Community groups protested recently to save the historic Mary Help of Christians Church. / GREENWICH VILLAGE SOCIETY FOR HISTORIC PRESERVATION

Preservationists fighting to protect a historic East Village church happened upon a surprising discov-ery: the 100-year-old Mary Help of Christians Church was built on an older Cath-

olic cemetery.The discovery was made

the day before community groups were organizing a rally in the hopes of getting developer David Steiner to agree to develop only on the vacant lot next to the church, and to re-use the church structure rather than tear it down.

Steiner has apparently acquired permits to demol-ish the church, its 150-year-old rectory and a 90-year-old school connected to it, according to Andrew Ber-man with the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation.

It is unclear whether there are still bodies there. Berman said an exhuma-tion was conducted in 1909 when bodies were sup-posed to be moved to Cal-vary Cemetery in Queens, but “there is reasonable doubt” as to whether all of the bodies were relocated.

The church was made famous by Allen Ginsberg, who referenced the build-ing in the poem “Fourth Floor, Dawn, Up All Night Writing Letters.”

Dead may haunt city development

Bodies still there?

“Typically, with cemeteries like this, when they are closed down and quote-unquote moved, oftentimes the movement is far from complete, and it’s common to fi nd human remains were left behind.” Berman

Superstorm. Cuomo: Be wary of Hurricane Sandy ‘fl ood car’ sales Gov. Andrew Cuomo warned consumers on Tuesday to look out for used car sales that could land them with storm-damaged cars.

Buyers can access a database from the Na-tional Insurance Crime Bureau to check whether a used car is a “flood car” from superstorm Sandy.

Cuomo warned that around 400,000 cars were flooded after Sandy.

The database runs vehicle identification numbers to check if the car has been declared as salvage by an insurance company participating in the NICB VINCheck program. DANIELLE TCHOLAKIAN Many vehicles were water-damaged during Sandy. / GETTY IMAGES

Children fi ght to stop library budget cuts

Children in the Bronx ral-lied at the Kingsbridge Library to protest against looming budget cuts to the New York Public Library. The NYPL, which servic-es the Bronx, Manhattan and Staten Island, is in for a fiscal battering, facing a

possible budget cut of $47 million.

This would amount to their total operating bud-get of $133.6 million being slashed by a third.

The budget cut would threaten 14 of the city’s 91 locations.

Bronx library network manager Michael Alvarez is most concerned about this loss of access. This would be the first year that full days would be lost from cuts, he said. It’s a loss that he says would be hardest on the city’s most vulner-able populations and the people most in need of the libraries’ resources.

It would appear that any-one counting Anthony Weiner out of the mayoral race was mistaken.

In the first poll since the former congressman an-nounced his candidacy last week, Weiner placed sec-ond among the registered Democrats surveyed, with-in striking distance of City Council Speaker Christine Quinn. Quinn would re-ceive 24 percent of the vote if the primary were held to-day, the Marist poll found — just five points higher than the man whose politi-cal career was seemingly derailed just two years ago by a lewd photos scandal.

Dr. Lee M. Miringoff, director of The Marist Col-lege Institute for Public Opinion, said the race would likely come down to a runoff between the top two candidates. Quinn currently has an edge over Weiner in a head-to-head matchup, commanding 48 percent of support to his 33 percent, but Miringoff

stressed that it was too soon to tell.

“The Democratic prima-ry for mayor remains wide open,” he said.

Trailing Weiner with 14 percent of Democratic sup-port was Bill de Blasio, then Bill Thompson (13 percent), John Liu (8 percent), Sal Albanese (1 percent) and Erick Salgado (less than 1 percent). More than 20 percent of Democrats sur-veyed reported that they were still undecided.

With the race heating up, Weiner headed to his first mayoral forum on Tuesday night.

He joked on Twitter ear-lier that he had planned to try out the city’s new bike share program, but that the weather was forc-ing him to seek alternative transportation.

City Council members an-nounced a new tax break for New York City veter-ans on Monday, May 27.

Right now, veterans who own homes lose property tax breaks when they move within the city, Council members said.

For benefits to begin July 1, people have to submit an application by March 15 of that year.

But if the resident moves or fills out the ap-plication after that dead-line, they don’t get the exemption until the next year.

