GHSA football teams are compet-ing to get to the much-anticipated

state championship games at the Geor-gia Dome in fourteen different stadiums across the state. This is the third year of the expansion to six classifications and seven championships, and this change has provided added excitement to the GHSA playoff structure. The players and coaches have worked hard all year to get to this point in the sea-son. Many of you have supported these teams in various ways this season, and that is an important part of the success of these teams. It is my desire that you en-joy your experience at these games, and that you demonstrate the highest levels of sportsmanship as you cheer on your team in a positive way.

The GHSA is grateful for the host schools where these games are played, and we want to thank the administrators and their staffs for working to make these games special. The GHSA wants to thank the large number of volunteer workers who serve at these games to make them flow smoothly. With two weekends left in the 2014 foot-ball season, Georgia is set to wrap up

one of the most competitive seasons in state history. Just looking back two years, we have seen 12 different schools win state titles, in-cluding seven first-ever state champs. Four of last year’s defending champs have already fallen out of the playoffs and there are 10 semi-finalist currently sitting two wins away from capturing first-ever state titles.

CHANGE IN THE AIR… This past offseason, we saw more than 70 head coaching changes across the state and also witnessed the first reclassification since the GHSA expanded to a sixth classification in 2012. This recipe for change was mixed with Georgia’s well-established reputation for un-predictable storylines and must-see matchups. There were 192 teams that battled for a spot in

this year’s playoffs and only seven will be able to end the 2014 season with victories. By the time the semifinals are set, all of the remaining teams are riding hot-streaks. There are the unbeatens like Colquitt County, Allatoona and Buford that have been on a roll the whole season, but there are also teams that have had to find their stride in order to peak at the right time. In Class AAAAAA, McEachern opened the season with back-to-back losses and Archer dropped its first three games before sparking its current 10-game winning streak. Now, the Indians and Tigers stand as two of the most dangerous remain-ing teams in the postseason. McEachern has outscored its three playoff opponents by 25.3 points per game and Archer has topped its trio of adversaries by 34 points per game, including back-to-back 43-point blowouts. Also in Class AAAAAA, Etowah has rebounded to stamp

school-record 11 wins this season and rides a seven-game win streak into its trip to Archer, after suffering back-to-back region defeats in the heart of the regular season.

BRACKET BUSTERS… Class AAAAA’s last two state champs (Gainesville, Creekside) were first-time champs and judging by all the upsets in this year’s Class AAAAA bracket, this classification is once again up for grabs. Mays has the talent to matchup with anyone, but it was the Raiders’ lack of play-off experience they have overcome this post-season that has been the most impressive. The Raiders’ playoff run puts them two wins away from becoming the first city of Atlanta school to win a state title since 1973. In Class AAA and Class AAAA, we have seen schools handle the reclassification ex-tremely well. All four of Class AAAA’s semifi-nalists (Buford, Woodward Academy, Carters-ville and St. Pius) were classed up from AAA last year, which means a first-time AAAA champion will be crowned. Despite Class AAA losing some of it’s top teams to higher clas-sifications, the new teams that entered it this year have made it one of the most competitive classes this season. Westminster and Calhoun both made the jump from Class AA and have made their way to the semis.

