The Real Gem of the RubiesBy Joe Doucette

Located just a half hour drive from Elko, South Fork Reservoir is one of the most popular as well as productive destination waters in Elko County. This reservoir was built in 1989 for recreation and lies entirely on public land. South Fork contains rainbow, brown, cutthroat and bowcutt trout, along with smallmouth and largemouth black bass species and channel catfish. Wipers (white bass/striper) were introduced in 2002 and the lake now produces double digit fish with the current water record caught in 2012 weighing in at 13 pounds. Due to the rich nutrient level of the lake providing excellent forage for game fish species, many anglers find it difficult to catch fish here with the average angler walking away with less than two fish on an average day. However, what South Fork lacks in quantity of catch, the quality of the fish caught is excellent with the average trout coming in at almost 17 inches. The current water record for smallmouth bass is 6 lbs. 4 oz. and in the summer of 2011 the state record channel catfish weighing in at 32 lbs. 7 oz. was caught here. Most forms of bait including PowerBait, worms and salmon eggs are effective for trout as well as with spinners, minnow type lures and flies. Trout fishing is best in spring to early summer, late fall, and through the ice in winter. During the heat of late summer, a few trout are caught early in the morning. PowerBait fished off of the bottom is very popular. Take a good sized chunk of PowerBait and make a bell shape with it, placing it on the hook with the small end towards the line. Using a slip sinker the bait is floated off of the bottom and presents itself in much the same attitude as a leech, which is a popular food source in the lake. Areas that are productively fished using this technique include the shoreline between the dam and the State Park campground, the bluffs on the west shore of the lake near the dam as well as between Jet Ski Beach and the causeway at the south end of the lake. Trollers frequently target the deeper water from the bluffs along the west shore to the dam and then continue on towards the State Park campground. Like other area

waters, trolling flashers with worms, spinners or rapalas can also be very effective. Fly fishing from shore, float tube or boat is also popular, though most fly fisherman use either a tube or a boat. Midges hatch from spring through the fall and are larger than normal. They can be tied in sizes 10 through 16 using a black 3/0 thread for the body, white antron for a tail and wings with a little peacock hurl for the thorax. Wooly buggers and leech patterns also work well in blood, black and olive. Mohair leech with either a tungsten or brass beadhead can be effective as well. Many float tubers troll a leech or wooly bugger fly behind them as they move between areas. The old river channel on the southwest side of the lake (near the coyote boat ramp) is a great place to float tube for both trout and bass. During the heat of summer fishing is best in the morning on South Fork with it dying off drastically by noon. Besides the bite shutting down in the afternoon, anglers often have to contend with the skiers and personal watercraft traffic that picks up as the water warms. Bass fishing is good in the spring as anglers target the guard males on the spawning beds, though care should be taken in releasing the fish immediately without too much handling. Though this is an effective method for fishing, there are more fish off of the beds than on them. Target bass near structures such as the bluffs on the west side and in the weeds associated with shallow water over by the nesting island, also on the west side of the lake. The usual plastic grubs, crank baits and minnow type lures are effective for bass as well as flies that imitate crawfish, leeches and minnows. Bunny leeches (flies tied with rabbit hair zonker strips) in black, brown and orange work well when used with an intermediate or full sink line. Limits for fish are: 5 trout and 15 warmwater game fish of which not more than 1 may be a black bass, 1 may be a wiper and 5 may be channel catfish. Minimum size for black bass and white bass hybrids is 15 inches. However, no black bass may be kept between March 1 and June 30 when catch and release fishing only is allowed for black bass.

On a brisk December morning, an angler feels the unmistakable tug of a fish on the end of his line. With hushed excitement he sets the hook and begins to reel in his catch, a feisty rainbow trout that will fit nicely in his frying pan. Just then, a pair of wild Canada geese flies in and set their wings for landing. They honk loudly to announce their arrival and invite their friends to join them. Within minutes this pair of birds and the angler are joined by several more geese, all voicing their approval of the lead pairs choice to land near a tule-lined island on the small lake. While scenes like this are not generally associated with Southern Nevada, this actually took place at Lorenzi Park, a city-owned facility located just minutes away from the Las Vegas Strip. Lorenzi Park is one of four urban fisheries located in the Las Vegas area. Each one offers seasonal fishing opportunities for local residents and visitors alike. The other three fisheries are located at Floyd Lamb Park at Tule Springs, Sunset Park and Veterans Memorial Park in Boulder City. The Nevada Department of Wildlife plants rainbow trout in the park ponds during the cooler months of the year and catfish during the warm season. Following an extensive renovation project that included a redesign of its lake, Lorenzi Park was recently reopened to the public. Those who fished at Lorenzi prior to renovation project will notice significant changes that improved the aesthetics of the lake but also somewhat limited the shoreline availability for anglers. That said, there is still plenty of room for anglers to set up and enjoy a day of fishing. Available fish species include bluegill and largemouth bass. Lorenzi Park is located on Washington Avenue just west of Rancho drive. Floyd Lamb at Tule Springs is a popular destination among local anglers and offers them the choice of stocked rainbows, catfish, largemouth bass and bluegill. Located in

