65 All-Conference selections and four All-Americans.
Last year, the team finished the sea-

Pitching Coach
Third Season
Southern Nazarene ‘03
DeWayne Vaughn begins his third season as pitching
coach under head coach Mike Jeffcoat at Texas
Wesleyan University.
Vaughn brings an extensive knowledge of the game to
the Rams. A four-year letter winner at the University
of Oklahoma,Vaughn was signed by the New York Mets
in 1981. He remained in the Mets’ organization
through 1987, progressing to Triple-A. While playing in
the Dominican Republic in 1987,Vaughn signed as a free
agent with the Texas Rangers.
During spring training of 1988,Vaughn met Mike
Jeffcoat. Both pitchers were vying for spots in the
Rangers’ bullpen and both made the team. Vaughn
pitched one season for the Rangers before his career
ended due to injury. He made one comeback attempt
with the Baltimore Orioles in 1990, but did not return
to the Major Leagues.
Vaughn and Jeffcoat maintained a relationship after the
1988 season. “We believe in the same philosophy,”
Vaughn said,“to have these kids play the game right,
enjoy playing the game, and get a good education.”
Vaughn is an active member of the Major League
Baseball Players Alumni Association, as well as the Texas
Rangers Alumni Association. He has had previous
coaching experience with his Oklahoma Prospects
select team from 2005-2010. He also served as the
University of Oklahoma Baseball color commentator
from 2005-2010.
Vaughn completed his degree in business communica-
tions at Southern Nazarene University in 2003. He and
his wife, Kimberly, have one son, Derek, and one daugh-
ter,Victoria. Vaughn resides in Arlington and maintains a
home in Oklahoma City.
VaughnDeWayne
Jeffcoat Continued...
In his second season (2003), he led the Rams to their
best record (38-22-1) since the 1995 season when they
won 39 games. That team produced two 1st-team All-
Conference players in freshmen Shea Harrison and Matt
Putman, and a Relief Pitcher of the Year selection, Seth
Manning. The team had a 14-game winning streak and
knocked off 2nd ranked Oklahoma City.
Jeffcoat was born and raised in Pine Bluff,AR, where he
excelled as a high school pitcher. He attended Louisiana
Tech University on a baseball scholarship, but left before
his senior year to sign a professional contract with the
Cleveland Indians. He would later complete his degree
in physical education in 1986. On August 21, 1983,
Jeffcoat made his major league debut against the Seattle
Mariners, and on September 18th, he out dueled the
Yankees' Dave Righetti for his first major league victory.
In May of 1985, Jeffcoat was traded to the San Francisco
Giants, where he remained until becoming a free agent
at the end of the 1986 season. He then signed with the
Texas Rangers and spent the next six years in Arlington.
In 1989, Mike had arguably the best year of his career,
posting a 9-6 record in 22 starts, with a 2-to-1 K/BB
ratio and a 3.58 ERA. On August 2, 1991, Mike doubled
home a run in the 9th inning of a 15-1 victory over the
Milwaukee Brewers, making him the first American
League pitcher since the inception of the designated hit-
ter rule in 1973 to record an RBI in a regular season
game. He also became the first American League pitch-
er to record a hit since the Rangers' Ferguson Jenkins
did so in 1974.
Although Jeffcoat finished his career with the Florida
Marlins in 1994, he has continued to make his home in
the Metroplex. He and his wife Elaine live in Arlington
with their children Drew, Haley, Ryan, and Kaley.

