spAce to be spontAneousInside the Outback, space is intelligently distributed so that you can change the

seating and storage configuration in an instant. 60/40 folding rear seats allow you

to haul large items and various passengers as you need, so you can adjust to a

different arrangement as the situation requires.

MAKing rooM, MAde eAsYWhen you need to create some space, levers in the 2nd-row seating area make

folding down the rear seats simple and easy.

VersAtilitY With securitYOutback’s retractable cargo cover helps to keep luggage out of view and away

from sunlight. With lightweight yet sturdy aluminum construction, the cover is easily

removed to make way for larger cargo when the rear seats are folded down.

engine for an almost perfectly symmetrical layout, the Subaru Symmetrical Full-Time AWD system

maximizes the power delivery with exceptional traction and generates balance and stability for

total control in almost any condition, giving you the confidence to delight in every kilometre.

subAru boXer® engine

WhAt’s inside: The new 2.5 L SUBARU BOXER® engine combines trademark horizontally

opposed design with all-new technological refinement.

WhAt it does: Its naturally balanced smoothness and low-profile handling advantages are

matched by even greater economy and response.

redesigned engine

The SUBARU BOXER® engine has always offered exceptional balance and

smooth response, but we’ve figured out a way to make driving a Subaru even

more inspiring. Subaru engineers painstakingly reviewed the effectiveness

of every valve, port and piston to create an engine that is lighter and uses

fuel more efficiently. Not only does this new engine achieve new heights of

efficiency, but it offers better low-end torque response—meaning you’ll feel

immediate, satisfying response every time the accelerator is pressed.

Keep your profile low, and your expectations high.

2.5-LITRE DOHCSUBARU BOXER®

Refined vigor is the signature of this smooth powerplant. Double

overhead camshafts (DOHC) and the dual Active Valve Control

System (AVCS) enhance performance and reduce CO2 emissions,

while its horizontally opposed layout naturally cancels out

vibration. From its free-breathing intake to its free-flowing exhaust,

the 3.6-litre DOHC SUBARU BOXER® makes driving seem all the

more effortless and exhilarating with low-end torque response.

Paired with the Lineartronic® CVT, this SUBARU BOXER® engine is

efficient and clean. Not only is this engine a new step forward for

Subaru environmental responsibility, it’s also an equally impressive

performer. With the natural balance and smoothness inherent

in its SUBARU BOXER® configuration, and DOHC and AVCS to

enhance its performance, it delivers eager response at lower rpm.

By combining response and exceptional efficiency, it’s an engine

that will give you more fun with less fuel.

long-lAsting perforMAnce

The engine’s flat design is inherently rigid and self-balancing, generating

less vibration than “V-type” or “in-line” engines for more durability and more

reliable performance.

increAsed stAbilitY

Because the engine block has a flatter profile and sits lower in the chassis, the

overall vehicle is more stably balanced and resistant to side-to-side motion

than other designs.

sMooth poWer

At any rpm the engine delivers immediate, responsive power that comes on

smooth. The pistons lay flat and work against each other to reduce vibrations,

making the ride as comfortable as it is exciting.

WhAt’s inside: Outback offers a choice in transmissions—including the highly efficient Lineartronic® CVT—each one mated

to its own variation of Symmetrical AWD.

WhAt it does: No matter how you choose to control the engine’s performance, you’ll always enjoy the solid balance and

control of Symmetrical AWD.

Confidence in every gear.

lineArtronic® cVt + ActiVe torque split AWdThe Outback achieves new levels of response and efficiency with the

Lineartronic® CVT. By keeping the engine running in its optimal rev range

and preserving the momentum that’s often lost during a gear shift, this

unique transmission dramatically improves fuel efficiency. And thanks to

a compact and lightweight configuration designed specially to work with

the SUBARU BOXER® engine, it ensures quick response and engaging

performance. It’s longitudinally paired with an active torque split AWD

system that responds to traction conditions, the transmission and driver

inputs by continuously controlling the torque distribution front to rear.

pAddle shiftersTo keep you always in control of your Outback, the Lineartronic® CVT

includes a sporty manual mode with paddle shifters mounted on the

steering wheel. They allow you to quickly access higher revs and greater

engine power.

6-speed MAnuAl trAnsMission + Viscous centre differentiAl AWdFor maximum control and sporty satisfaction, a slick-shif ting

6-speed manual transmission for 2.5i puts extra gearing at your

disposal. Not only does this transmission help improve efficiency

at higher speeds, but its short-throw design has been enhanced

for quick, smooth and intuitive operation. And pairing it with a

viscous limited-slip centre differential (LSD) helps you maintain an

inspiring hold on the road, even in low-traction conditions.