STORYLINES MEET IN SEMIS FOR MORE PLAYOFF DRAMA

NORTH VS. SOUTH… In Class AA, the playoffs have been a weekly showcase of North vs. South and only GAC is left from the northern half of the state. The average distance between opponents in Class AA the past two rounds was more than 200 miles and after hosting Lamar County and Vidalia, GAC must make the 200 mile trip south to Jaycee Stadium to take on Fitzgerald. In Class A, no school has repeated as state champs since Lincoln County in 2005-06, but both of last year’s champs (Marion County and Aquinas) are undefeated with home field ad-vantage entering the semifinals. Mount Paran and Calvary Day join Aquinas as undefeated teams left in Class A, and ELCA is back in the semis for the first time since its 2012 state championship season, despite starting the season 0-6. Class A-Public (Marion County, Hawkinsville, Commerce, Irwin County) and Class AAAA (Buford, Cartersville, Woodward Academy, St. Pius) are the only classifications, in which all four semifinalists have won state titles before. MCEACHERN VS. COLQUITT COUNTY Colquitt County won its only state championship in 1994 and has set a state record with six consecutive semifinals appearances under its seven-year head coach and former Hoover head man, Rush Propst. The Packers’ state crown in ‘94 is the only championship won among Class AAAAAA’s semifinalists. Colquitt County is the lone unbeaten team in the state’s top classifica-tion and captured its first region championship since 1999 with its perfect record in Region 1. Sihiem King leads Colquitt’s backfield and has 13 rushing touchdowns this postseason. Quarter-back Chase Parrish keeps the Packers balanced and averages just under 200 passing yards per game with his 73.5 completion percentage and 25 passing touchdowns this year. Defensively, DeThemeyus “Bull” Barge leads Colquitt County with 160 total tackles and linebacker Quintin Hampton has 131 total takedowns. The aggressive Packers defense has produced 107.5 tackles for loss this year. Colquitt County will have to get to the backfield fast against a McEachern team that is the hottest aerial attack in the state. Lefty sophomore Bailey Hockman, who has thrown for 3,272 yards and 40 touchdowns this season, quarterbacks the Indians. Duke-commit T.J. Rah-ming leads the receiving corps with Tyler Smith. Rahming has 1,431 receiving yards and 18 touch-downs this season and is 214 yards away from tying former MLK receiver, Demarco Robinson, for the state record for most receiving yards in a season. The sophomore Smith, is not far behind Rahming with 1,100 receiving yards and 18 touchdowns. Right tackle Chuma Edoga is one of the best linemen in the nation and will look to buy Hockman and his dynamic receiving duo time with Louisville-commit and standout guard Chandler Jones. Colquitt County owns a 2-1 all-time record over McEachern, including a thrilling 30-28 road victory over the Indians in the opening round of the 2012 playoffs.

ETOWAH VS. ARCHER Archer was a preseason No. 1 in various polls but dropped its first three games and flew un-der the radar during its run to a share of the Region 7 title. The Tigers, which opened as a school in 2009, are making their first-ever semifinals appearance and enter their final four matchup as arguably the hottest team in the state. Archer eliminated two-time defending champion Norcross with a 38-22 first round victory and has sent Lee County and Hillgrove home with consecutive 56-13 wins. The triumph over Hillgrove in the quarterfinals saw Archer explode to a 56-0 lead in the second quarter. Junior Dylan Singleton led Archer with a punt return touchdown, a receiv-ing score and a rushing touchdown before the first half ended. Archer quarterback Gabe Tiller emerged as one of the state’s top passers last season and continues to spread the ball around to Singleton and South Carolina commits Connor Redmond and Kyle Davis. Etowah became the first Cherokee County school to advance to the semifinals after stamping a school-record 11th win in the quarterfinals. The Eagles have doubled their three playoff opponents in scoring (114-57) with wins over South Forsyth, Westlake and Newton. Etowah is the only remaining playoff team that never made it into the state rankings this season but has plenty of talent that has been recognized. Tyray Devezin leads the backfield after his older brother Raishod suffered a season-ending injury the seventh game of the season. Devezin rushed for 232 yards and three touchdowns in Etowah’s 43-29 win over Newton and has more than 1,500 rushing yards this season. Brad Morgan and Scott Morgan are Etowah linemen committed to Georgia Tech and junior Alex Smith is a 6-foot-4, 285-pound offensive tackle that has started to gain momentum in recruiting circles.

MAYS VS. STOCKBRIDGE Mays joins Class AAA’s Westminster as the only No. 3 seeds to advance to the semifinals and the Raiders have used impressive wins over South Paulding, Ware County and Jones County to get there. Mays has the ability to produce big plays at anytime and the Raiders ended both half’s in the quarterfinals with huge scoring plays. Asahnia Aderhold threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Julius Whitehead on the final play of the game to give Mays a 44-41 victory over Jones County. Aderhold finished with three scoring strikes and also threw a Hail Mary to Tayshawn Brown that resulted in a touchdown right before the half. In the same victory over Jones County, Deparis Carter hauled in a reception and added a kickoff return for a touchdown. Trying to avoid giving up the big play will be a focus of Stockbridge, which has been a fantastic defensive football team this season. In the playoffs, Stockbridge has averaged 35 points per game, while allowing just 11.7 points per game. Stockbridge has proved its dominance by eliminating Brunswick, Ste-phenson and Houston County in consecutive weeks and in convincing fashion. The Tigers finished 11-2 in both 2012 and 2013 and sit one win away from the school’s first-ever state title appear-ance and 12-win season. Artemus Mitchell leads a Stockbridge backfield that averages more than 220 rushing yards per game and the Tigers will look to put the ball in the hands of their 5-foot-11, 292-pound ball carrier. In the quarterfinals, Stockbridge scored 21 unanswered points in the sec-ond half to stamp a 42-22 win over Houston County. A 73-yard touchdown run by Jajuan Jackson in the second quarter and Mitchell’s 44-yard and 74-yard touchdown runs in the second half, showcased the Tigers’ explosive run game.