the northwest corner of the Las Vegas Valley, the parks fishery is comprised of four ponds. NDOW plants fish only in the largest and uppermost of the four ponds, but the fish often make their way into the other ponds. Anglers looking for shade during the warmer months will find it here. Through the years, these ponds have produced a 20-pound channel catfish, a 10-pound 2-ounce largemouth bass and a redear sunfish that measured nearly 11 inches in length. Other available species include green sunfish and crappie. Sunset Park Pond has long been a mainstay for Las Vegas area anglers, and it too has been recently renovated. The pond itself covers about 14 acres and provides fishermen with excellent shoreline access. Though rainbow trout and channel catfish are the primary sport fish, the fishery also includes bluegill, redear sunfish, black crappie, and largemouth bass. The big fish list for this pond includes a 24-pound 6-ounce carp, a 9-pound 14-ounce largemouth bass and 12-pound 10-ounce rainbow trout. Sunset Park is located at the corner of Sunset Road and Eastern Avenue near the southeastern corner of McCarran Airport. Parking is available at both the north and south ends of the pond. Veterans Memorial Park is located in Boulder City and is the newest addition to Southern Nevadas urban fishery. The trees along the pond shoreline provide some shade in the summer months but still have lots of room to grow. Covering approximately three surface acres, the Boulder Pond has a maximum depth of about 15 feet and is lined by a concrete walk. NDOW plants only rainbow trout and channel catfish, but anglers may find bluegill leftover following Free Fishing day events. This is a popular fishery for fly anglers. Boats and other flotation devices, including float tubes, are prohibited on each of the urban ponds.

Fishing with a kid is a great way to spend time together in the outdoors. Here are a few tips I have learned teaching kids how to fish as a professional and as a father. Hopefully, these few tips will ensure you and your kids have a good time together. If you have no experience fishing, there is a great deal of information on getting started. Many websites are full of information for the beginner including the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) website ndow.org. One of the best ways to get started is to attend one of the many classes that NDOW has to offer during the summer months. Once you know what to do, the next step is where to go. Again your best resource for where to go is the NDOW website. Fishing Nevada has so many great opportunities to get an angler started. Many of our urban areas have neighborhood or urban ponds, which are the perfect place to get a young one started. The ponds generally are in family friendly county parks where there are facilities such as bathrooms and handicapped access. In addition to having great facilities, the neighborhood and urban ponds of Nevada are heavily stocked with catchable trout. NDOW has a full listing of local fishing locations and stocking reports. Kids tend to have a short attention span, so the best place to start is close to home. Your kid might not last long and you will need to move on to something else other than fishing. Plan on about an hour when fishing with kids. While fishing with kids its not always about the catching, taking in the outdoors is part of the experience too. I learned early on that while catching does hook them its the whole experience of being with family or friends that really keeps their interest throughout a lifetime. Equipment plays a crucial role when fishing with kids so keep it simple. One of the best starting combos is a spin casting rod. If you need to buy a rod, plan on spending about $25 on a spin casting rod and reel combination. This type of rod will help avoid frustration for you and the child. If fishing for trout for the first time try using size 6 and 8 hooks with a split shot about to 2 feet above the hook. Bobbers are not always needed unless you need to suspend the bait. Try using bait like PowerBait, corn and salmon eggs. These baits can be easier to apply than a

wiggling worm. Equipment can be intimidating for a child so take small steps. Have them attach the bobber or put on the bait. Casting will be difficult for them to learn at first so you should do the casting, but have them do the retrieve and of course let them reel the fish in. So youve applied bait and cast your rod when all of the sudden you get a fish on your line. Now what? If its their first time, a live fish can be disturbing to a child. Teach them respect for the fish and how to handle the fish correctly. If they want nothing to do with the fish and are fearful to get near it, go ahead and try to release the fish. Many times, however, children are very proud of their first fish and want to show it off to their family and friends. Make sure to encourage this so they will want to go with you again. In my experience you should always prep and cook the fish the day of the catch so the child can associate the fish with food. By doing this you assure the child the fish will not be wasted or forgotten. Small successes are what it is about when fishing with kids. Remember its the whole experience of fishing from learning how to cast, putting on their own bait, to identifying different types of fish. Many of my best fishing outings Ive had with kids there was not one fish caught but the memories of catching bull frogs, crayfish, and just spending time together exploring the surroundings made the whole experience. Be sure to bring along drinks and snacks to keep the kids from getting cranky. This also adds to the experience. When I take my kids theres always something tasty they like for snacks so fishing is associated with something special. And of course its always a good idea to have some first aid at hand for the bump or bruise that may occur. Taking a kid under 12 is free. For the junior annual fishing license for ages 12 - 15 the cost is $13. The one-day fishing permit is $9. For those who qualify there is an annual Nevada Special fishing permit available. After an applicant meets the permit requirements, NDOW will issue a fishing permit to a public or non-profit private group who want to take individuals fishing. This permit is a great resource to allow teachers or non-profit groups such Boys and Girls Club to take students fishing. It eliminates the complication of taking large groups fishing.

