Merit Award Samantha Muir Culinary Arts Newaygo County Career Tech Center Grant High School Nominator: Teresa Herman, Culinary Arts Instructor Samantha enrolled in the Culinary Arts program after touring several other programs at the Career Tech Center. After visiting the kitchen, she says the smells were incredible and they called to her inner baking and pastry chef. Samantha is described as the real deal. She goes to class every day with a smile and works very hard. She has proven to be cooperative with other students and staff in order to provide a quality product. She always maintains a positive and courteous attitude towards others and she works diligently to improve her skills. Her instructor adds, “Samantha is the type of person who will see a need and work through it, whether it be culinary related or peer related, she will tackle it head on.” Samantha has competed in SkillsUSA where she received 3 rd place in regionals and 12 th place in state. After high school, Samantha plans to own a small bakery. With the help of her instructors, she has been directed on how to run an efficient kitchen and getting experience through baking, preparing delicious meals, and working in the school store.     Ce’Aira Richardson Emerging Technologies in Computers, Multimedia & Software Bay-Arenac ISD Career Center Bridgeport Spaulding High School Nominator: Tammy Leavitt, Instructor Ce’Aira enrolled in the Emerging Technologies program because the computer was her access to knowledge. She says that the computer was her best friend growing up. Educational games were allowed as much as she wanted. Now, being in this program, Ce’Aira is exploring all the avenues within the program.

    Ce’Aira participates in many extra-curricular activities. She is on the honor roll; All-State Athlete for 2012 and 2013; MVP of Saginaw County 2013; President of the Parliamentary Procedure Team; BPA Officer; CIW Networking Associate; and attended junior Olympics. Her instructor, Tammy Leavitt, says, “Ce’Aira has a thirst for knowledge. Her determination is inspiring.” She has volunteered as a Career Center ambassador for several after school events and has participated in the Career Days for 4th, 8th, and 10th grade students. Her future plans are to attend college and pursue either Computer System Analyst or Information Technology Project Manager. The Emerging Technologies program is a perfect gateway to either career.
