Master Visual Artists VICurators’ StatementIt has been a joy to curate this exhibition. Over the past six months, we were welcomed into the studios and homes of ten of the finest artists in the region. They all were incred-ibly gracious, sharing their time with us and allowing Film-makers’ production services crew to film them in their space.

An artist’s studio is a highly personal and mystical space where ideas take form. Upon entering the visual and tactile environments in which they choose to work, we were struck by the profound force of their absolute need to create.

While there is a timelessness about the work, the show encompasses current work that is very much of the moment. There is a fearlessness that we found in Gary’s paintings that appear to pulse and in Marjorie’s translucent sculptures. There are no apologies for beauty in Risë’s lush accordion collages or in the seductive paint of Chuck’s canvases.

This group of artists naturally resonates with each other. Humor and storytelling are celebrated in Paul’s videos as well as David’s whimsical sketches brought to life by his collaborators at Red Star Ironworks. The shimmering wood surfaces in Tadao’s furniture and Connie’s exquisite pastel drawings exhibit how craftsmanship elevates an artist’s ges-ture to visual poetry. There is a quintessential Pittsburgh–ness and, simultaneously, a universal quality of Mark’s photographs and Tina’s quilts and collages.

Their passion, sincerity, and enduring work ethic embody the necessity of art in our lives.

We are honored to present this impressive group of artists.

MVAHistoryMaster Visual Artists: Preserving the Legacy Exhibition began with a 1991 exhibit, 70+ and Still Working, which featured the works of ten artists over 70 years old, at the Fine Perlow Weis Gallery of the Jewish Community Center (JCC) in Pitts-burgh. The project was initially conceived by Pittsburgh artist Donna Hollen Bolmgren, chaired by Ellie Turk Barmen of the JCC Visual Arts Committee, and supervised by Sandy Schneider, Program Director. Current criteria to be considered for the exhibit is: a person who is 60 or older, has had a noticeable career of artistic attainment, is still creating, and has made a measurable impact on the Southwest Pennsylvania community. Subsequent exhibitions were held in 1993, 1996, and 1998 at the JCC, and in 2005 at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts. 2013 marks the sixth exhibition. The Steering Committee is planning for future exhibitions to occur every five years.

In 1993, Donna Hollen Bolmgren and Ellie Turk Barmen began interviewing and video recording each of the artists working in their studios. In subsequent years, Jerry Caplan joined Donna in the video documentation process. Several of the artists were interviewed and recorded by crews from WQED who generously volunteered their time and talents. The entire collection of documented MVA artists is housed at the Senator John Heinz History Center, and is available for viewing. Plans are in the works for previously recorded analog videos to be digitized, and a website is currently in development.

The video recording of this year’s artists was made possible by Pittsburgh Filmmakers and Pittsburgh Center for the Arts’ production services department. As this important documentation continues, we hope to draw awareness to the wealth of creative and talented visual artists in the Western Pennsylvania region. www.MasterVisualArtists.org

TadaoArimotoBorn and raised in Japan, Tadao came to the USA and established a working studio on the North Side of Pitts-burgh. He designs and builds functional surfaces with various machines and hand tools, using mostly domestic wood and stones.

A stone may have a cycle measured by millions of years, a tree for hundreds and a human for tens of years. As an organic material, a tree ‘dies’ once but the wood remains and that form could ‘live’ for hundreds of years. I feel that I leave my mark on the wood as a part of the process that wood goes through in its second cycle. I sometimes leave the markings left by a force of nature or human (typically a lumber jack or sawmill person) and hope that they can sug-gest the time and space the piece of wood went through.

Things get better with time. I feel that some objects can record time well by changing slowly with time in its cycle

and become even more beautiful than the beginning of its cy-cle. And the element that contributes to the change includes all aspects, even the accidental marking left by the user.

I like to design and build things that get better with time, so I should create the right design, use the right tool and apply the right finish to help them get better in their second cycle.

I design and build things with the user/owner in mind. I am not looking for a first impact or expression of my feelings.

The things I build will hope-fully stay in the user’s space for a long time. Thus, they should be physically strong, visually fairly quiet and highly functional.

TinaWilliams BrewerFor the past thirty years the mention of “story quilt” has been synonymous with just a few names and Tina Williams Brewer is one of them. As an internationally honored creator of story quilts, Tina is known for her artistic exploration of African American history and the experiences associated with it.

