Welcome to Greece!

Situated between the beautiful shores of Lake Ontario and the historic Erie Canal is the

Town of Greece – Monroe County’s largest town. Over 96,000 residents call Greece home and make it a diverse, welcoming community. In a community of this size you will always find

something happening and plenty of opportunities to enjoy life!

There are many places to live, but what determines whether someplace has a real sense of community? The people who live there. They make or break the perception of an area and we think Greece has a tremendous sense of community.

The Chamber is active in our community not only for our business members but for residents as well. Our Outdoors Committee raised money to commission a historical set of murals that have been installed at Henpeck Park along the Erie Canal here in Greece. They are also active in promoting the trails and waterways in our community. We also sponsor the Race on the Ridge 5K each fall as a way to raise funds for

some great local charitable organizations. This year we will hold our 4th Annual Taste of the Town (last Sunday in August) where hundreds of people turn out to taste some delicious offerings from our local restaurant vendors. We also hold a very successful Health Fair in February each year.

There are many other organizations who work hard to give back to our area. Two Doors Community Resource Center, located in the Dewey – Stone neighborhood helps out local children with an active after school tutoring program. The Greece Rotary Club annually raises tens of thousands of dollars at their annual Ziti Dinner to give to local children’s programs, events and organizations. The Greece Kiwanis Club holds a special Fishing Derby each year for local special needs children.

These are just a few examples of how you will see people in our Town living and helping those around them. We hope that you enjoy your time here in Greece. We think you will agree that it is a great place to live, work, and play.

Sincerely,The Greece Chamber StaffGreece Chamber of Commerce

As newly elected Greece Town Supervisor, it is a pleasure to welcome you to the

latest edition of the Greece Community Guide. The Community Guide contains information that you will find to be very useful.

I encourage all residents take advantage of everything our community has to offer; from our beautiful neighborhoods, parks and trails to our shopping and commercial areas. I invite you to visit the Greece Town Campus regularly for the various community events we offer our residents. These programs include community clean up events such as Operation Clean Sweep, Pickleball Tournaments at the Community and Senior Center, and the Old Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration. As Supervisor, I take a great deal of pride in

our Town and Town Government. Please feel free to contact me at 225-2000, visit us on our website at www.greeceny.gov, or follow us on twitter using the handle @GreeceTown. Together, we will continue the tradition of making Greece a great place to live, work and raise a family.

Sincerely,

SupervisorTown of Greece

As the largest suburban Chamber in Monroe County, the Greece

Chamber offers a diverse variety of programs, benefits and events designed to assist local businesses. The Chamber currently has 800 business members from all over Monroe County and is continuing to grow and expand their services.

They offer health, dental and vision insurance to many area businesses and individuals. In addition, they offer discounts on payroll and credit card processing, office supplies, meeting room rental and advertising. From July 2013 through June 2014 the Chamber has offered 120+ events maximizing the amount of connections their members can make. One example is The Chamber’s First Friday Networking Breakfast, held the first Friday of each month, is free to attend and held at various member business locations is one example. The Small Business

Success Series / Tech Tuesday training series held monthly for a very nominal fee is another. The organization is an advocate for businesses on a legislative level by being part of the Unshackle Upstate movement as well as hosting their local elected officials for the Eggs & Issues breakfast series. A “Young Entrepreneurs Academy” for high school students from Greece, Hilton and Spencerport schools is a program that offers area high school students the educational opportunity to learn about what it takes to own and run your own business. Graduates of this program finish as CEOs of their business with their own DBA.

Leadership Greece is a cornerstone program for the Chamber. Each year this program takes 10-20 established, emerging or future local leaders and gives them in depth leadership training

History of Greece, NYEARLY HISTORYIn the early 1300s, Algonquin Indians began settling along the shores of Lake Ontario, near its bays and ponds and in the Genesee Valley. As their civilizations grew and the Seneca joined the Iroquois League, paths through the woods became main thoroughfares, many of which are still in use today. According to local historians, many of the main roads in town, including parts of Ridge Road, Long Pond Road and Dewey Avenue, were constructed along these paths.

