Dear Parents,

Wakefield’s summer program has been developed to reinforce the school’s focus on excellence in education, enrichment in the arts and sciences, and development of each child’s self-worth and compassion for others. The program’s goals are promoting the growth and development of each child’s mind and body, as well as providing an outlet for recreation and fun over the summer months.

Located on Old Tavern Road—just north of U.S. Route 66 (exit #31), on the outskirts of The Plains, Virginia— Wakefield’s beautiful 64-acre campus offers a wide range of facilities and services. It enables us to offer a broad and varied range of activities that will give each child a chance to develop his or her character and abilities, as well as enjoy a wonderful summer vacation.

Whether the interests are academic, artistic, or athletic,we have programs to enrich each child’s creativity and skills

in an atmosphere of excellence and fun.

Many of Wakefield School’s Summer Programs are created and run by our own faculty and staff. Our counselors are committed to providing your child with a safe, positive environment.

We are excited about the wide range of programs we have to offer you this summer. Please keep in mind that openings are limited. Be sure to mail your completed registration package (emergency form, full payment [or online receipt], paper course selection form [or online receipt], and any additional required documentation) right away.

Care Before & After CampBefore-Camp Care:

Time: 8:00 - 9:00 am Cost: $40/week

After-Camp Care:

Time: 1:00 - 3:00 pm Cost: $80/weekTime: 1:00 - 5:00 pm Cost: $160/weekTime: 3:00 - 5:00 pm Cost: $80/week

Before- and after-camp care provides an opportunity for campers to extend their day of fun and adventure. Fun activities and snack will be provided. This program is for children age 6 and up. Hours are from 8:00 – 9:00 am, 1:00 – 3:00 pm, 1:00 – 5:00 pm, and 3:00 – 5:00 pm. This is not a drop-in service. Please sign up along with your camp.

For all programs running from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, campers must bring a lunch, snack, and drink.

For the full-day programs, 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, campers must bring lunch, two snacks, and two drinks.

Water will be provided throughout the day for all activities. Campers will be encouraged to drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration.

All participants should wear sunscreen. Campers attending full day programs should bring extra to re-apply for afternoon activities.

Please note: There will NOT be a nurse on campus during Summer Camp.

Summer School 2013This summer, area students in grades 8 and above will have the opportunity to take Wakefield academic courses for credit. Offerings will be available

in Math, Spanish, History, and English (enrollment permitting). This is a wonderful opportunity

to build skills and master academic content during the summer.

Each course runs June 17th - July 19th (no classes on July 4th)

3D Lego Design/Junior Video Game Design— 1st to 3rd Grade C3 Cyber Club June 24th – 28th 9:00 am – 1:00 pm $260.00The campers will spend two days working with 3D Design and three days with Jr. Video Game Design 3D Lego Design With our technology-driven world it’s important to prepare our children for their future. We take the fun concept of traditional Legos and combine it with the digital world of 3D modeling. Students will interact with real-life Legos, then recreate them digitally in the computer. They will learn to create 3D characters, environments, props, vehicles, and more. Students will explore the concepts of 3D modeling and later on move into the process of animation, through which they will be able to create their very own 2D animation. Children will learn and use basic computer skills, perspective, 3D modeling techniques, simple mathematics, and problem-solving skills. Build your child’s imagination one block at a time by enrolling him or her today! Junior Video Game Design Now available for ages 1st-3rd grade, this special class is specifically designed for young children to cultivate their interest in becoming game designers, multimedia artists, engineers, programmers, and more! Give your child the opportunity to see how professional games are made. Learn cutting-edge computer skills through the fun art of 3D Game Design using award winning “Platinum Arts Sandbox.” In this exciting class, children will use basic 3D modeling skills to create their very own video games. They will learn to customize game attributes and build their own virtual worlds from scratch. Students will acquire computer, mathematics, and basic problem-solving skills, and creativity, too. These classes are not taught anywhere in the public school system, so sign up today and watch as your child’s imagination comes life!

All the Amazing Animals, Ages 4 and 5 Sarah Pemberton July 8th – 12th 9:00 am – 1:00 pm $185.00This animal-themed camp will introduce campers to two new animals every day. Campers will hear animal stories and learn fun facts about the animals as well. A different craft will be done every day as well. Perfect for the animal lover in your house!