NORTHSIDE-WR VS. ALLATOONA Class AAAAA has seen arguably the most dramatic postseason of any classification. Shock-ing upsets filled the first two rounds and out of the four remaining teams, only Northside-Warner Robins has ever reached the semifinals before. Northside has posted at least 10 wins in every season since 1998 and claimed back-to-back state titles in 2006 and 2007 with perfect 15-0 seasons. The Eagles fell 45-37 to region-rival Jones County on Sept. 9, but have won nine straight games including a 31-7 win over Glynn Academy in the quarterfinals. Northside won a crucial coin toss to determine the site of its matchup with top-seeded Allatoona and will host the Bucs riding a 24-game home win streak. However, conditions to the field have moved the game to nearby Mercer University’s stadium. The Eagles have averaged 37 points per game in the postseason and have shown balance within this year’s offense. Quarterback Tobias Oliver feeds a receiving corps led by T.J. Anderson and this connection helped the Eagles build an early lead in the quarterfinals and ice the game with Willie Jordan’s running ability. Jordan racked up 161 yards on 17 carries in the second half and Oliver attempted just one pass. Allatoona is the only undefeated team left in Class AAAAA and has been dominant this postseason with wins over Carver-Atlanta, Coffee and Gainesville. The Bucs will matchup with Northside running back Willie Jordan with the explosive tandem of Richard Halimon and Josh Bettistea. Halimon leads Allatoona with 338 carries for 2,215 yards and 24 touchdowns and Bettistea has chipped in 813 rushing yards and 13 rushing touchdowns. While Bettistea and Halimon attack the defense, wide receiver Zach Nichols pro-duces big plays. Nichols has 10 receiving scores this season and can make teams pay when they decide to key in on stopping the run.

BUFORD VS. CARTERSVILLE Buford visits Cartersville for its first road playoff game since its last trip to Weinman Stadium in 2012. Buford, one of the four semifinalists making its Class AAAA debut, has run synonymous with the word dynasty, having won the last two Class AAA state titles and four of the last five Class AA championships. Cartersville has reemerged over the past three seasons going a com-bined 36-3. The Canes will look to avenge a 21-10 defeat in the semifinals against Buford back in 2012. Buford went on to defeat St. Pius 10-3 in the state championship following the road win over Cartersville. Buford is once again loaded with Division-I talent and quarterback Luke Hum-phrey runs the show. Junior Isaac Nauta is pegged as the fourth-ranked tight end in country for the Class of 2016. Martin Mangram, Xavier Gantt and Joshua Thomas are all difficult to stop on the ground and have plenty of colleges recruiting them. Senior defensive tackle Quay Picou and linebacker Austin Smith are headed to Tennessee. David Curry is headed to Virginia’s secondary while junior Shug Frazier has multiple big schools knocking at his door. Buford has mauled its way to 13-0, outscoring opponents by 37 points per game. Cartersville has also shown dominance in its Class AAAA debut and have not lost since a 27-26 defeat to North Cobb on Sept. 5. The Canes average 41 points per game while allowing just nine points per game. Everything starts with fresh-man quarterback Trevor Lawrence. The 6-foot-4 signal caller is one of the top ranked freshmen in the nation. He has thrown for 2,903 yards and 26 touchdowns this season. Lawrence supplanted Miller Forristall as the team’s starter. The 6-foot-5 Forristall has switched to wide receiver and has been a reliable target. A poised Lawrence led Cartersville to a thrilling victory over Sandy Creek in the quarterfinals when the Canes took their only lead of the game with 20 seconds remaining. Tiamon Pennymon gets the majority of carries for the Canes. Athlete Kalin Heath has committed to Kansas State.

