Welcome to Wingate! Located on the lush rolling campus of Wingate University, The Batte Center serves many roles. It is a not-for-profit arts program, an architectural gem, the cultural heart of the campus and Union County’s home for the arts since 1999.

Filled with innovation, artistry, and legends of country and soul, the 2014-15 Batte Center Season is shaping up to be our best yet. The season kicks off with country music favorite Clint Black and is quickly followed by two of the best bluegrass bands today – The Del McCoury Band and Hot Rize. Families looking for programs that entertain folks of all ages will delight in our engaging and affordable Family Friendly Events.

As you look through this brochure, you may see some unfamiliar names. I invite you to check them out for yourself. Visit our website which is a virtual goodybag packed with videos, music, and news. Audiences can be swept away by the passion and percussion of Flamenco Vivo, enchanted by the classic tales and large-scale illuminated body puppets of Lightwire Theatre or transported to the past by the music and stories of the Civil War. Children of ALL ages can rock out with one of the ‘all-stars” of the indie family music scene, Justin Roberts and the Not Ready for Naptime Players. You may just discover your newest favorite artist this season at The Batte.

In addition to The Batte Season of events, Wingate University departments can be counted on to sponsor exceptional events throughout the year that include distinguished authors and speakers, choral and wind concerts, gallery openings, theatre readings and more. Wingate’s performance spaces annually host 800+ events so you can be confident there’s something for everyone at The Batte.

It takes so many hands to manage a program this busy. We are grateful for the many talented Wingate students and staff that are hard at work behind the scenes bringing the arts to life on campus. We are also grateful for our Sponsors and Members whose generous support has allowed The Batte to better serve our community.

We hope you will join us this season at The Batte!

Laura Kratt, Director of Cultural Events

It’s a legendary double-bill you won’t want to miss! The Del McCoury Band performs original and traditional compositions with “ferocious, purebred musicianship” (USA Today). Holding 30+ IBMA awards (that’s 9 for Entertainer of the Year!) and multiple Grammy awards, they’re the most honored group in bluegrass history.

As IBMA’s first Entertainer of the Year, Hot Rize (Tim O’Brien, Pete Wernick, Nick Forster and Bryan Sutton) has astounded the bluegrass world with their fresh approach to

traditional music since 1978. Known for their powerful original songs, tight-as-a-drum ensemble playing, and dynamic stage show, they will play favorites as well as songs from their new CD scheduled for a fall release. They are “the great modern bluegrass band,” says Steve Martin.

“I don’t believe I’ve met anyone quitelike Bobby in the ability to understandthe soul of American music.”

— Ken Burns, filmmaker

Wearing the clothes and playing musical instruments of the period, Bobby explores the stories of both the North and South through the music they loved. They tell of sweethearts and families left behind, fallen comrades, the hope of going home, and the pride, bravery, and patriotism of the volunteers who answered their country’s call.
