As summer draws to a close, and vacations quickly become distant memories, so the conference season kicks into gear again. Septem-ber is always full, with a slow decline up to the end of November. Most conference organisers consider the season is dead by the first week in December, but this year the 4th International Conference on Nanotechnology and Biosensors in Paris, France will be held on 20 - 21 December. I’ve never been in Paris in December, so perhaps near to Christmas it is a magical place. I have been to a Christmas market in Nuremberg, and with snow falling it was like something in a fairy tale.

For the next six months, we will be working hard on developing Sensors in Medicine 2014. Expect to hear from us on a fairly fre-quent basis - we are actively soliciting papers, poster, exhibitors and will open for delegate registration in September. Early bird discounts until 31 December. In 2014 the conference will move to the Royal Geographic Society conference centre in South Kensington, partly because the Wellcome Collection is closed for renovation, but more importantly because we can accommodate more exhibitors and delegates,

Look forward to seeing you next year, if not before.

Kind regards

Digital Health Days was a two-day event held at Stock-holmsmässan on 21 and 22 August 2013 and was attend-ed by HRH Prince Daniel and the Mayor of Stockholm. The event was organised by Stockholm Science City and chaired by the serial entre-preneur, Ola Ahlvarsson. It comprised a series of short seminars, panel discussions and hands-on demonstrations and explored the burgeoning interface between sen-sors, mobile communications, apps and self care.

The plenary speakers, including Anthony Turner from the Biosen-sors and Bioelectronics Centre at LiU, painted a picture of the future where aids to the maintenance of wellbeing are available 24/7 via mobile phones and other portable devices. The presenters were united in their vision of a future where healthcare, advice and treatment are delivered personally, in an individually tailored fashion, at home, in the workplace or anywhere at your convenience. This future vision will demand a complete restructuring of the current national systems and will be driven by the consumers. Governments and insurers will focus increasingly on outcomes with evidence-based reimbursement, while patients will have the opportunity to use and supplement their per-sonal healthcare records with online commercial products to deliver the comprehensive care and support they deserve.

One speaker, Sara Riggare, spoke powerfully about patient empow-erment. A Parkinson’s Disease sufferer, she talked of the time when she can have 8 760 hours of support per year to manage her disease instead of the 2 hours she currently gets from state healthcare.

Biosensors were seen as the key to unlocking the biochemical in-formation necessary to enable this vision and must be effectively interfaced with mobile information technology. Such decentralised diagnostics will completely change the current paradigm. Ola Ahlvars-son suggested that in the not too distant future, we will laugh at how foolish we were to take time off work to stand in line at a hospital for diagnostic tests and then to have to go back another day to find out what treatment might be suitable.

First human tests of new biosensor that warns when athletes are about to ‘hit the wall’Professor Joseph Wang and col-leagues at UC San Diego have tested a new biosensor, applied to the human skin like a temporary tattoo, which can alert maratho-ners, competitive bikers and other “extreme” athletes that they’re about to “bonk,” or “hit the wall.” The sensor monitors lactate, a form of lactic acid released in sweat. “Electrochemical Tattoo Biosensors for Real-Time Noninvasive Lactate Monitoring in Human Perspiration” reported in Analytical Chemistry

The UK Technology Strategy Board, a unit of the Department for Busi-ness, Industry and Skills, has announced that it will form a Diagnostics for Stratification Catapult.

UK Catapults are technology innovation centres modelled on Germa-ny’s Fraunhofer Centres. The intention is to form a network of world-leading technology and innovation centres which will help business transform ideas into new products and services. There are currently 7 such centres: high value manufacturing; cell therapy; off-shore renew-able energy; satellite applications; connected digital economy; future cities; transport systems.

Funding for the new centre will come from an additional £185m awarded to the TSB in the last spending review. The centre will look at developing diagnostics to be used within stratified medicine to identify patients for treatment. A TSB spokesman said that the catapult would “act as a rallying point to enable linkages between biopharma, diagnostics and healthcare systems,” and said that the catapult would help businesses tap into stratified medicine. A consultation exercise will begin later this year to assist in planning the new centre.

Stratified medicine is the concept of personalising medical care, so drug therapy is targetted at patients who will most beenfit. It requires links between biopharma and diagnostic companies, a need which is slowly being recognised but is to a large extent not yet in place.

Readers of Sensor100 will recall that we lead an effort in early 2012 to convince the TSB of a need for a Sensor Catapult, which was ulti-mately unsuccessful. Hopefully the new centre will acknowledge the place of bio-sensors in companion diagnostics.