WOODWARD ACADEMY VS. ST. PIUS X A rematch of a Week 2 matchup that saw Woodward Academy take care of the visiting Golden Lions 42-21, St. Pius has caught its stride and has won 11 straight games to finish the sea-son 11-2 and win the Region 6 crown. The War Eagles got the better of St. Pius that day using 156 yards rushing and two touchdowns from junior Elijah Holyfield. Woodward Academy quarterback Jes Sutherland threw for 116 yards and two scores in the victory over St. Pius. The War Eagles use a balanced attack of both run and pass that has helped them average 34 points per game. Holy-field has run for over 1,450 yards while totaling 30 touchdowns. Sutherland has passed for more than 1,700 yards and 18 touchdowns with just three interceptions. Sutherland found Joshua John-son for an 18-yard score with 43 seconds remaining to knock off North Oconee in a back and forth quarterfinals game. Expect ground-and-pound St. Pius to look for success running the football against a Woodward Academy defense led by four-star safety and Stanford commit Arrington Farrar. Coming in averaging 290 yards per game on the ground, the Golden Lions only managed 170 yards on 40 carries in their loss to Woodward Academy. St. Pius will need to get its leading rusher Dalton Wilson involved in the game early. The senior has 789 yards rushing and 14 touch-downs. Wilson was limited to just one carry for two yards in their previous meeting. Joey Connors is the team’s second leading rusher with 669 yards on the ground. Connors also has taken snaps under center and Ransom Klinger, Grant Holloman, and Reed Egan all have chipped in more than 300 yards rushing this season. The Golden Lions seldom throw the ball, but if they do it is usually Cameron Fannon who is making the play. Fannon leads the team with 10 catches for 247 yards and three touchdowns.

WASHINGTON CO. VS. BLESSED TRINITY Blessed Trinity and Washington County will be squaring off in a rematch of a 2013 quarterfinal showdown, won by Washington County 46-17. A.J. Gray threw for 133 yards, rushed for 84 yards and accounted for two touchdowns in that game to lead the visiting Golden Hawks past Blessed Trinity and ultimately into the championship (lost to Buford). Current junior Milton Shelton paced Blessed Trinity with 146 yards on 19 carries, but the underdogs will have to find more success through the air if they want to avenge their 2013 loss. Conor Davis completed just six of 23 passes and was picked off three times by Washington County, which has home-field advantage this time around after win-ning a coin toss last weekend. As impressive as Gray was last year, he has taken his talents to new heights in 2014. The Georgia Tech commit rushed for 1,161 yards and 20 touchdowns during the regular season while throwing for 1,278 yards and 17 scores. He made up for five interceptions by picking off five passes from his safety position, returning four to the endzone. Gray ran 17 times for an incredible 442 yards and eight touchdowns in the Golden Hawks’ 62-35 quarterfinal victory over Pierce County. Four of his eight scores came from more than 50 yards away. Washington County is averaging 53 points per game this year and has scored more than 70 three times. Blessed Trinity’s defense, however, is a force in its own right. The Titans boast three shutouts this year, have limited opponents to single-digits six times, held fellow semifinalist Westminster to 11 and kept Jefferson to a season-low 21 in the quarterfinals. They are led by linebackers Pat Jasinski and Logan Craighead and defensive end Joe Camacho. Also a standout tight end, Jasinski will be crucial in the Titans’ ef-fort to find success against a Washington County secondary that befuddled them last year.