5-speed AutoMAtic trAnsMission + VAriAble torque distribution AWdOutback 3.6R models are equipped with a refined 5EAT automatic

transmission paired with Variable Torque Distribution (VTD)

AWD. VTD distributes the engine’s torque to all four wheels while

focusing on the rear wheels to suit the conditions, for enhanced

handling, superior traction and stability. The electronically

controlled 5-speed transmission features driver-adaptive shifting,

blipping control for quicker, smoother downshifts, and manual-

style control via paddle shifters.

WhAt’s inside: A wealth of components harmoniously interacting with each other, while instantly changing the way they respond based on

your input. And all with one goal in mind: perfect handling.

WhAt it does: With each part, big and small, working in concert with the rest, the Outback achieves a unique balance between taut response

and a smooth ride. Giving you responsiveness with security, no matter the conditions.

greAter stAbilitY And coMfortOutback elevates the inherent advantages of its signature Subaru

layout—balance, composure and response—with Subaru DC3. The body

uses more high-tensile steel in critical areas to achieve high strength

with flexibility. Handling is made even more surefooted and stable,

while the ride is made more comfortable.

sMoother, quieter rideA highly rigid Cradle Mount front-end structure delivers an accurate,

natural steering feel while allowing the engine and suspension to be

effectively isolated from the cabin for a smoother, quieter ride. The

result is everything that makes driving a pleasure: confidence with

comfort, sportiness with safety, and elegance with efficiency—all in

perfect balance.

front suspension Working in harmony with Subaru DC3, Outback’s strut-type front

suspension features the highly rigid Cradle Mount System, a wide tread

and long wheel travel. Together they deliver flatter cornering as well as

a quieter, more comfortable ride over a variety of road surfaces.

reAr suspensionExpertly balancing sporty handling with refinement, Outback’s double

wishbone rear suspension is the perfect complement to Subaru DC3,

handling rough roads and sharp corners with poise and precision.

In control. Out of danger.WhAt’s inside:Outback’s superb handling, all-wheel drive stability and advanced active safety systems for

control in those moments that can’t be predicted.

WhAt it does:Swift and predictable reaction helps you steer out of harm’s way. Because surviving an

accident is best done by avoiding it altogether.

ActiVe sAfetY, to help You AVoid A collision

At Subaru, our goal is to inspire confidence through peace of mind on the road. This means bringing safe mobility to everyone’s

lives, for a stress-free driving experience so that you can focus on your rewarding adventure in the Outback. Many of the

same features which make Outback so satisfying to drive also contribute to its serious dedication to keeping its occupants

out of harm’s way. The stable, responsive handling of its Symmetrical Full-Time AWD assures control in virtually any weather

conditions. And the SUBARU BOXER® engine enhances this security, thanks to its lower centre of gravity, creating an even

closer connection to the road. Its standard Vehicle Dynamics Control and generously sized brakes endow it with athletic

reflexes, while the added precision of a Cradle Mount System for its suspension and steering equips the driver for excellent

evasive abilities. All because Subaru believes the best way to survive a collision is not to have one in the first place.

brAKing sYsteM

The standard 4-wheel disc brakes feature lightweight aluminum

rear calipers and a strong, reassuring brake feel. The Antilock

Braking System (ABS) includes Electronic Brake-force Distribution,

to reapportion front/rear braking pressure when the vehicle is

loaded. Brake Assist provides greater force in sudden braking

even if the driver doesn’t brake hard enough. And Subaru’s Hill

Holder helps prevent rollback when starting off on a 5% or steeper

grade, by applying the electronic parking brake and automatically

releasing it once you’re under way.

Vehicle dYnAMics control sYsteM

Standard in every Outback, Vehicle Dynamics Control monitors and

analyses if the vehicle is following the driver’s intended course via

an array of sensors. If the vehicle approaches the limits of stability,

the automatic transmission’s AWD torque distribution, engine

output and brakes at each wheel are adjusted to assist in keeping

the vehicle on course.

pAssiVe sAfetY, to better surViVe A collisionAt Subaru, there is never an end to the pursuit of safety. We set high standards,

constantly enhancing features while earning acclaim along the way. But even

with the most advanced active safety systems, sometimes an accident is simply

inevitable. That is why Outback is designed to protect its occupants with a series

of advanced systems and features, balancing rigid strength with controlled

deformation in key areas to better manage impact forces. The Cradle Mount System

for its engine effectively lengthens the front crumple zone. Each side door includes

two side-impact protection beams. A comprehensive suite of airbags1, whiplash-

reducing front seats, retracting pedals and 3-point seatbelts help protect occupants

directly. It’s a core value of the Subaru philosophy that peace of mind is the first step

in providing driving enjoyment.

seAts, seAtbelts And srs1 AirbAgsStandard on the Outback are front SRS1 airbags, plus front-side and curtain

SRS1 airbags. Height-adjustable front seatbelts feature pretensioners to hold

passengers firmly in place, and load limiters that ease peak forces to the chest.

