Just two days after an allegedlydistracted Philadelphia busdriver slammed into a SoldiersField Road overpass, resultingin 35 tourist injuries, activistsand state officials hosted atimely discussion on distracteddriving yesterday at the StateHouse.

“Distracted driving is achoice — a selfish choice,” saidJoel Feldman, a local attorneywho lost his 21-year-old daugh-ter Casey to a distracted driverin 2009.

Yesterday he helped kick offthe The Massachusetts Acade-my of Trial Attorneys’ participa-tion in End Distracted Driving,a national campaign that edu-cates teenagers about the dan-gers of driving while distracted.

As part of yesterday’s event,Gov. Deval Patrick declared Feb.4 as Distracted Driving Daywith the hope that Massachu-setts residents will pay atten-tion while behind the wheel.

Also yesterday, the investiga-tion into Saturday’s tour buscrash continued.

Massachusetts State Policesaid yesterday that a 17-year-oldmale was in critical conditiondue to Saturday’s crash. Thebus company’s owner told aPennsylvania news station thatthe driver, 66-year-old Samuel J.Jackson, hit the Western Av-enue Bridge because he waslooking at his GPS; however, state police would not com-ment on that statement.

Jackson was not charged or

cited as of deadline yesterday, and police said it may be weeksbefore the cause of the crash isknown.

Jackson was driving stu-dents back to Pennsylvania af-ter a tour of Harvard.

While the distracted drivingcampaign launched yesterday isaimed at Massachusetts teens,Saturday’s accident driveshome the point that young mo-torists are not always to blame.

“It’s all of us. The teens youcan get to easier because theydon’t have bad habits. You canstart young. I’m firmly con-vinced that the teens are goingto change the rest of us becausethey’re going to say to the restof us, ‘You can’t be driving thatway. You can’t be using yourcell phone or programing yourGPS, then tell me not to do it.You’re a hypocrite,’” Feldmansaid.

Texting behind the wheel isoften associated with distracteddriving, but according to Feld-man, only one-third of distract-ed driving fatalities involvesthe use of cell phones. Othercommon causes include eating, drinking and programming aGPS, he said.

“In our program, the firstvideo we show is of a distractedbus driver who is fiddling withpapers. [Lawyers] have casesagainst bus companies all over.… It’s unbelievable,” he said.

Schilling puts Soxsymbol up for sale

Bidding is now under way for the infamous bloodysock So far the crusty cloth has attracted one bidder

Auction house expects more interest before live event

It once had a spot in baseball’sHall of Fame as a symbol of thetransition from constantheartache to overreaching joyfor countless Red Sox fans overan 86-year period.

But now, former pitcherCurt Schilling is auctioning offhis bloody World Series sock sothat he can help pay off costsassociated with his failed video-game business.

Online bidding on the sock, which Schilling wore duringGame 2 of the 2004 World Se-ries, started last week. In thattime it has attracted one bid-der, who has bid the openingprice of $25,000. A live auctionwill be held in New York Citylater this month and will startwith the highest amountreached through the onlinebidding.

Chris Ivy, director of thesports department at Texas-based Heritage Auctions, saidhe expects interest to pick uptoward the end of the onlinebidding period.

“I do think it’ll get a fewmore hits before it goes to livebidding,” said Ivy, whose auc-tion house is running the bid-ding on the sock.

Schilling bled through the

sock after receiving injectionsto help him through an ankleinjury.

Schilling’s business, 38 Stu-dios, collapsed last year after hemoved it from Massachusettsto Rhode Island. He is being

sued by a Rhode Island stateagency that claims the gamingcompany withheld informationthat would have prevented itfrom being awarded a $75 mil-lion loan, according to WPRI.

Dan Lebowitz, the executivedirector of Northeastern’sSport in Society center, saidthat what Schilling is doingwith the sock is like what anyperson who lost a job would doin order to survive.

“In the end, it’s like any-thing else. He tried to face aparticular challenge head-onlike he has as an athlete, and, just like in sport, sometimesyou win and sometimes youlose,” said Lebowitz.

