An athlete is intrinsically motivated when he or she chooses to take part in an

activity or sport for its own sake. This athlete will thrive on the pleasure and

satisfaction that is derived from playing.

Reinforcement & Instruction:

Verbal/non-verbal appraisal can be fantastic intrinsic motivators.

However, they need to be reinforced with positive instruction. As coaches, we need to identify when we NEED to instruct.

Make Learning Fun:A lot of coaches across the world treat

coaching like an opportunity to become a drill sergeant or take on a role of power.

Negative terms such as “suicide runs” breeds negativity in practice which

transfers into performance and increases fear of failure.
