Quantum Series Electronic Engines Proven in Light Load, Diesel Electric Applications

The popularity of more fuel efficient propulsion systems, such as diesel electric, continues to increase as vessel owners and operators demand lower operating costs. Engines in diesel electric genset packages often operate in light load conditions for extended periods of time as a result of dynamic positioning redundancy requirements, vessel design and calm operating (sea) conditions. Reduced load demands have led diesel engine manufacturers to rethink engine design such that engines are capable of operating at maximum load, full power and at low load.

Cummins has integrated global diesel electric customer requirements into new product design. The Quantum Series MCRS auxiliary engines are designed for light load operation, while also being capable of providing full power to meet the variable power demands of diesel electric applications. The QSK engines’ Modular Common Rail (MCRS) fuel system featuring closed nozzle injectors and electronic control system allow for speed stability at all load and speed conditions, making these engines exceptionally capable of low load operation.

Many fleets are already experiencing the benefits of QSK-powered diesel electric genset packages... Harvey Gulf’s fleet includes two 292’ PSVs powered by four QSK60-DM MCRS 1900 kW diesel electric generator sets coupled to water-cooled generators. Built at Eastern Shipbuilding in Panama City, Florida and currently operating in the Gulf of Mexico, the DP2 vessels are the first to have the ABS ENVIRO + notation. A third vessel will soon be launched and operating in Alaska.

Reducing Emissions Using Aftertreatment

In recent years, engine manufacturers and their engineering teams have invested significantly in emissions reducing technology. As regulations particularly in the U.S. and Europe became more stringent, marine diesel engine design changed radically with the introduction of electronic fuel systems. With further emissions reductions imminent, some vessel operators are taking their commitment to the environment and emissions reduction to the next level with the aid of aftertreatment technology.

The Dutch inland waterway cargo ship M/V Anda is powered by a pair of Cummins QSK38-M engines. The Modular Common Rail Fuel System enables the engine to meet EU Stage IIIa, IMO Tier II and U.S. EPA Tier 2 emissions requirements, with the added benefit of reduced noise and vibration, idle stability and improved low-end torque.

The ship’s owner, J. Verdonk have taken emission reduction a step further by adding an aftertreatment system to the engine exhaust. Supplied by Emitech, a multi component aftertreatment system consisting of a Selective Catalytic Reduction Catalyst (SCR) and a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) was installed on each engine.

In January 2010 tests were carried out to measure the emissions of the two engines with and without aftertreatment. The results were spectacular. In tests carried out by TNO Industrie en Techniek according to ISO 8178 protocol, the aftertreatment system showed that NOx emissions were reduced by almost 90%, bringing NOx emissions well below the norm of 2 g/kWh for new ships and leading to the M/S Anda being named the “cleanest vessel in the Netherlands” and perhaps all of Europe.

From K to Quantum Series: the Cummins Product Evolution

Built on the well-earned reputation of the K Series as the proven leaders in high hour, high load factor applications, Cummins Quantum Series engines are quickly earning an exceptional reputation in their own right. The QSK Series was introduced in 2005 to meet U.S. EPA Tier 2 emissions standards. Customers can now look forward to the 2013 release of the next generation of Quantum Series products, designed to meet more stringent EPA Tier 3 emissions standards with a lower cost of operation and optimized fuel consumption.

Like Cummins, the F/V Time Bandit is undergoing an evolution of its own… The Time Bandit operates in the Bering Sea – some of the most treacherous fishing ground on the planet – making the safety of the crew paramount. Built in 1991 and powered by two 425 hp KT19-M engines, the Homer, Alaska-based fishing vessel’s captains Andy and Johnathan Hillstrand have long relied on the reliability and durability of Cummins to make their living and get them home safely.

With an impressive hold capacity of 120,000 pounds for king crab, 175,000 for snow crab and 370,000 for salmon, the Time Bandit will soon undergo a repower with the installation of two environmentally friendly QSK19-Ms. The engines will be fit with the ELIMINATOR, a self cleaning centrifuge that replaces all disposable canisters on the engine – furthering reducing the vessel’s carbon footprint. C Command Elite panels will also be installed to help the captains maximize the benefit of their new engines by providing instantaneous access to operating data.

Designed by John Hillstrand Sr. and custom-built by his family, the Time Bandit is now operated by John Sr.’s sons Andy, Johnathan and Neal Hillstrand from the Discovery Channel’s hit reality show “The Deadliest Catch,” – and with the new QSK19 engines, this great fishing vessel will be ready for the next generation of Hillstrands.