“I’m obligated to try and makeamends, andunfortunately thisis one of thebyproducts of that.” SCHILLING TO WEEI

President takes his guncontrol push to Midwest

President Barack Obama yester-day took his gun control cam-paign to Minneapolis, making avisible push for reform aheadof his State of the Union ad-dress in a state with an activehunting culture where effortshave helped curtail violence.

On Jan. 16 he proposed re-quiring criminal backgroundchecks for all gun sales, includ-ing private sales, banning so-called assault weapons and lim-iting ammunition magazinesto 10 rounds.

Gun control efforts face anuphill climb politically in theface of a powerful pro-gun lob-by and a strong U.S. tradition ofhunting and gun ownership. A

right to bear arms is constitu-tionally guaranteed to Ameri-cans. An effort to ban assault ri-fles is seen as the toughest sellamong the president’s propos-als in a country where manyAmericans see gun control asan infringement of their rightsand an example of governmentoverreach.

White House spokesman JayCarney said Obama still sup-ported the ban despite lacklus-ter backing on Capitol Hill.REUTERS

A skeleton with a cleavedskull and a curved spine en-tombed under a car park isthat of Richard III, archaeolo-gists said yesterday, solving a500-year-old mystery aboutthe final resting place of thelast English king to die in bat-tle.

Cast by Shakespeare as adeformed tyrant whomurdered two princes in theTower of London, Richardwas slain in a bid to keep hiscrown at the 1485 Battle ofBosworth Field, immortalized by the words:“A horse! A horse! My king-dom for a horse!”

In one of the most signifi-cant archaeological finds ofrecent English history, a teamfrom the University of Leices-ter said evidence showed askeleton found last year inexcavations of a mediaevalfriary under a city car parkwas that of Richard.

“It’s the academic conclu-sion ... that beyond reason-able doubt the individual ex-humed at Grey Friars in Sep-tember 2012 is indeedRichard III, the lastPlantagenet king ofEngland,” lead archaeologistRichard Buckley said.REUTERS

Why Minnesota?

The state is emblematic ofthe challenges Obama willface in advancing gun controlin Congress.

While Minnesota’s two Dem-ocratic U.S. senators have saidthey are sympathetic to meas-ures to curb gun violence, theNational Rifle Association, thelargest U.S. gun rights group, has backed all four Republi-cans and two of the Democ-rats who represent the statein the House of Representa-tives.

Obama’s visit to Minneapolis, which in January hosted a re-gional gun summit led in partby Minneapolis Mayor R.T.Rybak, is the Democratic presi-dent’s first trip outside ofWashington to promote hisgun violence agenda.

The unknown Joy Divisionrevealed in new memoir

Despite their legendary reputation for darkness, Joy Division did havemoments of joy Peter Hook on practical jokes and losing a friend

Joy Division went to greatlengths to keep the public inthe dark during their brief ca-reer as a band. The influentialgoth-rock band from Manches-ter, U.K., trafficked in albumartwork that never featuredtheir name, much less the facesof members, and on the rare oc-casions they granted inter-views, their answers were usu-ally evasive or flippant. The on-ly thing for listeners to go onwas the dark and mysteriousmusic. Bassist Peter Hookwants to change all of that withhis new book, “Unknown Pleas-ures: Inside Joy Division.”

“I was a little bit wary of de-bunking all the myths,” admitsHook. “I just got sick of readingbooks about Joy Division bypeople who weren’t there, andthey always seem to focus on

the dark and mysterious inten-sity of Joy Division, which issomething that, whilst I appre-ciate, I can’t say that I recognizeit completely.”

