    Scholarships at CDU

Charles Darwin University (CDU) has a variety of scholarships

to offer students studying in either the Higher Education or the

Vocational Education and Training (VET) sectors during 2013.

CDU scholarships are sponsored by individuals, businesses,

government, community groups and the University to assist

students with the financial burden of studying. Some of the

scholarships offer students the opportunity to participate in

paid work experience during semester breaks and graduate

    positions on completion of study.

Applying for a scholarship is easy. This booklet will guide you

    through the process.

Please note:while every effort is made to ensure that the

details in this booklet are accurate at the time of printing,

there may be changes to the scholarships being offered or

there may be additional scholarships offered later in the year.

Please check W: cdu.edu.au/scholarships for the most up to

date information before making your application.

    Frequently asked questions

    How are scholarships awarded?

Each scholarship has its own eligibility criteria. Applicants

must address the criteria in their application and provide any

supporting documentation requested on the application form.

The applicant who best meets this eligibility criteria and who

is approved by the Scholarship Selection Committee is offered

    the scholarship(s).

Eligibility requirements may include: academic merit, Grade

Point Average (GPA) or Australian Tertiary Admission Rank

(ATAR), equity criteria (financial hardship, sole parent/carer,

medical condition/disability, Indigenous etc.), location (rural

or isolated), personal attributes, performance at interview or acombination of these criteria.

There is also a group of high achievers scholarships. These

scholarships are assessed on the entrance rank of the

applicants. It is not necessary to complete an application

for these scholarships. Students who are eligible for these

scholarships will be contacted by Charles Darwin University.

How do I apply for a scholarship?

    1. Go to the website. W: cdu.edu.au/scholarships

    2. Download the information sheets for the scholarshipsyou would like to apply for and check that you meet the

    eligibility criteria.

    3. Download the relevant application form and guidelines

found under the How to apply section of the scholarships

    website.

    4. Complete your application, including all certified supporting

documentation that is required, and submit to the

Scholarships Officer by email (preferred) E: [email protected], fax F: 08 8946 6642, or post to Scholarships

    Frequently asked questions

Can I receive more than one scholarship?

In some instances students may be awarded more than one

scholarship. This will depend on the eligibility criteria of the

scholarships for which you are applying. You are advised to

apply for all scholarships for which you are eligible. In the

event that you are offered more than one scholarship, and one

states that you may not be in receipt of another scholarship,

you will then need to decide which scholarship to accept.

When do I find out if I have been awarded a scholarship?

Whether you are successful or unsuccessful, you will receive

notification by email. When you will receive this email will

depend on the scholarship you have applied for. Most applicantswill be notified before Census date, but delays can occur.

If successful, when do I get paid?

You will be notified of the outcome of your application/s

by email. When you receive the email acknowledging your

success, you will also receive a Scholarship Protocol and a

Commercial in Confidence Form. Your scholarship money will

be credited to your nominated bank account.

Scholarship payments are made within 30 days of the Census

dates in Semester 1 and Semester 2.

    2013 Census dates are:

    Semester 1: 31 March 2013

    Semester 2: 31 August 2013.

The scholarship states that it runs for three years, but I

only have two years remaining on my course. Can I still

    apply?

Yes. The scholarship panel will decide whether they will accept

your application so it is still a good idea to apply. In most cases

you will receive the same payments each semester, meaning

you may not be entitled to the full amount but you will receive

payments each semester for the remainder of your course,

providing you meet all other eligibility criteria.

In some cases the scholarship will be paid to you at a higher

rate per semester to ensure you receive the full scholarshipamount, but this is at the discretion of the scholarship

    provider.

How can I spend the scholarship money?

Most scholarships are paid directly into your bank account. It

is your responsibility to manage your scholarship funds and

use them effectively towards your study. We do not ask for

receipts or explanations of how your funds have been used so

you are free to choose how the money is spent. You may want

to use the funds, towards textbooks and materials, fees or even

other expenses such as transport costs or living expenses.

Some scholarships may pay the funds directly towards your

fees or towards an account at the University bookshop. This

will be specified in the scholarship information.
