Sin’s slow recovery As the Club president I have felt very guilty about not leading or doing TEC on any rides or even being able to attend and support the members who give up their time to ensure that others have a good run through our wonderful countryside. Progress is happening. I have now gone on two short 30 minutes rides (to work and back) without too much pain the next day. I am feeling encouraged that I will soon be out there having a wonderful time with the great friends I have here in the club. My bike has been very neglected but just as spring arrives I am getting ready to mount my trusty steed and take off through the hills again. We have been really struggling to get members to commit to leading rides and doing TEC. In August we had a disastrous turn out for the social run that Dennis was running. Only Dennis showed up!! He decided that it was too nice not do it so off he went on his own for the run. There may have been some confusion as to when the meeting start was but the email clearly stated the time of departure from the Narrogin Inn. My thoughts are the same as what I have been thinking for about 6 months now. Our club membership has changed and with the changing of the work place it is not conducive to lots of time commitments. With so many shift workers, self employed and FIFO members, we are really struggling to get commitments from people to do and attend the runs. The difficulty of getting 4 people to do runs every month is very problematic. My thoughts are that perhaps we should suspend the social runs for a few months and see how well attended the normal club runs are. Perhaps with only one opportunity a month to ride with the club, more people will be able to make the effort and commitment , as it is only once a month then. Having said that, Malcolm has ten people going to Koorda for the weekend. Maybe where we go makes a big difference to attendance? Something for us all to think about and discuss. We are always open to suggestions and feed back. Cheers Dancer

Each club ride starts as two members step up as Ride Leader and Tail End Charlie. Unless you’ve already organised a ride you will know that there’s not much to it, but for those concerned about trying it, the following should help you understand

the finer details of

Organising a Ride. Plan the route. The first step for most ride organisers will be maps and a destination idea. You most likely have an idea of the full distance your ride will travel and will have decided already if you intend the ride to be an overnighter. Using your maps you can draft track notes or a ride route that you will follow on the pre-ride. You can add up the kilometres of each leg of the trip and start to identify potential toilet stops, fuel and food stops. A good guide distance for a leg stretch of any description is about 100km but you can vary this to fit in with your ride. Go on a pre-ride. This is to check the route you’ve chosen actually works. It is an opportunity to improve your track notes with distances and times between stops, discover points of interest, photo opportunities or good break spots and to become familiar with the road junctions you will be using. Judge travel times based on what the TEC will be able to do on the day and fuel stops to account for the smallest range, e.g. 180km. The pre-ride can be an ideal time to stop and take photos to include with a few more taken on the club ride day. On your pre-ride remember to check if the café you visit will be open on a Sunday and get a phone number to call through a booking (e.g. for 10) on the day of the ride if you think it might get busy. Inform the Tour Master. Rewrite your track notes and forward it to the Tour Master who uses this information to ensure consecutive rides aren’t coincidentally travelling the same route. The Tour Master may need to arrange a fill-in Leader or TEC for the ride at short notice if for any reason one cannot make it. Inform the Editor. Create a flier for your ride and forward it to the magazine editor by the submissions cut-off date, Wednesday one week prior to the club meeting. An A4 page is best, including all the information members will need to attend your ride. You may keep the route secret if you wish or you can specify as much information as you like. Importantly, you must include the start location, start time and date, total distance to be covered and identify Ride Leader and TEC. At the meeting. Receive the running sheet from the Secretary. Receive the TEC bag from the previous rides TEC. During the Tour Master report tell the members about your ride and encourage them to join you, fill them in on any last minute information they might need to know and anything different to what you see printed in the magazine. You might wish to get an indication of the number of people going on your ride or you might need to get firm numbers to make a booking for accommodation if that is your ride.