“Unknown Pleasures” is rifewith demystifying tales of a

young band on tour for the firsttime. At one point, singer IanCurtis, whose brooding imagewould later feature heavily intogoth iconography, is giggling atglimpsing a woman changingbackstage. The band constantlyplayed practical jokes on oneanother and on other bands —Curtis calls his bandmates“sneaky, japing tossers.” Butwhile Hook’s book revels in funmemories and rides the narra-tive arc of a band finding theirunique identity, the author alsocomes to terms with signs heshould have picked up on indi-cating Curtis was in trouble. Ona roller-coaster of prescriptiondrugs to treat his epilepsy, Cur-tis killed himself on a Saturdaynight when the band wereabout to embark on their firstU.S. tour that Monday.

“He must have gotten to thepoint on Saturday night that hedecided he couldn’t cope any-more,” says Hook. “I was withhim on Friday and he was ab-solutely f—ing fine. But thatwas the thing in Joy Division; itwasn’t as if he was laying in thecorner, whimpering, beggingfor help. He was quite normal.”

Julie Andrews: The princess diariesThe legendary performer on the new chapter in her life, being a best-selling children’s

author Writing is now where her heart is Speaking of princesses, what about Kate?

The legendary JulieAndrews has wornmany artistic hats — allto great acclaim. Her

latest, that of a children’sbook author, is no different.

“To date, my daughterEmma and I have done about27 books together — that’s areal joy for me,” she says inher unmistakable British lilt, calling from her home inLong Island.

“The Very Fairy PrincessFollows Her Heart” is the lat-est installment in the VeryFairy Princess series that sheproduces with her daughter,Emma Walton Hamilton, andChristine Davenier, who il-lustrates the series.

Their inspiration? To settheir main character, thelively Geraldine, apart fromthe more stereotypical liter-ary princesses out there.

“We wanted to make hernot really an anti-fairyprincess, but one who is moreof a tomboy,” says Andrews.“Geraldine’s got her socksabout her ankles but she’sconvinced she’s a fairyprincess. And most of thetime, she convinces everyoneelse that she is one, too.”

“The Very Fairy PrincessFollows Her Heart” tags along

with Geraldine as she hand-crafts valentines for herclass. Because of a mix-up,she gets to school withoutthem. By the end of the story, she saves the day by tellingeach of her classmates whatmakes them “sparkle in hereyes and heart,” explainsAndrews.

What makes Andrews’“heart sparkle” is writing theseries with her daughter.

“I mean, I do a lot of otherthings. I tour, I speak and dothe occasional film, so I’m alittle bit all over the place,”she explains. “But what I’dcall my day job these days —and my joy — is writing. It’scertainly where my heart isright now in this phase of mylife.”

ANDREWECCLES

Andrews on areal princessWe ask Andrews what shethinks of her real princess,Kate Middleton and she is,of course, nothing butgracious. “I think she’sterrific. I wish her well. Imean, I can’t imagine whatshe’s going through in thelimelight having a babyright now,” she says. “But Ithink she’ll pull it offbeautifully. They seem to bea very happy couple, andI’m so glad for thembecause they probably needeach other very much, youknow, with the job thatthey’ve got.” When wesuggest she put a few of herbooks in the mail toMiddleton once she has herbaby, Andrews laughs.“Well, who knows? I guessit depends on what theyhave. You never know!”Dorothy Robinson

[email protected]

Andrews’ daughter, Emma, and granddaughter, Hope, are the

inspirations for The Fairy Princess series. “She’s wonderfully strong

and positive and sweet beneath it all. Needless to say, she’s

a honey bun,” she says of her granddaughter.

We used to agreethat freedom didn’tpreclude safetyRE: “YOU CAN’T VOTE VIOLENCEOUT OF OFFICE” (METRO, FEB. 4)Letter writer Marcus DeForestargues that we can’t endviolence until society has achange of values. That’s like ar-guing we should not have lawsagainst burglary, because it stilloccurs, or safety laws for carsand highways, becauseaccidents still occur.

The Constitution gives us theright to bear arms, but also theright of self-government — e.g.,safety rules. In the 1940s and‘50s, the NRA agreed that safetyrules for guns and gun saleswere reasonable.

