How Altro safety flooring works

Some manufacturers add a thin coating or an emboss of slip

resistant particles to create slip resistance. However this can

wear away with usage or even regular maintenance. This type of

slip resistance is temporary and will eventually put users at risk.

Other manufacturers rely on surface structure (ribs or nubs) to

create slip resistance. This can provide slip resistance under

dry conditions but can be very difficult to clean as dirt particles

become trapped in between the ribs.

Altro safety flooring works by incorporating aggregates into the

composition of the floor. The pressure created by walking over

safety flooring causes the aggregates in the flooring to push up

and rub against the shoe, creating friction.

When pressure is released, the floor regains its original, smooth

surface. This makes Altro Transflor safety flooring blend the best

of both worlds, something that is safe to walk on and remains

easy to clean.

How slips and falls occurSlips and falls occur when lubricated contaminants

on flooring create a film between the shoe and

the surface of the floor. The most common wet

contaminant is water. The film created by this

prevents complete contact between the shoe and the

floor and this can result in a slip and fall. The wet

film only needs to be 1-2 micrometers thick to prevent

complete contact between a shoe and the flooring.

That’s about one tenth the thickness of a human hair.

Wet floors is a frequent problem on buses and trains

as it is tracked in by passengers either in the form of

rain or snow. Add to this the movement of the vehicle

and the chance of slips and falls is even greater. Slip

and fall accidents cost the transportation industry

millions of dollars annually and are a serious concern.

Floor and step coverings are a major source of

passenger slip and fall accidents. These accidents

may occur when passengers slip or trip on steps or

the bus floor. The proper selection of floor coverings

and their maintenance are vital to minimizing

accidents.

What is in Altro safety flooring?Altro is a slip resistant vinyl safety flooring. Altro’s unique

patented construction of flexible, high-grade vinyl with slip

resistant grains throughout the wear layer of the safety flooring,

ensures a durable surface that remains slip-resistant for the life

of the floor.

VinylPound for pound, vinyl is more durable than many other flooring

materials. This allows vinyl flooring to be thinner and lighter

while still offering impressive durability. Combined with its

natural imperviousness to water, vinyl makes an ideal flooring

material especially for transit buses where passengers may track

in snow or rain onto the bus.

AggregatesAltro Transflor incorporates aggregates

of aluminum oxide, diamond hard silicon

carbide, and colored quartz crystals

(depicted). These minerals represent

some of the hardest materials on Earth

and ensure a slip resistant, durable

floor that will last for the life of the floor. This superior level of

durability is why Altro Transflor can offer warranties of up to 15

years on its safety flooring.

The aggregates in Altro also provides mechanical method of slip

resistance as they provide traction to foot in both wet and dry

conditions.

weldrods create a complete engineered system when combined

with our safety flooring.

Vinyl flooring is impervious to water and spillages, keeping your

Engineered with dual scrim design to address cracking and

The aggressive nature of the aggregates included in Altro flooring

provide a mechanical form of slip resistance. As such Altro

doesn’t rely on surface texture to enhance traction underfoot.

Altro is the first manufacturer with an in-house safety flooring

recycling system.

Altro flooring does not contain phthalates. We have replaced the

phthalates in our product with a renewable bio-based alternative.

Altro flooring includes rapidly renewable, bio-based content.

Derived from maize, our bio-based plasticizer is responsibly grown

in Europe and is not destined for human consumption.

Flooring for buses

Light Duty vehicles have many options available to them. Made to withstand extreme applications, any of our flooring ranges are suitable in either a 1.8mm or 2.2 mm thickness. For executive vans we recommend Altro Transflor Wood Safety.

For Medium Duty shuttle vehicles we typically recommend a 2.2 or 2.7 thickness of either the Altro Transflor Meta or Altro Transflor Chroma. For trolleys or executive coaches we recommend Altro Transflor Wood SafetyTM for its soothing, natural wood look.

Heavier Duty applications, such as city transit buses, require durable solutions. We recommend 2.7 thickness in either the Altro Transflor MetaTM, Altro Transflor ChromaTM, or Altro Transflor FiguraTM Range.

Our fabrication team produces turn-key kits to your

exact specifications. The pre-made kits make it much

easier for you to install the flooring, especially on large

complex buses.

Once the floor is cut and pre-welded, every part is

labeled and packaged in precise order to make it easy

for your installation team to install.

Custom kit programMost floors fail at the seams. Why risk down time when our welding experts can do it for you? We provide an unlimited array of custom sizes,