September 2013 Open Road Motorcycle Touring Club Page 7

On the day. Be on time for your ride, if you’ve stated “arrive 8am for 8.30 departure” then one of the organisers should be there by 8am sharp. Ensure Tail End Charlie has brought the TEC bag just in case mechanical or first aid situations arise during the ride. Invite visitors to include their email address on the running sheet so that we can follow up and invite them to come along on future rides. Emergency contact numbers for everybody should be recorded. For this reason the running sheet would best ride with the TEC. The Club Riot Act must be read aloud at the start of the ride, it is printed on the back of the running sheet. If you need to make a booking, call before you leave to confirm numbers. Delays. The Tail End Charlie is most likely to catch up to an incident before the Ride Leader is made aware. The TEC has the bag containing mechanical and first aid equipment although the TEC themselves may not know how to use it. For anything but the shortest delays it is usually best to despatch a rider to inform those waiting ahead, including the ride leader. Depending on the situation, the ride may need to separate to make sure no rider is left stranded alone. Following the ride. As soon as possible after the ride the running sheet should be posted in the envelope provided so that the Secretary can update the points table for the magazine. Any photos you’ve taken should be forwarded to the Editor so that they may be included in the photo gallery on the club web site. If you choose to write a report you can insert your pictures into your article or forward them separately for the Editor to choose. General ride information. Monthly Club Run. This can be hundreds of kilometres in a day, a midnight ride, camping or overnight motel, or perhaps a few nights away on the border run. Anything that you would class as touring the open road on a motorcycle. The ride can be to a particular destination or event or just for the enjoyment of the road. If you are planning an overnighter investigate contact details for camping grounds, motels or other accommodation and suggest restaurants or café meal options. If your trip involves camping only, make sure everybody knows where your last opportunity for supplies will be, e.g. bottle-shop. Social Ride. Intended to be shorter and to provide more social interaction than the monthly Club Run. Preferably the social ride will be arranged to attend some social event or activity. Families can be invited to meet at the destination of the social event so it’s not only for the riders. The ride part should be kept quite short, 100-150km return will usually suffice. Previous examples of Social Rides include a barbeque at the beach, a visit to the aviation museum at Jandakot and Xmas in July at Serpentine.

Re: The August meeting, The non attendance of Peter and his subsequent ** written remarks concerning the following:-

Hi M'Lud. The prisoner will be quiet and show respect.

In the absence of a discussion directly with Peter and as it is on the ** record here is my reply also for the record. Enjoy!

Subject: The cold July breakfast Run to Cuballing.

Charges against the defendant are. That one Dennis Newland being of not so sound body at the time did (1) unlawfully forget to bring the run sheet. I.e. Name address and relevant telephone numbers of attendees.

Oh my God I have sinned.

Silence in the court

(2) Did hereby evade his responsibility to verbally engage the said attendees for the purpose of a formal reading of the Riot Act. ORMTC Clause No 3,000,0013 Circa Late 20th century of thereabouts.

We hereby refer to the written evidence supplied by one Petulant Pete and his lecture (on the run) advising that the defendant was to be fined with a loss of 1999 points (jeez only one left)and his subsequent letter/Ticket formally presented to the meeting as evidence of said infroingements. Look at me look at me.

Silence in the court. And who is representing the defendant?

We are M'Lud. Mrrss Lilly Langtrey and Co female Barristers (of dubious credentials) often engaged by the rich and famous in lawful legal intercourse to hereby rebut any implication of alleged wrong doings. no matter how long it takes (and we charge by the hour) we will establish our clients innocence.

M'Lud Mitigating evidence for the defence in written form is hereby presented in reply to said charges I.e. the officiating Officers written presentation to the Chair Person at the regular Monthly discourse of the O-rmtc.