The new legislation will provide an exemp-

tion for veterans.“I think we can all

agree that we shouldn’t be punishing anyone sim-ply because they move,” Council Speaker Chris-tine Quinn said. “Provid-ing our veterans with a little financial relief is the least we can do to thank the men and women who have done — and do — so much for our country.”

Added Councilman Vincent Ignizio, “Our veterans have served our country with honor and distinction and deserve our thanks — not unnec-essary financial burdens.”

Last week, the Council also voted to require ev-

ery city agency to desig-nate one person to be in charge of how their agen-cy might assist veterans.

Under the legislation, each agency must desig-nate one person to work with the Mayor’s Office of Veteran’s Affairs.

“We hope this legisla-tion will help to allevi-ate any burdens veterans have faced in the past when navigating city gov-ernment and allow them to seamlessly access the services they need and de-serve,” Quinn said.

Life is going swimmingly for Karl-Johan Persson, H&M’s young, handsome CEO: despite the global recession the cheap-chic chain is doing well. But the recent factory collapse in Bangladesh has put H&M in the spotlight, even though the retailer didn’t use the factory. In an exclusive interview with Metro at H&M’s headquar-ters in Stockholm, Persson proposes a new solution: a tag added to every piece of clothing that informs the customer if it was made in a safe factory.

Last month a clothing fac-tory collapsed and killed more than 1,000 workers. Now H&M, the biggest manufacturer of clothes in Bangladesh, has signed an agreement where you agree to help your Ban-gladeshi suppliers pay for safety measures. Are the factories safe now?

The factory collapse was horrific, but our code of conduct bans use of factories in residential areas, so this was not an H&M supplier. But we’ve been working to improve conditions in Bangladesh for a long time. You can never be 100 percent sure. Accidents happen in Sweden, too. We already have 100 full-time inspec-tors who travel around to our suppliers to make sure they adhere to our code of conduct when it comes to building safety, fire safety, wages, overtime pay and so on. The major change with the agreement is that we join up with other buy-ers, with trade unions and with the government.

But isn’t the problem that people want cheap clothes? It never makes fi nancial sense for a company to use better factories.Yes, but it’s a common

misperception that cheap brands use certain manu-facturers and expensive brands use others. We’re one of 30 to 40 companies buying from many of our suppliers. There are appar-el companies that charge their customers low prices, medium prices and high prices. The workers’ pay is the same regardless of which company is buying.

Couldn’t consumers play a role here? If clothes that are made in safe factories with decent wages had a special tag. I would know exactly what to buy. That would be the very best. Then you’d remove many of these mispercep-tions that low store prices mean bad conditions for the factory workers or poor sustainability work.

KARL-JOHAN PERSSON The CEO of fashion retailer H&M speaks to Metro about skinny models,

aff ordable clothing and Bangladeshi factory workers.

In response to the comment, “The change in public attitude toward skinny models is similar to the growing interest in sustainability.”

Video has emerged of the moment firefighters in eastern China rescued an abandoned newborn baby boy lodged in a sewage pipe directly be-neath a toilet, in a case that has sparked anger on social media sites.

There are frequent reports in Chinese me-dia of babies being aban-doned, often shortly after birth, a problem attributed variously to young mothers unaware they were pregnant, the birth of an unwanted girl in a society that puts greater value on boys or China’s strict family planning rules.

In the latest case, the infant was found in the sewage pipe in a residen-tial building in Jinhua in the wealthy coastal province of Zhejiang on Saturday afternoon, af-ter residents reported the sound of a baby cry-ing, state television said late on Monday.

Firefighters had to re-move the pipe and take it to a nearby hospital, where doctors carefully

cut around it to rescue the baby boy inside, the report said.

The child was in stable condition yester-day, and the police were looking for his parents,

state television added. The case has been

widely discussed on China’s Twitter-like ser-vice Sina Weibo due to the graphic nature of the footage, with calls

for the parents to be se-verely punished.

Singapore to regulate Yahoo, other online news sites Websites that regularly report on Singapore, including Yahoo News, will have to get a license from June 1. This puts them on par with newspapers and television news outlets, in a move seen by some as a bid to rein in freewheeling Internet news.

“Online news sites that report regularly on issues relating to Singapore and have sig-nificant reach among readers here will require an individual license,” Singapore’s Media Development Authority said in a statement.

