2013 Annual Report

Dear Friends,

On behalf of NWSRA and SLSF, thank you for your ongoing commitment to providing outstanding opportunities for children and adults with disabilities. We are excited to present to you the 2013 Northwest Special Recreation Association (NWSRA) and Special Leisure Services Foundation (SLSF) Annual Report.

Thousands of memorable experiences were created through trips, special events, camps, clubs, sports and so many other recreational pursuits. Thank you for volunteering, making a fi nancial donation or being a part of the lives of our participants. As the need for quality recreational programming continues, so does our commitment to those individuals who wish to make friends, have fun, be included, go new places, learn new things and celebrate their lives. By supporting SLSF, you have helped a child with autism learn how to swim, a teenager with Down syndrome meet his fi rst girlfriend, or an adult with a physical disability take a vacation of a lifetime. Your involvement has impacted someone’s life in a positive and unique way.

In 2013, the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) awarded NWSRA the 2013 Excellence in Inclusion Award, for its commitment to promoting inclusion and diversity, and utilizing best practices to accommodate the needs of residents. Increased day camp options included the Weekly Recreators camp, providing parents with the opportunity to register one week at a time. NWSRA proudly achieved Park District Risk Management Association (PDRMA) Accreditation for excellence in risk management practices, and eight full time staff earned Certifi ed Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) and/or Certifi ed Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) status.

In addition, the efforts of SLSF opened the doors of opportunity, surpassing its fundraising goals in excess of $150,000, and providing over $90,000 in scholarship funding. An Impact Auction at the Celebrate Ability…an evening with friends event raised the necessary funds to purchase tables and chairs for PURSUIT, a new Adult Day Program that, in partnership with Clearbrook, will open its doors in 2014 at the Rolling Meadows Community Center.

We look forward to the continued friendships and new partnerships that will make an impact on the lives of NWSRA participants in 2014. As you see the smiling faces on the following pages, recognize that in some way, your giving spirit has brought joy to the lives of many.

Day Camp Over 550 campers laughed, played and reveled in 43 camps, after care and overnights throughout the northwest suburbs. One of the highlights occurred when 175 Session I campers and staff took a fi eld trip to Rainbow Falls for swimming, followed by the Elk Grove Rotary Fest, sponsored by the Elk Grove Rotary Club. NWSRA also collaborated with School District 15 and School District 54 to provide day camp in the afternoon, following their morning summer school program.

Weekly Recreators provided a weekly registration option, providing more fl exibility to families that are unable to commit to a full session of day camp. This year, 115 campers took advantage of this opportunity. Field trips throughout the day camps included climbing at Prairie Stone Health and Wellness Center, swimming at Wheeling Aquatic Center, visiting the animals at Lincoln Park Zoo, ice skating at West Meadows Ice Arena, jumping at the Jump Zone.

When parents were asked, “What benefi ts did your child receive from participating in camp?” Answers included: • Opportunity to participate in a group setting • To be outside and enjoy swimming • Being in a structured recreational setting • Being around other kids • Having fun with his peers • Socialization • Participating in activities/crafts that he may not have done otherwise • Problem solving skills, self-esteem, life and social skills

Lightning & Paralympic Sports

NWSRA Lightning athletes experienced much success and achievement in 2013. In March, thirteen athletes on the NWSRA Purple Basketball Team competed at the State Basketball Tournament in Bloomington/Normal, marking the fi rst time in over 10 years that this team has qualifi ed for the state competition. In September, both of the NWSRA Softball Teams qualifi ed and competed at the Outdoor Sports Festival held in Decatur, IL. Both teams returned home with silver medals.

In the spring, Teen Club and Friday Night Live Club enjoyed a Paralympics Experience at the Palatine Community Center. Twenty fi ve participates learned and experienced how to play boccia, power soccer, basketball, and riding a hand-cycle. This annual event was a huge success, enabling participants to learn about different opportunities in Paralympics. In May, 14 athletes competed in the Great Lakes Regional Games hosted by GLASA. Athletes competed in the archery and boccia competitions, and athlete BJ Dammeier fi nished in fi rst place against over twenty athletes.

Weekly ProgramsRecognizing the diverse needs of recreators, NWSRA offered a variety of new weekly program options throughout the year. New programs included a pottery program, Dandy Dancers, a Spirit Squad, Fitness Exploration, and After School Martial Arts at District 59. In addition, offerings for guitar and piano lessons were increased, Happy Hour expanded to 2 sites and 4 programs, and Staying Fit added a nutritional component to its program. Weekly programs continued to provide a wide variety of recreational options for over 4,600 recreators in 566 programs.