Firstly Our client Had been very sick with a very sad malady for some three days before the said run and I must also confirm that he was looking determined but very poorly when he left our premises at 4:30am that same morning. Further I am reliably informed that he remained that way for a further eight days well after the extremely cold but rapid transit to other licensed premises (purpose unknown) some 200 kilometres away. Initially he admitted he was hesitant about actually going on the said run albeit after the ingestion of various pills and anti-histamines and a number of injections, (which we were amazed he accomplished with his hands so shaky and all) albeit unlike some petty whinging of others and he thinks he really enjoyed the run. We also feel that His loyalty and his selfless valour in not wishing to add to the duties of his stand in (Ivan) is well in character with our intimate but short term assessment of his consummate efforts and Needs to be taken in full account when considering your verdict.

Further and considering his ailments, the early call at 7:25 that morning and his eagerness to be 10 miles away for the 07:30 departure of the ride (albeit he almost forgot about the bill) He informs us that it was no inconvenience as he loves the cold rides more than the summer jaunt and has been a motorcyclist for almost 68 years. I.e. Ridden in snow storms and freezing weather at 2am on a regular weekly basis ...blah blah. However at 74 Yrs of age he admits he just can't take the heat any-more...Blah Blah. However on this occasion and unlike others he was dressed for the day and didn't feel cold in any way and believe it or not he also promised to return the mink he was found wearing by the patrol officer.

September 2013 Open Road Motorcycle Touring Club Page 11

Alternatively Arriving at the Narrogin Inne only shortly before the departure time and being hardly in the most organised frame of mind we left and headed towards the North Bannister Road house. At that juncture there were several minor whinges concerning the cold as people gathered around a lovely warming fire, However their complaints were mild compared to Peter who said he thought he would go home. So rather than demoralise the rest of the contingent I suggested that maybe if he felt that way maybe that is what he should do. I know it must be awkward to realise that a scooter offers far more protection than a real naked motorcycle. But cold weather demands a different approach and sensible preparation and that is why for me it provides a little more adventure against the elements than a summers blast. I find it difficult to comprehend the “major” fault of forgetting a piece of paper to register those that attended when it was written down along with emergency phone numbers on a separate sheet by Ivan anyway. Ergo one typed one written but info gathering remembered same as before. I also find it difficult to understand why Peter as a responsible committee member failed to caution us, or take us up, or remind us that the Riot act had not been read. Yet still joined us on the run regardless. That would seem to me to be a far worse dereliction of duty by a committee member than my own fazed condition of the day actually missed. After I had postured that Peter should go home I was told that I would be fined for any or all of the above offences. In my view and at the time this seemed to be more of a retaliatory statement and one taken belatedly to cover his own irresponsibility which, had it been implemented before departure would have seemed more impartial, more correct and ultimately saved all this bull S###. In my view and having reminded quite a few run leaders over the years of the need to impress the riding rules on those taking part, I could say that Peter should be fined for allowing the ride to proceed. No doubt he could say that it was not his responsibility but it is, (more so as a committee member) but nevertheless as it is with all of us if some aspect of safety is missing. Further to this and from my memory of the situation fines were introduced not so much as a fine but rather as a means of raising money in what was then a very lean time.

How we ever survived in the 20 (for me) years before their introduction (which I opposed) and in my view were the better for it. Officialdom and possibly pettiness has reared its ugly head. And we already get enough of that from the relevant authorities without introducing it into a motorcycling social club. With each rider backing up the implementation of our various safety requirements we have managed thus far. To belatedly want to introduce fines after the event is a bit like getting a ticket from a Multinova it produces nothing in terms of safety at the time of the infringement and lets you proceed without any warning or timely rectification of the offence. Seriously what purpose does it serve to be advised of this safety issue at a later date?? In my view this situation can lose impartiality if we become a little sanctimonious and fail to admit our own failure (as in this case). Maybe fines were a good idea at the time and maybe it served its purpose for a while, but that time is passed and it should be revoked.

On a personal note We never needed a policeman in the club before and in my view we don’t need one now. No matter how small the fine it is still open to abuse and I would much rather make an additional donation out of deference to the club needs rather than gather this small mount of money and the niggling annoyance it creates.