Her work is known for its celebration of the African dias-pora and has been displayed in locations as geographically distant and diverse as the United States Embassy in Sudan and Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum, Golden Colorado. Her work has been purchased or exhibited by more than 50 other prominent locations in the United States and overseas.

Brewer generously shares her talents with both young and old aspiring artists and has brought the joy of quilting to hundreds of individuals. She is a member of the board of directors of Pittsburgh Filmmakers/Pittsburgh Center for the

Arts, the Fiber Arts Guild of Pittsburgh and Women ofVisions. She is an emeritus board member of Associated Artists of Pittsburgh.

My hope is to bring a new vision to an ancient story. I work as a conduit for messages from ancestors in the form of the story quilt. Each quilt I create is a celebration of the African American heritage. At times this means addressing troubling issues – racism, the breakdown of the family, the loss of innocence in children and many other chal-lenges. It is my hope that people become inspired by the com-mon thread we all share which has been created by the African Diaspora.

GaryJurystaGary Jurysta holds an MFA in painting from Brooklyn College, New York, an MA in Art Education from the University of Pittsburgh, and a BS in Art Education from Edinboro Univer-sity of Pennsylvania. He has had a continually active painting career spanning five decades, with over fifty solo exhibitions and numerous group shows. Gary’s works are held in many private and public collections. His residence and studio are in the Highland Park section of Pittsburgh.

The decision to become an artist is a lifetime commitment from which I have not deviated. It has been a long process of self-motivation and self-education. My interests in paint-ing have evolved through many technical and stylistic chang-es and in the process a useful understanding has gradually informed my work. The essence of authentic “painting” I believe, resides in pure inventive abstraction.

The curatorial selections (three pieces) in this show demon-strate a consistent interest in a technique that explores and utilizes the fluid application of paint to achieve a dynamic visual result which could not have been predetermined. This type of painting epitomizes the meaning of the term “freedom of expression.” In my new work, I am attempting to locate that optimum moment of visual energy which exists in the process somewhere between gesture and resolution.

DavidLewisDavid Lewis is an architect, urban designer, writer, teacher, and artist living in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Born in 1922, he grew up in South Africa. He writes: “Even though I’ve been a U.S. citizen since 1967, my country’s struggle to become a free, open and plural democracy has been and continues to be a central influence in my life.”

With Ray Gindroz, he founded Urban Design Associates, (UDA) in 1964, to assist in the rebirth of American Cities. Today he lives in West Homestead, just east of Downtown Pittsburgh, along the Monongahela River.

David’s studio is typically full of birds, fish, lizards and other creatures in various stages of assembly. The animals have been sighted along 8th Avenue in Homestead where David and his wife Judith are actively working to regenerate the historic commercial street.

His awards include the Edward C. Kemper Award from the American Institute of Architects, the Athena Award from the Congress for the New Urbanism, the President’s Award from the International Downtown Association, and the Pennsylva-nia Gold Medal for Architecture.

David’s paintings and sculptures are exhibited at the Men-delson Gallery in Pittsburgh.

I wish to acknowledge my co-workers, Ethan Jones Walker and Geoffrey Blanchard at Red Star Ironworks in Millvale, as well as Jamie Clemente and Terry Tumulty at McKamish in Lawrenceville.

ConstanceMerrimanConstance Merriman is an artist and educator. She creates art works that are made in response to formal issues of art, and more recently, to the social and environmental impact caused by the world-wide extraction of fuel for energy. Merriman uses a wide variety of media to create works that have been exhib-ited in galleries, museums and public settings.

Lexicon - the wild animals that live in the city of Pittsburgh. The city of Pittsburgh is a patchwork of the built environment interspersed with rich greenspaces. Because of the city’s hilly topography, parks, abandoned neighborhoods and industrial sites, Pittsburgh has become a haven for migratory birds and species displaced by rural development. Wild creatures live not only in the city’s greenspaces, but have also taken up resi-dency in human structures that provide shelters that mimic the animal shelter in the wild. People and wild animals live a parallel existence. The people of the city are often unaware of the remarkable wildlife that shares our environment. But the

fact that animals live among us is an indicator that Pitts-burgh’s ecosystem has healed to the point that it has invited a broad variety of species to live here.

People often do not think of humans as a part of the Natural World. All living things share the environment. Once that fact is deeply understood, taking action to improve the ecosystem serves to make things better for herons and humans.