PAL program, a cooperative between NWSRA and Clearbrook, spent the fall learning about music. Participants studied and experienced various genres and discussed their thoughts. As part of this study they also prepared the Firebird Suite Ballet where they studied the composer, the music and other performances of the ballet, chose their roles and choreographed the performance. They fi nished the season by performing their interpretation of the ballet with the assistance of the Metropolis Performing Arts Centre.

InclusionOn October 9, 2013, NWSRA received the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) Excellence in Inclusion Award at a special reception in Houston, TX for its outstanding efforts toward providing inclusive services. Over the past fi ve years, NWSRA has created a signifi cant impact on its community by providing more than 9,000 inclusive recreational opportunities to individuals with disabilities of various ethnic backgrounds. Ensuring the highest standards of inclusion, NWSRA has implemented an individualized approach to each inclusion experience to meet recreational needs. Throughout the inclusion experience, staff members ensure that the participant’s needs are met through on-site visits, an assessment and conversations with family members, aides and park district staff.

Throughout the year, NWSRA provided 691 individuals with inclusive support in 2,046 programs. The benefi ts of these experiences included increased socialization, acceptance, interaction, diversity awareness, and more.

Leisure EducationPartnering with local school districts, NWSRA expanded the recreational interests of students throughout the northwest suburbs. Over 500 outings including wall climbing, outdoor cooking, fi shing and so much more highlighted a year of fun for more than 2,900 students.

On March 1, six students from Kirk School who use wheelchairs set out to experience Maple Syruping at Spring Valley Nature Center. Using a specialized drill to extract syrup from maple trees, the students learned all about the process of making maple syrup and performed a taste test at the end. Afterwards, they headed back to school to make home made pancakes!

On October 21, ten early childhood students from Greenbrier school headed to Heritage Farm for a true farm experience. The students received up close and personal experiences as they played with the chickens, met a mother cow and her baby calf, and spent time at the pig pen.

“The students love the NWSRA trips. Many of my students don’t get to participate in leisure recreation activities. Once their parents hear they can do bowling/wallyball/ice skating….they usually try to take their children to do similar activities. Many of the families aren’t aware of all the adaptations that public facilities can make.” - Teacher from Stevenson High School

VolunteersThrough a variety of innovative programs and activities, 376 volunteers lended their time and talents to NWSRA. In addition, corporate volunteerism remained strong, as volunteers from Assurance cleaned the NWSRA vans, Zurich continued its volunteerism and support at Family Fest and the Zurich Fun Fair, Mitsubishi provided volunteers at the Day Camp Olympics and so much more.

The positive impact of volunteerism was felt in summer Day Camps, as camps received over 960 hours of volunteer support, equaling a staff cost savings of over $9,600. Due to these savings, increased dollars were available to be used toward providing scholarships to individuals in need.

NWSRA also formed a relationship with the GAP store in Woodfi eld thanks to the support of volunteer Peter Oliveri. Peter began volunteering with NWSRA to fulfi ll a class requirement for a psychology class at Roosevelt University. After completing his fi eld placement, he began recruiting groups of volunteers to support NWSRA’s Northern and Southern Stars dances, increasing fundraising opportunities via service hour credit through GAP’s “Be What’s Possible” campaign.

Special Events and TripsTravelers, dancers, sports fans, and artists alike reveled in over 90 special events and 4 trips held throughout the year. For example, the Schaumburg Firefi ghters and Palatine Women’s Club chipped in their support of the 32nd Annual Family Festival in June, with hundreds of family members and volunteers in attendance. Arts in the Park Day, in collaboration with the Palatine Park District, was a free public event in July that featured several art stations and musical entertainment. In addition, spring break and winter break camps brought the fun to Rec Plex, Wheeling Recreation Center and Bartlett Community Center. Special events received over 1,500 registrations in 2013.

Thirty-one adventurous travelers headed to San Diego for NWSRA’s annual Long Trip in September. Vacationers caught some rays on the beach, meandered around the zoo and saw Shamu at Sea World. The group also took in a baseball game at Petco Park to cheer on the Padres.

In May, fourteen PI/VI participants headed to Las Vegas as they stayed at the New York-New York Hotel. They took in a play called Broadway Celebrations, visited the Bellagio Fountains, the M & M store, Madame Tussaud’s Interactive Wax Museum and enjoyed lots of Las Vegas pool time and cuisine.
