Walking trails are found at Lakeside Park and at Avondale Park. Avondale is a traditional asphalt walking track that attracts walkers who “take their laps” around the facility.

Logan Martin Lake is 17,000 acres of pure fun. Between two hydroelectric dams are 275 miles of shoreline for a lake that is more than 48 miles long. Logan Martin is a destination point for water enthusiasts and because of the aesthetics of its picturesque views.

Lakeside Park is located on 65 acres adjacent to the Pell City Civic Center. Picnic areas are available under the trees at no charge. Pavilions with individual restrooms are perfect for special occasions. Rustic trails wind through the acreage for walkers, runners and bikers. A boat launch, fishing piers and swimming area make the park a popular recreation spot in the region.

Downtown Historic District offers a walk down memory lane. Sidewalk markers tell of the historic buildings found there, many near the century mark. The downtown business district thrives today with specialty shops and professional offices.

Pell City Center for Education and the Performing Arts is a state of the art theater and sports arena all under one roof but separated by a grand lobby, ideal for receptions and gatherings. The theater seats more than 400 with acoustics unrivaled in the area, and local and national acts find their way to center stage each year. The sports arena seats 3,500 and is home to Pell City High School Panther basketball as well as a venue for large events and galas.

Pell City Civic Center offers year round sports and recreational activities, including basketball, a state-of-the-art exercise room and an indoor walking track. The Civic Center has varying sized rooms available for meetings, conferences and special events, and the gymnasium has a stage with floor space able to accom-modate seating for up to 500 for large events and performances.

Kids Kastle demonstrates what is good about a community that cares about its children. Kids Kastle was built wholly by the community for its children. More than 2,000 volunteers built this elaborate playground in a single weekend. The imagination inducing equipment — from a pirate’s ship to a swinging bridge — is a huge attraction for children and parents alike. And the financing was made possible through the generous donations of the business community and individuals.

Page 8: 2013 Pell City Brochure

Pell City has the distinction of being founded not once, but twice. It was incorporated in 1891 and named for New Yorker George Hamilton Pell, who was the lead investor in the railroad that led to creating a town in that location. The Panic of 1893 took its toll, and Pell City was all but lost as a town.

But a young Sumter Cogswell, who had the vision of what it could be, began the town anew by locating Pell City Manufacturing there, a plant that would later become Avondale Mills and around which a town rose. Some of the first homes were built in 1902, just north of the main street that now bears Cogswell’s name.

And today, Pell City, along with Ashville, serves as the county seat of St. Clair and is one of the fastest growing cities in the fastest growing county in Alabama.

History

ShoppingDecades ago, the

Chamber of Commerce launched a campaign called “Shop Pell City First.” It was meant to raise awareness about the benefits of keeping tax dollars at home and acquainting or reacquainting shoppers with what Pell City had to offer.

Today, shopping Pell City first is a wise move because it does have so much to make that shopping experience a good one. From antique treasures to one of a kind gifts to artwork to that perfect bottle of wine, Pell City does seem to have it all.

Retail districts are found all along its main thoroughfares of U.S. 231 North and South, U.S. 78 East and West, historic downtown and in out of the way places that dot the city’s landscape.

Big box stores, chains and hometown favorites abound in this shopping paradise, offering a little something for everyone, making it no small wonder that shoppers need look no farther than right here at home.

There is nothing like music, fun and fellowship on an early summer night in Pell City’s historic downtown or taking a stroll through Lakeside Park, browsing booth after booth of creative works by noted artists from around the corner and around the state at the Artscape Festival. You can take your child fishing at the Catfish Rodeo or bundle up and head downtown for the city’s Christmas Parade. They all are part of annual events that make this a special place for the entire family.

Hometown Block Party is an outdoor musical festival featuring bands and singing groups on stages strategically placed around the courthouse and city hall square. Held the first Friday evening in June, the fun kicks off at 5 p.m. and goes well into the night, offering an array of food, vendors, rides and games for the kids and music to suit any taste — country, bluegrass, Motown, rock ‘n roll, Gospel and so much more. There is no charge for admission.

The Christmas Parade that makes its way through downtown Pell City and beyond each year is a sight to behold. Floats, bands, convertibles, the antics of the Shriners and Jolly Old Saint Nick himself are part of the festivities as Pell City rings in the season in early December. Thousands of visitors line the streets each year to get a glimpse of the lights, the pageantry and the spirit of Christmas that abounds in what has become one of the region’s largest parades.

Fourth of July Fireworks in Pell City aren’t just any fireworks display. This spectacular show lights up the summer sky over Logan Martin Lake, attracting thousands of people by boat, by car and truck and on foot to see one of the best fireworks displays in the state. Sponsored by the city of Pell City, it is one of the most anticipated events of the year, drawing visitors from near and far to celebrate our country’s independence in an extra special way.

Drama Camp for Kids at the Pell City Center for Education and the Performing Arts is a 10-day cultural event for children, ages 5 to 14, in June each year. Taught by a drama professional, it immerses children in all aspects of theater — from playing a part to building a set. The camp is a three-hour session daily, and the grand finale is a class production for family, friends and the general public in our state-of-the-art theater.

Lakefest has become the southeast’s largest in-water boat show each May, held on the shores of Logan Martin Lake. Test drive the newest models of boats and watercrafts that line the docks of the Horizons lakeside community. But boats aren’t the only attraction. This free event features lake-related vendors, bands and other entertainment, plenty of food and a spectacular fireworks display. Proceeds from the event go to support worthy charitable causes in the region.

Purse and Passion Luncheon has become one of the premier events of Pell City — a luncheon of hundreds who come to support the YWCA of Central Alabama’s program to combat domestic violence. Plenty of prizes, a great meal and inspiring stories from victims whose lives have been changed for the better highlight this annual event in August.

Lights in the Park illuminate the Christmas season’s nighttime sky as businesses and organizations build holiday displays featured nightly from just after Thanksgiving all the way to the new year. Held at Lakeside Park, the displays line both sides of the road winding through the park — a perfect complement to the holiday season to get everyone who drives through the park into the spirit of the holidays.

Page 13: 2013 Pell City Brochure

Children’s Place Luncheon is 20 years old and just keeps getting bigger and better than the one before it. Proceeds go to support the St. Clair County child advocacy center, and the entertainment as well as the food are unrivaled in these parts. This April event each year represents the coming together of the public for the benefit of children who are victims of abuse.

Pell City is in the midst of building a reputation as a mini-medical mecca in this growing community.

St. Vincent’s St. Clair is a state-of-the-art hospital with adjoining Physicians Plaza that are changing the face of health care in the region with comprehensive care not found in most cities of its size.

Col. Robert L. Howard Veterans Home is becoming a model for the nation because of its design as a sprawling village with homes rather than in a traditional, institutional setting. It offers skilled nursing, assisted living and Alzheimer’s care.

Northside Medical Associates has doubled its size, featuring cutting edge technology, its own pharmacy, after hours care and doctors, nurse practitioners and specialists to meet the needs of its patients.

American Family Care is newest on the scene with urgent care facilities and staff to provide a walk-in medical clinic for treatment of non-life threatening illnesses and injuries.

In addition to major medical facilities, services found throughout the city in chiropractic care, dialysis, general, pediatric and orthodontic dentistry, physical therapy, pain management, eye care, home health and hospice all underscore Pell City’s readiness to serve the diverse medical needs of the community.
