THE HERMITAGE. On the banks of the River Braan, the Hermitage has been visited and admired for nearly 250 years and continues to draw people from all over the world. An attractive woodland walk leads along the river banks through mixed woodland to the picturesque folly of Ossian’s Hall. Each season offers something different here but the autumn colours are particularly striking. OPEN all year. Situated beside the A9, 0.5 mls north of Dunkeld and Inver turnings.

12 NEIL GOW Born at Inver, Strathbraan in 1727, the son of a weaver. He became a renowned fiddler & regarded as the father of the Strathspey & Reel music. Neil Gow’s Tree a gnarled oak adjoining his croft is where he used play, and his friend the Duke of Atholl used to listen from across the river. Successive Dukes of Atholl became his patron, an account book contains his signature for wages of £5 a yr in 1770. His portrait by Henry Raeburn, and his famous fiddle are still to be seen in Blair Castle, Neil Gow’s cottage at Inver (is now a private residence).

DUNKELD AND BIRNAM WALKS LEAFLET.Highlights eight way-marked trails, including a map, covering a total of nearly 36 miles of paths and tracks in the countryside surrounding Dunkeld, Birnam, Inver and Fungarth. The countryside is noted for its flora, places of interest and associations with the famous fiddler Neil Gow, the writer Beatrix Potter and the naturalist Charles Macintosh. The leaflets are available from the Tourist Information Centre in Dunkeld.

BIRNAM OAK: Immortalised in Shakespeare’s Macbeth it stands some 27 metres (90 feet) high, the last survivor of the legendary Birnam Wood. The witches’ prophecy literally came true, when Malcolm’s army camouflaged itself with branches from the great wood and took by surprise Macbeth’s stronghold at Dunsinane. Arboretum Internationale has carried out tree-work operations, with careful attention the Oak should thrive and may be last another 400 years.

DUNKELD CATHEDRAL The medieval building sits on the banks of the River Tay, the C13th choir is used as the parish church. The architecture spans C13th to C15th The Tower was built in 1469. There are some rare Medieval carved stones, and also a stone from the first church, showing a man on horseback blowing a horn and holding a spear. Behind the alter there is the grave of King Robert II’s son, the Wolf of Badenoch. There is a small museum. Historic Scotland.

21 KENMORE VILLAGE, ‘big-head land’, grew up around the strategically important ferry crossing where the river Tay leaves Loch Tay. In 1572 The Laird of the time Colin Campbell, sponsored the buildings of the inn adjacent to the ferry,as he wanted an ale house more conveniently situated for himself and his family. It is probably Scotland’s oldest working inn.

WHAT IS A CRANNOG? Perthshire is home to more than 40 ancient loch-dwellings, or crannogs, found across Scotland and Ireland and dating from the early Iron Age some 2,500 years ago. Highland Perthshire has more than 18 crannogs in Loch Tay alone, built to take advantage of good lowland farmland and access to trading networks via the River Tay. Who owned these enigmatic homes? Underwater archaeological evidence shows that Taysides’s loch-dwellers

were sophisticated farmers and traders who lived on the loch in peace for several generations. Whether crannogs were built as status symbols or defensive homesteads or both, the answers lie underwater and in the islands which have grown up around their ancient remains. The Scottish Crannog Centre gives you a unique opportunity to go back in time and see for your self how they lived.

FALLS OF ARCHARN: This walk has some really good views of Loch Tay and the falls themselves are special. Consists of two water falls, the upper and lower falls, a Hermits Cave (may be a Victorian folly) and a viewing platform. Particularly spectacular when the burn is in spate. Park in the village of Acharn, just near the signpost “Falls of Acharn, Circular Walk”, it is about 1 mile in length, straight up steepish climb and back down to the village.

DRUMMOND HILL: One of Scotland’s Oldest Managed forests intially planted by Black Duncan the Laird of Breadalbane in the 17th Century. It offers an easy 4.5 miles uphill walk, with the reward of an absolutely fabulous view over Kenmore from Black Rock. Way marked routes, maintained by the Forestry Commission of Scotland. Starts from the Forestry Drummond Hill car park, a short distance from The Mains of Taymouth Courtyard.

