All Times are Eastern StandardOn November 10, 1917, a small cohort of 22 football players traveled to Atlanta torepresent Davidson College against Auburn, one of the most formidable teams in theSouth. The Plainsmen had massacred their first four opponents, outscoring teams, 141-6.

According to one account, they were “big, quick, and undefeated” and heavily fa-vored in the day’s matchup. Davidson was 2-4 and started a line averaging 20 poundsless.

Not surprisingly, Auburn dominated the game, outgaining the “Red and Black”240 yards to Davidson’s 91 yards. Astoundingly, Davidson pulled together an offensiveattack through the efforts of running back A.R. “Buck” Flowers and quarterback HenrySpann, delivering a “bewildering array of forward passes.”

Davidson defeated one of the most powerful teams in the South that day, 21-7, withscrappiness that captured the awe and respect of Atlanta sportswriters. They wrote ofthe “Wildcats” from Davidson College, whose small stature and ferocious style provedoverwhelming. One account notes that Morgan Blake of the Atlanta Journal remarked ofthe Davidson team, “No other team ever put together in these United States of thesame weight as Coach Fetzer’s team could ever get the verdict over the flock of wildmen from North Carolina.”

The Davidsonian picked up on the nickname, and it has been used ever since, replac-ing former, milder references such as “Red and Black,” “Presbyterians” and “Preach-ers.”— revised and rewritten from an account in the Davidson College archives

HEAD COACH PRICE

2014 WOMEN’S TENNIS

Caroline Price enters her 32nd season in2013-14 as the head women's tennis coach. She began her exemplary tenure at Davidson

in 1983 and has since guided the Wildcats to one national champi-onship and 22 winning seasons, including seven straight years, be-fore Davidson went 12-12 in 2008-09.

The women's tennis program is one of two female programs atDavidson to make a national tournament appearance, and among active Davidson coaches, Price has one of the highest overall winningpercentage (.584) of any women's team.

Entering the 2013-2014 women's tennis season, Price has an over-all record of 415-296 and is 113-81 in Southern Conference duals.

Davidson came to within one win of matching its win total com-bined from 2011 and 2012, going 9-12 during the 2013 season. The'Cats, who went 2-8 in SoCon play, opend the season winning sevenof its first nine matches. Coach Price coached her first SoCon All-Freshman team member since it was formed in 2009, as Elaina Cum-mer represented Davidson. The first-year Wildcat stepped right intothe starting lineup, winning seven singles matches and capturing an-other eight in doubles action. Davidson also had a solid run at home, going 9-6 during the season.

In 2012, Davidson again continued its youth movement with fivesophomores seeing time in the starting lineup as the Wildcats went 5-19 overall and 2-8 in the SoCon. Of the five wins, four of them cameat the friendly confines of Covington Tennis Courts. SophomoreBrites Moniz-Soares took a big step in her sophomore campaign, going a team-best 15-6 in singles action. She was honored with a spoton the All-SoCon Second Team at the No. 2 singles position, makingher the 12th Wildcat under Price to get first or second team honors.

The 2011 season saw Price break in five freshmen as Davidsonwent just 5-20 overall and 1-9 in league play. It was the first time theWildcats finished under .500 since the 2001 team went 8-13. The 2011season was still a milestone year as the veteran coach reached the400-win plateau for her career, getting it on Feb. 18 in a 7-0 win athome vs. USC-Upstate.

The 2010 campaign saw Davidson finish in the top-four of theSoCon standings with a 7-3 mark, while Price guided the 'Cats to a15-8 overall record. The 'Cats advanced to the SoCon Tournament, asonly the top-four teams made it, before seeing their season come toan end with a defeat to eventual champion College of Charleston. The 15 wins made it the sixth time in the last seven years the Wild-cats have tallied at least that many wins in a year and marked theninth straight season they have had a winning record in leaguematches.

After opening the season 4-7, Price guided the Wildcats to an 8-5mark down the stretch, including a 4-1 win in the 'Cats SoCon Tour-nament opener against Georgia Southern, to finish the 2009 cam-paign at 12-12 and 6-4 in league play. The winning mark in SoConmatches was the eighth straight season the Wildcats have sported awinning record against their SoCon-foes. Davidson also again had awinning record at home, sporting an 8-4 mark.