American Girl, Ages 6 to 13 Judy Bohardt June 24th – 28th 9:00 am – 3:00 pm $245.00Girls, bring your American Girl Dolls and look forward to a fun-filled week. Afternoon tea will be served each day. Crafts will be based on Kit’s time period. (You do not have to have an American Girl doll to participate.)

Art and Architecture, Ages 6 to 13 Wendy Pierce Two Sessions: June 24th – 28th July 8th – 12th 9:00 am – 3:00 pm $230.00Calling future designers, architects, and artists! This is a world of spinning skyscrapers and living roofs! Come explore basics of architecture and design through games, drawing and perspective, painting, trading cards, building, and more! We will create structures and models, including a geodesic dome.

Art Around the World, Ages 6 to 10 Marie Feil July 8th – 12th 9:00 am – 3:00 pm $225.00Discover the wonders of art from around the world. Travel the globe and understand the many different cultures and the art around us. Campers will paint, draw, and use many different mediums. Learn about suminagashi and gyotaku. Enjoy painting cave drawings like those from Lascaux. Learn about the art of Khokhloma, Pysanky eggs, and Guatamalan worry dolls. Learn a little art history and gain knowledge you will have forever. Campers will enjoy a variety of projects all week long.

Arts and Crafts Galore, Ages 4 and 5 Sarah Pemberton June 24th – 28th 9:00 am – 1:00 pm $185.00Come join us as we create masterpiece after masterpiece. All will enjoy making craft projects, tie-dying, sculpting, and exploring all different mediums of art. Students will go home with a portfolio of their very own filled with tons of projects.

Baking Extravaganza, Ages 11 and up Doreen and Kourtnee Lewis Two Sessions: June 17th – 21st June 24th – 28th 9:00 am – 3:00 pm $260.00 Come explore the world of baking! We will spend the week baking all sorts of delicious treats, while learning some important baking techniques along the way. Some of the projects may include, but are not limited to, cake pops, lemon cream cheese, pound cake, cookies, muffins, and much more! The campers will make everything from scratch and will be able to bring their creations home at the end of each day for their families to enjoy.

Become a Published Author, Ages 8 to 13 Christina Winn Two sessions: June 24th – 28th July 15th – 19th 9:00 am – 1:00 pm $240.00In this fun class you will learn to do everything needed to write your own book and sell it. The class will begin by developing their ideas, then drafting, writing, and editing their stories. Campers will then illustrate their books with drawings, photographs, or a combination of both. The class will design their own book covers and write their own author biographies.

Z Idea Factory will pull together each camper’s print story and illustrations into a beautifully designed book of that child’s work, to be professionally printed in a letter-size, case-bound book. All of the authors will create marketing materials to advertise and sell their own books to family and friends. The last class will end with a book signing party for our new authors! Each camper receives one copy of his or her printed story.


Bowling Camp, Age 8 to 13 Kirk Torrence July 15th – 19th 9:00 am – 3:00 pm $300.00Each camper will learn the fundamental skills of bowling. A league will be formed at the beginning of the week, and on the last day of camp, a tournament will be played, with a winner crowned in each division. Awards will be given to the top individual bowler, most improved bowler, and the two tournament champions. The cost of the games and shoes is included.

Challenger British Soccer Camp, Ages 8 to 13Challenger Sports Academy Two sessions: June 17th – 21st July 8th – 12th 9:00 am – 3:00 pm $200.00Professional British soccer coaches provide a great camp experience, lending their knowledge and expertise to campers on skill development, tactical awareness, and above all else, fun! Campers are immersed into the world of the beautiful game through fun activities, challenging drills, and a daily World Cup competition. Every camper will receive a soccer ball and camp t-shirt, personalized evaluation from their coach, and a poster. (Enhance the camp experience by hosting a British soccer coach and receive an $80 rebate! Create a Cookie and Cake Business, Ages 10 and up Shellie Lee June 24th – 28th 9:00 am – 3:00 pm $260.00What is an entrepreneur? “Entrepreneurs are simply those who understand that there is little difference between obstacle and opportunity and are able to turn both to their advantage.” Let’s take a week to explore starting a teen business (which we will name ourselves) utilizing fun and tasty products. Not only will we have a great time producing our own products—we will also find creative means to market and sell them according to the business plans we will create. We will explore business basics, making use of games, exploring real-life business cases, and learning how to budget and create profit.

