WithoneyearundertheLadyDemonsintotheGeorgeVanLinderera,NorthwesternStatehopestotaketheexperi-encesithadandprogressthemforthefuture. “Thisyear,Ithinktheteamhasmoreconfidenceinitself,asplayersandasateam.Lastseasonwasalearningprocessforusonhowweliketodothingsasastaff,andhowtheyreactasplayers,”saidVanLinder.“Weallknowhowweneedtoper-formandtheexpectationswehave.“Ithinkhavingseveralseniorswillhelpalot,”hesaid.“Hope-fullywecanuseourlargenumberofseniorsandexperiencetogiveusanadvantageinconference,andatthesametimeIthinktheseniorsareveryhungrytogooutonahighnote.” TheLadyDemonsreturnsevenseniorsandsixjuniorsin2013includingthree-yearstartersAshleeSavona,YanciJohnson,DanielleHardingandShannonDanku. “YanciistheoneplayerontheteamthathasfollowedNorthwesternStatesoccersinceshewasayouthplayerlivinginthearea,”saidVanLinder.“Ithinkitskindoftheperfectmovieendingifshecangooutonahighnote,andthat’swhatshewants and we want to help her as well. “Shannonwasaplayerlastyearthatwehadplayingoneposition(defense)andaswegotintotheseasonwerealizedShannonwouldbeabiggerweaponforusontheattack.Sureenough,justaswerealizedshecouldbesomethingdangerousuptop,shehadaseasonendinginjury,”hesaid.“We’rehopingshecanbuildonthat.Shecamebackstrongwithherrehab,andwe’rehopingforbigthingsfromher.” Lastseason,theLadyDemonsaveragedonly1.44goalspermatch,butonlyallowed1.94agame.In2013,NSU’sof-fenseisexpectedtobemoredangerous. “Ithinklastyearourattackingsideoftheballwastheareathatneededthemosthelp.Wewouldoutshootteams,butcouldn’tgetgoalstoland.Thisyear,Ithinkitcouldbethestrongestareaofourgame,”saidVanLinder. “Onthedefensiveside,wehavefewinjuriesthataregoingtomakeusseewhatwecanputtogether,”hesaid.“Wehavesomegoodpeoplebackthere.Wefeelliketheywilllearnsomethings,butrightnowthatdefensethebiggestquestionmark.” NorthwesternStatereturnstwogoalkeeperswithathree-yearscombinedexperiencethatwillmakeforaninteresting

ThatwillbefollowedbyfivestraightroadgamesthatincludeBaylor,OleMiss,staterivalLouisiana-Lafayette,JacksonState,andLouisiana-Monroe. “Ournonconferenceisagoodlearningopportunityforus,”saidVanLinder.“We’regoingtobetestedwithaBig12andSoutheasternConferenceteamonourschedule,alongwithstaterivals. “Itwillreallyhelpusprepareforconference,andthat’sreallymostimpor-tant,”hesaid.“Wewanttodowellinnonconferenceplay,butweknowthatthosepeoplewillonlymakeusstronger.” TheLadyDemonswillopenupSouthlandConferenceplaywithLamaronSept.20,afterhostingPrairieViewA&Minthefinalnonconferencetest. “Allcoaches,whenaskedabouttheirconferenceseason,sayit’sgoingtobetoughforanybodytowinit.Thisyearwithsomeadditionalteamsitwillbeinterestingtoseewhatthebalanceis,”saidVanLinder.“SFAshouldbethefavoritegoingin,butthey’velostalotofpeople.Lamar,whowastherunner-up,haseveryonereturning,soIthinkthosetwowillbeatthetop. “Afterthat,itreallycouldbeanybody’stowin,”hesaid.“OralRobertshasagoodteam,HoustonBaptisttoo,andwe’regoingtoworktojumpinthere.”

