WILLAMETTE UNIVERSITY TRACK & FIELD
Willamette University is proud to provide opportunities for student-athletes to attain great accomplishments in athletics and in the classroom.
Bearcat athletes excel on their respective teams throughout the year. Several teams have attained postseason success during recent seasons, continuing a history of excellence in Willamette Athletics. These teams and athletes also shine in the classroom. From Academic All-District and Academic All-America selections to several Fulbright, Kemper and NCAA Postgraduate scholarship winners, WU athletes have been honored for theiracademic achievements. It is this combination, along with a strong commitment to community service and Willamette’s motto, “Not unto ourselves alone are we born,” that makes BearcatAthletics great.

Matt McGuirk is in his 10th year as the head track and field coach at Willamette University and is in his 14th year on the coaching staff. He was named NCAA Division III National Coach of the Year in 2004 (men) and 2007 (women).
In both 2004 and 2005, the Willamette men’s team ended the year by bringing home NCAA trophies for Top 4 finishes. The Bearcats have set a high bar of excellence in the Northwest Conference by winning 11 of the last 18 men’s and women’s team titles since 2004.
At Willamette, McGuirk and his staff have coached 25 athletes to 48 NCAA All-America performances. They have helped WU athletes win 322 All-Conference awards.
One of McGuirk’s top athletes was seven-time NCAA national champion Nick Symmonds, who won the 1,500 three times and the 800 four times. He was fifth in the 800 at the 2012 London Olympics, fifth at the World Championships in 2011 and was sixth in 2009. Symmonds was
also a semifinalist at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He has won five U.S. national titles in the 800, placed second twice and has claimed two indoor titles.
Among McGuirk’s proudest achievements is coaching three Bearcats, Jacob Stout, Aaron Hollingshead and Scott Overby, to All-America status at the 2004 NCAA Championships in the steeplechase, his primary race as a collegiate and professional runner.

“Willamette is the ideal place for a student who is looking for high quality academics and athletics. It’s my honest belief that if an individual chooses Willamette and decides to be successful in and out of the classroom, the opportunity will be provided.”

Brett Franz returns to the Bearcat coaching staff for his seventh season. Franz heads up the sprints and jumps group during the track and field season, and also helps coach the cross country teams.
Since 2008, Willamette sprinters and jumpers have won 20 NWC individual championships and four NWC relay championships, along with 58 All-NWC performances. Franz has coached seven athletes at the NCAA Championships, including three All-America performances.
Prior to joining the Willamette coaching staff Franz was the head men’s and women’s cross country and distance coach at Lindenwood University (Mo.) and the head assistant coach for the track and field teams. At Lindenwood, Franz worked with a squad that had 50 NAIA Track and Field All-Americans, including 11 NAIA National Champions. The Lindenwood men won an NAIA indoor national championship, as well as a runner-up finish in outdoor track. In cross country, Franz led the Lindenwood men to a third place finish at the NAIA national meet while coaching the NAIA individual champion and runner-up. Franz was named the Heart of America Conference and NAIA Region V Coach of the Year in cross country as well as the NAIA National Assistant Coach of the Year for indoor track.
Franz earned a master’s degree in Athletic Administration from Lindenwood. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Business from Western Oregon University.

Prior to his arrival at Willamette, McGuirk was the first head coach at Wilsonville High School and built the cross country program from the ground up. In only its fifth year of existence, the school won its first State cross country title. Since then, Wilsonville has annually been one of the top Class 3A programs in Oregon.
McGuirk is a native of Eugene, Ore. After completing a decorated high school career at South Eugene High School, McGuirk embarked upon an excellent college career at the University of Oregon. At U of O, he became a member of a select group by lettering eight times in cross country and track and field. McGuirk put his name in the Oregon record books by racing to All-America status in the steeplechase in 1984, helping the Ducks win the NCAA outdoor track and field national championship. He graduated from the University of Oregon with a bachelor’s degree and a major in Finance and Marketing.
McGuirk has demonstrated an ability to transfer his athletic experiences into true coaching expertise, allowing dedicated student-athletes to realize immediate results while working toward long-term goals.