”This will place them on a more consis-tent regulatory frame-work with traditional news platforms, which are already individually licensed,” the media regulator said. REUTERS

Chinese hackers have gained access to designs of more than two dozen ma-jor U.S. weapons systems, a U.S. report said, as Aus-tralian media said Chinese hackers had stolen the blueprints for Australia’s new spy headquarters.

Citing a report prepared for the Defense Department by the De-fense Science Board, the Washington Post said the

compromised U.S. designs included those for combat aircraft and ships, as well as missile defenses.

Among the weapons listed in the report were the advanced Patriot mis-sile system, the Navy’s Ae-gis ballistic missile defense systems, the F/A-18 fighter jet, the V-22 Osprey, the Black Hawk helicopter and the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. REUTERS

Obama, Christie reunite to promote NJ Shore recovery

President Barack Obama and Chris Christie, New Jersey’s Republican gov-ernor, strolled along the Jersey Shore boardwalk like old friends yes-terday, a political odd couple just hanging out together.

The two men had a common purpose: pro-mote the recovery of the Jersey Shore from the af-tereffects of Sandy, a su-perstorm that hit in the final days of last year’s presidential election campaign. Obama’s well-received show of concern may have helped him win re-election.

So when it came

time to throw a football through a hanging tire at the Touchdown Fever ar-cade game on the board-walk in Point Pleasant, N.J., it was Christie who had a successful toss, an ungainly spiral that went through the tire, after Obama had tried and missed five times with his left-handed throw.

The two leaders, Obama tall and lanky and Christie mid-height and round, gave each other a celebratory high-five, and then Obama referenced Christie’s re-election campaign.

“That’s because he’s running for office,” Obama declared to throngs of tourists, who recorded it all on their smartphones as a light rain fell. Obama received the prize for Chris-tie’s performance — a stuffed bear. Then they worked the rope line. REUTERS

Shoppers walking into a clothing store in New York City’s SoHo neigh-borhood should not be surprised if a smartphone app, rather than a sales-person, greets them at the door.

Some retailers in the United States are start-ing to communicate with shoppers via a smartphone app called Swirl. It uses in-store sensors to track their location in the shop to send them personalized offers and recommenda-tions.

It’s just one of the ways that brick-and-mortar shops are using apps to ap-

peal to younger, more tech-savvy consumers.

“Retailers want to giveconsumers somethingthat’s value-added anddoes what an expert sales-person might do — forexample, tell them, ‘Here’ssome great new products,’or, ‘Here’s a special offerbecause we know you’vebeen looking at hand-bags,’” said Hilmi Ozguc,CEO of Boston-based SwirlNetworks, creator of theSwirl iPhone app.

US shuts shady fund transfer system

U.S. authorities said yesterday that they have shut down a Costa Rica-based money transfer company that alleg-edly provided a digital currency widely used around the world by cybercriminals.

In a statement, of-ficials said authorities in Spain, Costa Rica and New York arrested five people on Friday. They also seized bank accounts and Internet domains associated with the company, Liberty Reserve.

The digital currency is a transferable unit that can be exchanged for cash.

Along with the five arrests, prosecutors filed charges against two more company em-ployees who were still at large in Costa Rica.

According to an indictment filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, “Liberty Reserve has emerged as one of the princi-pal means by which cybercriminals around the world distribute, store and launder the proceeds of their illegal activity.”

The indictment said the company had more than 1 million users, in-cluding at least 200,000 in the United States. It also said that virtually all of its business was related to suspected criminal activity. REUTERS

A former leader of the Egyptian Islamic Jihad who was once a personal guard of Osama bin Laden has denied that the head of al-Qaida was shot dead by U.S. Navy SEALs, claiming he blew himself up instead.

Nabeel Naeem Abdul Fattah said bin Laden blew himself up using an ex-plosive belt when SEALs raided his villa in Pakistan in May 2011.

In an interview with the Dubai-based Gulf News, Fattah said: “Bin Laden and his men defended them-selves. They fired shots at the helicopter that has car-ried the U.S. Special Forces

Fattah claimed that the Americans later chopped up bin Laden’s body before disposing of it to destroy

A Florida judge yesterday ruled out any further de-lay in next month’s trial of George Zimmerman, the former neighborhood watch captain charged with second-degree murder for last year’s killing of unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin.

