch. Native plants offer many advantages and are available in many colors, sizes and textures. Non-native plants may be used as long as they are not invasive, such as Purple Loosestrife, Crown Vetch, Wintercreeper, English Ivy and Burning Bush.

Scott Hill, president of Hill Pavers, considers the Belgard Chal-lenge the ideal setting in which to demonstrate the practically un-limited possibilities to incorporate unexpected elements into outdoor living. Although he’s keeping many of his plans under wraps until the doors of the show open, he hints at a design that incorporates foun-tains, a firepit, walls, sitting area, an outdoor kitchen, furniture and a few surprises.

“When people walk into our area they won’t believe they’re at the Expo Center. We’re going to have extensive landscaping, stone pedes-tals and columns, a firepit, pizza oven, bar and grill, pergola, seating walls, and a patio. I want people to be able to have fun envisioning what could be designed outside their own home,” says Tony Karimi, president of My Pool and Patio. “It’s going to be beautiful but very achievable.”

“Louisville has done an excellent job with the buying local movement,” says Summer Auer-bach, president of the Louisville Independent Business Association (LIBA). Food is perhaps one of the most obvious and most appreciated components of the buy local movement. “As people become more educated about where their food comes from and the reality of com-mercial farming methods, they’re taking more interest in what they eat and what types of businesses they want to support,” comments Auerbach, who is owner of Rainbow Blossom Natural Markets. “At Rainbow Blossom, we’ve always bought local products because we love the variety and the people who sell them. It’s been our little niche and I think we were kind of the pioneers in local foods. Now there are more and more farms that are providing us with great local items.” Restaurants are at the forefront of the local food movement as farm-to-table plays an in-creasingly important role in local menus. Kathy Cary of Lily’s was one of the chefs who led the way in educating diners bite by delicious bite about the wealth of local food sources. Jim

Gerhardt of Limestone, Coby Ming of Har-vest, Michael Crouch of Bistro 1860, Bruce Ucán of Mayan Café, and Shawn Ward of Jack Fry’s have garnered star studded reputations for their commitment to and innovative use of lo-cal ingredients “I support many local growers and farm-ers. It’s a no brainer to use the best and fresh-est ingredients I can get. Some of the ones I rely on are Sapori d’Italia, Capriole Farms and Creekstone Meats. And I love the duck and chicken eggs from my father, Charles Moore, in Shelbyville,” says Volare chef Josh Moore. Although his menus feature a variety of prod-ucts from area farms, his dishes are redolent with produce from his own farm where his bounty includes squash, peppers, onions, potatoes, broc-coli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, swiss chard, kale and 30 varieties of heirloom tomatoes. “Farming is intensive. But it’s definitely a labor of love,” he remarks with obvious pride. “It’s very interesting to see that the Louisville market is sort of on the cutting edge of the lo-cal food movement. I don’t think bigger, fancier places such as New York are able to do any bet-

ter than we are in terms of high quality, locally grown food products,” says Ron Mikulak, food critic for The Courier-Journal. In recent years, farmers’ markets have sprouted up throughout Louisville and offer produce and meats as well as condiments and sauces, foods to-go and even an array of offer-ings that are cooked on the spot. If a trip to the farmers’ market is part of your food shopping agenda, you’ll likely want to check out Community Supported Agriculture (CSA). Members of CSAs generally pay the farmers for weekly shares of the harvest. Prod-ucts available at individual farms vary but may include vegetables, dairy, meat, baked goods and flowers. Depending on the CSA, members may be able to pick up their items at the farm or from distribution points in the area. “People are becoming more educated about food systems, where their food comes from, how it gets from Point A to Point B, and what has to happen in that time period. They’re looking at what’s in their food as well as how it’s grown and the time it takes to transport it. If it takes two to three weeks to transport

The long timeline also means the food will lose its freshness,” says Kathy Shadburne Reed, owner of Maple Morning Farm in Louisville. Shadbourne Reed stresses that there’s a learning curve for buying local. “People get spoiled by groceries and have to change their thinking. Once you educate yourself and un-derstand the seasonality of food, you can plan what your family will have each month and build meals around that,” she advises. While fruits, vegetables, eggs and some meats are of-fered through many CSAs, Shadburne Reed enjoys talking about what else is available. Fish (locally caught cat fish from Kentucky lake), bread, canned foods, apple juice and ci-der, beer and wine---they’re all local and avail-able through CSAs.If all the talk about local foods is making you want to grow your own, you’re not alone. “There’s been a major influx of new gar-deners. The majority of our focus is on edible products. We even have customers who want to grow pineapples and papayas. But we try to be realistic and don’t want them to get there hopes too high,” laughs Chloé Guenther, re-tail manager at Bunton’s Seed. “Some people just want to see the action happening and to

be part of growing something, even if they don’t need to stock their pantry. I know some enthusiastic gardeners who live alone, yet they buy 20 tomato plants.” She encourages the novice gardener to start with greens---kales, lettuce, spinach---because they don’t produce a fruit and are easier and less disappointing to grow. She also suggests that people who are new to gardening start with plants, noting that seed starting has many variables. “We sell loads of strawberry plants. They’re easy to get going but are difficult to take care of in winter. Blackberries and blueberries may not be as easy to grow but they’re very reward-ing,” says Guenther. “Our herb selection has grown immensely. We used to carry thyme, oregano and basil. Now we’re getting requests for sorrel, lovage, lemongrass and verbena.” Also, think about what you want to do with the produce. Do you intend to harvest directly to the table or do you want to pre-serve for the off season? Or do you just want the fun of gardening? Once you bite into your newly picked spin-ach or blueberry, you may be hooked on gar-dening. Welcome to the local food movement.