Now the NRA gun lobby isfunded by corporations thatmake guns. They spread fearabout safety rules. They say ruleswon’t help. We don’t need

assault weapons, high capacitymagazines or cop-killer bullets.HARRY THORN, VIA E-MAIL

I began reading MarcusDeForest’s letter thinking “Great,a reasonable, insightfulapproach.” But then I read thestatement: “The argument thatguns kill people is logically akinto saying spoons made me fat.”

What? We have to agree thatguns are built to fire bullets. Intopeople. To hurt them. Yes, thereare hunting rifles andmarksmanship is an Olympicsport, but what we’re dealingwith is military weaponsdesigned to kill people rapidly. That’s the issue. These guns andalso incidentally bulletsdesigned for maximum carnagedid not exist when theConstitution and SecondAmendment were written.Neither were cars or nuclear

power plants. That doesn’tmean they can’t be regulated. They must be regulated.

That’s the argument. TheNRA and its apologists opposesome clearly needed regulationson who can own and sell andprofit from the kind of guns andammo that have only one pur-pose — killing a lot of people. That’s it. And finally, the NRA hasto lose one, their campaignmoney be damned.PAUL SIMONS, VIA E-MAIL

The ‘haves’ havenever had so muchFifty years ago, governmentalactions to improve the economiccondition of citizens were con-sidered meritorious endeavors.Any legislator proposing suchaction today would probably belaughed out of office; that waswell before the electoral and leg-

islative processes were capturedby the oligarchic 2 percent.

This has set the stage for theobscene concentration of the na-tional wealth and the demise ofa prideful contributing middle-class. There has been no countryin history where 2 percent of itspopulation has been allowed togather up so much of the nation-al wealth, Make no mistakeabout it, this has beenaccomplished through otherthan moral and ethical means. We seem to forget that, most of-ten, it is taxpayer fundedresearch that initiates the found-ing of great enterprises and it isa cared-for middle-class that sus-tains them.

If we continue to believe themyth that sometime in thefuture the national wealth willtrickle down to everyone, we arein for a rude awakening. It istime to begin the conversationabout those who, because oftechnology, automation and cor-porate greed, will never againhave jobs that will support ameaningful life. There must anequitable sharing of the nationalwork and the national wealth.LEWIS WALSH, VIA E-MAIL

+Online Online MBA courses are de-signed for convenient accessfrom anywhere in the world.

Many of these schools ar-gue that MBA students aretaught very similar, if not thesame, curricula — so theygraduate with the same skills.

If you are considering anonline MBA course but don’tknow which course tochoose, it can be useful tolook at business schools thathave already been accreditedafter operating regular MBAcourses on campus for manyyears. TOPMBA.COM

Which MBAstudy format isright for you?

Full-time The full-time MBA programis the most renowned of allMBA degrees and, accordingto research by TopMBA.com,is the preferred option formore than 55% of MBA can-didates.

Students can expect torub shoulders with a widerange of people fromdiverse backgrounds. Assuch, the full-time MBA pro-gram gives studentsunrivalled access to a peer-to-peer education with tal-ented businesspeople fromall over the world.

One- or two-year U.S. business schools tend tooffer two-year MBAprograms, but in Europe thepreferred model is the one-year program.

The two-year option gen-erally has an assisted intern-ship during the intermediatesummer, allowing more timefor personal developmentand networking.

The one-year option is ex-tremely intense and will takeup almost all of the student’stime. However, the coursewill be less of a financial in-vestment and will mean lesstime out of the workplace.

Part-time A part-time MBA program of-fers distinct advantages.

It minimizes thedisruption to a candidate’spersonal and professionallife, allowing them to stay inwork and to pay their waythrough earning an MBA.

Many of the best businessschools have viable part-timeMBA courses that take placeafter work, at weekends orduring holiday periods.

The downside is that jug-gling commitments whilestaying on top of the syllabuscan be demanding.

Distance-learning Both online and distance-learning programs havebecome increasingly popular.