The works in the show are selected from a suite of drawings. They are pastel and ground on wood. Lexicon is being devel-oped into a series of prints and a book that will be available to the public.

RisëNaginAfter graduating from Carnegie Mellon University with a BFA in Painting, Risë Nagin worked as a textile colorist and es-tablished KOOKABURRA, a children’s clothing company. In 1975 she began her career as an independent artist, which continues to the present.

Nagin’s textiles, drawings and books have been exhibited internationally at the Museum of Art and Design, Helsinki, Finland; Craft Council Gallery, London, England; Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, France; The Contemporary Museum, Honolulu, Hawaii; the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Textile Museum, Washington, D.C.; Museum of Art and Design, New York City; Helen Drutt Gallery, Philadelphia and New York; Columbus Museum of Art, OH; Craft Alliance Center for Visual Arts, St. Louis, MO; Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery, CA; Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, Society for Contemporary Craft, Carnegie Museum

of Art, Three Rivers Art Festival Gallery, and the Mattress Factory Museum, Pittsburgh, PA.

The beauty of the material world, and some aspect of our ex-perience of it, serves as the point of departure. Although the imagery is abstract, it is informed by years of looking at the world, which is at once ordinary and amazing. The collage drawings made for this exhibition reflect an ongoing inter-est in exploring the meeting of inside/outside, front/back, a union of opposites -- that place where they are brought together by light and shadow, simultaneously separate and united.

ChuckOlsonChuck Olson was born in Pittsburgh and received a BS in Art Education and a MA in Painting from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, in addition to doing post-graduate work in painting at Tyler School of Art at Temple University. Over the course of the last three decades, he has been active in over 60 solo and 130 group exhibitions throughout the US, France, Germany, Italy and Japan. His work is held in numerous museum, university, corporate and private col-lections. Mr. Olson’s work is represented by several private galleries in the US and in Europe, most notably by James Gallery in Pittsburgh, PA. He has been a professor of Art at Saint Francis University, in Loretto, PA since 1976.

I choose to paint as I have always looked at painting as re-sponse and invention —an end game to experience, reading, and observation that seeks to extend curiosity and possibili-ties. Paintings are built by decision and reaction—often finding character in the many traces of this deliberation left on the canvas. Here, in the studio before a canvas, intellec-

tual curiosity and childlike wonder can clearly coexist. There remains, in our 21st century, great power in this.

My current work concerns itself with issues of space and time, as a result of living in a world where overt multitask-ing and pandemic “busyness” renders them as luxuries. I have become determined to paint a response to the need for them, even if I cannot succeed in fully creating it in the rou-tine of my day. This is in contrast to the complex, Baroque-like images often found within my work over the last 30 years. In these new images, complex-ity of form yields to a greater variation of color and tone. The duality between the simple and the complex is staged here in this exhibition, as it is the current dialogue found within my studio.

MarkPerrottPittsburgh native Mark Perrott has worked as a professional photographer for the past 40 years. In addition to his com-mercial work, Mark has, lifelong, made photographs that doc-ument Pittsburgh’s citizens, and its rich industrial landscape. In the early eighties, he gave special attention to the life and death struggle of steel in the Mon Valley. Photographs from this project were used to create the book ELIZA, published in 1989. He went on in 1999 to publish HOPE ABANDONED, a four-year investigation of Eastern State Penitentiary in Phila-delphia, Pennsylvania. In 2013 he published his third book, E BLOCK, an extended photo essay of Western Penitentiary. Mark’s photographs are included in several permanent museum collections, including Carnegie Museum of Art, and The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

ROOFTOP SIGNS: For more than 100 years the Edgar Thomson Works, Andrew Carnegie’s first steel mill, belched

smoke and fire along the banks of the Monongahela River in Braddock, Pennsylvania, just outside of Pittsburgh. As if the glowing red-orange sky from the Bessemer furnaces were not enough to identify its presence, a 10 foot tall by 200 foot long sign was erected on the roof, leaving no doubt as to the identity of this industrial leviathan.

Over the past 20 years I have been crisscrossing the country in an effort to document as many of these roof-mounted signs as I can, before they too succumb to the ravages of time and the inevitability of modern-ization.

MarjorieF. ShipeMarjorie F. Shipe is a painter, sculptor and designer of architectural works for private commissions. Her sculptures are in polyester resin, Plexiglas, and mixed media; and her paintings are on wood. With roots in industrial design, she has been an artist for more than 50 years.