Fishing and Fun, Ages 8 to 13 Gordon Lawrence June 24th – 28th 9:00 am – 3:00 pm $300.00Fishing and Fun camp will explore some of the best fishing spots in Fauquier and the surrounding area. We’ll fish in a different location each day and learn basic techniques that maximize our chances to catch fish! Please bring your fishing pole and tackle and be ready to FISH. Cost includes transportation, bait, and park fees.

Field Hockey Skills Camp, Ages 8 and up Julianne Clifford Two Sessions: June 17th – 21st July 15th – 19th 9:00 am – 3:00 pm $275.00Field hockey is a fast, fun, and exciting game, and a great way to get exercise and challenge oneself to try new things and make new friends. In this camp we will learn introductory stick and teamwork skills essential to field hockey. Join Coach Clifford and volunteer Middle School and Varsity players to learn and develop basic skills and game strategies. We will work outside in the mornings and play indoor hockey in the afternoons to escape the heat! Snacks will be provided, but do bring a lunch and water bottle! Campers will need to bring a field hockey stick, shin guards, sneakers, mouth guard, and protective eye wear; cleats for outdoor play are optional.

FPS Level Design Using “Unreal,” Ages 8 and up C3 Cyber Club July 15th – 19th 9:00 am – 1:00 pm $250.00Aspiring game designers will love this class utilizing Unreal Editor, used for such games as Unreal Tournament III and Gears of War, to design 3D levels. Students will learn to create interior/exterior environments, apply different procedures of modeling, and apply textures. Learn how to import pre-set 3D models, control dynamic lighting, and add scripts to your own customized Unreal Tournament Level. The software utilized is Rated M for mature; we make every effort to limit and filter content to make it appropriate for ages 8 to 14.

Fun with Printing and Stamping, Ages 8 and up Pat Tucker July 1st – 5th (4 days) 9:00 am – 1:00 pm $150.00Explore the exciting world of printing, and stamping with both traditional and nontraditional materials and tools. What you can make with your toes and fingers? Experience the ancient Japa-nese art form of gyotaku fish prints on rice paper. Make your own stamps, and try your hand at printing on fabric. Discover your own amazing creativity while enjoying new experiences.


Girls Just Want to Have Fun, Ages 7 to 11 Mert Cook July 15th – 19th 9:00 am – 3:00 pm $250.00“Tween Girls Unite! Inspire, Create, and Have Fun!” That is our motto. This camp will be packed full of modern girl fun. We will spend the week creating various art and craft projects that will inspire and promote positive self-esteem. We will play team-building games, sing fun songs, and make memories to last a lifetime. All the activities will be new and exciting, from creating gratitude journals to learning all kinds of unique ways of tie-dying. Campers will also have the opportunity to learn crafts from around the world that other girls their age are doing. Each girl in this camp will have a feeling of importance and be inspired to be the best girl she can be. On the final day the girls will celebrate by having a day-time slumber party that they will be able to help plan and create. Don’t miss out on all the fun!

Hogwarts Summer Fun, Ages 4 to 10 Shellie Lee July 15th – 19th 9:00 am – 3:00 pm $265.00Although Hogwarts was last seen in disarray, we will bring it back to life, filling it with many a witch’s and wizard’s dream. From poly-juice to quidditch, magic will appear from all around. We will seek out the wisdom from the sorting hat, create a bountiful feast to fill the dining hall, enjoy the company of dragons, and explore the forbidden forest. We will also, of course, have to find our perfect wands and explore Diagon Alley.

Hoops 101, Ages 6 and up Kirk Torrence July 1st – 5th (4 days) 9:00 am – 3:00 pm $190.00Hoops 101 provides a solid foundation of individual skills and team concepts, and an environment in which their implementation is consistently reinforced.

Into the Wild: Art and Nature Explored, Ages 8 to 13 Teresa Duke and Jen Sipes June 24th – 28th 9:00 am – 3:00 pm $300.00From serious mountaintops, to rivers and streams, and on to the places where the sidewalks end, each day at camp will be a journey planned with an eye towards surprise and discovery. Imagine combining all that is beautiful and inspiring from our natural and national heritage with sculpture, watercolor, drawing, journal reflections, and video diary. Be prepared to use your feet, your hands, your thoughts, and your talents in what should be a memorable week of experiences. Some of the wild places we’ll be exploring are Old Rag Mountain, White Oak Canyon, and the Shenandoah River, among others. Campers will need to bring a lunch and water daily. Dress to get wet!