Gery Ellibee has been a fixture in Willamette track and field for four decades. Ellibee currently coaches the sprinters and the jumpers.
Ellibee has worked with some of the top jumpers
in Northwest Conference history, including Lindsey Patterson, who was an All-America long jumper in 2004.
He competed at Willamette as a standout jumper and as a football player. As a Bearcat, he set six school records in the sprints and jumps. Ellibee still holds the long jump record with a leap of 23’ 9.75”.
While completing graduate school, he began helping his college coach, Chuck Bowles, with the Willamette track and field program. Ellibee has been the Bearcats’ emotional leader ever since.
Prior to attending Willamette, Ellibee was a junior college All-American at Spokane Falls Community College, where he helped two distance medley teams set national records.
Chris Sabato has been a part of the Bearcat staff since 2005. He works with the pole vaulters, sprinter and jumpers.
In 2011 Sabato coached Katie Mariman to a school record vault of 11’5.75”.
He also has coached six of Willamette’s top 10 female vaulters.
He attended Alfred University in Alfred, N.Y., where he graduated in 2002 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. During his collegiate track and field career, Sabato competed in the sprints, long jump and pole vault.
Along with his coaching duties, Sabato is an administrator in the Athletics Department and holds the title of creative project specialist.
Sabato times all Willamette meets and is regionally recognized as a Finish Lynx operator. He was interviewed by the New York Timesto help explain the unprecidented tie in the women’s 100m at the 2012 Olympic Trials.

The 2013 Bearcat track and field teams come into the season hungry to bring the Northwest Conference Championships back to Salem. Willamette graduated several national caliber athletes, but picked up some talented freshmen to help fill the losses.
On the men’s side, senior Kit Kingstad is the defending champion in the 1,500m in the NWC and is looking for a return trip to the NCAA Championships. He is third on WU’s all-time list at 3:50.23. Junior Parker Bennett is the defending conference champion in the 5,000m. Bennett also won the 2012 NWC Cross Country title.
Last year, junior Max Faulhaber just missed qualifing for the NCAA Championships in the hammer and is currently third on WU’s all-time list, three spots ahead of senior Wyatt Briggs. Both Faulhaber and Briggs will help the Bearcats in the throws.
Senior Theresa Edwards is the defending conference champion in the 800m and 1,500m. She finished 18th at the 2012 NCAA Championships in the 1500m. Sophomore Michaela Freeby handily won the conference steeplechase title in 2012 and will look to distance herself from the crowd. She was 13th at the NCAA Championships. Freeby will also be a force in the 800m or 1,500m.
Elisa Ahern, Bekah Daniel and Taylor Ottomano make for a very strong jumps group. Ahern was the triple jump conference champion in 2012. Daniel and Ottomano won’t be far behind in 2013.
The 2013 Northwest Conference Championships will be hosted by Willamette and the Bearcats welcome the home field advantage.
WHERE WE’RE GOINGOver the past 10 years Willamette track and field has been a dominant force in the Northwest Conference. The Bearcat men and women have won 15 of the last 22 Northwest Conference Championships, including nine consecutive wins by the women from 2002-10.
In 2012, Jaela Dinsmore `12 earned All-America honors in the 100m by finishing 5th at the NCAA Division III Track & Field Championships. She was also 11th in the 200m. Dinsmore’s excellent accademic record earned her the NCAA Elite 89 Award and a Fulbright Grant.
Four other athletes represented WU at the NCAA Championships. Kit Kingstad and Theresa Edwards qualified in the 1,500-meter run. Michaela Freeby qualified for the finals in the steeplechase and Brandi Miller competed in the heptathlon.
At the NWC Championships, Jaela Dinsmore won the 100m and 200m. Edwards, Freeby and Kaitlin Greene `12 swept the women’s 1,500m. Edwards also claimed first place in the 800m. Elisa Ahern was the triple jump champion.
Paul Winger `12 won his fourth 400m title in as many years and Kingstad took the 1,500m crown. Ben Donovan `12 won his third straight steeplchase title.
Willamette University awarded Jaela Dinsmore the Jean Williams Award and Paul Winger the J. Henry Booth Award. These are given to the top graduating Willamette student-athletes. A track or cross country woman has won the Williams Award for the last eight years. A men’s team member has won five of the last eight Booth Awards.