These polyester resin sculptures are abstract, geometric, transparent, and relatively small in size. The titles refer to ideas/subjects expressed by color and arrangement of forms.

I am influenced by the properties of the material, its pos-sibilities, science, art history, proportion and mathmatics.Becoming an artist began with interest in and response to the visual and to art history. I benefited from instruction when I was young and at university, as well as from practice and observation throughout life. Combined with making a living in retail and teaching, family priorities, travel and

employment in foreign countries, (Europe and Denmark), I have been able to pursue art with support from family.

The Associated Artists of Pittsburgh (AAP) exhibitions, the support of Carnegie Museum of Art Director Leon Arkus (one person exhibition in 1976), and of Ellen Neuberg at Gallery Chiz have been very valuable and are much appreciated. I have also been President of AAP and member of the Board of Directors for several years.

Being chosen for the Masters is an honor for which I am pleased and grateful.

PaulZelevanskyPaul Zelevansky is an artist, writer, and teacher. His work includes digital animation, artist’s books, theoretical writing, curating, and graphic design. He has a BFA in Painting from Carnegie Mellon University, and a Masters in Educational Technology from Columbia Teachers’ College. His PhD, also from Columbia, is in art education, and he has been pub-lished widely on the use of text and image, web art, popular culture, and educational and aesthetic theory. His most recent book is 24 IDEAS ABOUT PICTURES, a primer com-posed of 24 visual/verbal propositions about the grammar, meaning, and metaphysics of pictures. His website, www.greatblankness.com, is devoted to an ongoing series of flash animation pieces made up of found images, texts, music samples, sound effects, and video. His video project, MIS-TER ROGERS FOR ADULTS--a series of one-minute public service announcements built on footage of Fred Rogers--can be seen on youtube at www.youtube.com/user/FRCmrfa.

After many years as an artist, writer, designer, and teacher, I no longer draw sharp distinctions between art-making, critical writing, and performance. My teaching and public lectures incorporate image and music, and my classes are structured to form a concrete link between critical think-ing and the practice of making art. The central pedagogical and philosophical goal is the development of a self-reflexive stance towards the multiple facets of language and form whether art, advertising, film, television, memorabilia, or the internet. This is also true for my video and animation work. Drawing on multiple sources, contemporary, historical, and autobiographical, anything is fair game for use or investigation. I think of this process as a kind of vast, multi-leveled, dynamic collage that moves backward and forward in time.

DonnaHollen BolmgrenOne noticed Donna Hollen Bolmgren’s quiet Nordic beauty. I remember visiting her in her studio in the space she rented from ceramic master Jerry Caplan. Donna was making paper from fabric. Trailing her hand in a water-filled tank, she stirred up white fiber that rose like a wedding veil out of the dark. One of Masters of Visual Artists first ideas was not only to champion Pittsburgh artists but to record them on video tape so that members and others in the future would be able to connect their words and images. We were particularly successful early on with Leonard Weiss’ interview but arrived too late to record Joseph C. Fitzpatrick or Mary Shaw Marohnic Horn in their prime. That was heartbreaking. Soon after this, Donna, who had sat in the MVA meetings from its early days, volunteered to continue the video program-ming. We welcomed her adding video to her other, better known visual talents. Then from Florida, I read how she painted her own physical decline from cancer, the news of her passing and her remember-ing MVA in her will. I and other Pittsburghers carry mental images of her paper masks that captured her face and her many paintings of bursting fireworks. Donna was a valiant artist to the end.

RememberingJane HaskellThis morning I sat in our sunlit garden thinking about Jane. A soft breeze stirred the upper foliages of the trees with spangles of green and silver. Red roses flashed beyond a bank of ferns. A bird called, and from a distance another an-swered. Jane would have loved these moments. For her, art was an open-ended and exploratory language. She loved abstract expressionism because it opened the doors of visual language to new freedoms. She loved light because it illumined space and shadows. And because freedom in art is by itself without meaning, she loved the challenge of new disciplines. She loved being a local artist because in our world of so-called “international” art, she knew that all art and all artists are essentially local in both time and place, and that the inner creative voices of all artists are essentially individual and alone. It was for these reasons that her sensitive but intelligent presence was so important on the Board of Carnegie Museum of Art, and in our lives. Thank you, Jane. For over half a century, you have enriched us as an artist, but most of all as a friend. Let me whisper, not goodbye, but adieu.
