Jacquie Joseph has instilled core values in the Michigan State softball program, devel-oping student-athletes that are successful on the fi eld, in the classroom and in the commu-nity. Under Joseph’s leadership, these values allow her players

to not only become successful during their college career, but in their future endeavors as well. As the records indicate, Joseph’s impact as a mentor and coach has been felt for years in the program she has built into one of the best in the Big Ten Conference. Since taking over the Spartan program in 1994, the 20th-year head coach has become the winningest coach in program history, guiding MSU to a 552-529-1 record and four NCAA Regional appearances. In addition, she is one of just three active coaches in the Big Ten to own more than 600 career victories, a milestone she accomplished during the 2008 season. Joseph will likely reach the 700-win pla-teau this season, as she currently owns 688 career victo-ries. When Joseph was named the fi fth head coach in school history, she immediately raised the expectations for the program. MSU has steadily improved under her tute-lage, posting three 40-win campaigns and nine 30-win sea-sons, including four in the past seven years. Joseph’s players have performed at a high level her entire career, leading to individual accolades as well as team success. She has coached six All-Americans and her players have earned All-Big Ten honors 44 times and All-Great Lakes Region honors 30 times. In the classroom, an impressive seven student-athletes have been named Academic All-America in her tenure, the most of any active coach in the Michigan State Athletics Department. Her play-ers are a regular on the Academic All-Big Ten Team, earning conference honors 100 times. The Spartans claimed the program’s fi rst-ever Big Ten Tournament title in 2004 with a tournament sweep of host Michigan, Northwestern and Illinois. In addition to the league tournament title, the three wins garnered State its second straight appearance in an NCAA Regional, which marked the fi rst time in MSU history the softball team made consecutive appearances in NCAA postseason play. State’s 2004 Big Ten Tournament sweep - which came in the midst of a 10-5 run to end the season - was largely due to the re-siliency of two-time All-America pitcher Jessica Beech, now pitching coach for the Spartans. Beech was the pitcher of record in 13 of the last 15 games of the season. However, the Spartan bats held their own in the fi nal 15 games, bat-ting .305 with 79 runs scored, 25 doubles and eight home runs during that span. Following the Big Ten Tournament win, MSU went on to defeat Texas A&M, 5-1, before fall-ing to No. 7 Washington, 12-8, in the fi rst two games of the NCAA Regional. State bounced back from its loss to UW with a 13-5 six-inning victory against Massachusetts, but was eliminated from the regional in a 9-1 loss to host Georgia. As a team, the Spartans raked in postseason honors, while leading the Big Ten in batting for the second consecu-tive year. Four players were named to All-Big Ten teams, as Jessica Beech and Angel Merren earned fi rst-team honors and Natalie Furrow and Dayna Feenstra were honorable

mention selections. Beech earned her second selection as an NFCA All-America honoree, while Furrow and Feenstra were also NFCA All-Region First-Team selections. Brittney Green earned Big Ten Tournament MVP accolades, while Beech, Furrow and Merren were also named to the All-Tour-nament Team. Green and Elizabeth Peterson were selected to the NCAA Region 8 Team, and Furrow closed out her career as MSU’s ninth-ever CoSIDA Academic All-America honoree. MSU posted 40 wins for the fourth time in school his-tory during the 2003 campaign. In addition, State made its third NCAA Regional run in the previous seven seasons, advanced to the regional fi nal, and picked up its fi rst season sweep of Michigan since the 1981 campaign. The Spartans took third in the Big Ten with a 13-6 mark, improving from a ninth-place fi nish and 4-16 record in 2002. The team’s ac-complishments did not go unnoticed, as Joseph earned Big Ten Coach of the Year honors, and she and her staff were hon-ored as the Great Lakes Regional Coaching Staff of the Year. From 1998-2000, Michigan State posted an overall record of 105-66, winning at least 30 games all three sea-sons. During the 1999 campaign, the Spartans compiled a 41-23 overall record and made their second NCAA Regional appearance in three years. The Spartans advanced to the regional fi nals before losing to DePaul to end the postsea-son run. The 1998 season marked the fi rst time in program history that the Spartans won 30 games in three consecu-tive years. In the three-year span, MSU had two NFCA All-Americans, two All-Great Lakes Region and six All-Big Ten honorees, and three players named to the Big Ten All-Tournament Team. Off the fi eld, the accolades were just as impressive, as players earned Academic All-America hon-ors three times and Academic All-Big Ten honors 15 times. Rebuilding the MSU program would have been a daunting task for most, but Joseph accepted the challenge and quickly reversed its fortunes. She gradually brought MSU back to respectability during her fi rst three seasons, and the result was a record-setting campaign in 1997. The Spartans won a school-record 47 games in 1997 and made their fi rst-ever Big Ten Tournament appearance after fi nish-ing third in the Big Ten regular season standings with a 14-9 record. The reward for turning around a program that had gone 258-409-4 in the 14 years prior to her arrival came on May 11, 1997, when the Spartans received the school’s fi rst-ever bid to the NCAA Softball Tournament.