CASTLE MENZIES - an outstanding example of a C16th “Z” plan fortified house. The seat of the Chiefs of Clan Menzies and still owned by the Menzies Clan who were heavily involved in the turbulent history of the highlands, Bonnie Prince Charlie, the Stuart Pretender to the throne, rested for two nights in the Castle on his way to the Battle of Culloden in 1746. 43 CROFT MORAIG ‘Mary’s croft’, is a stone circle comprised of 8 standing stones in an oval setting at about 7m diameter followed by a second circle of 12 standing stones about 12m in diameter. Excavations in 1965 found pottery of local Neolithic origin dating to 300BC. Access is through the gate into the field. Explanation plaques tell you the whole story. Situated in a farm field on the left on the A827 from Aberfeldy to Kenmore.

VILLAGE OF DULL. The Village of Dull, ‘Meadow’, had a religious college founded by the monks of Iona in early Christian times. One of the original four ancient stone crosses stands at the junction of the two roads leading to the village. The present church is owned by the Scottish Knights Templar, its ancient burial ground is to the east of the church. The village is linking with the town of BORING in Oregon in the United States.

45 THE FORTINGALL YEW TREE estimated as being between 3,000 and 5,000 years old. Acknowledged as Europe’s oldest tree. In 1769 the tree’s girth was 56ft (over 17 metres). Tradition has it that Pontius Pilate was born here whilst his father was on a mission from Caesar to a Caledonii King. The Yew tree is in Fortingall church yard. OPEN all year, free entry.

THE BIRKS OF ABERFELDY, inspired Robert Burns to write his poem of the same name after a visit in August 1787. The circular 1.5 mile path (allow 1.5 to 2hrs) follows the path alongside the Moness Burn. What you see today is the product of the past, not the recent past but of millions of years. Waterfalls are a feature of these hanging valleys where side streams drop down steep slopes into the main valley. From the centre of Aberfeldy, take the A826 road to Crief for 200yds, the Birks of Aberfeldy is on your right. Excellent leaflet and map available in the car park.

47 ABERFELDY WALKS LEAFLET. This is an excellent leaflet with good maps for each of the eight walks highlighted. There are two Aberfeldy walks, including the famous ‘Birks of Aberfeldy’, a Weem Walk up the Rock of Weem with a good view, Camserney takes you up to old Shielings, there are four walks in and around Kenmore. This is an excellent leaflet which can be purchased from the Tourist Information Centre in Aberfeldy.

GATEWAY TO THE CAIRNGORMS. Today’s Blair Atholl Information Hub, started life way back in the autumn of 2003, as a direct result of Perthshire, being excluded, (contrary to all recommendations at the time), from the newly formed Cairngorm National Park. Over the next four years, a determined group of locals, with representation from across the community, developed ideas as to what the ‘Gateway to the Cairngorms’ should be. These were tested by consultants and on two occasions presented to the local community, asking them to

endorse the ideas through a ballot. Almost exactly 10 years later we have this fabulous information hub . The Blair Atholl Information Hub is a testimony to many people’s hard work over the last 10 years and has provided a real focal point for visitors to the area.

ATHOLL HIGHLANDERS PARADE. The Atholl Highlanders are Europe’s only legal private army, remnants of the old Highland way of life, when every clan chief had his own army made up of local clans folk. Today the Atholl Highlanders are a purely ceremonial regiment; they are responsible for the defence of Blair Castle, the surrounding estate and its inhabitants. At the end of May each year they parade before the Duke for his annual inspection.

76 BATTLE OF KILLIECRANKIE. On the 27th July 1689 the first of a series of Jacobite battles took place on the British mainland. The Jacobite Commander with a force of 2,500 highlanders was James Graham of Claverhouse, Viscount Dundee, known as Bonnie Dundee to his supporters. The commander of the government army, another

Scot, Hugh McKay of Scourie had a force of 4,000 men. In 20 minutes 2,000 government troops were dead and 600 highlanders. It was a decisive victory for the Jacobite cause, but disastrously their

leader Bonnie Dundee was killed. Each year the battle is commemorated by walks in traditional dress. The National Trust of Scotland Killiecrankie Visitor Centre has information and regular re-enactments of the battle.

84 RANNOCH & TUMMEL As you head north from Aberfeldy or west from Pitlochry, you will enter a different landscape – a remote part of Highland Perthshire where you wind your way along lochs, through forests and below mountain peaks. When you think you can go no further, you will arrive in one of our two villages, Tummel Bridge and Kinloch Rannoch, real Scottish communities nestling in the foothills of Schiehallion’s peak.