Circuit Court Judge Debra Nelson, who ruled against a string of defense motions during a two-hour hearing in Seminole County Crimi-nal Court, rejected a defense request to delay the scheduled June 10 start of the trial.

The killing of Martin on Feb. 26, 2012, ig-nited protests across the country.

Much of the public

outcry centered on race issues because police initially declined to ar-rest Zimmerman, who is white and Hispanic, on grounds that he killed the 17-year-old Martin in self-defense.

“The whole world is watching to see if ev-erybody in America gets equal justice,” Benjamin Crump, a lawyer repre-senting Martin’s parents, said after yesterday’s hearing.

Kanye West’s bid to project his video for “New Slaves” on the Alamo in Texas turned out to be a losing battle when it turned out he had no permit for the spontaneous event, accord-ing to Mysanantonio.com.

West announced his inten-tions to use the landmark on his website, prompting around 500 people — both fans and protesters — to turn up. But police got there first. A similar event in Houston was also shut down. “It’s sad that people have such little respect for the Alamo,” said a spokes-man for the Texas General Land Office.

1 It looks like Katy Perry might have been behind Robert Pattinson’s decision to call it quits with Kristen Stewart, according to Life & Style. Perry, a pal of Pattinson’s, reportedly told the “Twilight” star that he deserved better than Stew-art after her affair with director Rupert Sanders came to light last summer. “Katy never really sup-ported Rob’s decision to get back with Kristen. She always said they wouldn’t last,” a source says. “Katy told Rob she didn’t think their relationship could

withstand the cheating scandal. And he deserved better than someone who would destroy a family [like Rupert’s].” Since his breakup, Pattinson has been spotted out and about with Perry in New York and in Santa Barbara, where the pair hung out at a hotel and spied on a wedding rehearsal, accord-ing to People magazine. “They just sat together and watched,” a source says. “They were not affiliated with the wedding party and were not seen min-gling with guests.”

Slow down, Biebs Justin Bieber is getting on his neighbors’ nerves again, this time because he won’t slow down near his home. The pop star was vis-ited by the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department in response to complaints about his reckless driving near his home, according to E! News. Police reportedly received numerous calls about the singer’s driv-ing on Monday alone, with many saying that his speeding endangers the lives of neighbor-hood children playing outside.

Kris Humphries’ mom did not take that blender, okay?

Just when the world thought that the most embarrassing thing to ever happen to Kris Humphries was his quickie sham of a marriage to and public spectacle of a divorce from Kim Kardashian, he went and started arguing with an ex-assistant about a blender. Said assistant, one Tracy Paradise, is suing Humphries (dude can’t catch a break) for withholding money he owes her. Also, she says his mom went and jacked a Magic Bullet blender from her. Kris says his mom wouldn’t do that and is making sort of a fuss about it.

Kris, kindly buy your mom her own kitchen stuff, k?

The “Fast & Furious” movies may be dominated by men like Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson. But it makes room for badass women, too. The latest, “Fast & Furious 6,” finds room for Michelle Rodriguez, Gina Carano, Gal Gadot and Jordana Brewster to throw down some punches. The latter plays the sister of Diesel’s Dominic Toretto and the wife of Paul Walker’s Brian O’Conner. Brewster also does time on the reboot of “Dallas.”

The girls do as much fi ghting as the guys here. Are you a little envious that you didn’t get a few more fi ght scenes?A little bit. That was a sacrifice. … I love what

the baby brings into the mix. I love that it shows [Diesel’s character] Dom’s very sweet, vulnerable side. The fact that he has a new nephew shows the new dynamic in Mia and Brian’s relationship, but I didn’t get to kick ass like Gal [Gadot], Michelle [Ro-driguez] and Gina [Carano]. Have you ever been in a proper fi ght?A girl slapped me once. I went to an all-girl’s school in New York, and a girl slapped me in the dark room — I was developing pictures — she slapped me, and I slapped her back. It was a bitch-slap-ping. The girls in the movie are quite adept at manipulat-

ing the male characters. When have you used your feminine charms to get your own way?I only pull it out for special occasions. [Laughs] Um, I would say if I’m trying to get out of a ticket, or if I’m trying to get on a plane at very short notice. I flirt, and, you know, compli-ments help a lot. I find that disarms people.

