Nick Roberts, a native of Knutsford,England, and a 1994 graduate ofMercyhurst College in Erie, Pa. hasbeen at the helm of the UrbanaUniversity men's program since the2008 season. Roberts has experienceplaying and coaching soccer at amultitude of levels.

"Coach Roberts provides a wealth ofexperiences in recruiting from ourarea, as well as a lifetime of soccerknowledge," said Urbana University

Director of Athletics Doug Young. "He has the type of exuberance for thegame and our program that our student-athletes need."

Roberts guided the program through tricky transitional period of changingfrom NAIA to NCAA Division II. Over that time, the program developed oneof the toughest schedules in the region at the D-II level. In 2012, the BlueKnights played 11 opponents that spent time ranked in the national Top 25.Robert posted a much-improved and credible 10-7-1 record against oneof the toughest slates in the country. It was the first winning season for theBlue Knights since 2006. In addition, the team won the inaugural GreatMidwest Athletic Conference Championship, the first conference title in theprogram's history. For his efforts, Roberts was named the 2012 G-MACCoach of the Year. (The 2012 team is pictured below after winning the G-MAC Championship 2-1 on a golden goal in OT.)

In 2011, the Blue Knights secured the program's biggest win, a 1-0 decisionover undefeated and 5th ranked Mercyhurst. The Blue Knights' success againsttop ranked teams continued in 2012 when the team defeated #23 Davisand Elkins and tied #22 Slippery Rock University. Junior forward TylerWason was named to the 2012 NCAA D-II All-Region Team, becoming thesecond player under Roberts to earn this distinction after Stuart Brownachieved All-Region honors in 2010.

In addition to the improvement on the field, the team has improved each ofthe past five seasons under Roberts off the field and in the classroom. TheBlue Knights have maintained a cumulative team GPA above 3.0 for much ofRoberts' tenure at the University.

"My expectations are that, first, the players will be excellent students andgood people," explains Roberts. "Secondly, they will work diligently inbecoming the best players they can on the soccer field, representing theteam and Urbana University well. It's hard work, and we take training andplaying seriously.”

Roberts added, “The same applies to our academics. We seek to competeon a national level in soccer, and that is connected to academics. Earning adegree will increase opportunities, quality of life, and the quality of peopleour student-athletes will come into contact with."

Roberts came to Urbana from Wittenberg University, where he was anassistant coach for the men's soccer program from 2006-2008. During the2007 season, the Tigers were consistently ranked in the top 25 in the nationin NCAA D-III.

He has been actively involved with coaching youth, ODP and club teams inOhio and California since 1994. From 2002-2006, Roberts was the directorof coaching and player development for Santa Rosa United, a 40-teamyouth soccer club in Santa Rosa, California. SRU won two national titles underthe direction of Roberts, a feat the organization had never accomplishedbefore. He also served on the Santa Rosa board of directors, and the SonomaSoccer Complex board of directors, which was the driving force in raising$1.5 million to build a new soccer complex for Santa Rosa United. He continuesto coach in the youth arena in Columbus with the Classic Eagles Soccer Club.His U-17 boys' team won the State Championship in May of 2012.

Roberts has also coached at the highest level of soccer, serving a four-yearappointment (1997-2001) as an assistant coach and head scout for TheColumbus Crew of Major League Soccer (MLS). During his tenure, The Crewwas twice East Coast Conference finalists. They were also a finalist at theU.S. Open Cup.

From 1994-1997 Roberts was a player/head coach in the United SoccerLeagues (USL) for Columbus USL Professional team posting a 27-15-2 record.He was named to the USL National All-Star team as a coach in 1996.

He has an extensive playing background as well. He played at the youthand senior levels with Witton Albion FC, Winnington Park FC and KnutsfordTown in the Cheshire League, England.

In 1989 he was awarded an athletic scholarship to Mercyhurst College, anNCAA D-II institution. There, he was a four-year starter, earning all-conferencehonors.

After his collegiate career, Roberts played and coached professionally inthe United Soccer Leagues with Columbus USL from 1994-1997.

Roberts holds the United States Soccer Federation National 'A' License (2002),The English Football Association Preliminary License (1987) and the NationalSoccer Coaches of America Premier Coaching License (2009). He graduatedfrom Mercyhurst College with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Marketing in1994.

Coach Roberts currently resides in Columbus with his wife Kori, sons, Sebastian(5) and Zavier (3), and a daughter, Annalia Jane, who was born in Octoberof 2012.

GRADUATE ASSISTANT MIKE BAMBEREmail: [email protected] Bamber joined Head Coach Nick Roberts' coaching staff before the 2013 season.Bamber is a F.A. Level 2 qualified coach from Manchester, England. He has coached teamsfrom all over the United States and England. Bamber also played at a high level overseas,including a stop at Sheffield United.

While coaching the Blue Knights, Bamber is also working towards his Master's in BusinessAdministration at Urbana University.

The Blue Knight athletic teams com-pete against NCAA D-I, D-II, D-III and NAIA programs from across the country in 15 inter-collegiate sports including: football, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’sbasketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s cross country,and men’s and women’s swimming. Women’s lacrosse became the 15th intercollegiate teamduring the 2010-11 school year, and men’s and women’s bowling club teams were added in2009. A variety of activities are also offered for student enrichment including: theater, con-certs, pep and marching bands, choir, movies, parties, guest speakers, comedians, flag foot-ball, intramural basketball, skiing, student newspaper, sand volleyball, indoor pool, studentgovernment and nearby outdoor adventure activities (canoeing, rafting, hiking, camping, etc.).

URBANA UNIVERSITY ACADEMICDEGREE PROGRAMS

The 27,000-square-feet Student Center is one ofUrbana University’s newest on-campus facilities.Features include the Bundy Wellness Center, lounge,conference and meeting rooms, snack bar, and abookstore. Wireless computer service is availablethroughout the facility.

In 2003, a major renovation project wascompleted at Barclay Hall and adjacentBailey Hall. The two buildings, whichhouse classrooms, are now connectedby an atrium and a secondary walkway.

Urbana University is dedicated to providing superb residencehall facilities to its students. McConnell Hall (above) wascompleted in the summer of 2007, and Sycamore ResidenceHall (left) was completed in 2004.

ABOUT URBANA UNIVERSITY

The Warren G. Grimes Center (left) has been a mainstayon Urbana University’s campus for decades. Locatedon the south end of campus, the Grimes Center housesthe gymnasium, swimming pool, racquetball courts, anew state-of-the-art free weight room, along with all ofthe athletic staff offices and additional classrooms. Asand volleyball court is located behind the Grimes Center.The facility is a hub for almost all student-athlete activityon campus. Student-athletes can be found in Grimeslifting weights, shooting hoops, working out or talkingwith coaches at all hours of the day.