The right technology.

Cummins offers a range of engines with both mechanical and electronic fuel systems compliant to global emission requirements. This allows us to meet a variety of customer needs while distinguishing ourselves from other engine manufacturers who are offering only electronic emissionized products.

Mechanical Product Line

Cummins customers have communicated significant interest in mechanical products for IMO Tier II based on preference, the crew’s comfort level in servicing the product and operator requirements—some operators simply do not need or require the features available on an electronic product. In addition, the mechanical product has lower initial costs and is a great option for fleets already powered by Cummins mechanical products who are seeking to standardize their fleet.

■ B, K, N and V products with mechanical fuel systems■ Simple, proven design■ Easy to service■ Lower cost of ownership■ Basic functionality and monitoring■ Marine Classification Society approved

Quantum System Electronic Product Line

Electronic engines offer numerous benefits, especially where competent product support is available and the fuel supply is understood and consistent. Electronic engines allow engine fueling to be precisely measured and optimized, which can significantly reduce smoke when operating in transient conditions. Because fuel injection can be specifically controlled at varying loads and engine speed, fuel consumption can be optimized – not only at full power, but also at partial load conditions. Perhaps the most beneficial feature of an electronic engine is the ability to capture and interpret engine parameters specific to the vessel’s operating pattern.

■ Quantum Series with electronic fuel systems■ Advanced functionality, options and features■ World class durability■ Proven electronics■ Enhanced engine protection■ Marine Classification Society approved

15

How do you know which product is right for you and your application? The following factors may play a role in your decision:

Power. The Quantum Series product may be the ideal choice for customers who require increased power density and for applications that require higher power than what’s currently available for the PT product.

Emissions Requirements. Less restrictive regulation of auxiliary engines used in emergency applications makes it possible to use mechanical products, including non-certified and Tier I products.

Sociability. Benefits of the Cummins Quantum Series engines include significantly reduced smoke, noise and vibration, making it an ideal choice for applications where sociability is essential.

Fuel Quality. Higher tolerance to global fuels makes a product with a mechanically controlled fuel system a good choice if your vessel will be operating in an area where high quality fuels are in short supply.

Incentives. If you are operating in a region with incentives for lower than mandated emissions, a Quantum Series engine might be the answer.

Monitoring Requirements. Mechanical PT products can satisfy basic monitoring requirements; while electronic engines provide advanced prognostic and diagnostic information.

Fleet Standardization. Fleets already powered by Cummins mechanical product line can now obtain emissionized mechanical products from Cummins for new projects and repowers.

Making the right choice.

Available as an aftermarket kit for K Series engines or installed as a factory option on Quantum Series MCRS engines, CENTINEL eliminates or extends oil change intervals by burning used oil and replacing it with clean oil.

The CENTINEL Advanced Engine Oil Management System automates oil changes. While the equipment is running, CENTINEL monitors the engine’s duty cycle. At precise intervals, it bleeds off a small amount of used oil and sends it to the fuel tank, where it blends with diesel fuel and is burned during combustion.

CENTINEL allows equipment to work up to 4,000 hours between service events. Depending on the duty cycle, that could eliminate 15-20 oil changes from current maintenance schedules.

■ Reduces downtime and the cost of oil change service■ Reduces the risk of engine damage due to poor oil change

maintenance practice

Available on the KTA38, KTA50, and all QSK MCRS engines, ELIMINATOR is a combination full-flow and centrifugal system that incorporates a permanent stainless steel core that eliminates the need for disposable oil filters.

ELIMINATOR consists of a two-stage filter media system. The first filter screens for particles as small as 20 microns, while a centrifugal separator constantly spins, depositing the heaviest particles on a replaceable liner.

Because ELIMINATOR uses the oil pressure in the lubricating system to spin the centrifugal separator, there is no additional load on the engine, with no drain on power or fuel economy. This option lowers the cost of operation by:

■ Eliminating the recurring cost and maintenance of spin-on filters■ Reducing downtime for filter changes■ Eliminating disposal cost of used filter elements■ Improving filtration and reducing component wear which can extend

overhaul periods■ Extending oil change intervals when used concurrently with oil

sampling and CENTINEL

ELIMINATOR satisfies most Marine Classification Society requirements for duplex filters.