Van Linder two seasons pri-or toNSU as the associate headcoachatOklahoma,and in2010the Sooners posted double-digit
wins for the first timesince2005andfinishedthird in theBig12regularseasonstandingswhilemakingtheprogram’sfirstap-pearanceintheBig12Championshipgame.Theseasonfeatured37 goals (tied for program record) and culminated with OUclinchingaspotintheNCAATournamentforthesecondtimeinprogramhistory(2003). PriortohisarrivalinNorman,VanLinderspenttheprevioustwoyearsastheheadcoachatStephenF.Austin.Hehelpedbuildthe team that took the2012SouthlandConferencechampion-ship. Enrollmenthas reachedrecord levelsduringWebb’s tenureaspresi-dentandexceeded10,500forthefirsttimeinhistoryinthefallof2004.Webbhasalsobeenattheforefrontinrecentyearsofmovingtheuniversitytowardhigheradmissionstandards,whichhasresultedinsomeenrollmentdeclinesbutintheenrollmentofstudentswithgreateracademicpotential
andaptitude. Retentionhas increased at theuniversity, the averageACT scoreof students has goneup, andhighschool student leaders are enrolling inNorthwestern in record numbers. There has been a substantialincrease in thenumberof high school valedictorians and salutatorians among first-time freshmen at theuniversity. ExternalfundingforNSUhasalsoincreaseddramaticallyunderWebb’sleadership.Inthefirstcapitalcampaigninitshistory,theuniversityreceived$32.7milliontofarexceeditsgoalof$18.84million.Thatfundingincludedtheestablishmentofnumerousendowedchairsandprofessorshipstoenhanceacademicprogramsattheuniversity.Inadditiontotheprivatefunding,Northwesternhasreceivedmoregrantmoniesinrecentyearsfromstateandfederalagenciesandprivatefoundationsthanatanytimesinceitsfoundingin1884. Webbhasalsoexpandedtheuniversity’soutreachbyspearheadingthedevelopmentatNSUofthelargestelectroniceducationanddistancelearningnet-workofanyuniversityinLouisiana.NSUofferscoursesanddegreeprogramstostudentsacrossthenationandworldthroughInternetandcompressedvideo. MillionsofdollarshavebeenobtainedduringWebb’spresidencyfornewandrenovatedfacilities.Anew$6.9millionWellness,RecreationandActivityCenteropenedonthecampusin2005;andMorrisonHall,theFamilyandConsumerSciencesBuilding,andWilliamsonHallhavebeencompletelyrenovatedandrestored.AnewStudentServicesCenteronthesiteoftheformerWestCaspariHallwascompletedinMay2012.Over$32millioninconstructionbyaprivatecompanyhasaddedtwomodifiedresidencehallstothecampusinrecentyears.FundinghasalsobeenobtainedtorebuildtheEastCaspariHallandreplacetheundergroundelectricaldistributionsystem. Northwesternacademicprogramsandathleticteamscontinuetoreceivepositivenationalrecognition.TheComputerInformationSystemsprogram,forexample,wonfiveconsecutivenationalchampionshipsinacademiccompetitioninsystemsanalysis,andtheNSUmen’sbasketballteamdefeatedIowaintheNCAAnationalchampionshiptournament. AformercenterontheNorthwesternfootballteam,Webbisanavidsupporteroftheuniversity’sathleticprogramsandhasheldpositionsofleadershipatthenationallevelinintercollegiateathletics.HehasservedaschairoftheboardofdirectorsoftheSouthlandConferenceandhasbeenamemberofthepresti-giousNCAAExecutiveCouncilandtheNCAADivisionIBoardofDirectorsthatoverseeallmajorpolicydecisionsbythegoverningbodyformajorcollegesports.Hecurrentlyserves as the SouthlandConference representativeon theNCAAPresidentialAdvisoryGroup. A 1965 graduate of Northwestern in mathematics and business