In the past, the varyingquality of programs meantemployers generally favoredgraduates from full- or part-time campus-basedprograms. However, greateraccreditation means this per-ception is rapidly changing.

While the majority ofstudy is via the Internet, distance learning MBAstudents are required toattend some on-campussessions, exams andnetworking events.

Want an MBA? Consider studying at your own pace.

Executive MBAs

For professionals withsix or more years ofwork experience, anexecutive MBA is forthose who wish towork while pursuingan MBA. The programis delivered in apart-time format overa period of 12 to 24months.

The MBA admissions processcan be long and complicated.

MBA admission testsThe often-feared GraduateManagement Admission Test isthe most common of all admis-sion tests for MBA programs. Asof June 2012, the GMAT nowconsists of four sections: Quan-titative, Verbal, an AnalyticalWriting Assessment and Inte-grated Reasoning. GMAT scoresare required in applications tomany of the top MBA pro-grams.

There are alternatives. While the Graduate Record Ex-amination is designed as a stan-dardized test for many differ-ent graduate programs, moreand more business schools areaccepting it each year.

Many business schools runtheir own MBA admission tests. These usually follow similarstyles and test structures to theGMAT; however, they are con-

ducted by the schools them-selves, allowing them to ensuretests adequately evaluate candi-date performance according totheir own programs.

Admissions essaysMBA admissions essays are a re-quirement for nearly all of thetop business schools. Instead oftraditional essays, candidatesare usually required to writeabout their suitability for theMBA program to which theyare applying.

When applying to multipleschools, it can be the case thatmany of the essay questions arequite similar. Successful appli-cants reject the urge to submitthe same essays, instead writ-ing passages that specificallyrefer to the school in question.

MBA admissions checklistInterviews

Usually reserved for MBAapplicants who’ve completedadmissions components, interviews can be the finalstage in the process.

MBA admission interviews canbe conducted by various dif-ferent representatives: the ad-missions departments them-selves, previous alumni oreven businesspeople with alink to the school. While some interviews maytake place in an informal set-ting, candidates should alwaysremember that they are beingjudged on their suitability foran MBA program and shouldact accordingly.Further requirements may beasked of candidates depend-ing on the school. Forinstance, English languagetest scores will usually be re-quired from non-Englishspeaking candidates.

Admissions tests, interviews, essays, résumés andEnglish language tests can all play a vital role forbusiness school admission departments when selectingwhich candidates to accept and who they should reject

ReferencesProfessional references or let-ters of recommendation are arequirement at many schools. While the emphasis eachMBA admissions departmentplaces on these referencescan vary substantially, in caseswhere two similar applicantshave applied but only oneplace is available, they couldwell be the differencebetween success andrejection.

The pursuit of an MBA can be a competitive endeavor.

WAVEBREAK MEDIA

First steps forchoosing theright schoolBusiness schools are not all thesame. Carefully research yourchoice of school to ensure that itmatches your requirements.

1Determine why you wantan MBA: The very first step is

to analyze your personal moti-vations for pursuing an MBA.Are you a career switcher or acareer progresser? Do you wantto carry on working while youtake your MBA or do want tofocus on your studies and con-sider your options? Is a jump insalary what matters most or doyou seek international experi-ence? Is your primary goal tobroaden your education andyour horizons or to developspecialist skills for careerenhancement?

An honest self-assessmentwill save you a great deal oftime and energy and help youmake a more focused selectionof schools.

2Identify your career goals:The second thing to do

when considering businessschool is to try to narrow downthe types of career you mightlike to pursue, balanced by arealistic self-assessment ofyour current abilities and skillsbase. Examine your motivescarefully. Determining whereyou want to work after yourstudies should be a major partof this process.

Metro’s NBA power rankings | by Jimmy Toscano

THUNDER (35-12)Consider the Thun-der the latest victimof stone-cold killer

Kyrie Irving. Irving dropped 35on them Saturday night, hand-ing Oklahoma City its fourth lossin seven games heading into lastnight.

