Telespazio, a joint venture between Finmeccanica (67%) and Thales (33%), is one of the

world’s leading players in satellite services. The Rome-based company has around 2000

staff, a network of four space centres and 25 sites spread all over the world. These notably

include the Fucino Space Centre, which has more than 100 operational antennas and is the

largest satellite telecommunications centre for commercial use in the world. Telespazio also

operates a fleet of mobile units in Italy and abroad.

Telespazio is a leading company in sectors that are becoming increasingly important for

institutions, companies and the public: satellite operation, Earth observation, satellite navi-

gation and localisation, integrated telecommunications and scientific programmes. In all

these activities, Telespazio can draw on its excellent experience at the highest level, born

out of the technological expertise it has acquired in almost 50 years of activity, the infra-

structure it manages and its involvement in important space programmes, such as Galileo,

EGNOS, GMES, COSMO-SkyMed, SICRAL and Göktürk.

Telespazio can count on numerous subsidiaries worldwide. Specifically, it is present in

France with Telespazio France, Fileas and associate company Novacom, in Germany with

Telespazio Deutschland and GAF, in Spain with Aurensis, in Hungary with Telespazio Hungary

and in Romania with Rartel. Telespazio has consolidated its presence in South America with

Telespazio Brasil and Telespazio Argentina. It operates in the US via Telespazio North

America. In Italy, its main subsidiary is e-GEOS, a company created in partnership with the

Italian Space Agency.

Telespazio responds to new demands in the satellite services market by producing

innovative ideas and new solutions, and is involved in various international projects. Today,

more than ever, the company is a true innovator, transforming what were once just possibilities

into real services available to an ever larger public.

Every satellite is under control with Telespazio.

Telespazio is one of the main players in the management

and control of satellites in orbit. Through one of the largest

space centres in the world in Fucino and a global and integrated

network of ground stations and control rooms, the company

provides services to space agencies and the main private and

public international operators of the sector, offering solutions

including design, development, and the integration and operation

of ground-based operations, the management of launch services

and control throughout satellites’ operational life. Telespazio

has expanded the range of services provided by its subsidiaries

Telespazio France, which is based in Toulouse and Kourou

(French Guiana), and Telespazio Deutschland, headquartered

in Munich. Telespazio France specialises in support services

for space launches, and supports the CNES and Arianespace

missions. Telespazio Deutschland, which specialises in services

for operators in the space sector, operates at DLR’s control

centres in Oberpfaffenhofen and Weilheim, and at the ESA

and Eumetsat centre in Darmstadt.

Always in touchin a changing world.

With its long track record in the satellite telecommunications

sector, and thanks to a portfolio of cutting-edge products

and services, Telespazio offers its clients secure, reliable

and globally available solutions. The company designs, builds

and manages communications networks capable of integrating

satellite and ground-based infrastructure, with the aim

of responding effectively to the needs of the business and

institutional markets, media and broadcast sectors, and global

telecommunications operators. Telespazio offers dedicated

services for the oil and gas, transport and navigation markets,

implementing fixed-line and mobile broadband solutions in Italy

and abroad. It provides innovative solutions for applications and

services in the fields of civil protection and security, telemedicine,

e-government and distance learning. Furthermore, Telespazio

is the Italian market leader and a major European player in radio

and television broadcasting, thanks to its facilities at the space

centres in Fucino and Lario (Como), its fleet of vehicles

and the equipment it installs and manages at clients’ premises.

Telespazio plays a leading role in the main international Earth

observation programmes. These include GMES, the European

programme that will provide monitoring services for territorial

security and defence, and COSMO-SkyMed, the Italian Space

Agency and Ministry of Defence programme based on a

constellation of four radar satellites that can operate in any

atmospheric conditions. Telespazio will also provide as prime

contractor the Göktürk satellite system for the Turkish Ministry

of Defence, consisting of a high-resolution optical satellite, the

ground segment, the launch service and a satellite assembly,

integration and test center.

Through Italian subsidiary e-GEOS, with Aurensis in Spain and

GAF in Germany, Telespazio carries out all activities relating to

the Earth observation market, from gathering and processing

satellite data to developing and selling software and products.

It provides services to public institutions and companies for the

study and control of land, civil protection, the prevention and

management of natural risks, cartography and agricultural

applications. e-GEOS is a leading international operator, with an

integrated range of application solutions and value-added

services, based on radar and very high resolution optical data.

The eyes to watch the Earth, the tools to protect it.

Providing safe pointsof reference for the Earth.

Telespazio is Finmeccanica’s key operator in satellite navigation

and localisation services, a role confirmed by its participation

in EGNOS (European Geostationary Navigation Overlay System)

and Galileo, the European satellite navigation programme that

will see the launch of 30 satellites.

One of the two control centres that will manage this constellation

has been built at the Fucino Space Centre. Telespazio also

supplied the launch services from Fucino, and is currently taking

part in the GIOVE-B mission, developed by ESA for the in-orbit

validation (IOV) of the technological solutions that will be used

on board the Galileo satellites.

Furthermore, the company will supply the in-orbit operational

and integrated logistics services for the IOV phase of the Galileo

programme, when the first four operational satellites of the

constellation are launched. Telespazio is helping to create

the Galileo Test Range in Rome – the technological infrastructure

that will support the Galileo system, applications and equipment

– and is co-ordinating the development of initiatives

and experimental projects at European level in the field

of aerial navigation and monitoring services for hazardous

goods tracking and tracing.

Telespazio, which in 2009 incorporated the MARS Center

in Naples, carries out experiments on board the International

Space Station (ISS), ranging from the integration of payloads to

their in-orbit operation, astronaut training and the dissemination

of the scientific data obtained. In this last regard, Telespazio

aims to broaden its expertise by taking part in the European

Union’s scientific and technological research project ULISSE,

whose objective is to assimilate data from the ISS with that from

other microgravity missions. The experiments carried out on the

manned platforms have proved useful for Telespazio in the field

of scientific missions and exploration, especially in the Lunar

and Mars exploration programmes promoted by the European

Space Agency (ESA) and Italian Space Agency (ASI). Finally,

the company plays an active role both in research for direct

exploration missions to NEOs (near-Earth objects), small

celestial bodies at risk of colliding with the Earth, and ESA’s

Space Situational Awareness programme.

Telespazio plays a strategic role in military satellite

communications (Milsatcom) through its participation, as key

partner to the Italian Ministry of Defence, in the SICRAL

programme, a system that ensures interoperability between

defence, law and order and civil emergency agencies, and those

responsible for the management of strategic infrastructure.

For SICRAL 1, the first Italian satellite for military

communications, Telespazio managed the launch and early orbit

phase (LEOP), as well as the design, integration and testing

phases of the ground segment. The success of this mission

prompted the Ministry of Defence to promote new initiatives

financed by public-private partnerships. The new SICRAL 1B

satellite, launched in April 2009, was co-financed by Telespazio,

which will have therefore access to some of the transmission

capacity, allowing the company to offer communications services

to NATO countries and the European and US defence markets.

Telespazio takes part in the SICRAL 2 programme of the Italian

Defence Ministry and the ATHENA-FIDUS programme of ASI

and CNES through similar forms of public-private co-financing.

Explore the future to innovate and learn.

The best defence is communication.
