tHe stoRy Legendary lover. Sadistic manipulator. Cold-blooded villain. Has there ever been a more irrepressible rogue than Don Giovanni? Mozart’s 1787 opera, subtitled “Il Dissoluto Punito”(“The Reprobate Punished”), follows Giovanni as he forces his way into the hearts of women and taunts the men who love them. When an attempted conquest ends in murder, Giovanni receives a ghostly visitor who delivers his comeuppance. tHe oPeRa Last seen at Music Hall in 2004, Don Giovanni stars suave baritone Lucas Meachem in the title role. The Financial Times called his portrayal “both dangerous and alluring, with daredevil charm matched by vocal noblesse.” Nicole Cabell lends her “luminous voice” (New York Times) to the role of Donna Elvira, and Angela Meade, proclaimed “astounding” by The New Yorker, sings Donna Anna. Burak Bilgili is Giovanni’s reluctant wingman, Leporello.

tHe stoRy It starts off simply enough: Boy meets girl and falls head over heels. But in opera—as in life—the path to happily-ever-after can be a thorny one. A Viennese noblewoman relishes the affection of her young lover, but quietly dreads the day his heart will find true love. And then, it happens: the young man spies the lovely Sophie, and he’s forever changed. After learning she’s promised to an oafish old baron, he hatches a hilarious plot to set her free, with the help of a surprising ally.

tHe oPeRa If you’ve laughed at The Barber of Seville’s antics or reveled in Strauss’s beautiful melodies, you’ll adore Der Rosenkavalier (“The Knight of the Rose”), which blossoms with sublime music and bittersweet charm. As the Marschallin, Twyla Robinson offers a voice of “easy grace and beauty” (San Diego Union-Tribune). Sarah Coburn, the “sweet ... radiant ... flawless” soprano (Washington Post ), is Sophie, with Ruxandra Donose lending her “bright, supple voice” (Musical America) to the “pants” role of Octavian.

So begins a retrospective journey through the remarkable events of Galileo’s life: his imprisonment for heresy, his defense of science, and back to his earliest days of inspiration, invention, and discovery. Through the lens of one man’s extraordinary experience, Galileo Galilei explores profound questions of religion and science, faith and truth.

tHe oPeRa At its 2002 premiere, the New York Times called Galileo Galilei “invigorating” with “sweetly lyrical touches.” Our production marks many historic firsts: The company’s first opera by Academy Award-nominated composer Philip Glass, one of the most influential musicians of our time.