Take a Kid Fishing...its Worth it!

BULLHEADNo scales. Tail only slightly forked, with rounded lobes. Adults are blackish, dark olive or dark brown. Belly is yellow, greenish-white, or white. Chin barbels are entirely black. The pectoral fin spine is smooth. Found in farm ponds and reservoirs throughout Nevada.

GREEN SUNFISHEach scale is flecked with yellow or emerald green. Back and sides olive-green, and lower belly yellowish-copper or brassy. Body is short, stocky, and deeply compressed from side to side. The gill cover has a broad, light margin, and it often has a black spot on the rear flap. The gill cover bone is stiff all the way to the margin which is different from most other sunfish.

BULL TROUT (CHAR)The bull trout is normally olive-green to light green along the back and sides and appears somewhat washed out. Back with pale yellow spots and sides with orange or red spots; fins fringed with yellow orange; pectoral, pelvic, and anal fins with white margins. This fish is native to only the Jarbidge River system of northern EIko County and occurs in tributaries associated with the two forks of that stream system.

CUTTHROAT TROUTBody color is highly variable with three subspecies in Nevada. Back may be steel gray to olive-green. Sides may be yellow-brown with red or pink along belly. Slash marks on either side of the throat beneath the lower jaw may be yellow, crimson-red or orange. Fins uniform color with no white tips. Scattered spots are usually round and black, more closely grouped towards the tail. Teeth on back of tongue. May hybridize with rainbow. Native to the Humboldt, Snake, and Bonneville basins of Nevada. Currently occurs in 112 streams and a small number of lakes where its well known for its large size.

BROWN TROUTBack brown or olive with large black spots. Sides light brown to yellowish, with numerous black and red-orange spots surrounded by light blue rings. Few if any spots on tail. Tail square, not forked. Brown trout occur widely in central and eastern Nevada streams and occur in about 73 streams statewide. Also found in some lakes and reservoirs. Spooky and difficult to catch.

BROOK TROUT (CHAR)Color ranges from olive, blue-gray or black on the back to white on the belly. Belly and lower fins brilliant orange in spawning males. Upper body and dorsal fin have mottled or worm-like markings. Red spots, with or without bluish rings around them. The most distinguishing marks are the white and thin black strip along the fore edge of the lower fins. Tail square or slightly forked. Occurs in about 278 mountain streams in Nevada where it frequents cooler water. Found in Ruby Mountain alpine lakes and other coldwater lakes.

CHANNEL CATFISHNo scales, tail deeply forked with pointed lobes. Body pale bluish-olive above and bluish-white below. Spots vary from a few to many over much of the body and may not occur on large fish. Barbels extend from the chin and upper jaw. Both dorsal and pectoral fins have strong, sharp spines. Larger fish may be distinguished from the white catfish by the longer black barbels and more streamlined body form. Tail more deeply forked and head thinner and less rounded than white catfish. White on belly only to forward edge of anal fin. Found in warm water streams and reservoirs in northwestern and southern Nevada.

    Selected Game Fish of Nevada

LAKE TROUT OR MACKINAWNot as highly colored as other trout. Dark gray or gray-green above, belly light gray or white. Light gray irregular shaped spots or lines on back, sides, dorsal fin and tail. No white edging appears on lower fins as in brook trout. Tail deeply forked. Currently found in Lake Tahoe, Nevada-California, and Liberty and Echo Lakes in EIko County.

LARGEMOUTH BLACK BASSDark green on back and sides, silvery below. Belly is greenish-white. A broad dark band on the sides which consists of irregular patches touching together. Dorsal fin with 9 to 10 sharp spines nearly separated from the soft rays by a deep notch. Upper jaw when closed extends at least to the rear edge of the eye in adults, usually beyond. Abundant in lakes and reservoirs throughout Nevada.

MOUNTAIN WHITEFISHBack and fins are light brown and the sides and belly are silver and white. There are no spots. Tail deeply forked and body is deep and round. Mouth small with no teeth. Large fleshy adipose fin. Scales large and rough. The whitefish occurs in a number of larger streams in western and northeastern Nevada.

BLUEGILLVery colorful. Light to dark blue on bright purple. In breeding season, the breast of males is red. Gill covers often blue with a black spot on the rear of the ear flap. Faint vertical bars on the sides. Dorsal fin has 10 spines followed without interruption by 10 or 12 rays. The mouth is small and when closed, barely reaches the front of the eye.