Lego Robotics, Ages 8 and up C3 Cyber Club July 22nd – 26th 9:00 am – 1:00 pm $250.00Powered by the LEGO MINDSTORMS Education NXT Base Set and Software, our Lego Robotics class uses the exciting world of Legos to teach you to manipulate and program your own personal robot. Learn how to use the easy but powerful software to create commands with drag-and-drop programming. Configure different sensors that track motion, light, and touch to create the ultimate robot! Students will work together as a team of young engineers to create and program their robot using our provided laptops.

Mad Scientists, Ages 8 and up Shalika Santiago July 8th – 12th 9:00 am – 3:00 pm $230.00Mad Scientists is the camp where you will think, get messy, and have fun! We will engage in various science experiments and demonstrations throughout the day. Come join the madness.

Monster Camp, Ages 4 and 5 Judith Fossett July 1st – 5th (4 days) 9:00 am – 1:00 pm $175.00At Monster Camp we will be learning about friendly pretend monsters. Our week will include monster crafts, monster stories, and the Monster Mash.

Nature Camp, Ages 7 to 12 Bull Run Mountain Conservancy July 15th – 19th 9:00 am – 3:00 pm $260.00Spend a nature-filled week interacting with the natural world. Each day we will focus on different animals and plants that make their home in the Bull Run Mountains. Campers will add to their understanding of nature through a combination of hikes, stream walks, animal handling, games, and eco-drams. Campers will meet at Wakefield at 9:00 am, ride the bus to BRMC Mountain House, and return to Wakefield School at 3:00 pm.

Paintball Camp, Ages 11 and up Kirk Torrence June 17th – 21st 9:00 am – 3:00 pm $375.00We will spend four days at Skyline Paintball in Strasburg, which is approximately 30 minutes from Wakefield. The first day will be spent at Wakefield School going over important rules and safety information, what the sport looks like, types of games, and the schedule for the week. Our time on the field at Skyline will include small group instruction to improve skill through live game-time action. Included in the cost will be basic equipment: mask, ½ case of paint each day, gun, and lunch for the four days we are at Skyline.

Paper Creations, Ages 7 to 10 Stephanie Foerster Two Sessions: June 17th – 21st June 24th – 28th 9:00 am – 3:00 pm $175.00Artists around the world have worked with paper because it is pliable and diverse in its uses. For centuries, we have painted, printed, drawn, scratched, folded, glued and curled it using processes created by many different cultures. Paper is a common material which can be used to make amazingly uncommon creations. Our young artists will have a great time using their imaginations and their puzzling skills to produce beautiful works of art using the techniques of papier-mâché, origami, kirigami, pop-up pages, and book construction. The children will expand their artistic experiences by working in and building with this wonderful medium.


Pastry Decorating, Ages 8 and up Margaret Mason July 8th – 12th 9:00 am – 1:00 pm $175.00Learn the secrets to creating beautiful cakes, cupcakes, cookies, and more! Learn what it takes to make your own edible works of art. Requirements for this camp are to have an eagerness to learn and an imagination! Campers will learn the basic techniques of decorating, including fun techniques like icing flowers and candy animals. Campers will be asked to bring in various goodies to be decorated.

Pigment + Water = Fun, Ages 8 to 13 Pat Tucker June 17th – 21st 9:00 am – 3:00 pm $235.00Explore the numerous and exciting possibilities of working with paint while creating a variety of art. During the week we will work with watercolors and acrylics and an assortment of different surfaces including paper, canvas, and other materials. Discover what happens when you put salt on water color and other nifty techniques. Be inspired by Van Gogh, Picasso, the Impressionists, and other painters. Most importantly, discover your own amazing creativity.

Princess Camp, Ages 4 and 5 Judith Fossett July 8th – 12th 9:00 am – 1:00 pm $185.00Sugar, spice, and all things nice. At Princess Camp we will make crowns, wands, fans, jewelry, and more. We will read princess books and learn about manners. To end the week we will have a lovely tea party.

Princesses and Pirates, Ages 4 to 6 Sarah Pemberton June 17th – 21st 9:00 am – 1:00 pm $175.00Come have a ball at Princesses and Pirates! We will read fairy tales and do all sorts of pirate and princess crafts. On our last day we will have a tea party fit for royalty!