PAGE 36 ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Student-athletes are at Willamette to get a high quality education. While many of the things you learn as a member of the team will follow you throughout your life, it’s the classroom work that will set you on a path to success.
The track and field program makes great efforts to be sure that student-athletes have every opportunity to succeed academically. Practice schedules are often moved around academic conflicts, and missed class due to travel is kept to a minimum. Many student-athletes perform better in the classroom while in season. The track program takes great pride in the academic success of its student-athletes.
COMMITMENT TO ACADEMICS ACADEMIC AWARDSThe track and field teams routinely maintain some of the highest cumulative GPAs in the Athletics Department. Track athletes have earned numerous academic awards, including six NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships and nine CoSIDA Academic All-America awards.
Among the Bearcats’ academically distinguished alumni are Chris Platano `10, who was a Kemper Scholar and earned an Elite 88 award during cross country; Jaela Dinsmore `12, Lucas Nebert `08 and Ali Maki `09, who each won Fulbright Grants; and Natalie Muren `06, who was awarded a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship.
PAGE 37ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Sprints, jumps, throws and distance athletes all require different training, but there are several general principles that guide the Bearcat coaches throughout the season. The first goal for every member of the team is that at the end of the season they are healthy and excited about competing. When this happens, athletes excel.
In the Willamette training model no one day is more important than another. What this means is that Bearcat coaches err on the side of caution. If an athlete is sick, injured or has been up all night finishing a paper, a hard work-out is probably not in the athlete’s best interest.
TRAINING PRINCIPLES TRAVEL AND COMPETITIONThe Bearcats rarely need to travel far from home. Numerous home meets and nearby competition against NCAA Division I, II, III and NAIA institutions make travel less intrusive on the athletes’ lives. This results in fewer missed classes and allows the athletes to sleep in the comfort of their own beds the night before a competition.
A Bearcat track athlete typically has one competition opportunity per week. Coaches set up athletes’ schedules to maximize their opportunuities. Many athletes only compete in one or two events per meet. This gives them the best chance of performing at their highest level. Maximizing opportunities results in maximizing success.

THE FIRST UNIVERSITY IN THE WESTWillamette’s curriculum and collaborative learning environment allow you to explore a wide variety of subjects that are critical to helping you navigate the world around you.
Whether working one-on-one with a professor, studying abroad, pursuing innovative research, interning with a business or nonprofit, or leading a campus organization, you can hone your creativity, global perspective and critical thinking for a lifetime of success.
Willamette professors contribute a wide range of expertise to create a dynamic and collaborative learning environment for their students. They engage in research and publication, and are fundamentally committed to teaching and serving as mentors and advisors.
Since 1990, ten Willamette faculty members have been named Oregon Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation. They have been honored among the most outstanding undergraduate instructors in the country for excelling in teaching and positively influencing the lives and careers of their students.
With an average class size of 14 and a student-to-faculty ratio of 10:1, Willamette provides a personal classroom experience where professors get to know you well, making it easy to find individualized help or ask questions.
The life of the Willamette student is active, thought-provoking and focused on community — in the classroom and out. More than 100

student organizations, in addition to numerous athletic, leadership and service opportunities, help you develop your character in addition to your intellect — and have fun, too.
Our students are engaged in communities locally and around the world. About 50% earn study abroad credit before they graduate, and 68% of students complete at least one internship while at Willamette.
Academics come first at Willamette, but you still have time to compete. Our athletes, both formal and informal, have an enthusiastic network of supporters. Willamette’s NCAA Division III athletics program includes 10 men’s and 10 women’s sports and about 25% of students are DIII student-athletes.
Our alumni say their time at Willamette was life-changing, and they credit their education with providing them the expertise they needed for a successful career and life — whether they went on to a job, prestigious graduate program, national fellowship or public service.
Located in the heart of the Willamette Valley, the university is situated ideally to access all the benefits of the Pacific Northwest. Gorgeous forests, rivers, mountains and ocean beaches nearby. A relaxed and creative culture. Vibrant arts and music scenes. And, coffee shops on almost every block.
Willamette University is in the midst of downtown Salem, Oregon’s capital, a community that is large enough to provide plenty of entertainment, yet personal enough that you’ll usually run into someone you know.
When you want to enjoy some of Oregon’s attractions located outside Salem, it’s easy to find a university organized trip or an informal group of friends to join you — whether you plan to snowboard on Mount Hood, catch a concert in Portland or build a bonfire at the coast.