Are you the type of person who squishes first and asks questions later, when it comes to bugs? As it turns out, there are good bugs that can make your garden flourish and keep the bad bugs away naturally. Susan Reigler, lecturer in biology at Indiana University Southeast, points to predatory beetles and the praying mantis as gardeners’ friends. “It’s also nice to plant flowers that attract butterflies because butterflies help with pest control and they’re pretty. Try to plant native material so you don’t create invading species problems,” she advises. “There are beneficial bugs that are well known pollinators, such as honeybees and bumble bees, but there are also critters like ladybugs, the minute pirate bug Orius, and the Halictied bee which is a ground dwell-ing native pollinator,” says Blair Leano-Helvey, owner of Entomology So-lutions. Not only are ladybugs cute, they’re a formidable weapon against aphids. Also good for combating aphids is the aphidoletes, which is a little midge, a bright orange maggot in the immature stage. Parasitoid wasps have an unfortunately intimidating name but they are very tiny, don’t sting and kill the bugs you don’t want in your garden by laying their eggs inside or on top of the host.

But bad bugs abound and they can be big trouble for your garden. Thrips are a huge problem and cause serious cosmetic damage. If you’ve seen brown strips on roses, you’ve seen the work of thrips. Leano-Helvey’s real nemesis is the white fly, which attacks tomatoes. She also watches out for spider mites, grubs, fleas, chiggers and aphids.

garden pest control Advice Her first advice for home gardeners is to be proactive and figure out the real problem in the garden. “Too many times homeowners misiden-tify a bug problem. Also, unfortunately, they are often too quick to run for a chemical solution. Some chemicals are host-specific but a lot of people rely on broad spectrum chemicals that kill a wide range of insects. Interestingly, chronic problems are frequently the result of over spraying. Years ago, harmful garden insects were controlled biologically. But then DDT was developed; it was cheap, easy to use and killed everything.

There are many alternatives to chemicals. I like to help people have a garden that isn’t sprayed and provides a nectar source to help beneficial bugs with egg-laying and a place for refuge,” she says. Biological control is most effective when pests are treated before heavy infestation occurs. “In my opinion, there are pros and cons to biological sprays. The sprays are either a fungus or bacteria that are specific to a pest. Pests can become immune to biological sprays but they can’t become immune to beneficial insects. In biological programs there are times you have to spray. For those cases, I suggest the use of an insecticidal soap or something that doesn’t have a long residual and isn’t highly toxic,” says Leano-Helvey.

When she advises homeowners on pest control alternatives for gar-dens, she educates them about increasing the population of beneficial bugs and pollinators. “Among my favorite beneficial bugs are nematodes, microscopic round worms that are also known as infective nematodes because they attack pests when they’re in an immature stage in the soil. The nematodes are very affordable and are excellent to use in the spring and early fall to get pests that are trying to overwinter. “If you’re planning on using biological control and are currently using chemical pesticides, it’s important to determine if the pesticide is com-patible with biological control,” she says.

Checklist for Hiring a Registered Builder or Registered RemodelorIt’s also important that you become familiar with the business of a prospec-tive remodeler or builder and that his or her experience relates to your individual project. You might find it helpful to use this checklist when choosing a Registered Remodelor or Builder member of the Home Builders Association of Louisville.

q Check to be sure that you’re talking to a Registered Remodelor or Builder.

q Check to be sure the remodelor or builder has a permanent business location and a good reputation with local banks and suppliers.

q Ask how long they have been in the remodeling or building business. You want to be sure they’ll be around after the project is complete to service warranties and to address issues that could develop. It usually takes three to five years to establish a financially sound business.

q Check with the Better Business Bureau to learn of any complaints.

q Inquire whether the remodeler or builder has sufficient workers’ compensation and general liability insurance. If not, you may be liable for any construction- or remodeling-related accidents on your premises. It’s a good idea to ask for proof of insurance.

q Check references.

q Check for quality of workmanship and materials of previous projects.

q Be sure you are able to easily communicate with the person.

q Ask for a complete and clearly written contract. Review it carefully.

q Be cautious of unusually low-priced bids. If the remodelor or builder is unable to pay for materials and labor as the project proceeds, there could be potential problems.

q Look for these logos:

When considering building a new home or remodeling an existing home, it’s critical to select the right individual or company for your individual project. It is a decision that will help determine the quality and cost of your remodel or new construction. The Home Builders Association of Louisville (HBAL) has Registered Remodelor and Registered Builder members who:

• Are informed about new products.

• Are linked to a network of industry professionals on the local, state and national level.

• Have a commitment to continuing education.

• Have the ability to address special building issues/techniques.

• Have access to a conciliation process should problems arise that cannot be easily resolved.

• Have experience in the home or commercial construction profession for a specified period of time.

• Have demonstrated financial and on-site responsibilities.

• Are a full-time professional who derives his or her principal income from construction, remodeling or related real estate activities.

• Have submitted the names of previous customers as references

• Have Registered Remodeler or Builder sponsors with personal knowledge of their remodeling/construction activities and business integrity.

• Must have acceptable credit history.

• Appear before a committee of Registered Builders for a personal interview.

• Must agree to take part in continuing education.

• Must agree to abide by the Code of Ethics of the HBAL.