Ready, Set…Bounce, Ages 4 to 8 Dresden Farmer and Heidi Hopkins Three Sessions: July 8th – 12th July 15th – 19th July 22nd – 26th 9:00 am – 1:00 pm $225.00Ready, Set… Bounce is a MOONBOUNCE camp that will be an out-of-this-world experience. Four commercial-grade Moonbounces will keep your child jumping for joy as we hop through our day of obstacle courses, games, stories, and crafts.

Recycled Art, Ages 6 and up Wendy Pierce Two sessions: July 15th – 19th July 22nd – 26th 9:00 am – 3:00 pm $225.00Trash to art treasure! We will take a look at what artists and designers are doing with refuse, and create our own books, jewelry, sculpture for indoors and out, birdhouses, and assemblages.

Robotics, Ages 11 and up Shellie Lee June 17th – 21st 9:00 am – 3:00 pm $275.00Campers will create programmable Lego Mindstorm NTX Robots that navigate obstacles, follow trails, and compete in our Robot Games. No programming experience is necessary. Campers will work in teams using graphical programming software. Those ready for the challenge will be introduced to a C-like programming language for the Mindstorm. A limited number of campers so sign up early!


RPG Game Design, Ages 8 and up C3 Cyber Club July 1st – 5th (4 days) 9:00 am – 1:00 pm $190.00 In this class students will utilize Platinum Arts Sandbox to develop a “Role Player Game” or RPG similar to popular games like Minecraft. Students will develop a simple story and create a quest that will immerse the player deeper into the game. Children will learn to sculpt and texturize their environment using 3D modeling tools. As they progress they will dive into the code of their game, learning how to alter their script and fully customize character properties. Students will be able to cast spells on enemies, defeat the boss, and save the princess! By the last class students will have a fully functional level and will receive a link to download the software and student levels. This class is great for new or returning students as the material is different from our other Game Design classes.

Splish Splash, Ages 8 to 13 Shalika Santiago July 1st – 5th (4 days) 9:00 am – 3:00 pm $225.00Do you like to swim, zip down water slides, and have tons of fun in the sun? If you said “yes” to any of these questions, Splish-Splash is the camp for you! From 11:00 am – 2:30 pm, we will enjoy Atlantis Waterpark at Bull Run Park. Since Atlantis does not open until 11:00 am, we will engage in a variety of group activities from 9:00 to 10:30. Let’s have a blast!

Three-Dimensional Creative Explosion, Ages 8 to 13 Pat Tucker June 24th – 28th 9:00 am – 3:00 pm $210.00Do you like to construct things? Then this is the perfect creative opportunity for you as we will explore the exciting world of creating in the round. You will have the opportunity to work with a wide variety of materials to express yourself, including natural materials, wire, plaster, wood, paper, papier-mâché, cardboard, clay, etc. Most importantly, discover the fun and creativity of making your ideas come off the paper.

Trilogy Lacrosse Camp Andrew Sellers June 24th – 28th Option 1: 1st – 4th grades 9:00 am – 12:00 pm $225.00 Option 2: 5th – 8th grades 9:00 am – 3:00 pm $325.00The goal of the Trilogy Lacrosse Day Camp is to ensure every player walks away with a firm understanding of lacrosse’s fundamental macro and micro concepts. With this goal in mind, each day is broken down and organized into manageable skill units that follow our individual-group-team dynamic. Highlights include excellent coach-to-camper ratio, age- and grade-specific training groups, and specialized positional training for attack, midfielders, defense, face-offs, and goalies (specific coach for goalies).

Triple Threat Basketball Camp, Ages 6 and up Coach Paul Sipes Two Sessions: June 24th – 28th July 8th – 12th 9:00 am – 3:00 pm $200.00The focus of the camp is to provide a solid foundation of individual skills and team concepts, and an environment in which their implementation is consistently reinforced. The balance of stations work, daily contests, and games allows campers to maximize the benefit of attending a sport-specific camp while having a great time. Features include individual instruction daily, cumulative weekly contests, introduction to strength and conditioning techniques, air conditioned gyms, outstanding camper-to-coach ratio, and guest speakers, including current and former college players.


