Flower Descriptions ULarge CrocusU – Colorful crocus are a first sign of spring! Good for borders or edging; in small or large group plantings. They will spread (a.k.a. naturalizing) in the grass, woodlands, slopes, under trees. Deer resistant. UDutch IrisU – Have a mix of upright and downward curving petals that often reveal contrasting colors. These showy flowers have a light, airy character that lends beauty to landscaping and floral arrangements. Deer proof. UDaffodils and NarcissiU – These wonderful flowers boast hardiness, deer resistance, tolerant of full sun to shade and look as great in a vase as in the garden. Narcissus is the botanical name for all daffodils; therefore all daffodil are narcissus, but most people have come to use the term daffodil when talking about large trumpet shaped flowers and narcissi when talking about smaller cupped flowers. ULilyU – The lily is a summer blooming flower which has six petals that overlap at the base to form a trumpet-shaped flower. The flower has a sweet smell designed to attract pollinators to it. The flowers traditionally have large filaments protruding from the center of the flower, with yellow to orange stamens hanging from the end. UTulipsU – Tulip bulbs were once so valuable they were used as money! The tulip family offers a wide selection such as Kaufmanniana, Fosteriana, Darwin, Triumph, Single Early/Late, Double Early/Late, and the list goes on. Most tulips do not naturalize but they will return year after year in the same bed. Some varieties are very popular and easily recognized while others are finding new fans after many years. UFritillaria U– These flowers are deer and rodent resistant. They hang downward with bell shaped flowers. UHyacinths/Muscari U– Ideal for borders, rock gardens, naturalizing, or co-planting with tulips or daffodils. Hyacinth petals curve out while muscari (aka grape hyacinth) resemble a cone shaped bunch of grapes. If left undisturbed, they multiply rapidly. May also be forced indoors. Deer resistant. UAlliumsU – Care free and rewarding, deer resistant, make excellent cut flowers. They will tolerate poor garden soil; once established they will naturalize easily. UChionodoxaU – These flowers are among the first bulbs to bloom in early spring. Growing approximately 6” tall, once it becomes time to cut your grass for the first time these flowers will have already created a nice blanket on your grass. USnowdropsU – These bulbs produce one small flower that hangs down like a “snowdrop” until it blooms. These miraculous flowers even take to their name, sometimes not even waiting for the snow to melt before pushing up out of the ground. UPaperwhitesU – Paperwhite Narcissus can be grown without going through a cold period as they are a tropical plant. These bloom at a height of 16-20” with several white flowers. UBulb Care FertilizerU – A mild organic fertilizer. A 4 pound bag will cover 100 square feet.