The first settlers to the area, arriving in the 1790s, were William Hinchey, a Revolutionary War veteran, and James Latta, a merchant seaman. Though no documentation exists, it is believed that the Latta family was heavily involved with the famed “Underground Railroad”. Slaves seeking freedom in Canada were reportedly hidden in Samuel Latta’s warehouse in Charlotte where they awaited transportation across the Lake.

THE OFFICIAL BEGINNINGThe Town of Greece was incorporated in 1822. It was named after the country of Greece as a show of support for the Greek people who fought for their independence from Turkish rule. The name is also a tribute to this old-world nation – a symbol of intellectual and athletic excellence.

The Town of Greece was formed from the northern part of the town of Gates. In 1823, expansion of the Erie Canal resulted in the development of the southern part of town. Mason workers came from Europe to help build the canal and often settled here. Many of them built cobblestone houses, some of which still stand today.

Throughout the 1800s, the local economy centered on agriculture. Many of the beautiful farmhouses that were built during this period have been converted for commercial use. The Upton-Paine house, now Ridgemont Country Club, is one such home. The Greece Historical Society currently occupies the charming Larkin-

Beattie-Howe house built in the 1850’s. (Gordon Howe, former Greece Supervisor, raised his family there.)

CHARLOTTEThe history of Greece would not be complete without mentioning Charlotte. Incorporated as a village in 1869, Charlotte was the center of the community for many years. Its quaint lighthouse has been pictured in the town seal since its inception.

In the early 1900s, the Manitou Trolley carried summer vacationers to the many resort hotels along the shore of Lake Ontario. It cost only a nickel to go from Charlotte to Manitou Beach, crossing Braddocks Bay on a wooden trestle. In 1916, Charlotte was annexed from Greece to become the 23rd Ward of the City of Rochester.

www.GreeceChamber.org | Greece Chamber of Commerce | 2014 - 2015 Greece Community Guide 7

NEW BEGINNINGSThe turn of the century brought about changes which shifted the economic focus from agriculture to industry. Photography magnate George Eastman opened the first Kodak plant in 1891. Kodak became the largest employer in the area, and its success fueled the Town’s growth. Further economic development was also spurred by local grocers: brothers John and Walter Wegman founded Wegmans Food Markets in 1931. Wegmans has been expanding ever since and is recognized as one of the country’s premier grocery operations.

The shift from agriculture to industry was also a result of devastating crop losses in 1934. An unusually severe freeze that winter destroyed many orchards. Additionally, World War II brought about the building of more industrial plants to support the war effort. Post-war peace combined with a swell in population throughout the late 1940s and 50s, led to even more industrialization and commercialization, especially along Ridge Road.

Greece Olympia, the town’s first high school, was built in the 1960s. With the town’s population approaching 75,000 in 1970, many new shopping plazas and churches were formed. Park Ridge Hospital was built in 1975 on Long Pond Road, and the Historical Center opened on English Road in 1978.

RECENT HISTORYOne of the most important new developments was in 1983 with the construction of the I-390 highway running north from Ridge Road to the Lake Ontario Parkway. Another remarkable development was the formation of The Mall at Greece Ridge in 1994. It was formed when Greece Towne Mall and Long Ridge Mall were connected, making it one of the largest shopping malls in the northeastern United States.

In 1997, the town government moved to its new location on Vince Tofany Boulevard and the old town hall on Ridge Road was demolished as part of the redevelopment of Ridge

Road. The original cupola from the old town hall was saved and is now part of the Greece Historical Center and Museum in the old Larkin-Beattie-Howe house, now on Long Pond Road.

In 2008 a major reconstruction of the West Ridge Road corridor was completed, improving the flow of traffic for over 40,000 vehicles daily.