CALHOUN VS. WESTMINSTER Calhoun churns out state semifinal appearances like clockwork; Westminster is making its first trip to the final four since 1996. One reason for the Wildcats’ drought was none other than Calhoun, as the Yellow Jackets ousted Westminster in the second round in both 2008 (38-20) and 2010 (36-19). This has been a season of script-flipping for the Wildcats, however, so they could be poised for revenge. They scored their first win since 2011 over arch-rival and 2013 Class AA state champion Lovett and their 27-10 defeat of previously-undefeated Central-Carroll put them in the quarterfinals for the first time since 2003. New single-season rushing record-holder Zay Malcome, a sophomore, has been the focal point of the offense all year. That was especially the case last week against Hart County with quarterbacks Rankin Woley and Keller Harper both sidelined due to injuries. Malcome ran in a 34-yard score and threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to account for all of his team’s points. In the last 10 years, Calhoun has two quarterfinal finishes, five runner-ups, one state championship (2011) and now another semifinal showing. This season’s run almost ended in the quarters, but the Jackets held off visiting Elbert County 19-17 last Friday. They won a sloppy game in which they turned the ball over four times, clinching victory in fitting fashion with a safety in the final minutes. Calhoun’s defense has not allowed more than 18 points in a game this season, has two shutouts and six times has limited opponents to single-digits. Un-like Westminster, the Yellow Jackets will frequently take to the air on offense. Dual-threat quar-terback Kaelen Riley attempted 19 passes against Elbert County while throwing for 160 yards and rushing for 85 more. Riley and running back Cole Jackson will be facing a Westminster defense that has been dominant in the playoffs and is led by linemen Charlie Trense and Russell Ude.

BROOKS COUNTY VS. BENEDICTINE Benedictine’s postseason run has relied on a formula that is similar to what the Cadets used for its 8-2 finish in the regular season; an overpowering offense featured alongside a smothering defense. Behind the arm of senior quarterback Stevie Powers, the Cadets have rolled off three convincing wins over Thomasville, Rabun County and defending Class AA state champion Lovett, outscoring the opposition 108-19 during that span. Brad Stewart is one of the state’s most produc-tive wideouts and has paced head coach Danny Britt’s squad with 59 receptions for 1138 yards and 15 touchdowns. At defensive back, Stewart has picked off a team-high five interceptions to go along with 23 tackles. He is joined by seniors Jack Muller and Zach Scott, each having logged over 100 tackles on the season, including a combined 19 tackles for loss. Senior Chance Jackson and sophomores John Kennedy and Chris Harris lead Benedictine’s rushing attack and this trio enters a matchup with a combined 34 touchdowns. For Brooks County, this is not the first time that it has faced a highly-ranked team in 2014. During the regular season, Maurice Freeman’s Trojans fought in losing efforts against the likes of Ware County, Madison County (Fla.) and Fitzgerald. After the loss to Fitzgerald, the Trojans have rattled off five straight victories to make a second straight appearance in the semifinals. The first three rounds have tested Brooks County and each of the three wins has been decided by seven points or less. After squeaking out a 24-17 win over Bacon County, the Trojans followed it with a 21-14 win over upset-minded Washington-Wilkes in the sec-ond round. In the quarterfinals, Brooks County topped Heard County 35-34 where a missed extra point by the Braves proved to be the difference. Quarterback Demontay Jones led the offensive effort last Friday, accounting for all five of Brooks County’s touchdowns (three passing and two rushing). This will be the first-ever matchup between the two schools.

GAC VS. FITZGERALD Fitzgerald is making its first semifinals appearance under third-year head coach Jason Strick-land. The Purple Hurricanes come in with a 12-1 record while recording victories over Brooks County and Macon County this year. Coach Strickland’s squad has won in dominant fashion this year with a 22.2 average margin of victory in its 12 wins. Behind a rushing attack spurred by run-ning back J.D. King and quarterback Gerald Morgan, Fitzgerald has scored 40 or more points in 10 of its contests, including a current streak of seven games since its loss to region-foe Thomasville in mid-October. Morgan is the offensive catalyst for the Purple Hurricanes and has accounted for 2,150 rushing yards and 26 touchdowns, including three straight games of 200-plus yards. He has also completed 45.7 percent of his passes for 1,246 yards and 15 scores. King has made large contributions his sophomore season and has rushed for 1,425 yards with 15 touchdowns. Despite being considered the number one team in Class AA, Greater Atlanta Christian finds itself on the road after losing the coin flip to determine home field advantage. The Spartans enter the semis with a perfect 13-0 record that has seen them earn marquee victories over No. 2 Vidalia, No. 3 Lovett and No. 4 Benedictine. With No. 5 Fitzgerald next on the list, the Spartans look to rely on a suffocating defense that recorded four shutouts during the regular season. Linebacker Tyler Cooksey anchors a defense that has allowed only 11 points per game. Darius Slayton and Micah Abernathy have proven to be game changers on both sides of the ball. Abernathy (a Tennessee-commit) made his offensive impact well known against Vidalia in the quarterfinals as he rushed for 186 yards and three touchdowns. The Spartans are appearing in its second semifinal under head coach Tim Hardy, having previously lost to the Jefferson Dragons 42-14 in 2012.

