Please have items at the curb ready for pickup by 6:00 a.m. on the assigned collection day
Items ACCEPTED in your YARDWASTE container include: Grass clippings, leaves, weeds, brush, branches smaller than four inches in diameter, and Christmas trees in season.
Items NOT ACCEPTED in YARDWASTE containers include: Trash, stumps, lumber, bricks, glass, metal, food, plastics, rocks or excessive amounts of dirt. All yardwaste must fit in the container with the lid closed. Call your hauler for assistance if you have more yardwaste than will fit in the container. NEVER set out yardwaste in a plastic bag. All yardwaste collected through the curbside program will be composted at the County-owned Purdy Compost Facility.
Items ACCEPTED in the SINGLE-STREAM container include: Newspapers, magazines and junk mail, cardboard, tin and aluminum cans, paper-style milk cartons, shredded paper, paper bags, milk jugs, phone books, cereal boxes, frozen food boxes and plastic bottles (with necks smaller than the base).
Items NOT ACCEPTED in the SINGLE-STREAM container include: Glass of any sort, styrofoam peanuts or containers, batteries, aerosol cans, toxic product containers, plastic lids, tubs, or bags, light bulbs, foil, frozen food or chip bags, pill boxes, juice boxes, metal hangers, or food-contaminated paper plates and napkins.
WHAT TO DO ON RECYCLING DAY: Carts should be at the curb by 6 a.m. on recycling day. The cart handles must face the house; the lid opening must face the street. Put the cart at curbside or within 3 feet of the traveled portion of the road. The cart should be at least 3 feet away from basketball hoops, trees, mailboxes and other containers. Place the cart 5 feet from cars. Allow 18 feet of space above the cart too, so the automated robotic “arm” on the collection truck has room to grasp the cart and operate most effectively. Do not block mailboxes. Please remove the empty cart from the curb as soon as possible. If you have questions about either of the curbside recycling programs, please call LeMays at 537-8687.

Since 1841 when Captain Charles Wilkes organized the first Independence Day celebration in the area (records show that it was held near American Lake) the Fourth of July festivities have been popular events. Around the South Sound region, no celebration holds the widespread appeal as the one held right here in the “Town on the Sound.” We put on a real old-fashioned community event that draws hundreds of visitors from sun-up until long after sundown. In recent years, the Steilacoom Chamber of Commerce has coordinated this gala event in cooperation with the Town of Steilacoom.
The festivities begin bright and early with a Fun Run with the St Fair opening shortly thereafter. Colorful booths fill Lafayette St with a variety of vendors selling tasty treats; arts and crafts; flowers and plants; and some of the best barbeque ever at the Colonel’s Famous BBQ Beef Sandwich Stand. You can stop by for some adult refreshments at the Beer Garden located on the town tennis courts at the corner of Lafayette and Wilkes Sts. If you would like to be a vendor at our next Fourth of July celebration, contact the Chamber of Commerce at (253) 353-6982.
Make sure you find a comfortable location to view the annual Fourth of July Parade. The Parade is the centerpiece of the day’s activities
Steilacoom’s Grand Old Fourth of July Celebration
and starts at 1:00PM. The 1-1/4 mile parade route starts at Perkins Park on Union St, proceeds north on Rainier St, taking a
turn toward the water at Main St then south onto Lafayette St through the vendor booth location
where there is a performance area and our Master of Ceremonies announcing each
spectacular entry. Hundreds of brightly costumed folks and floats of every
type are featured in this home-spun, one-of-kind procession
and it’s put together each year by Veva Maddox, (from Steilacoom Marine & Spirits) who assembles the best and the brightest to present this fabulous show that never fails to wow the crowd. If you’d like to participate in this terrific
event, you can contact Veva at (253) 584-4177 for a parade
application form.
As the day wears on, many of the celebrants return to their own family
picnics to prepare for an evening of fun including a 7 p.m. St Dance and the final show:
Fireworks Over Puget Sound! This spectacular grand finale is funded solely by donations solicited each year by the
Steilacoom Citizens Fireworks Committee who hit the Sts as early as March, going door-to-door to gain financial support for this great show. Sales of a commemorative T-shirt and buttons are also sold to help defray costs of this aerial show.
Bring your family and please join us at the next Steilacoom Grand Old Fourth of July. You’ll be delighted you did!