CHARLES BOWLES TRACKRECORDS OF NOTE
Charles Bowles Track has a storied history with some of the best track records in the Northwest, including records set by Olympians Marla Runyan, Ryan Bailey and Dyrol Burleson. Bowles Track hosts several Willamette home track meets each year, including the two-day Willamette Invitational. It has been the site for numerous high school and Junior Olympic meets. It will also play host to the 2013 NWC Championships. Engulfed by Bush Park and including a covered seating area, Bowles track is a great place to watch track and field. The track is scheduled to be resurfaced following the 2013 season
CHARLES BOWLES TRACK
Bush’s Pasture Park covers over 90 acres and surrounds the McCulloch Stadium and Charles Bowles Track complex. It is a public park and is highly utilized by the Willamette community and the citizens of Salem. A bark trail around the perimeter of the park, which is approximately 1.5 miles, is a great place for Willamette runners to complete an easy run or a full workout. Runners on the WU distance squad tally a majority of their miles in the park. They also spend time at Minto-Brown Island Park, located about two miles from the track. The 900-acre park doubles as a wildlife refuge. Many of its 20 miles of paths are paved, but you also can run on the soft surfaces of bark paths.

The nine private colleges and universities in Oregon and Washington that form the Northwest Conference are building a reputation as one of the top NCAA Division III leagues in the nation. The NWC is nationally competitive in a broad spectrum of sports.
Formed in 1926, the NWC is 87 years old and is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are Willamette, George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washington are Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Whitman and Whitworth.
NCAA Division III is where the true student-athlete studies and competes. The National Collegiate Athletic Association is the main governing body of collegiate sports, dividing levels of classification into three divisions. D3 institutions are largely regarded as leading academic institutions and do not offer athletic scholarships. Still, athletics in D3 is highly competitive. There are over 136,000 athletes at over 430 D3 colleges and universities and each one is studying to earn a valuable degree in preparation for the workplace while playing the sport that he or she loves.
For D3 athletes, sports have been an integral part of our lives since our youth. From elementary school through high school, sports have complemented our educational experience. And as college looms, we want to continue playing the sport we love while receiving an education from a first-rate college. A D3 school is that fit.
NORTHWEST CONFERENCE & THE NCAA
Charter members included Willamette, the College of Idaho, Linfield, Pacific and Puget Sound. Albany College was added in 1931, remained for seven years, and then returned in 1949 as Lewis & Clark College. Pacific Lutheran joined in 1965 and was followed by Whitworth in 1970. The College of Idaho withdrew from the conference in 1978.
Whitworth dropped out in 1984 and returned in 1988. Menlo joined in 2006 as a member in football only and dropped out in 2009.
The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges in 1984 to form the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the original Northwest Conference in 1998.
Also in 1998, all nine NWC members shifted affiliation from the NAIA to the NCAA. Members knew the move would foster equity, sportsmanship and a genuine concern for all student-athletes.

SPORTS MEDICINEThe Willamette University’s sports medicine program provides medical support to our varsity athletes The department consists of two components: service and education.
The service component includes up-to-date evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation and/or referral procedures in the event of an athlete becoming injured or ill.
The education component is designed for any student interested in athletic training or other medical fields to gain valuable experience working in a clinical situation.
Willamette has treatment centers at Sparks Center and McCulloch Stadium. These facilities are staffed by 3 full-time athletic trainers and several work study students. Students involved in the athletic training program gain valuable work experience by covering practices and games, as well as working in the treatment centers on a rotating schedule.
Our team physicians call Silverton Hospital their home and our physical therapy contractor is PT Northwest. From our three full-time athletic trainers to our doctors and physical therapists, Willamette athletes receive top notch medical care.