THE FALLS OF BRUAR. Long have the Falls drawn visitors - travellers, poets, artists, nobility and royalty - to view the wild grandeur of the Falls and their surroundings. In 1787, Robert Burns wrote a poem pleading with the Duke of Atholl to plant its banks with trees. Only after Burns’ death in 1796 did the Duke plant 60,000 larch and Scotch pines. In 1844, the mature trees enchanted Queen Victoria and Prince Albert on their visit. The well marked route is just over one mile long. Open all year. North of Pitlochry on B8079.

9 miles in length (one way). Leave your car at Rannoch Station and take the train to Corrour the next stop up the line to Fort William (approx 10 mins). Corrour is the most remote railway station in Scotland, on the northern edge of Rannoch Moor, 10 miles at least from the nearest tarmac road. Once at Corrour, walk eastwards on the track to the Youth Hostel

at the southern end of Loch Ossian. Continue, past the Hostel and along to the east of Loch Ossian veering away from the loch and cutting east. Continue along the path, to the B846, turn right along this road for 1.25 miles to Rannoch station. Make sure you are properly prepared with good all weather clothing, footwear, food and an OS Map or good route guide for an enjoyable day out.

STRUAN BRIDGES. Nowhere else will you see a road bridge crossing over a river and a railway bridge crossing over both road bridge and river. The road bridge is a single arch stone bridge built in the 2nd half of the 18C. The railway bridge is a stone viaduct across the River Garry. The railway line was completed in 1863, a second rail viaduct was built in 1899. This became known as The Highland Railway.

PICTISH STONE IN STRUAN CHURCH. Faint outlines of the walls of the medieval church are situated south of the present church (built in 1827-28 and designed by Charles Sim). A superb example of a Pictish decorated stone can be seen beside the altar. The stone is believed to be from the early medieval period which shows that Struan is a very old site of worship.

NATIONAL CYCLE NETWORK. Route 7 passes through Blair Atholl and Calvine on its way from Glasgow to Inverness avoiding the A9 on a specially constructed cycle path. The features at both Calvine and Dalwhinnie junctions represent ‘stretched drum skins’ set in a Highland landscape. The ‘white drums’ are made from cannel coal and quartz. North of Calvine is the dramatic Drumochter Pass to Dalwhinnie.

CLIMB TO THE CENTRE OF SCOTLAND. Schiehallion, at 1083 metres, is often said to lie at the centre of Scotland. A popular Munro to “bag”, with an abundance of nature to discover on the way to the summit, with the most stunning views of Rannoch and Tummel. It also played its part in history when Maskelyne used it in an experiment to help calculate the mass of the Earth back in 1774. But for those who just enjoy myths and stories, it is more fondly known as the Fairy Mountain.

GLEN TILT. One of the most beautiful glens in Scotland. Popular with walkers and cyclists all year round. There are a number of Cycle and walking route maps that can be obtained from the Blair Atholl Information Hub.It was here in Glen Tilt, in 1785 that James

Hutton found evidence at a waterfall just behind Forest Lodge, that granite formed

from cooling of moltenrock, and not as had previously thought was formed as a result precipitation out of water . On account of this work Hutton is credited helping to establish the basis of modern geology. At the very top of Glen Tilt some 14 miles is the Falls of Tarf where the Tarf river joins the Allt Garbh Buidhe to make the River Tilt.

THE CLAN TRAIL. Follow the posted route around Loch Rannoch to find out about the Clans who used to live in the glen. Hard to imagine, as the glen is so tranquil, that it wasn’t so quiet in the past! Leaflets available at The Country Store to tell you more about our history.CARIE WOODS Whatever the weather, Carie Woods on South Loch Rannoch, are a perfect place to walk. With marked routes, enjoy a picnic at the end next to the burn. Managed by the Forestry Commission.

TOMPHUBIL LIME KILN ‘Hill of the People’. Lime transformed agriculture in the Highlands, once it was discovered its application to the acid Highland soil improved it, increasing yields three-fold in some areas. This kiln was constructed circa 1865 and has been preserved with an explanation plaque. Travelling through the Highlands, you will see many of these old kilns. Car park. Open all year. Free entry. Beside the road on B846 between Tummel Bridge and Aberfeldy.