Unicorns and Dragons, Ages 4 to 7 Shellie Lee July 22nd – 26th 9:00 am – 3:00 pm $265.00Enjoy a fun week of imagination, filled with adventures of castles and forests where dragons and unicorns reign. There will be water fun outside to keep us cool, and crafts and games to keep us busy within our castle walls. We will create our own unicorns and dragons, filling our castle with them. We will search for the hidden treasures that the dragons guard. We need your fanciful knights to bring the dragon in tow or your courageous princesses to tame the unicorn into telling her secrets. We will play in the castle made like the clouds and make plenty of treats to keep our unicorns and dragons perfectly content.

Video Game Design, Ages 8 and up C3 Cyber Club June 17th – 21st 9:00 am – 1:00 pm $250.00This class is designed for young children to cultivate their interest in becoming game designers, multimedia artists, engineers, programmers, and more! Give your child the opportunity to see how professional games are made. Learn cutting-edge computer skills through the fun art of 3D Game Design using award winning “Platinum Arts Sandbox.” In this exciting class, children will use basic 3D modeling skills to create their very own video games. They will learn to customize game attributes and build their own virtual worlds from scratch. Students will acquire computer, mathematics, and basic problem-solving skills, and creativity, too. These classes are not taught anywhere in the public school system, so sign up today and watch as your child’s imagination comes to life!

Video Game Modding, Ages 8 and up C3 Cyber Club July 8th – 12th 9:00 am – 1:00 pm $250.00 Dive into the world of game modding, where students will learn to customize, alter, and reconfigure popular games such as The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim or Oblivion using the award-winning game editor. Create your very own environment by learning 3D modeling techniques, importing 3D models, altering game properties/code, adjusting lighting, and more. This is the perfect class for avid game lovers and anyone interested in getting a behind-the-scenes look at how professional games are built.

Volleyball Skills Camp, Ages 9 and up Nancy Hutcheson and Lilly Withers July 15th – 19th 9:00 am – 1:00 pm $175.00This camp is designed for 4th through 8th grade students and will focus on all aspects of the game, beginning with the fundamentals. Daily drills and skill development are emphasized during on-court instruction in the following areas: serving, serve receiving, forearm passing, setting, attacking, team defense, blocking, team reception, attack coverage, and team transition. Advanced players will work on overhand serves as well as development with hitting, setting, passing, and defensive techniques for improved execution during game situations. Scrimmages will be played toward the end of the week if quantity of enrollment allows.

Wizards Math and Science, Ages 10 to 13 Shellie Lee July 8th – 12th 9:00 am – 1:00 pm $175.00Become a wizard of math and learn the fundamental concepts of algebra. Become familiar with its language through activities, games, and explorations. Campers learn to solve equations first through experience, then by the shortcut of pencil to paper, solidifying their understanding of the physical world by math. Also become the mad scientist with fun experiments designed to bring the sudden gasp or “Wow!” into their understanding of their physical world. The week will end with a Math Quest of treats and surprises to last the rest of the summer before the trek back into the classroom.

Wide World of Sports, Ages 6 to 12 Megen Evans June 17th – 21st 9:00 am – 3:00 pm $235.00We will be playing a new sport or two each day along with fun games. Sports include soccer, basketball, lacrosse, floor hockey, flag football, tennis, team handball, and softball.


Summer Program CounselorsJudy Bohardt has been a teacher at Wakefield School since 1992 and currently teaches first grade. She holds a B.A. in elementary education and an M.A. in clinical psychology, and especially enjoys reading and crafts.

C3 Cyber Club knows that technology is changing even more quickly than children are growing, and that’s why the club took its place as Loudoun’s only fun, interactive technology learning center back in 2001, dedicated to providing children with the technological tools they need in today’s fast-paced, competitive world.

Julianne Clifford is a longtime Wakefield parent and serves as Wakefield’s Middle School field hockey coach and Upper School science teacher. She played varsity field hockey through high school and second squad through college, where she also played women’s lacrosse for two years and was a member of the rowing club. Dr. Clifford’s coaching and teaching philosophy focuses on encouraging young athletes and students to challenge themselves by trying new things and working as a team: “I view the game of field hockey as an excellent opportunity to introduce our students to the abundant rewards of playing team sports. I strongly believe that an individual can gain tremendous benefits from being a part of a team effort where everyone is treated with respect and all are appreciated for their varied contributions to the group.”