2HEAT (30-14)Miami is danger-ously close todropping out of

the top spot in the East, but itstarted a five-game home stretchagainst the Bobcats on Monday. Here’s guessing all will be rightcome next Monday.

3

SPURS (38-11)The Spurs are winners of10 in a row, but the betternews is that an MRI foundno structural damage inTim Duncan’s left knee orright ankle. They’ll obvi-ously need him to hoistthe Larry O’Brien Trophyonce again, now a realis-tic goal for this team. They’re the new No. 1.

GETTY IMAGES

CELTICS (24-23)They’ve lost RajonRondo and JaredSullinger for the

season, but the Celtics have inex-plicably won four games in arow. Will they run out of gas thisweek? Is a trade coming? Youfigure them out.

14ROCKETS (26-23)The Rockets arethe only team inthe NBA with a

top-five scorer (James Harden,25.8 ppg), top-five rebounder(Omer Asik), and a top-five steal-er (Jeremy Lin, 2.04). There’s notelling what this means.

15

CLIPPERS (34-15)This much weknow: The Clippersare going nowhere

without Chris Paul. They’ve lostsix of their last eight with himon the sidelines nursing a bumknee. Would Kevin Garnetthelp? Obviously, but Paul mustbe healthy this spring.

4

NUGGETS (30-18)If you’re lookingfor the NBA’s best“team” (i.e. no su-

perstar), take a look toward Den-ver. The Nuggets are on a roll, having won six in a row. They’velost just four games since Christ-mas.

5GRIZZLIES (30-16)The Grizzlies just fi-nalized a trade thatsent swingman Rudy

Gay to Toronto in a three-teamdeal that got them TayshaunPrince, Austin Daye and Ed Davis. It’s a classic salary dump thatdoesn’t improve the team.

6WARRIORS (30-17)It’s good to seethat Stephen Cur-ry’s ankle sprain

was a minor one. That dude de-serves a break. Wait, poor choiceof words there. They’ve got atough back-to-back on the roadstarting tonight in Houston andthen will try to beat the Thunderin OKC.

7

KNICKS (30-15)Credit where it’sdue: The Knicksmanhandled the

Kings on Saturday night, 120-81.They’ve won four in a row andhave a manageable Februaryschedule ahead of them. No. 1seed by March?

8NETS (28-19)The Nets followedup a blowout lossto the Heat with a

close win over the Bulls. Thatabout sums up where they’re atright now — a second-tier teamin the East. Last week they wereNo. 8 in this space.

9

BUCKS (25-21)Milwaukee is 9-5under interimhead coach Jim

Boylan and hanging around inthe Eastern Conference a lotlonger than many had originallythought. It looks like they’ll befighting with Atlanta, Boston andPhiladelphia for the final playoffspots.

13

BULLS (29-18)Chicago has over-come the DerrickRose injury up to

this point in the season, but withAll-Star Joakim Noah (plantarfasciitis) injured and Carlos Booz-er (hamstring) iffy, they’ll have atough time grabbing wins thismonth.

PACERS (28-19)The Pacersrebounded nicelyfrom three

straight losses with two double-digit wins over the Pistons andHeat. It’s the one over the Heatthat’ll give them someconfidence going foward.

HAWKS (26-20)It’s getting to be“do-or-die” timefor a Hawks team

that could see its star, JoshSmith, traded away by the dead-line. Don’t worry, though, Hawksfans — Zaza Pachulia is stayingput in the ATL.

11

Bruins’ Thornton,Marchand makingquick progressBoston forwards Shawn Thorn-ton, who suffered a concussionlast week against Buffalo, andBrad Marchand, who is out withan upper-body injury, areexpected to rejoin the teamsoon, according to Bruins head

coach Claude Julien.“He’s feeling really good,”

Julien said about Thornton.“He’s been symptom-free for a

few days now. Things are goingwell, but obviously there’s aprotocol to follow and we’re cer-tainly going to follow that to theletter.” MATT BURKE