In a rear collision, front seats utilize rigid frames, firm headrests and such details

as energy-absorbing mounting of the inner seat springs, all to help reduce the

chance of whiplash.

pedestriAn protectionOutback was designed with the objective of providing a high

level of pedestrian protection. Shock-absorbing space between

the head and engine helps to reduce pedestrian injury in

an accident, as do an energy-absorbing front bumper and a

specially designed area around the windshield wipers.

ring-shAped reinforceMent frAMesThe Ring-Shaped Reinforcement Frames s t rengthen the

passenger cabin from the roof to the doors, pillars and floor. This

design helps to divert and dissipate impact energy away from

the occupants in a collision. The front crumple zone is integral to

the frame, while the cradle mounting for the engine is designed

to help keep these components far ther from the passenger

compartment in a front impact.

WhAt’s inside:Advanced safety features, restraint systems and the surrounding body structure all work together to provide maximum protection.

WhAt it does:When the unthinkable happens, Outback’s engineering provides an inside-out approach to protecting its occupants with

celebrated Subaru safety.

breAK AWAY engineEvery Subaru goes above and beyond common practice when it comes to your

safety. In the event of a head-on collision, your Outback’s SUBARU BOXER®

engine and gearbox are driven under the front seat occupants and away from

the cabin for your protection.

Comprehensive protection is at its heart.

1 The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) affords the driver and passenger additional protection in some collisions. This system provides supplemental protection only, and seatbelts must be worn in order to avoid injuries to out-of-position occupants upon airbag

deployment. The combination of SRS and seatbelts provides the best protection in a serious accident.

1 EyeSight is a driver-assist system which may not operate optimally under all driving conditions. The driver is always responsible for safe and attentive driving. System effectiveness depends on many factors such as vehicle maintenance, and weather and road conditions.

See Owner’s Manual for complete details on system operation and limitations.

At Subaru, we’re dedicated to bringing new technology to help protect

our vehicles’ occupants. Combining safety and convenience, the Outback

is available with our innovative new driver-assist system — EyeSight™1. Like

a second pair of eyes monitoring the road ahead, it can detect obstacles

in front of the car, send a warning to alert you, and adjust your speed to

limit potential damage and possibly avoid it altogether.

our Vision. Your safety.

pre-collision throttle MAnAgeMent

With the Pre-Collision Throttle Management

feature, EyeSight™ will help minimize or assist

you in avoiding impact with large objects in front

of your Outback by preventing acceleration, even

when the accelerator is fully applied. It can also

help to reduce impacts in situations when “Drive”

is accidentally selected instead of “Reverse” by

cutting power if it sees an object in your path.

pre-collision brAKing

With the help of Pre-Collision Braking, should a

driver ahead of you unexpectedly hit their brakes

or cut you off, EyeSight™ will warn you, apply the

brakes to help you slow your Outback, and at lower

speeds can even help you stop.

lAne depArture And sWAY WArning

In the event that you accidentally drift your Outback

to the edge of your lane and begin to cross into

another, EyeSight’s™ Lane Departure and Sway

Warning features watch for clearly marked lane

markers and deliver a chime to warn you.

AdAptiVe cruise control

Traffic doesn’t always flow, but with EyeSight’s™

Adaptive Cruise Control feature, you not only can

keep your Outback at a set speed, but you can also

look ahead and help keep your speed automatically

adjusted so that your Outback maintains a safe

distance from the car ahead of you. It even has the

ability to bring your Outback to a complete stop

and then resume moving when traffic has begun

moving again.

Subaru vehicles are uniquely designed to get out there more—and to leave it out there less. We build our vehicles for maximum longevity because more time spent on the road equals less time spent in junkyards and landfills. Fully 95.4% of our vehicles sold in Canada over the last 10 years are still on the road today.1 You’ll also find very little waste created in the production of a Subaru—many of our vehicles are built in the Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc., (SIA) factory, which was the first manufacturing facility in the U.S. to achieve zero-landfill status. Other Subaru facilities around the world now achieve similar goals in helping to preserve the environment. Respect for our surroundings is yet another way that Subaru vehicles help to build driver confidence for the road ahead.

1 Based on R. L. Polk Canada, Inc. Canadian Vehicle In Operation data as of July 2, 2011, for model years 2002–2011. Actual longevity of any car will vary based upon operating conditions.

The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS airbags) affords the driver and passenger additional protection in some collisions. This system provides supplemental protection only, and seatbelts must be worn in order to avoid injuries to out-of-position occupants upon airbag deployment. The combination of SRS and seatbelts provides the best protection in a serious accident.