You couldn’t drive prior to the “Fast & Furious” mov-ies. I take it that you’re not into cars — what kind of car do you drive?Well, I don’t know much about cars. I love the car I drive, a Range Rover Sport … and I love speeding. Clearly, there’s going to be a “Fast & Furious 7.” What can you tell us about it?Well, nothing is settled at the moment. I’d like it to be stripped down a bit more, and I’d like to go back to our roots and go back to L.A. I think that would be really fun, [to] ex-plore what the characters are like on their own turf.

Q&A

So to speak

Guys that drive souped-up, fl ashy cars look a bit ridiculous. Do you think that they’re trying to compensate for something?I think they can be for some men. ... And you

usually know when you see it. The car that’s the loudest and the flashiest will have a douchebag behind the wheel. Yeah, it’s like jewelry or the bag you’re wearing. You shouldn’t have to show off too much through something material.

Dave Franco is known as two things: James Franco’s little brother and an on-screen a—hole. In “21 Jump Street,” he played an entitled high school drug dealer. In “Warm Bodies” he was the bitter boyfriend of a girl in love with a zom-bie. “I promise this is not a representation of me,” Franco says. “At first it was really fun and liberating playing something outside of myself, to be mean. But after a while, not only have I exhausted this kind of role, but people start think-ing this is how I really I am. I promise I’m a nice guy.”

In “Now You See Me,” a big-budget, all-star caper, he gets to play a mostly nice guy, albeit a sleight-of-hand artist first seen steal-

ing from a tourist. The production style in-

troduced new aspects that he needed to get used to. “Louis Leterrier is a very visual director, and a lot of the scenes have multiple cameras flying about, cir-cling around you,” Franco says. “Most of the time you have no idea whether or not the camera is catching you.”

He also had to learn card tricks. “I can now cut a banana with a playing card,” he reveals. “I wanted it to look realistic.”

Though the film’s cast

is filled with names, it’s hard to be starstruck when you’re brother is James Franco. He claims his brother didn’t get him into the business. “His manager is the one who dragged me into this whole mess,” he says. “My brother has been very supportive. But we don’t talk about acting all that much. That said, he did tell me to be patient, to wait for projects I’m genu-inely passionate about.”

Longevity

On playing younger

Franco is 27 years old but looks like a kid. That’s why he often gets roles playing younger characters. “I don’t love it,” he says, “but it’s more about the role

than the age. Everyone always says, especially in the business, it’s great to look a lot younger than you are, for longevity’s sake. But sometimes I just want to look my damn age and play a character my age. I don’t want to play high school again.”

compositions. The-Dream says it’s his favorite genre.

“When those brass horns come in, there’s drama tied to that. When the flutes come in, there’s some type of majestic feel-ing that comes over you,” he says of the classical compositions he’s often listening to. “You’re just listening. There’s no judg-ment. It’s not ‘Yeah, well he sucks, so I’m not listen-ing to whatever his record is or whether he did a mag-ical thing or not or wheth-er that song makes sense.’”The-Dream says American culture pays more atten-tion to fashion choices and rumors than the most im-portant factor concerning an artist — the music.

“All those genius [com-posers] were probably kind of crazy themselves, but what we took from them most was that their music was outstanding and they were great at it,” he says. “Period.”

The-Dream has always been a sex-obsessed R&B genius, but now he’s turned things up a notch. On his new al-bum, “IV Play,” which drops this week, the singer, song-writer and producer isn’t afraid to express his desires. He says the extra dose of risque talk and bawdy calls for sex are a reflection of where he’s at in his life, and where we’re at as a society. For the uninitiated, this is ratchet-infused R&B.

“I’d like to think it’s a very vibe-y, adult album,” says the man born Terius Nash. “I’ve been out, I’ve been in clubs so I know we’re in the ratchet era of things. I’m sure there’s been a lot of ratchetness on my album because of what’s been going through our culture, which is a good thing, by the way. The ‘ratchet’ word sounds like it’s negative, but it’s ac-tually more free than most R&B songs could be, than pop could be. ‘I don’t give a f—’ — that’s basically what it’s saying.”