Please take time to visit the Greece Historical Center and Museum at 595 Long Pond Road. For more information, please call 225-7221.

In between you will fi nd a host of planned developments that offer safe neighborhoods, attractive homes and a great community.

The housing market in Greece has remained strong despite the national economy. Houses here are priced affordably with a lot to offer home buyers. Young families are often attracted to Greece because of the multitude of youth-oriented activities that are offered. The Greece Police

Department and four local fi re departments provide exceptional public safety services to the area.

Greece also has an extensive amount of senior citizen housing available for rent. Those range from independent living condos, such as The Village at Mill Landing, to apartments with a shared eating space. There are units available for low-income seniors as well. Senior housing is a growing market in Greece.

There are also many apartments and townhouses available for rent throughout Greece. They range from a studio all the way up to a fi ve bedroom townhouse. For more information on apartments, please visit the Chamber’s website at www.greecechamber.org.

Greece, N.Y. is home to the very fi rst dog park in Monroe County. The Greece Canal Dog Park opened in Greece

Canal Ponds Park in October of 2009. With over 1,100 dogs registered to use the park it is quite obvious that dogs and dog owners alike are really enjoying it.

The park provides a one acre area, with a crushed limestone dust surface that is fully fenced, providing an unleashed environment for dogs to run, play and socialize. Two-thirds of the park is dedicated to large dogs while the other one-third is open to small dogs. The double gated entry system provides a safe area for unleashing and leashing the pet.

The park is self patrolled and children under 10 are not permitted in the park. Each dog owner is required to clean up after their dog. A Monroe County Dog Park Permit must beobtained in order to use the facility. There is a small annual fee for the permit. This fee provides revenue for the upkeep and maintenance of the dog park as well as funds to help build future dog parks. Dog owners must provide a valid rabies certifi cate and proof of a New York State Dog License for each dog being registered to use the park before the permit can be issued.

In 2002 Monroe County Legislature approved a dog park for Monroe County with the stipulation that funds to build the park would be raised privately. A group of volunteers worked with companies and elected offi cials with the goal of raising $50,000. The goal was reached in late 2008 and Greece Canal Dog Park opened on October 30th now operated by Monroe County Department of Parks. For information on obtaining aMonroe County Dog Park Permit and/or dog park rules and regulations, call 585-753-PARK or visit www.MonroeCounty.gov/Parks on the Internet.

A New, Interactive Way To Find Real Estate In The Mall!

Today's real estate buyer needs more information on a listing, so Tablets were added for people to pull up the listing for complete information. "The tablets allow us to offer more than what is displayed on the light boards." say Jeff, "You can pull up the adver-tised listing to see all of the photos, map loca-tions, open house times and even contact the agent to see the property. The tablets are updated every night with the lat-est open houses in the area and you can actu-ally refine your search in the advanced search box to pick the specific town

y o u ' r e l o o k -ing for." O p e n h o u s e s are one of those categories that peo-ple like to look at and the new Mall B o a r d has them with map locations,

dates and times.

So what do you do once you have spotted your dream home? Jeff has some sage advise. "When buying a home, you should always work with an agent. A lot of 1st time buyers don't realize that you should be represented when

making such a large pur-chase as a home. Think of it as going into court without representation from a lawyer. You need someone that is looking out for your best inter-ests. Additionally, most people don't realize that a buyer's agent is paid a commission from the seller so there is no cost to the buyer to have rep-resentation."

To aid in your selec-tion of an agent, the Mall Board tablets fea-

ture a sec-tion called The Local Pro. This feature al-

lows a visitor to pick a seasoned agent to work with based upon their experience with a town or neighborhood. "These real estate agents know their specific towns in-side and out because it's where they live and work." says Jeff. It's bet-ter to use a Local Pro is the slogan and they can all be found on the new Mall Board Tablet.