In her fi rst season at the helm of the Spartan program in 1994, the energetic and enthusiastic Joseph guided MSU to its most overall wins (19) since the 1989 season. In addi-tion, two of her players earned All-Great Lakes Region hon-ors and three players earned CoSIDA Academic All-District recognition. Joseph’s coaching talents were recognized on a national level as well. In June of 1997, she served as co-coach of the West Team at the U.S. Softball Women’s National Team Festival in Midland, Mich. Joseph went on to serve as an assistant coach for the U.S. team that won the gold medal at the Pan Am Qualifi er in Medellin, Colombia, July 18-26, 1997. Joseph has helped mold several talented players in her MSU career. In 1996, Patti Raduenz, currently the head softball coach at Elon University, and Keri Lemasters, currently the head coach at Suffolk University in Boston, each earned NFCA Second-Team All-America honors, the fi rst Spartan players to earn All-America status since 1984. In addition, pitcher Stacey Smith landed a spot on the All-Great Lakes Region Second Team. Raduenz was also laud-ed for her classroom ability, earning fi rst-team Academic All-America recognition. After completing her fi nal season of eligibility in 1997, Lemasters went on to play for the USA National Team and professionally for the Durham Dragons. Raduenz played four years in the Women’s Professional Softball League, while Smith played one season in the pro leagues. In December of 1999, Stacey Phillips was drafted by the Tampa Bay FireStix of the WPSL. In 1998, Phillips earned third-team All-America honors, becoming the third player under Joseph to garner All-America recognition. Phil-lips was also the head softball coach at Indiana University from 2006-2008.

JESSICA BOGRAKOSASSISTANT COACHSIXTH SEASON

A former Spartan softball standout, Jessica (Beech) Bograkos returns for a sixth year as an assistant coach, having served as a volunteer assistant in 2007. Along with assisting in day-to-day duties, Bograkos will primarily work as MSU’s pitching

coach. Since her return to MSU, Spartan pitchers have continuously improved each year. Overall under Bograkos’ tutelage, three different Spartans have thrown a no-hitter as well as Megan Hair throwing the school’s fi rst perfect game as an individual in MSU’s 8-0 win over St. Joseph’s on March 6, 2007. In 2010, Lauren Kramer made history as she became the fi rst Spartan to throw a no-hitter since 2007 when Michigan State downed Stetson, 8-0. Kramer threw the school’s 21st no-hitter, becoming the 14th different player to record such a feat. Kramer ended the year ranked 80th nationally in shutouts (fi ve) and 96th in strikeouts (177) and ranks ninth in school history with 302 career strikeouts. A two-time NFCA All-America honoree, Bograkos holds the MSU record for career no-hitters (4), wins (72), shutouts (24) and strikeouts (659). In addition, she holds single-season records for wins (29), innings pitched (283.1), appearances (53), shutouts (13) and the top two spots on the single-season strikeout chart (264, 235). Secchia Softball StadiumSPARTAN RECORD BOOK

In recognition of a $1 million gift from alumnus Ambassador Peter F. Secchia, the Michigan State University Board of Trustees voted unanimously Sept. 17, 2010 to approve the naming of the new softball facility Secchia Stadium.

The largest cash (outright) gift received by an MSU women’s intercollegiate sports program has gone toward the construction of a new 1,100-seat facility located at Old College Field, which was completed for the 2011 season.

Secchia Stadium also features 120 chair-back seats, a new press box and sound system, and accessible seating, while brick accents on the outside of the stadium architecturally match historic Jenison Field House, McLane Base-ball Stadium, and the hitting and pitching facility. The total cost of construction was $2 million.

“This is a truly meaningful gift from Peter and Joan Secchia, for it signifi es the worthiness of all of our intercollegiate programs at MSU,” said MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon. “We are so grateful for Peter’s and his family’s contin-ued, outstanding leadership in support of the university.”

Chairman Emeritus of Universal Forest Products, Secchia is also a member of the Athletic Director’s Advisory Coun-cil. His volunteerism and contributions to Michigan State date back nearly 50 years.

Secchia recently provided the lead gift for the College of Human Medicine’s new headquarters in Grand Rapids, now known as the Secchia Center. Secchia also co-chaired the fundraising effort to construct the Smith Academic Center at MSU, the academic resource center utilized by MSU’s student-athletes.

“It is gifts like this that will help elevate our total program,” said MSU Director of Athletics Mark Hollis. “We are so ap-preciative of Peter and Joan helping add another jewel to the wonderful Old College Field complex. Peter has meant so much to the university and to the advancement of our intercollegiate athletics program.” “This tremendous contribution is another great example of alumni giving back to the community that nurtured them,” said MSU head coach Jacquie Joseph.

“This signifi es one family’s commitment to the entire Spartan athletic family. We are so grateful to the Secchia family for putting their trust in our program and supporting the vision of the women’s softball program. It is truly a dream come true for all past Spartan softball alumnae, current players and for all those players who will follow in the future. As one member of a family prospers, so does the entire family. Our program will work hard to honor this gift and represent all Spartans with pride.”

