BOOK ONE SUMMARY Agamemnon (Ag.) has taken the daughter of
Chryses as a war prize. Chryses, a priest of Apollo, offers Ag. a great treasure
for the return of his daughter, but Ag. refuses Chryses enlists the aid of enraged Apollo to bring a
plague upon the Greeks The plague is to be removed only when Cryses’
daughter is returned, but Ag. refuses to comply with the ultimatum
Achilles (Ach.) and the seer convince Ag. To return the hostage; Ag. demands that Achilles give him his war prize, Briseis Ach. then appeals to his mother, the sea-goddess
Thetis, to ask Zeus to aid the Trojans against the Greeks
