PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEWelcome to the annual report for our 21st year, a year that was an active and transfor-mational one for the Mohawk Hudson Land Conservancy. More strategically selected lands have been preserved forever. We have increased public access at new preserves. We have formed important partnerships with businesses, foundations, and local and state governments. These partnerships provided new resources for organizational growth, preservation and endowment. 2013 was also a year of signicant investment by MHLC’s board, advisory council and individual mem-bers who supported our transformation. These investments have allowed MHLC to grow from a small land trust to an organiza-tion that is prepared to take a leadership role in strategic regional conservation.

In the end we will conserve only what we love. We will love only what we understand. We will understand only what we are taught. — Baba Dioum

CONSERVATION HIGHLIGHTSGuthrie Donation In perhaps MHLC’s most visible acquisition to date, we received a gift of 8.5 acres along the Helderberg Escarpment, just above the hamlet of New Salem, from Catherine Pring in memory of her mother, Stephanie Guthrie. Had these few acres been developed, the face of the Helderberg Escarp-ment would have been changed forever. Although access to the parcel is challenging for public use, the high visibility makes this an important land protection project.

Jeff Leon EasementThis conservation easement, MHLC’s rst in Montgomery County, perma-nently preserves the 118 acre Strawberry Fields Farm and Nature Preserve. The easement on this property, owned by former MHLC board member, Jeff Leon, furthers Jeff’s commitment to creating a sanctuary on the land he cherishes. Jeff’s deep involvement in conservation runs the gamut from sustainable living to the sustainability of conservation organizations. Jeff serves on the Board of the Land Trust Alliance in New York.

Bozen Kill – Albany CountyThrough the years, Albany County has worked with MHLC toward the creation of a protected area along the Bozen Kill Ravine between Altamont and Delanson. To date we have received ve properties through the County, allowing us to protect 58 acres of this remote and rugged area. An additional donation in Knox in 2013 added another 5 acres of conser-vation land. New projects for 2014 will dramatically expand our protec-tion of the area and begin connecting many of these properties. Stay tuned!

CONNECTING COMMUNITIESHELDERBERG HUDSON RAIL TRAILThe year brought great progress along the Helderberg Hudson Rail Trail. Dedicated efforts by the Friends of the Rail Trail (FORT) committee and numerous volunteers resulted in the opening of the rst section of trail in Voor-heesville, providing 1.9 miles of new trail for public use between Voorheesville Avenue and Upper Font Grove Road in Slingerlands. We look forward to working with Albany County in 2014 to open the Slingerlands portion of the trail and take critical steps toward the creation of the rst bikeable sections in 2015.

ACTIVITIES & EVENTSIt was another busy year at MHLC with activities ranging from our successful “Bounty of the Forest” gala to the many hikes led by board member Dodie Seagle. The Summer Solstice on the rail trail brought hundreds of visitors to enjoy a variety of activities on the year’s longest day. Stewards Circle events included visits to easements in Schenectady County and an introduction to hop farm-ing at the Helderberg Hop Farm in Voorheesville. Our annual meeting and awards dinner recognized Scott Lewendon for his fantastic leadership and guidance on the Helderberg Hudson Rail Trail, and the husband and wife team of Nathan Giordano and Tara Murphy for their dedicated stewardship work at the Wolf Creek Falls Preserve in Knox.

With the ribbon cutting, the Voorheesville section of the Helderberg Hudson Rail Trail ofcially opened in December. Brad Fischer of Albany County makes the cut while New Scotland Supervisor Tom Dolin (left) and Albany County Legislator Herb Reilly (right) look on.

OPENING PRESERVESSCHOHARIE CREEK PRESERVEWith hundreds of volunteer hours and a lot of hard work, the Schoharie Creek Preserve was ofcially opened in 2013. We acquired the 198 acre preserve as a gift from Dr. Clifford Tepper and Dr. Lester Citrin who enjoyed the property as a family recreational retreat. It took a dedi-cated effort, led by our own stewardship coordinator extraordinaire, board member Pete Bakal, and many volunteers including an enthusiastic crew from GE led by Andy Caruso. The preserve now has a new parking area, kiosk, and trail system, allowing visitors to enjoy a beauti-ful stretch of the Schoharie Creek.

Blue skies and fall colors along the shore of the pond at Restifo Preserve.

A Green Heron perches above the pond at the Restifo Preserve. Herons are a common visitor to this wetland environment and are more likely to be seen stalking the shorelines than perching in the trees.

A coot makes an appearance at the Restifo Preserve, one of many unusual birds that visits Restifo.