"We are very proud of the new Board and hope that visitors like the improved features as much as we do." said Jeff, "When looking for real estate, please use the new Mall Board as a resource to finding your next home." You can also visit our new website to find listings at www.MallBoard.com.

Happy House Hunting!

or over 20 years, The Mall Board has been staple

at Greece Ridge Center and offered an easy way to find local real estate listings. "When we first installed the kiosk, we threw everything we could at it to make it as unique as possible." says Jeff Haley, President of QuestCom Inc, owner of the Mall Board. "In fact in the early 90s, we ac-tually had touch screens available for people to use which featured inter-active mall directories, real estate listings, movie times and employment classifieds. We even had a mall walkers program that con-v e r t e d laps to miles and kept track for those p e o p l e that set up an ac-c o u n t . " The Mall Board was definitely ahead of its time!

As times changed, it was decided the Board was in need of an upgrade to something more sleek and modern. In February of 2014, a new and improved Mall Board was installed near Critics (through the Chase Bank Entrance) focusing primarily on Local Real Estate List-ings.

Health & SeniorsUnity Health SystemIn 1975, community leaders in Greece saw the rapidly expanding population and wanted to ensure that there was quality health care easily accessible to them. Park Ridge Hospital opened its doors that year in response to the work done by these community visionaries. Park Ridge aligned with St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, NY to form theUnity Health System in 1997.

Today it is a 702-bed health care network with more than 70 locations in Rochester and Monroe County, including Unity Hospital, located on the Unity Park Ridge Health Care Campus in the town of Greece, and the Unity St. Mary’s Campus in Rochester. Key programs include the Joint Replacement Center, Family Birth Place, Spine Center,Diabetes Center, Stroke Center, Brain Injury & Physical Rehabilitation, Chemical Dependency, and Senior Services and Housing. Unity’s ACM Medical Laboratory is a world leader of patient and clinical trials testing, with locations in western New York, York, England, Singapore, Shanghai and India, and lab partnerships across the globe.

Colleges & UniversitiesThe Greater Rochester area is served by many fi rst-class colleges and universities. Greece is conveniently located so as to provide easy access to these institutions such as the University of Rochester, RIT, Roberts Wesleyan College, Nazareth College and St. John Fisher College. In Greece, we are home to Bryant & Stratton College, which is Rochester’s premier two year, regionally accredited college. Bryant & Stratton offers many different degree programs and has a strong history of working closely with the business community. Their new 32,611 sq. ft. campus, on 8.91 acres, at 856 Long Pond Road opened in 2012. The new facility offers Hospitality Management and Hotel / Restaurant Services in addition to its other programs. A medical lab, crime lab, several computer labs as well as a larger library and learning center are some of the new features. For more information you may call the Greece branch at 585-720-0660.

PreschoolsGreece is also home to many different preschools. The Greece Montessori School was founded in 1971 to bring the Montessori approach to preschool to Greece. Many other wonderful preschool facilities such as Doodlebugs and Inspire... can be found in the area. For a complete list of Chamber Member Preschools, please turn to page 34 under the subheading Daycare & Preschools.

Young Entrepreneurs AcademyThe YEA! Program takes students through the entire process of setting up their own, real business. Starting with idea generation and vetting, the students learn how to write a business plan, make a pitch for funding (with real money at stake), and eventually visit the County Clerk’s offi ce to offi cially register their new business! All along the way the students hear from guest speakers, business mentors, investors, and fi eld trip hosts who have tons of useful information to help them along in their journey. The program is open to students in grades 9 – 12 from the Greece, Hilton and Spencerport school districts. This year Noah Corette, CEO of Toller Brand Game Calls and YEA! student from Hilton High School was selected as a fi nalist for the Saunders Scholars Competition in Washington D.C. that was held on June 2014. Contact the Greece Chamber offi ce at 585-227-7272 or visit them on the Internet at www.GreeceChamber.org for more details about this program.