If “IV Play” embraces more explicit come-ons — and a few more drug references — than we’re used to, it still boasts the same sound we’d expect from the musical master-mind behind some of the most memorable songs in modern R&B. The-Dream has crafted megahits for the likes of Beyonce (“Sin-gle Ladies (Put a Ring on It)”), Rihanna (“Umbrella”) and Justin Bieber (“Baby”), and racked up multiple Grammy Awards, so it’s no surprise that industry heavyweights like Jay-Z, Beyonce, Pusha T and 2 Chainz appear on “IV Play,” which rounds out a hand-

ful of edgier tracks with sweet serenades and dark, introspective numbers.

The wave of ratchet hip-hop may not be the most surprising influence on “IV Play,” though. You might also hear some classical mu-sic making its way into the

R&B. Hip-hop’s premier songwriter goes from racy to ratchet with his brand new album.

What we’re into

Evolve kefi r We love kefir — it’s got more gut-boosting bacteria than Greek yogurt, with double the protein and 10 percent more

calcium — but we know not everyone is into slurping the the slightly tangy cool treat. Now, there’s a new option: Evolve’s spoonable Greek kefir, which is the first product of its kind to hit shelves. It’s less tangy than the drinkable stuff, and comes in fruit-on-the-bottom flavors like strawberry, blueberry and peach. Find it in the dairy aisle.

Organic Avenue’s quinoa bowl Organic Avenue, purvey-ors of orange totes and green juices that are high-ly coveted coast to coast, is furthering its cooked-food options with the release of its first cooked vegan product, the quinoa bowl. Ross Pelton, R.Ph., C.C.N., says that his career has bridged two worlds: that of a registered pharmacist dealing with medications, and that of a certified clini-cal nutritionist concerned with natural healing. This duality has led him to dis-cover what he calls drug-induced nutrient deple-tion. This side effect of medications can’t be mea-sured in nausea, vomiting, headaches or whatever is on those unappealing lists. Rather, drug-induced nutrient depletion hap-pens slowly, over time, as a medication either inhibits absorption or production — or leaches — nutrients from the body. Among the many common drugs that produce this are oral con-

traceptives, which prompt-ed Pelton to write his new book, “The Pill Problem.”

“As a class of drugs, oral contraceptives have an enormous effect on nu-trients,” said Pelton. “They deplete all B-vitamins, magnesium, selenium, zinc, tyrosine and coen-zyme Q10. The only other medication that comes close to its effect on nutri-ents is steroids.”

According to Pelton’s book, without these nutri-ents, ailments such as de-pression, sexual malaise, lack of energy and insom-nia can develop. To avoid

this, Pelton recommends nutritional supplements to counteract the depletion.

“Even with a healthy diet, you can’t get the ther-apeutic levels needed,” he said. “I’m concerned with optimal health and the prevention of illness. Women who take oral contraceptives should take a high-potency multi-vitamin and multimineral supplement to provide adequate levels to prevent problems.”

Banana Republic and Milly designer Michelle Smith teamed up for a limited-edition capsule inspired by summers in the Hamptons. The concept is perfect for Smith, whose main line consists of bold, graphic prints — the kind you want to live in during those days of lobster roll lunches. But before you think the pro-cess was a day at the beach, the partnership marked the first time Smith ventured into menswear. The results: peppy separates for the man who’s not afraid of color. And since Jitney season is here, we pulled three of our favorite looks from the 60-piece line, which hits stores tomorrow. Cell phones. A brand new app improves Android battery life Battery life is always a huge concern with any smartphone. If you’re not careful, you can wind up with quite a few appli-cations running in the background, which drains battery.

Several smartphones now come with built-in software to optimize battery life. For those that don’t, Qualcomm released Snapdragon BatteryGuru, an Android application that monitors what’s going on behind the scenes on your phone, and adjusts your phone’s settings to maximize battery life.

For instance, leaving on the Wi-Fi can drain battery power, as your phone is constantly searching for a Wi-Fi network for connec-tion. BatteryGuru learns your most frequently used Wi-Fi hot spots, and then enables Wi-Fi when you’re around.

Android apps often

refresh more than neces-sary, which adversely effects battery life. Bat-teryGuru pays attention to app usage patterns, then refreshes your apps based on those patterns. This ensures apps are updated when you need them to be — but aren’t draining the battery when you don’t want them to.