education,WebbearnedamasterofsciencedegreeinmathematicsfromNSUin1966.Hereceivedadoc-torateineducationfromtheUniversityofSouthernMississippiin1971withaconcentra-tioninmathematicsandresearch. WebbwasamemberofthefacultyofLongwoodCollegeinFarmville,Va,from1966until1974.HeservedasDirectorofHigherEducationandTeacherCertificationintheLouisianaDepartmentofEducationfrom1974through1976.HemovedtoSoutheasternLouisianaUniversity in1976andin13yearsthereheldpositionsasdirectorof institu-tionalresearch,EEOofficer,registrarandmemberofthemathematicsfaculty. HebecameDeanofInstructionandGraduateStudiesandprofessorofmathematicsatNorthwestern in1989. In thatposition,hewasresponsible forcampus-widepolicydevelopment, planning, advancement, and review of both graduate and undergraduateprograms.WhileWebbwasinthatposition,graduateenrollmentincreasedby35percent,andinternalfundingforfacultyresearchincreasedby200percent. Asdean,WebbproposedtheconceptforNSU’ssuccessfulFreshmanConnectionPro-gramandservedasamemberofthewritingteamforagrantproposalthatresultedinafiveyear,$1.7millionTitleIIIgranttoimprovestudentretention.Healsochairedthesteering committee forNSU’s Self Study for the SouthernAssociationofColleges andSchools. collegiateathletics.PierceworkscloselywithathleticdirectorGregBurkeandallNSUcoachesandstaffmemberstokeepNorthwesternathleticscompetingatachampionshiplevelweekafterweek,month after month and year after year. A 1961 graduate of Northwestern, Pierce served as trainer/managerfortheDemonfootballteamduringhiscollegeyears,work-ingcloselywithlegendarycoachJackClayton.Afterearninghisjour-nalismdegree,PiercewenttoworkfortheNewOrleansTimesPica-yune,servingasareporterandeditor.Hewasnamedexecutivesportseditor at the age of 24. In1965,hechosetoraisehistwosonsinNatchitochesandre-turnedtoNSUassports informationdirector.Hewaspromotedtonewsbureaudirectortwoyearslaterandassumedadditionalresponsi-bilitiesinathletics,alumniaffairsandotherareasthroughtheyears. Hefounded,in1972,theLouisianaSportsHallofFamefacilityinPratherColiseumontheNSUcampus,providingahomeforanentitycreatedin1958.Heestablishedannualinductionactivitiesthatremaininplacenearlyfourdecadeslater,andservedasdirectoroftheHallfor19yearsuntilhispromotiontovicepresidentin1990forcedhimtostepasidefromthevolunteerpost. Hehelped guideNorthwestern into three athletic conferences(TransAmerica,1979;GulfStar,1983;Southland,1987)andNCAADivisionIstatusin1977.HeisapastpresidentoftheSouthlandandhasservedtheconferencethroughotherofficesandcommitteeposi-tions. In 1994, hewas named one of Louisiana’s 20most influentialsportsfiguresbytheTimes-Picayune.AlsoonthelistwereNewOr-
leansSaintsownerTomBenson,LSUathleticdirectorJoeDeanandbasketballcoachDaleBrown,andGramblingfootballcoachinglegendEddieRobinson. Hissalesmanshipandmanagerialskillswereinstrumental inconvincingTri-StarProductionstofilmthe1989smashhitmovieSteelMagnolias,withanall-starcastincludingJuliaRoberts,SallyFieldandDylanMcDermottinNatchitochesandontheNSUcampus.Themovie’simpactontour-isminNatchitochescontinuestoresonatemorethantwodecadeslater. PierceisregardedasoneofthemosteffectivelegislativeliaisonsforLouisiana’shighereduca-tionsystem.Heisalsoapopularafterdinnerspeakerandmasterofceremonieswhohasspokenathundredsofeventssince1965. NSUin2004-05becamethefirst(andremainstheonly)SouthlandConferencememberintheleague’sfivedecadesofhistorytosweepfootball,men’sbasketballandbaseballchampionshipsinthesameathleticyear.It’sbeendoneonlyonceinSoutheasternConferencehistory,byAlabamain1933-34,andonlyfourtimesinBigTenConferencehistory,thelasttimebyMichiganStatein1979-80. TheacademicaccomplishmentsarereflectedannuallyintheNCAA’sAPRandGSRstudies.CommunityservicebyNSUstudent-athletes,coachesandstaffmorethandoubledtoover5,000hoursin2009-10andhasremainedatthatlevel. Since2006,NorthwesternStateUniversityhasmadenumerousparadigmshiftsinhowitaddressestheneedsofstudent-athletes;however,onethinghasbeenconsistentinthatitsstudent-athletesarewinnersonthefieldandintheclassroom.AllhaveheardabouthighereducationalinstitutionsbeingpenalizedbytheNCAAforacademicimproprieties.NSUhasattemptedtobeamodelprogramof“DoingThings theRightWay,”by following theAth-leticDepartmentmotto:GreatTradition–BrighterFuture.Thispastyear,NSUwasoneofonlyfourschoolsintheStateofLouisianathatdidnotreceiveanypenaltiesforlowNCAAAcademicProgressRates (APR)withbaseball, soccer, softball, tennis,women’s indoor&outdoortrack,andvolleyballratinginthetopthreeintheSouthlandConference.Amongthe40NorthwesternStatestudent-athletesandathleticstaffmemberswhograduatedinspring2010,10ofthe20receivingundergraduatedegreesgraduatedeithercumlaudeormagnacumlaude.Graduationratesofstudent-athletesinsoccer,volleyball,men’sbasketball,base-ballandfootballrankedinthetopfouroftheConference.Theseaccomplishmentscouldnothavebeenachievedwithoutthesupportandeffortsofthestudent-athletes,coaches,faculty,and administration. ShewasamagnacumlaudegraduateofNSUinAugust2007inbusinessadministration,andalsowasakeycontributorontheLadyDemons’2005NCAATournamentteamthatwontheSouthlandConferenceTournament. Crowellistheacademiccoordinatorforthesportsofsoccer,women’sbasketball,men’sandwomen’strack,volleyball,andveteranfootball.ShealsoheadstheEnhancedAcademicProgramwhichprovidesadditionalhelpforstudent-athletesandaidsinmaintainingahealthyandsuccessfulbalancebetweenacademicsandathletics. Crowellservedaninternshipinthesummerof2008withtheMissouriSportsHallofFame,helpingstageeventssupportingaNationwideTourgolftournamentco-sponsoredby
theHall.ShealsoassistedindailyoperationsofthemuseuminSpringfield,Mo.,andhelpedstagetheMissouriHighSchoolBasketballAll-StarsGame. CrowellwasamemberofAlphaLambdaDeltahonorssocietyfrom2005-2007,graduat-inginthreeyearswitha3.74gradepointaverage.ShemadetheSLCCommissioners’Aca-demicHonorRollinthelastthreeseasonsshecompetedforNSU,cappedbya2006seasoninwhichherdefensehelpedtheLadyDemonssetaschoolrecordforleastgoalsallowedpergame. CrowellgraduatedwithherMastersofScienceinSportAdministrationwitha4.0GPA in May 2009.
Dustin Eubanks isinhis13thyearintheNSUathleticdepartmentandhis12thyearatthehelmofthecomplianceduties,keepingallathleticpersonnelcurrentandinaccordancewithNCAAandSouthlandConfer-
enceguidelines. A1996educationgraduateofNorthwestern,the38-year-oldavidfanofallteamsthathailfromPittsburghseizedanopportunitytoserveasagraduateassistantinthesportsin-formationdepartmentatNorthwesternwhilebeginningthepursuitofhismaster’sdegreeinhealthandphysicaleducation(concentrationinsportsadministration),whichheobtainedinMayof2003,andwasimpressiveenoughtoearnapromotiontofull-timestatusinNovember1998. Eubanks ismarried to the formerDawnHornsbyofBranch and the couple has twodaughters,EmilieandTaylorNicole.Thesisterssharethesamebirthdate. DustinandDawn,whoistheAssociateDirectorofFinancialAidatNSU,willcelebratedtheirtenthweddinganniversarythissummer.