2012 Review
2012 Review
RA M S PO S T YE T AN OT H E R 30-WI N SE A S O NIn 2012, the Texas Wesleyan baseball team soared to
their eighth consecutive, 30-plus win season after fin-
ishing the year with a 33-21 overall record and a third
place finish in the Red River Conference Standings.
STANLEY NAMED PRESEASON ALL AMERICAN
Two months before the 2012 season was set to start,
the NAIA released the 2012 Preseason Baseball All-
America Team, and junior RHP Patrick Stanley was
selected on the prestigious list. As a closer during his
sophomore season, Stanley led the RRAC and was fifth
nationally with 13 saves, which was just one save short
of tying former Ram and All-American selection
Hayden Lackey’s single season record set in 2007.
RAMS SPARK OFF TO A 5-0 SEASON START
The Rams started the 2012 campaign on a five-game
winning streak beginning with a 1-0 opening day win
over Southwestern University. The Rams went on to
take two games from Hillsdale Free Will Baptist
College before coming away with a 3-2 walk-off win
against No. 4 nationally ranked Lubbock Christian
University. After the win over the Chaps, the Rams
cruised past Mary Hardin-Baylor in a dominating 13-0
win in the Crusaders’ first ever night game at Muriff
Field.
RAMS OPEN CONFERENCE WITH VICTORY
The Rams opened conference play with a 9-4 victory
over the University of the Southwest in early February.
The Rams went on to finish 16-10 in conference
action and third place in the RRAC Standings. It
marked the sixth-straight year Texas Wesleyan finished
in the top three of the conference standings.
THREE RAMS RECEIVE RRAC POW HONORS
Three Rams received the Red River Athletic
Conference Player of the Week award in 2012. Alex
Padilla picked up the first award of the season for the
Rams in February, while Justin Barnes and Joel Horton
took home the honor in the month of April.
SIX RAMS NAMED ALL-CONFERENCE
Six Rams were selected to the 2012 Red River Athletic
Conference Baseball All-Conference Team. Derek
Vaughn and Patrick Stanley made the first team for the
second-consecutive year. Vaughn put together a per-
fect 5-0 record with a 2.88 ERA, while striking out 59
hitters in 56 innings of work. Stanley, who led the team
in saves for the second year in a row with nine for the
season, notched up a 2.68 ERA in 25 appearances.
Nolan Barbee joined Stanley and Vaughn on the first
team after he went 7-3 with a 2.54 ERA in 28 games
played in his junior season with the Rams.
Alex Padilla was also a first team selection after his
first season as a junior catcher for the Rams. Padilla,
who started all 51 games for Texas Wesleyan in 2012,
led the team with a .353 BA with 59 hits, 17 runs,
eight doubles, two triples, and 13 RBI.
Justin Barnes made the second team after leading the
team in homeruns with seven. Barnes led the team in
RBI (43) and was ranked second on the team with a
.322 batting average. Barnes also was an All-Glove
selection along with Jake Howeth. Barnes only com-
mitted six errors at first base on the year with over
350 chances. Howeth just had one error in the outfield
in 83 chances.
Dillon Wilson was also a second team selection after
going 6-2 with a 2.91 ERA and leading the team in
strikeouts with 79 in 65 innings.
BAFIDIS SELECTED BY NATIONALS
Redshirt junior Corey Bafidis was drafted in June by
the Washington Nationals in the 35th round of Major
League Baseball’s 2012 First-Year Player Draft. Bafidies
redshirted his junior season at Texas Wesleyan after
playing his freshman year at Midland College and a
sophomore stint at Texas Tech University. The selection
marked the 38th Ram to be taken in the Major League
Baseball Draft. Derek Vaughn was selected by the Tamp
Bay Rays in the 47th round in the previous year.

Historic LaGrave Field is not only the home of the American
Association’s Fort Worth Cats, but it has also been the Texas Wesleyan
baseball team’s home field for the last five seasons. One of the top facilities
to host collegiate baseball in the country, the stadium has a history
unmatched by any ballpark in Texas.
LaGrave Field has hosted baseball in two eras, 1926-1964 and 2002-
present. In 2002, the modern LaGrave Field was built on the site of the old
ballpark. In fact, home plate sits exactly where it did in 1926 when the orig-
inal facility opened.
Numerous Hall of Famers have played at LaGrave Field. The very
dugouts where the likes of Hank
Aaron, Rogers Hornsby, Babe
Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio,
Jackie Robinson, and Ted
Williams once sat still stand
next to the modern dugouts
used by the Rams today.
With a gorgeous view of
downtown Fort Worth beyond
the right field fence and the
Trinity River Trail beyond the left field fence LaGrave field is an excel-
lent site to enjoy a game. The Stadium is a perfect blend of past and
present with a state of the art sound system and video board as well
as an old fashioned manual scoreboard.
LaGrave Field has a capacity of 5,000. The dimensions of the field
are 325-feet in left field, 400-feet in centerfield, and 335-feet in right
field.
Texas Wesleyan has registered a 165-59-1 (.737) record within
the friendly confines of LaGrave Field.