Leadership GreeceLeadership Greece is a 10-month program designed for community leaders and those aspiring to become leaders in the community. Also in 2014, Unity Health System and Rochester General Health System are actively developing plans to bring the two organizations together to form a new, combined health system – one that will thrive in an environment of health care reform. By combining the two complementary systems, it will improve health care quality, service, affordability and access for patients throughout the community. The goal is to boldly position the new organization to become the patient-centered model of health care delivery – sharply focused on managing the health of the community.

Urgent CareGreece is home to two urgent care facilities helping to take the load off the hospital emergency room for non-emergency visits. Rochester Immediate Care opened in the Spring of 2010 on West Ridge Road in a newly remodeled building. Greece Health Center also operates out of a facility on Long Pond Road near Janes Road seeing patients during daytime hours.

Hospice ServicesGreece has two live-in Hospice facilities to serve those patients and families needing end-of-life care. Journey Home was founded to provide compassionate care to terminally ill patients at no cost to them. They receive no insurance reimbursements and subsist solely on the generosity of the community. The Jennifer J. and Elizabeth G. Hildebrant Hospice Center is operated by Lifetime Health on the Unity Hospital Campus. This 11 bed facility was built in 2008 to embody the hospice promise of comfort and dignity at the end of life.

Senior Living & CareGreece has many types of senior living facilities to fit every income and need level. There are several 55 and over living communities such as The Village at Mill Landing, the Gardens at Town Center and The Gardens at Fieldstone. Many new independent living apartments with shared activity and dining space are located here such as Legacy at Park Crescent, Fleming Point Gracious Retirement, The Village at Unity, Ada Ridge, Crimson Ridge and Grande’Ville. For those needing

more care there are both intermediate and skilled nursing facilities such as Latta Road Nursing Home, Hamilton Manor Nursing Home, Atria – Greece and the Edna Tina Wilson Nursing Center.

For those who need assistance in caring for their elderly relatives, there are many in-home nursing and companionship businesses operating in Greece. Businesses such as Comfort Keepers, Home Instead Senior Care and Services for Seniors can help with transportation, companionship, laundry, cooking, errands and personal care services. In-home nursing care is also available from several sources. Unity Health Call provides an emergency monitoring system to help provide urgent care on-call while allowing the user to stay in the comfort of their own homes.

Professional Medical Offices & ServicesDue to the location of Unity Hospital, Greece is home to a great many professional medical offices. Whether you need a general practitioner, specialist, pediatrician, physical therapist, family dentist, orthodontist, or an optometrist, you will find it in Greece. Elizabeth Wende Breast Care recently moved to a state-of-the-art new facility.

Greece also has many pharmacies, both national and local, serving the needs of local residents. Emergency care is provided by two outstanding ambulance services: MonroeAmbulance and Greece Volunteer Ambulance. As in most of the country, the health care industry is rapidly expanding in Greece to take care of the growing and aging population.

The Town of Greece is home to thousands of local businesses in

the service, retail, manufacturing and professional sectors. In Greece you will fi nd everything from Fortune 500 companies to successful family-owned and operated businesses that help keep our local economy stable despite national challenges. The Town has a business-friendly attitude that recognizes the importance of planned business development to the local economy and future prosperity of New York State.

Convenient LocationGreece is conveniently located on the northwest side of Monroe County. Interstate 390 runs north/south and provides easy access to the rest of the area including the New York State Thruway (I-90) and the Lake Ontario State Parkway. State Route 104, the main commercial corridor in Town, is a newly reconstructed six-lane highway that sees over 40,000 vehicles travel on it daily. The Greater Rochester International Airport is just minutes away traveling south on 390, making it easily accessible for visitors. Rail connections are at the eastern border. Despite the large size both geographically and demographically,

Greece remains an easy area to travel through with a well maintained fl ow of traffi c through both the commercial and residential areas.