Mert Cook studied early childhood education and art at Utah State University and Mount Vernon College, and has been teaching creative workshops and art to children for several years. She likes to give children an environment in which to be creative and let their imaginations soar! She also has four children of her own.

Challenger Sports is the leading provider of soccer camps in the United States and Canada, with over 3,000 communities across all 50 states hosting British soccer camps and clinics for over 130,000 players. This summer camp will feature the new “1,000 Touches Curriculum,” packed with new drills and practices designed to improve individual ball control, foot skills, fakes, and moves. Only the very best British coaches are selected by Challenger’s overseas staff, from over 2,000 potential candidates. They are all committed and talented coaches, but more importantly, they love children and understand how we teach new skills, build confidence, and have fun, all at the same time!

Teresa Duke has been teaching at Wakefield since 1997, serving originally as a 4th grade teacher and currently as a Lower School art teacher. She is also a professional artist specializing in portraiture, sporting art, and landscapes. Ms. Duke holds an M.F.A. from The George Washington University and a B.A. in Elementary Education from The College of Santa Fe.

Megen Evans teaches Lower School P.E. at Wakefield School. She is a 2008 graduate of West Chester University with a B.S. in Kinesiology. Megen is also the Varsity Girls’ Lacrosse coach at Wakefield; previously, she served as an assistant varsity coach for Ursuline Academy in Wilmington, DE, for two seasons, and still holds the position of the Assistant Director at Ursuline Academy Girls’ Lacrosse Camp and at West Deptford Lacrosse Camp, in New Jersey.

Dresden Farmer is a mother of one son. She worked at Little Graces Preschool for nine years. She loves to cook and spend time with her friends and family.

Marie Feil has been a Wakefield Camp instructor for many summers. She loves art, her boys, and teaching. She is currently a substitute teacher for K-5th grade. She also teaches art enrichment classes at several local schools.

Stephanie Foerster is the Lower School librarian and a Lower School art teacher at Wakefield.

Judith Fossett has been teaching preschoolers for more than twenty years. Their curiosity and excitement bring joy to her heart. She enjoys flower gardening and spending time with her family and friends.

Heidi Hopkins is the mother of four children and owner/operator of a Moonbounce rental company. She is currently working on earning her Bachelor’s degree in elementary education.

Nancy Hutcheson has worked as Wakefield School’s Arts Department Assistant since 2003. She started coaching Wakefield’s Middle School Volleyball team two years ago and was quickly hooked, and last year added the JV team as well. A mother of four, including two Wakefield alumnae, Nancy lives in Aldie and enjoys time with her children (especially when they play volleyball).

Gordon Lawrence is the Director of Security and Transportation at Wakefield School. He has run many Wakefield summer camps before, including the very popular Wide World of Sports. In his free time he enjoys spending time with family and friends.

Shellie Lee was a middle school math teacher before becoming a network engineer computer consultant. During the last 25 years, she has directed both day and residential summer camps for YMCA and Girl Scouts, providing well-rounded programs for kids of all ages.


Summer Program CounselorsDoreen Lewis is a longtime Wakefield parent. She has worked in the culinary industry for over 20 years. In her free time she enjoys cooking and spending time with her family and friends.

Kourtnee Lewis is a 2011 alumna of Wakefield School and is currently attending Emory and Henry College, where she is majoring in Business Management. Kourtnee will be a familiar face to many returning campers as she has worked many summer camps for the past four years.

Margaret Mason has a B.S. degree in environmental chemistry from S.U.N.Y. Environmental School of Science and Forestry at Syracuse University. She has eight years math and science teaching experience with students in 3rd through 8th grades.

Sarah Pemberton is a long-time Loudoun County resident, married and a stay-at-home mom to two beautiful children. She enjoys riding horses, being outside, and doing crafts with her kids.

Wendy Pierce is the mother of three Wakefield School alumni. She is a graduate of RISD (B.F.A., Sculpture) and GMU (M.A.T.), and is an art educator in Fairfax County schools.

Shalika Santiago has taught for seven years and is currently a first grade teacher at Swans Creek Elementary in Dumfries.. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Early and Elementary Education and a Master’s degree in Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment. She loves spending time with her family, cooking, baking, reading, and having fun in the summer sun!

