Oakville Sophie Mule Publicity Award

Khania of Peach Hill, Joanne Hardy

Khania has raised the profile of mules very positively and successfully. Khania featured in the TV show This Town” which was first viewed on November 23, 2013. It was run again this year on the TV

programme “grass roots.

Joanne was approached as a local from the Wairarapa when they were looking for “ordinary people doing something extraordinary” Khania took the cameraman for a ride in her gig with Joanne, while a “helicopter” camera took some amazing footage from above them and also showed the wide open

spaces in which they live.

.The feedback from the public was positive and they loved watching Khania clipping along the road at an active trot – she seemed to enjoy having the camera on her too! She was certainly showcased mules really well. Many people had never seen a mule, and to see one going out so well in harness

was great publicity for mules.

Khania has also had a very positive influence on the perception of mules by many horse and pony competitors by competing against them in graded dressage and combined drive competitions. Notably she has performed outstandingly at the Wairarapa Graded dressage competitions in 2014 and 2015 when in November 2014 she competed and won against 13 other ponies, some of them established winning combinations and in November 2015 she competed against 11 other horses and ponies and was placed third. This has meant that when she is talked about by the driving fraternity, she is accorded respect and recognition that she is a well performed mule. She has changed the perception by many of what a mule can do and that a well trained mule can perform as well as any good pony. She has publicised the ability of mules to perform well in competition, something people were not aware of

before.

North Island Publicity Award

Ben Baguley of Mamaku & Molly Baguley of Mamkau, Alan Baguley These donkeys have given the child patients pleasure at the Rotorua hospital children’s party. They have attended several functions at Whakatane Baptist church. They have contributed to the Whakatane Salvation Army functions such as Christmas etc. They have taken part in entertaining and enriching the life experiences of under privileged children. The donkeys have been a key attraction for children who have visited to see and ride Molly Baguley of Mamaku, while others have led Benjamin Baguley of Mamaku They have taken part in beach walks to publicize how much fun donkeys are to the general public. They have taken part in Donkey days which also raised money for rescuing donkeys in need through the Mamaku Rehoming and Rescue Centre. Molly Baguley of Mamaku and Benjamin Baguley of Mamaku have had their photo published in the Whakatane SPCA calendar,

South Island Publicity Award

Cotswold Minnie Moppet and Cotswold Lavender Rose, Lea Hullett These donkeys played a major role in the ANZAC lessons at Pleasant Point Primary School. The donkeys appeared in the Timaru Herald and have also been featured in the newspaper taking part in Christmas on The Bay at Caroline Bay and Minnie Moppet has had her photo on the front of the Timaru Herald being kissed by Lea to show the gentleness of donkeys.