World Class ManufacturingHome to part of the world famous Kodak Park – now called Eastman Business Park – Greece has long been recognized for the diverse manufacturing that is housed here. The 1,200-acre technology center and industrial complex houses 35+ businesses including Carestream Health, Empire Digital Signs and Schlegel Electronic Materials, Inc. LiDestri Food and Beverage is located on Lee Road and is a premier manufacturer of sauces, dips and salsas in the United States. Work done in Greece at places such as Flower City Printing, is sent all over the world making Greece an ideal place for manufacturing. The Canal Ponds Business Park is home to well-recognized companies such as IBM, Johnson & Johnson Ortho Clinical Diagnostics, and the printing press for the Democrat and Chronicle.

Service, Retail & ProfessionalWest Ridge Road (Route 104) has long been the main commercial artery running through town. It serves as one of the most important retail centers in all of Monroe County and is continually being expanded. The Mall at Greece Ridge provides the heart of the corridor with over 1.6 million square feet of retail space and home to major retailers that include

Macy’s, Barnes & Noble and Target. Along the Ridge Road West corridor shoppers will fi nd large well-known companies such as Lowes, Walgreens, and Skechers Outlet. Major shopping plazas such as Stone Ridge, Ridgemont and Elm Ridge line the road and offer a variety of shopping options. A number of car dealerships can be found along West Ridge Road including: Bob Johnson Chevrolet, DOAN, Fuccillo Hyundai of Greece, NY, Fuccillo Kia, Bob Johnson Nissan, Mazda of West Ridge, and Ralph Honda to mention a few. Wegmans, Rochester’s hometown grocery supercenter, boasts three stores in the Town of Greece serving almost 100,000 residents. Other major commercial areas in Greece include Long Pond Road, Mt. Read Boulevard and Dewey Avenue.

Though Greece has a good selection of national brands located in town, there are also countless small businesses located here ready to serve your needs. Locally owned retail establishments such as Pet$aver Superstore, Solutions Studio & Spa, Ridge Rattan Casual Home, and The Laser Spa provide top notch service and selection to their customers. The Dewey Avenue corridor is home to many locally-owned small businesses in the retail, service and professional sectors. You’ll fi nd Triano’s Meat Market & Deli, Davies Seafood,

Ciaccias Deli, and Goodwill of Finger Lakes are just a few of the favorites in this area.

Greece also has a strong service and professional business community. Doctors, lawyers, accountants, insurance agents and financial planners are just a few examples of the professional business community located in Greece. The health care industry is particularly important to our town since we are home to the Unity Health System, which is merging with Rochester General Hospital to form the area’s 2nd largest medical organization. The Social Security office on West Ridge Road is located right near Kohls. On the south side of West Ridge Road, across from Stone Ridge Plaza, is a U.S. Army Recruiting office.

Local DevelopmentThough Greece has enjoyed strong

growth for many years, there are still many development opportunities in the Town. Residential development is growing in the northwest section of the Town. The commercial corridor on Route 104 is continuing to expand westward with two large developments currently being proposed. Eastman and Canal Ponds Business Parks both offer excellent locations for manufacturing and office space. There is also land along the historic Erie Canal on the southern border of Greece that is available for mixed use development. With its strong population and high traffic counts Greece will remain a strong draw for businesses for many years.

Chamber of CommerceThe Greece Chamber of Commerce has been serving the business community in Greece for thirty years. The largest suburban Chamber has 800 members and offers a strong variety of programs,

benefits and events designed to assist businesses with their success. Each year the Chamber recognizes local businesses for their accomplishments and contributions to both Greece’s business sector and the community at the annual Small Business of the Year Award Luncheon. In 2013 American Exteriors & Interiors, Inc. was the recipient of the Small Business of the Year Award and Christie Carpets the recipient of the Microenterprise of the Year Award. After receiving these awards, these two companies were recognized by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and received the prestigious 2014 Blue Ribbon Award.