For the third time in the past four years, Price led the Wildcats tothe finals of the SoCon Tennis Championships as Davidson con-cluded with a 19-6 overall mark (7-2 in SoCon) in 2008. The 19 winsmarked the fifth straight season the Wildcats had taken home at least15 wins or more in a single season. Of the 19 wins, 10 of them cameon the Wildcats' home court as they won their first 10 straight homematches, before falling to close out the regular season.

The 2007 campaign saw Price guide the Wildcats to an 18-7 over-

all mark and appearance in the 2007 SoCon Women’s Tennis Cham-pionship Semifinals before falling to College of Charleston.

Price garnered her third and most recent SoCon Coach of the Yearhonors during 2001-02 season when her team posted 18 victories. The 2002-03 team followed with a 13-6 season and an appearance inthe Southern Conference championship match for the first time sincethe format of the tournament changed in 1998. And last year, al-though their hopes for a championship were dashed by College ofCharleston in the semifinals of the SoCon Tournament, the Wildcatsposted eight regular-season conference wins, the most ever in schoolhistory.

In Price's second year at Davidson, she led the team to the 1984NCAA Division III National Championship, the only national cham-pionship ever earned by a Davidson athletic team. In 1985, the Wild-cats returned to the NCAA Tournament but lost in the finals to theUniversity of San Diego. That year, the 'Cats set a new school recordfor wins in a season with 21.

Coach Price was faced with a new challenge in 1987 as Davidsonbegan competing at the Division I level without the advantage ofscholarships. Despite the lack of funds and the marked increase incompetition, Price's teams still managed to garner more wins thanlosses. It was not until the 1990-91 season, the first time DavidsonCollege offered scholarships to women, that Price was able to offerscholarships to her players.

In 1993, Davidson started competing as a member of the SoConafter a successful two-year stint (including one league champi-onship) as a member of the Big South Conference. Moving up yet an-other level in competition, the Wildcats responded to the newestchallenge by finishing the season 12-5 for a second-place finish in theleague.

Since their introduction to the SoCon more than a decade ago,Price's teams have found great success. Thanks to the 'Cats' impres-sive 6-1 record in conference play in 1994, Price earned SouthernConference Coach-of-the-Year honors. She was recognized again in1996 after leading the Wildcat squad to a 5-2 league record.

A 1972 graduate of Furman, Price earned a bachelor of arts de-gree in physical education. Before her arrival at Davidson, sheserved as East Carolina's Director of Men's and Women's Tennis.

Reflecting his support of academics, Davidson’s NCAA graduation rateof 91 percent was the highest in Division I in 2001-02, second in 2002-03 witha rate of 97 percent and continues to be above 90 percent each year.

“I firmly believe Davidson repre-sents the ideal in college athletics andthink the success of Davidson’s stu-dents, both in competition and aftergraduation proves that,” said Murphy.“It’s true that Davidson needs intercol-legiate athletics, but intercollegiate ath-letics need Davidson even more.”

Since Murphy’s return to Davidson, the Wildcats have pursued severalmajor capital projects, including the cre-ation of the highly-innovative $10 mil-lion Davidson Scholars Program, andmajor improvements have been com-pleted in Belk Arena and at Smith Fieldat Richardson Stadium.

The last five years have seen the con-struction of the Belk Artificial SurfaceField for field hockey, the new AlumniStadium for soccer, Wilson BaseballPark and batting cages and the footballstadium expansion project, which in-cluded a state-of-the-art weight room, anew press box and additional perma-nent seating.

Murphy, the 2004 NACDA DivisionI-AA/I-AAA Southeast Region Athletic Director of the Year, served two termson the prestigious NCAA Division I Management Council, a policy-makingbody within the NCAA governance structure. Quillen has had a long and distin-guished career at Rice. She joined thefaculty as an assistant professor of his-

Quillen's hus-band, KenKennedy-a com-puter pioneer who founded the computer science program at Rice—died of pancreatic cancer in 2007. "His greatest gift to me, and to theRice community, was in living the life he would have chosen," Quillensaid. "That's something I think about in a very profound way everyday."