A new app saves battery life. MASHABLE

Boy meets game. Boy plays game. Game gets released for another system so boy can play game again, this time in a different format. These reissues, known in the gaming world as ports, have really picked up steam this genera-tion. Here are a couple of “new” releases that might give you deja vu.

‘Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D’

System: Nintendo 3DSCompany: Nintendo•••••

It used to be that portable systems were the severely less powered cousins of home consoles. This is starting to change, with both the Vita and 3DS getting eerily close to home console horse-power. Case in point? “Donkey Kong Country

PORTS-A-PLENTY

“Resident Evil” is now available on more than just Nintendo. CAPCOM

Sidescroller

LAWRENCE [email protected]

Returns 3D” is a near-flawless port of a Wii game from just two years ago.

The game is your aver-age Nintendo sidescroller, meaning it is brilliant. You control the infamous gorilla and his adorable sidekick, Diddy Kong, as they stomp on enemies, avoid obstacles and col-lect lots of trinkets. It’s just as good as it was on the Wii, except now you can play on the toilet. Be-ware, however, this game can get brutally difficult.

‘Resident Evil: Revelations’System: Xbox 360 / PS3 / Wii UCompany: Capcom•••••

“Donkey Kong” went from a home console to a porta-ble, so it’s only natural we also look at an example of the reverse. “Resident Evil: Revelations” was released to critical acclaim last year for Nintendo’s 3DS. It was lauded for bringing actual scares back to the “Resi-dent Evil” franchise. Now it’s back, on every major home console.

The game still offers up what you loved about early entries. Ammo is scarce, corridors are tight and ooze monster zombie thingies lurk around every corner. The graphics do look a bit dated. Vistas that looked gorgeous on the 3DS look a bit off when blown up. Even with that, it’s still an essential title for survival horror fans.

We are committed to your company’s success.

Stop blaming America fi rstRe: ‘Put bad practices out of fashion’ (Metro,

May 23) Leave it to letter writers such as R.B. Wilk to express their hatred of capitalism through false concern for the well-being of poor work-ers. People like that use condescending phrases like “typically American” when describing Metro readers who thought the front page on the Bangla-desh factory tragedy was too much for American youth to see. In a global economy, not every country is going to have the living and working standards that we have here. The Yankees are close to getting their first wave of injured players

back.Man-

ager Joe Girardi said Mark Teixeira and Kevin

Youkilis will both play in Double-A Trenton to-day. Teixeira is working his way back from a preseason wrist injury, while Youkilis has been out since April 27 with a back injury. The two could be back as soon as this weekend.

Also, reliever Joba Chamberlain was activated from the DL. Lefty David Huff, who was just claimed Sunday, was desig-nated for assignment in the corresponding roster move. He only appeared in one game and surrendered a run. METRO Jeff Wilpon more or less admitted the obvious yesterday before

Count Jeff Wilpon among those who do not believe there will be a third in-stallment of the Subway Series this year.

During a pregame cer-emony honoring Mariano Rivera, the Mets’ chief op-erating officer told the fu-ture Hall of Famer, “I wish we could see you in the World Series, but I don’t think it will happen.”

Rivera responded, “You

never know.”The Mets entered the

second of four Subway Series games this week in fourth place in the NL East with a 19-29 record. The Yankees are 30-20 and in second place in the AL East.

Wilpon and FDNY Commissioner Salvatore Cassano presented Rivera with a mounted nozzle from a fire hose and a mounted fire call box. Wilpon also asked Rivera to throw out the ceremo-nial first pitch.

Draft delay

NFL Draft moved back The delay between the end of the NFL season and the NFL Draft just got a little bit longer.

The NFL announced yesterday that the draft will be held May 8-10 next year, two weeks later than in 2013. The event will be held at Radio City Music Hall as

usual. The draft combine will be held Feb. 18-25.

Commissioner Roger Goodell blamed the delay on an Easter show being held at the venue in late April. METRO

‘Good’ and ready

Goodson on practice fi eld with Jets Embattled Jets running back Mike Goodson was reportedly in at-tendance as organized team activities got un-derway again yesterday.

