Intrinsic Motivation-
An athlete is intrinsically motivated when he or she chooses to take part in an
activity or sport for its own sake. This athlete will thrive on the pleasure and
satisfaction that is derived from playing.
As opposed to Extrinsic Motivation…

Key Components on Intrinsic Motivation-
In order for your players to be intrinsically motivated they have certain needs:
Competence: Feeling talented and skilled
Autonomy: In control; doing what they want
Relatedness: Feeling connected with others…

Coaches Role-You are the driver of their CAR.
You’re actions, communication skills, behavior, and much more, determine
whether the CAR runs smoothly or if it has the potential to break down.

Motivational speeches, whilst appropriate in some circumstances, are not conducive to

Their motivations fluctuate over time pending situations and it is up to us as coaches not only to identify when motivation fluctuates but also when to step in and effectively address it…

CASE STUDY:
Professional boxer whose management were engaged in a legal battle with previous coaches and managers for three years. This boxer retired at aged 30.

MOTIVATION GUIDELINES- Motivate yourself 1st- Motivation is about shared responsibility- Motivation is about selling - Motivation is about having and providing direction- Motivation is an ongoing process- Motivation lies in your relationship with the players- Motivate with challenges rather than threats- Have a big enough WHY?- Be careful with discipline - Don’t over do motivation…

A motivated athlete can quickly lose motivation in the absence of knowledge, skill provision or a suitable role, which means increased effort will count for nothing…

Reinforcement & Instruction:
Verbal/non-verbal appraisal can be fantastic intrinsic motivators.
However, they need to be reinforced with positive instruction. As coaches, we need to identify when we NEED to instruct.

Focus on Performance not Outcome:
An outcome oriented environment at ANY stage of learning can be detrimental to Intrinsic Motivation.
As coaches we can’t guarantee outcomes, but we can influence performances…

Be Fair
Avoid having your players question why they even bother turning up to practice.
“I train everyday and am always on time, but then Johnny turns up to practice once a
week but plays all the games!”

Make Learning Fun:A lot of coaches across the world treat
coaching like an opportunity to become a drill sergeant or take on a role of power.
Negative terms such as “suicide runs” breeds negativity in practice which
transfers into performance and increases fear of failure.
Intrinsically Motivated players are willing to achieve!