JohnsonandseveralbaseballcoachesforeightseasonsbeforegraduatingwithaB.S.inac-countinginMay1995. Freemanthenbecamethecompliancecoordinatorandacademicadvisorduringathree-year span before leaving in 1998. ShereturnedtoNSUintheFallof2000inhercurrentpositionasBusinessManagerwhereshenowservesasliaisonbetweentheathleticdepartmentandbusinessaffairs.Shehasoneson,AaronPizani,whoisalsoaNSUalum.
Ray FriaswasnamedassistantdirectorofspecialfacilitiesinDecem-ber 2012. FriaswasamemberoftheDemonbaseballteamfrom2011-2012and
finished with 74 games played and 62 of those were starts as a middle infielder. Hefinishedhiscareerwith52hits,sixdoubles,atriple,ahomerun,and36runs.Hisbestassesttotheteamwashisdefenseleadingtheteaminassistsanda.953fieldingpercent-age his senior season. AnativeofBronx,NYandagraduateofAllHallowsHighSchool,Friaswasthesecondinschoolhistorytohavehisjerseyretiredafterbeingastandoutbaseballplayer. Heobtainedhis bachelor’sdegree inhealth andexercise science fromNorthwesternState in May 2012. JonsonpreviouslyspentjustovertwoyearsasAssistantMarketingDirectorforTicketOperationsatNSUbeforeservingthepasttwoyearsasAssistantAthleticDirectorforTicket-ingandOperationsattheUniversityofLouisianaatMonroe.HealsoworkedastheAssistantDirectorofAthleticsMediaRelationsattheUniversityofNorthFloridaforoneyear. AtULM,Jonsonprovidedoversightfortheathleticcommunicationsandticketingof-ficeswhileassistinginmarketingandfundraisingactivities.Hehelpedestablishnewatten-dancerecordsforseveralsports,includingaseason-longbaseballtallythatrankedinthetop40nationallyin2012andasingle-gamecrowdofmorethan31,000foranationallytelevisedfootball game againstBaylor. FowlerhasworkedastheprimarymediacontactfortheLadyDemonsoccerprogram,women’sbasketballprogramandtheDemonbaseballprogram.HeassistedwithproductionofNSU’saward-winningfootball,baseballandmen’sbasketballmediaguides,aswellasgameprogramsforseveralsportsandotherpromotionalmaterials.HetookthirdplaceintheLoui-sianaSportsWritersAssociationDivisionIImediaguidecontestforhis2012-13women’sbas-ketballmediaguide. Hehasbeentheofficialscorerandstatisticianforfootball,men’sandwomen’sbasketball,baseballandsoccer. In2010,FowlerbecamethefourthNSUstudentassistanttoreceivetheprestigiousAceHigginsAwardthatispresentedannuallybytheLouisianaSportsWritersAssociationtotheoutstandingstudentassistantSIDinthestate. Fowler,aHomernative,graduatedfromNSUin2011withabachelor’sdegreeingeneralstudieswithaconcentrationinartsandcommunication.Healsominoredinsportsmanage-ment. Priortojoiningthesportsinformationstaffasastudentworker,FowlerwasamemberoftheSpiritofNorthwesternmarchingbandasatrumpetplayer. FowlerwasalsoveryactiveincampusactivitiesincludingservingasPresidentoftheBap-tistChristianMinistryandparticipatinginintramuralathletics. AtHomerHighSchool,FowlerwasClaiborneParishstudentoftheyearinhissenioryearandvaledictorianofhisgraduatingclass.