ABOUT PETER & JOAN SECCHIAA Marine Corp. veteran (1956-59), Ambassador Peter Secchia graduated from Michigan State 1963 with a degree in economics. Joan Secchia graduated with a degree in elementary education from MSU. The Secchia’s married on June 20, 1964.

Following his graduation, Secchia served as the US Ambassador to Italy from 1989 to 1993. He received the Cavaliere di Gran Croce (The Knight of the Great Cross). He also was awarded the Department of State Distinguished Honor Award during his service, an award given to serving ambassadors and to non-career ambassadors.

Secchia has served as the CEO and Chairman of the Board of Universal Forest Products, a company that manufactures engineered wood components and operates manufacturing plants and distribution centers throughout North America. A former Spartan pitcher and eventual head coach, Gloria Becksford still ranks as one of the most consistent and successful performers in Michigan State softball history. A solid performer, both in the circle and at the plate, Becksford played a pivotal role in building the tradition and history that Spartan softball is today.

On Sept. 29, 1995, former Spartan pitcher Gloria Becksford became the fi rst female athlete at Michigan State University to have her uniform number retired.

Becksford’s uniform – No. 9 – was offi cially retired as part of the 20th anniversary reunion of the 1976 National Championship team. After graduating from Hamilton High, the Holland, Mich., native attended Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa. Two years later, Becksford transferred to MSU, where she helped lead the Spartans to the height of softball glory.

In 1975, her fi rst season at MSU, Becksford won 17 games and led the Spartans to a third-place fi nish in the College World Series. Becksford would become the greatest pitcher in MSU history after leading the Spartans to the AIAW National Championship in 1976. She appeared in 24 of MSU’s 28 games in ’76, throwing 137.1 of the team’s 192 innings. She went 17-1 with an ERA of 0.56. Of the 59 hits she allowed, just eight were for extra bases. Becksford faced 513 batters, striking out 110 and allowing just 14 walks. She was just as tough at the plate, hitting .370 with 20 hits and 14 RBIs. During her career, she tossed three no-hitters, which stood as the most in program history until Jessica Beech topped the feat with four career no-hitters (2001-04).

Becksford continued her Spartan career as head coach of the softball team from 1980-1993. During her 14-year career, Becksford tallied 259 victories, including 75 in Big Ten play. She led the 1980 squad to a second-place fi nish in the SMAIAW (State of Michigan Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women) postseason tournament, and directed the 1981 Spartans to a seventh-place fi nish in the AIAW (Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women) tournament, second-place in the SMAIAW and fi rst place in the MAIAW (Midwest Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women).

Diane Spoelstra became a rare three-sport athlete at Michigan State, earning starting positions in volleyball, women’s basketball and softball from 1975-78. According to athletic communications’ records, Spoelstra is one of only two women to compete in three different sports at MSU, joining Shirley Cook (1955-58: fi eld hockey, basketball and track).

She was a three-year starter in softball from 1976-78 for Coach Dianne Ulibarri and helped Michigan State to a combined record of 68-32, including three-straight 20-win seasons. As a sophomore, Spoelstra started at third base for MSU’s 1976 AIAW National Champions (24-4 overall record) and batted .467 (7-for-15) in the College World Series. In a 6-4 win over Kansas in Game 2 of the College World Series, Spoelstra went 4-for-4, including a triple, and scored a run. For the season, she led the team in home runs (3) and walks (16) and fi nishing third in both runs scored (20) and RBI (15).

In 1977, the Spartans (23-11) again advanced to the AIAW College World Series and fi nished third. MSU went 21-17 in 1978, winning the (unoffi cial) Big Ten Tournament Championship.

The 5-foot-10 Spoelstra was a two-year starter in basketball from 1976-78 for Coach Karen Langeland, who helped Michigan State to a combined record of 44-13 including back-to-back 20-win seasons. As a junior, she averaged 11.7 points, 6.1 rebounds and 1.4 assists while connecting on 47 percent of her shots from the fl oor, as the Spartans won the Midwest Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (MAIAW) Championship and qualifi ed for the AIAW Tournament. Spoelstra scored a career-high 28 points against Ohio State in the 1977 Big Ten Tournament.

A two-year starter in volleyball for Coach Annelies Knoppers, Spoelstra helped the Spartans to a combined record of 82-13, including back-to-back (unoffi cial) Big Ten Tournament Championships and consecutive appearances in the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women Championships.

“I’m overwhelmed by the selection (into the MSU Athletics Hall of Fame),” Spoelstra said, who was a member of the 2012 MSU Athletics Hall of Fame Class. “I was pleasantly surprised to receive the news, but it’s wonderful to be part of MSU’s sports legacy.

“Looking back, it certainly took a lot of discipline to compete in three sports. I was a natural athlete, but it took discipline to manage my time and effort. I certainly invested a lot of time practicing. I’m often asked what sport I enjoyed most, and honestly, basketball was my fi rst love.

“I’m honored when someone describes me as a `pioneer’ for women’s sports. I competed at Michigan State during the beginning stages of Title IX, so it took a passion for sports for overcome a lot of the obstacles.”

Spoelstra began her playing career at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mich., before transferring to Michigan State.