Goodson was in Florham Park, N.J., last week for the first round of OTAs, but only to speak with team personnel after his May 17 arrest for possession of marijuana and an illegal hand gun.

Media were not

allowed at yesterday’s practice, but they will be open to the press tomorrow. Goodson, if made available by the team, can expect to answer a flurry of ques-tions. No one on the team has commented on the arrest other than to say the franchise was “investigating the incident.”

Goodson was signed as a free agent this off-season to help replace departed starter Shonn Greene in the backfield. He played for the Raid-ers last season. MARK OSBORNE

New Rutgers athletic director Julie Hermann found herself in even more trouble yesterday when The New York Times reported that she was the subject of a sexu-al discrimination lawsuit filed in 2008. The lawsuit is still pending.

Hermann was a senior athletics administrator with Louisville — her em-ployer before joining Rut-gers — at the time.

The Times reported that assistant track and field coach Mary Bank-er complained to Her-

mann of sexist behavior by the head track and field coach. Banker was fired three weeks later. The lawsuit filing shows emails from Hermann to Banker in which she says Banker “should not

have gone to HR” with the complaints about the head coach.

It was just on Monday that Rutgers President Robert Barchi said Rut-gers had no plans to fire Hermann after it was

reported over the week-end that Hermann had threatened and humili-ated players while a vol-leyball coach at Tennes-see. Hermann said she has no recollection of the meeting in which players brought the complaints against her for which she resigned.

She was also the sub-ject of a lawsuit by a Tennessee assistant who claimed Hermann fired her for getting preg-nant. The assistant won $150,000 from the school in the suit.

Hermann was hired in April. Previously, the school relieved Tim Per-netti for his mishandling of the firing of men’s basket-ball head coach Mike Rice for abusing players.

No. 2

Rangers(32-17)Texas dropped two of three to the Athletics at home last week, including a Yu Darvish start, thus the reason for their drop. They still have the best pitching the AL has to off er, posting a 3.44 ERA, tops in the AL as of Sun-day. Texas is in a stretch of 12 of 16 road games.

No. 1

Cardinals(33-17)

An impressive 4-2 week moved the Cardinals to the top of Metro’s power rankings. Pitch-ing and defense was the theme of the week as they gave up an average of just 2.5 runs per game. With a win on Friday, starter Lance Lynn improved to 7-1 on the year.

No. 3

Braves(31-20)Winning eight of nine going into Monday will allow you to move into the Top 3. The Braves beat up on lowly com-petition in the Dodgers, Twins and Mets, but did so in convincing fashion, outscoring teams 49-25 in that stretch. Now they face the Blue Jays.

No. 4

Yankees(30-20)The big news coming out of the Bronx last week involved yet another big-name injury as Curtis Granderson fractured his pinkie and is expected to miss at least four weeks. The team is now embroiled in the Subway Series with the Mets this week.

No. 5

Reds(32-19)After winning fi ve in a row, one would have thought the Reds would have taken over fi rst place, but they are in the same division as the Cards, so second place will have to do. The Reds have an intriguing matchup with Cleveland this week.

No. 6

Pirates(31-20)The surprise Pirates are hanging tough in the loaded NL Central. Going into yesterday, Pitts-burgh had won fi ve of its last seven games with pitching and defense the key. They held oppo-nents to two runs or less in all but one game in that stretch.

No. 7

Red Sox(32-20)After a fi ve-game win streak, the White Sox took two-of-three from the Red Sox, dropping them out of our Top 5. They did, however, bounce back by taking three of four from the In-dians and they kicked off their set with the Phillies with a win Monday.

No. 8

Tigers(29-20)A dominant 5-1 week has pushed the Tigers past the Indians for sole possession of fi rst place in the AL Central. The Tigers outscored their opponents 35-18 this week, and now lead the American League inhitting with a .285average.

No. 9

Indians(27-23)The big story surround-ing the team last week was manager Terry Francona’s return to Boston, but the team did get swept in a brief two-game set with the Tigers to drop out of fi rst place in the AL Central. Now they start a brutal stretch.

No. 10

Orioles(28-23)Despite struggling against the AL East of late, the Orioles remain in the No. 10 spot, mostly because of their powerful off ense this year. Going into their clash with the Nationals, they were second in the MLB in runs scored with 253.
