CRICKET CANADA 2013 Annual Report

Message from the President

There is no doubt that 2013 was a years of challenges at Cricket Canada. The failure to qualify the senior men’s team into the 2014 World Twenty20 and the 2015 Cricket World Cup were no doubt disappointments. !

Despite this we are buoyed by the achievements of our young players at the u19 CWC and the understanding that performance on the field in

January will see us back in the Intercontinental Cup and accompanying 50 over league tournament. We must be ready to meet this challenge.!

While this is no easy task we are certainly favoured to do so and have set ourselves up to meet that challenge. A robust national tournament and upgrading our selection policy are key elements now in place to make strides on the field. !

Off the field, major strides have been made by the organization. We have restored credibility to the organization with the ICC, Sport Canada, Corporate Canada and most importantly our supporters. Grass roots cricket development is exploding and we have raised tens of thousands in new funding to support the Cricket Canada KIDS program. We will invest

this year thousands of dollars in grass-roots Women’s cricket as well.!

Professional cricket is on the way to Toronto and the business community is now behind a stadium project which will further support our ambitions.!

2014 will certainly be another year of challenges and its up to the organization to meet them. !

I want to thank each of you for your continued support and wish you all

the best on the pitch!

Kind Regards,!

Ravin Moorthy "President!

HIGH PERFORMANCE – SENIOR MEN’S

There is no doubt that 2013 was one of the tougher years on record for Canada. Starting with a winless tour to Trinidad, a difficult tour against Kenya and home losses to UAE, the team rebounded strongly with its first 4-day victory against Netherlands. A tour to Sri Lanka to prepare for the World Twenty20 qualifier netted positive results and an early win over Afghanistan showed hope as the tournament began. It was however not to be as Canada crashed out of the tournament in twelfth place and could not net one of the 6 spots in the T20. Canada parted ways with coach Gus Logie soon after and hired former coach Andy Pick to lead the way in the 50 over World Cup Qualifier in January 2014. Unfortunately the retirement of Ashish Bagai was too much to overcome and Canada finished in 8th place having to now qualify in 2015 to stay in the Intercontinental Cup.

HIGH PERFORMANCE – U19 PROGRAM

Canada finished 14th at the 2014 Cricket World Cup. Behind the steady play of Nitish Kumar and Nikhil Dutta, Canada fought hard in every match of the tournament. A score of 248-8 in a losing cause against eventual champions South Africa was the highlight of the tournament for the team.

Earlier in the summer, Canada waltzed through the ICC America’s regional qualifier with an unblemished record exerting their dominance in the region.

With Kumar and Dutta also part of the senior men’s team set-up it left them well prepared for the chance to perform in the tournament.

HIGH PERFORMANCE – WOMEN’S

Women’s cricket continued to grow steadily across the country with more domestic tournaments and leagues starting. With women’s cricket a target growth area for Cricket Canada, the future is very positive for the sport in Canada. Internationally the women qualified for the Women’s World Twenty20 qualifier in Ireland in the summer. Their first time at the event was a challenge off the bat losing to Sri Lanka and hosts Ireland before rebounding to beat Japan. Canada finished tied for 7th in the tournament.

HIGH PERFORMANCE – NCL

In 2012 Cricket Canada re-launched its national championship under the banner of the National Cricket League. Instead of each province sending their own representative teams, Cricket Canada divided the country into 5 regions, with a team composed of players from a particular region on the team. The 5 teams are the Pacific Edge, the Western Stallion’s, Prairie Fire, Central Shield, and Eastern Fury. In addition, each region was assigned a member of the Canada national cricket team to serve as captain. Other Canadian national team players at both the Senior and Under 19 levels competed for regional teams as well. The tournament gives players a clear and direct path to the national team and equalizes the level of competition across the country.

In addition to the T20 tournament, this competition also features a 50 over tournament featuring the same squads. The Cliff Cox Trophy is awarded to the 50 overs winner, while the Calvin Clarke Trophy is awarded to the T20 winner.

In 2013, Cricket Canada brought in 5 professional cricketers from Trinidad and Tobago to improve the play of the competition. The players including former international Jason Mohammed invigorated the tournament and gave a much needed boost to our domestic cricket.

The Western Stallions were double winners of both trophies in 2013.!!

CORPORATE PARTNERSHIPS

Cricket Canada continued its strong relationships in the corporate community with the additions of CIBC, Vij’s, Rogers TV, Admiral, Titan GSG, CRIC HQ, and Howzatt productions to our stable of corporate supporters.

The ability to attract larger corporate partners has helped Cricket Canada expand the NCL, KIDS program and improve the quality of our performance and training gear.

A special thanks to all of our partners and we look forward to working with them again in 2014 and beyond.!

STAKEHOLDERS – ICC AND SPORT CANADA

In May 2013, the ICC reaffirmed its commitment to Canada by hosting its Development Committee meeting in Toronto. The development committee were joined by ICC HPM Richard Done, GDM Tim Anderson, CEO David Richardson and President Alan Isaac.

At the news conference at the end of the conference the president of the International Cricket Council, said that he and ICC CEO David Richardson were “hugely impressed by the progress” in the Canadian governing body. From near disaster in 2011 where Canada were at complete odds with the sports governing body, the new administration repaired and rebuilt the relationship.

“It’s fair to say . . . that 12, 18, 24 months ago, the ICC wasn’t that happy,” Isaac said.

The ICC president pointed to Cricket Canada’s changes in governance and the new management regime as key areas of success

The comments were clearly appreciated by the Government of Canada. A positive relationship with the Minister of Sport resulted in over $100,000 in additional funding for Cricket Canada in 2013.