Available on QSK38 and QSK50 engines, Pre-Lube with Quick Evac is an engine-mounted pump with off-engine mounted controls. Pre-Lube reduces engine wear by providing lubrication prior to engine start, while Quik Evac reduces oil change time by quickly removing oil from the engine oil pan. This option is available in 24 volt DC only.

■ Empties the oil sump in 60 seconds, allowing operators to consistently complete regular oil changes in 30 minutes or less

■ Enables clean, fast and safe oil changes by pumping used oil directly into a containment barrel to prevent technician contact with lube oil

Fuel Consumption

One of the most commonly asked customer questions is, “How much fuel will that engine use in my boat?” The answer may be derived using any of the following four fuel consumption prediction methods:

■ Advertised fuel consumption at rated power (single point)■ Average fuel consumption over a standard test cycle■ Average fuel consumption over a specific duty cycle■ Surrogate vessel comparison

The fuel consumption value published in the Marine Products Guide is the average fuel consumption over standard cycles recommended by the International Standard Organization (ISO 8178 E3 standard test cycle for propulsion applications and D2 for auxiliary applications). It represents the fuel consumption for a typical marine customer, as defined by ISO.

ISO 8178 E3 Standard Test Cycle*

Mode % HP % RPM Weight Factor

1 100 100 0.20

2 75 91 0.50

3 50 80 0.15

4 25 63 0.15

* For “propeller-law operated main and propeller-law operated auxiliary engine” applications

ISO 8178 D2 Standard Test Cycle

Mode % HP % RPM Weight Factor

1 100 100 0.05

2 75 100 0.25

3 50 100 0.30

4 25 100 0.30

5 10 100 0.10

*For “constant-speed auxiliary engine” applications

Alternatively, average fuel consumption at rated speed can be obtained from the engine datasheets available on marine.cummins.com. If you

have any questions, please contact your local Cummins professional or email [email protected].

Fuel consumption values from engine control modules and displayed on instrument panels are not absolute. Tolerance varies with speed and load, but is generally less than +/-5% when operating within 30% of rated power.

Please note: fuel consumption calculations are based on fuel of 35° API gravity at 16°C (60°F) having an LHV of 42,780 KJ/KG (18,390 BTU/lb) when used at 29°C (85°F) and weighing 838.9 g/liter (7.001 lb/US gal) with LTA when available.

Product Certification: Emissions

Cummins engines are designed to provide customers with the highest level of reliability, durability, safety and performance. At the same time, we are committed to meeting or exceeding clean air standards worldwide. A summary of current and near-term regulations is listed below.

IMO - The International Maritime Organization issued Regulation 13 to Annex VI of MARPOL 73/78, enforceable beginning January 1, 2000 for diesel engines above 130 kW (174 HP) installed on a vessel. This regulation exempts diesel engines used exclusively in emergency applications.

EPA - The Environmental Protection Agency regulates exhaust emissions of diesel engines installed on U.S. flagged / registered vessels.

The chart is displayed for reference purposes only. See the appropriate regulation for specific details and options related to emission standards and implementation dates.

EU - The Nonroad Mobile Machinery Directive regulates exhaust emissions from various mobile sources in the European Community. As of January 1, 2007, the scope of the Directive extends to those propulsion and auxiliary engines used aboard inland waterway vessels. The Directive contains a phased implementation based upon per cylinder displacement and application of the subject engine.

CCNR - In July 2007 (vessel in-service), the Central Commission for the Navigation of the Rhine (CCNR) implemented its Stg II emissions regulation for diesel engines. In an amendment to the CCNR regulation, EC type certification according to the directives of the European Union is considered equal to the CCNR’s Stg II certification. Therefore, engines certified to the EC Nonroad Mobile Machinery Directive will be accepted without direct certification to the CCNR regulation.

The following designations will appear on subsequent pages to identify the regulation that the engine will be certified to or compliant with once placed on the market:

■ NC - rating is not compliant with or not applicable to current regulations■ IMO1 - IMO Tier I compliant; Engine International Air Pollution Prevention

(EIAPP) certificates available from American Bureau of Shipping or U.S. EPA■ IMO2 - IMO Tier II compliant; Engine International Air Pollution Prevention

(EIAPP) certificates available from American Bureau of Shipping or U.S. EPA■ EPA2 - EPA Tier 2 certified■ EPA3 - EPA Tier 3 certified■ EU3a - Nonroad Mobile Machinery Directive Stage IIIa certified

Certain ratings may not be available for sale in all areas due to emissions compliance. Other local certifications may be available.