Andrew Sellers, an instructor with Trilogy Lacrosse, graduated with a B.S. in Business Management and a minor in coaching from Salisbury University, where he played varsity lacrosse as both defense and LSM and made three appearances in the national championships. A two-time All American, he was named 2012 Defensive Player of the Year and left Salisbury with two national championships. A week after his senior season he was drafted into Major League Lacrosse by the Chesapeake Bayhawks, where he played the majority of the 2012 MLL season before being traded to the Rochester Rattlers. Andrew credits his dedication to training as one of the main reasons he obtained these accolades.

Jennifer Sipes is a licensed clinical social worker employed at Wakefield School as the Lower School Counselor. She has worked at Wakefield since 2006.

Paul Sipes is Wakefield School’s Athletic Director and coach of the Girls’ Varsity Basketball team. He led his team to the State Final Four in 2011 and 2012, firsts in the program’s history, and to the State Championship game in March, 2013. His girls also captured the Delaney Athletic Conference (DAC) Championship for 2013. Coach Sipes was named Coach of the Year for 2013 by the DAC, and in 2012 was named Independent School Athletic Administrator of the Year by the Virginia Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association.

Kirk Torrence studied secondary education while attending Western Michigan University and has coached basketball with kids for over eight years in recreational leagues, in the AAU, and as a personal trainer. He started his career with the Manassas Boys’ and Girls’ Club and went on to coach with Gainesville Basketball Association, Fairfax Stars Basketball (sponsored by Nike), Manassas Park Community Center, and most recently Wakefield School, where he coached JV and Middle School boys’ teams in 2013. His Fairfax Stars team placed in the top six in the nation at the AAU Nationals in 2010 and 2011, and Kirk was inducted into the Fairfax Stars Hall of Fame in 2011. His philosophy is … if there’s a little skill and much enthusiasm from the kids, we can learn to play a good game of basketball!

Pat Tucker has worked for Wakefield since 1984. She has an extensive background in teaching summer camp programs and has a special knack for bringing out the artist in all of her students.

Christina Winn is the owner/entrepreneur of Z Idea Factory, LLC, a custom design/publishing company. Its mission is to make writing stories as cool to kids as it is to be a music pop star! Z Idea Factory works with kids to be creative and use various elements of writing, art, and photography to create one-of-a-kind books made by kids, for kids. They sponsor story-writing contests and publish the winners’ books to be sold—and the authors receive book royalties!

Lilly Withers is a 2008 graduate of Wakefield School and recently graduated from Elon University with a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology. She is currently serving as Wakefield School’s Interim Assistant Director of Admission. One of her greatest passions is baking, and a year ago, she started her own small baking business, specializing in cupcakes and cake pops.

◆STEP 3: Select and pay for your camps! There are two ways to select and pay for your camps: online, or with the paper selection form on page 18. TO SELECT AND PAY FOR CAMPS ONLINE: • Go to www.wakefieldschool.org , click through Campus Life > Summer Offerings > Camp Selection Form, and fill in the electronic form. You must complete a separate online form for each child. • Pay online with a credit card (MasterCard, American Express, or Discover) for the total tuition due, and print a payment receipt. TO SELECT AND PAY FOR CAMPS VIA PAPER SELECTION FORM: • Print, tear out, or photocopy page 18 of the catalogue, “2013 Camp Selection Form,” and fill it in completely. You must complete a separate form for each child. • Either include credit card information for the total tuition due, or write a check payable to Wakefield School for the total tuition due.

◆STEP 4: Provide any additional documentation required! The State of Virginia makes the following additional requirements: • For any child not currently enrolled at Wakefield School: copies of immunization records and a complete physical. • For 4-year-olds not currently enrolled at Wakefield School: an original birth certificate. Birth certificates may be mailed to school along with other registration materials and will be promptly returned; however, we encourage you to bring your child’s birth certificate on the first day of camp so it can be copied and returned to you that day!

◆STEP 5: Stuff your envelope and mail it! Please double-check to be sure you are enclosing all required materials. Your child is not registered for any camp until the envelope of registration materials has been received, even if you have selected and paid for your camps online!

Cancellation and Refund Policy:Full payment includes a $50.00 non-refundable deposit for each program. To receive a refund for program fees minus the deposit, your cancellation must be received in writing at least fourteen (14) days prior to the start of each program. Cancellations made less than fourteen days prior to the start of each program are non-refundable.

Program Cancellation:In the event the Wakefield School Summer Program must cancel a program, you will be notified no later than one week prior to the start of the program and a full refund will be mailed to you.