HAWKINSVILLE VS. MARION COUNTY There will be no secrets between Region 4-A rivals Hawkinsville and Marion County, who are set to face each other for the fourth time since Nov. 1, 2013. Last year, Marion County lost to Hawkinsville 14-10 during the regular season only to hammer the Red Devils 40-7 in a semifinal showdown en route to its first-ever state championship. Hawkinsville hopes the roles are reversed in 2014, as it succumbed to Marion County 13-6 back on Oct. 17. The Red Devils are really the only team to have slowed down Marion County’s offense, which was especially dominant in putting up its two highest point totals of the season in playoff victories over Greenville (52-6) and Mt. Zion-Carroll (53-14). Junior all-purpose star Lorenzo Smothers leads the attack for Marion County. He scored via punt return, rush and reception in his team’s quarterfinal win over Mt. Zion-Carroll and he took an interception to the endzone in last year’s semifinal defeat of Hawkinsville. Smoth-ers is complemented nicely by senior leaders Dustin Eckert, the quarterback, and Johnny Royal, a running back who rushed for 114 yards and two touchdowns last Friday. As usual, this should be a ground-heavy contest that features an intriguing battle between Marion County’s offense and Hawkinsville’s defense. The Red Devils have not given up more than 14 points in a game this season. They were shutting out 2013 runner-up Charlton County in the quarterfinals until the final minute, eventually surviving 12-6 in overtime. Offensively, the charge is led in part by a pair of seniors—quarterback Dakota Sloan and running back Warren Singletary. Hawkinsville is two wins away from its sixth state championship and first since going back-to-back in 2003 and 2004. Marion County has been flying high ever since Mike Swaney took over as head coach in 2010, with a 55-7 overall record and four region titles in five years.

COMMERCE VS. IRWIN COUNTY Three of last year’s four Class A-Public semifinalists are back, with Commerce being the only newcomer. The Tigers had to play Charlton County in the first round of the 2013 tournament and succumbed 35-21. Their defense made sure this time around that there would be no early exit from the playoffs. The unit endured a minor hiccup with a 55-28 win over Lakeview Academy to wrap up the regular season, but that was preceded by two straight shutouts and followed by dominance of Clinch County (seven points allowed) and Calhoun County (another shutout). Sophomore Cole Chancey, who also contributes on offense as a running back, recovered three fumbles against Cal-houn County from his safety position. Fellow two-way starter Will Thomas, another sophomore, stars at fullback and outside linebacker. He had 20 carries for 162 yards and four touchdowns against Clinch County. Commerce can almost make game-changing plays on special teams, an area highlighted by kicker Andres Salgado and return man Grant Mayberry. Irwin County is hoping to go at least one step further than last year, when its first semifinal appearance since 1997 ended with a 34-33 heartbreaker against Charlton County. The Indians have taken the suspense out just about every game against Class A competition this season. That includes a 41-14 revenge rout of Charlton County and a 40-29 win over Dooly County last Friday in a contest that was not as close as the final score suggests (Irwin County led 33-7 in the fourth quarter). Like Commerce’s Caleb Brooks, Zach Tolar of Irwin County is a quarterback who does most of his damage on the ground. At the helm of one of the state’s most unbalanced offenses in terms of run-to-pass ratio, Tolar has capitalized on rare throwing opportunities to toss five touchdown passes so far this season. A vaunted rushing attack also features Ty Hogan, Robert Moore and Jakyron Young.

CALVARY DAY VS. ELCA Calvary Day earns its second straight visit to the state semis after a 35-21 victory over Mt. Pisgah Christian in the quarterfinals. The top-seeded Cavaliers remain undefeated at 12-0 as they are set to play a strong Chargers team. The Cavaliers offense is led by senior running back Robert Heyward. Heyward has picked up 1,157 yards on the ground on 139 carries and has rushed for 19 scores. Quarterback Salvador Calderon passed for 1,012 yards and 13 touchdowns before injuries sidelined him the final game of the regular season. Linebacker Brent Sanders has racked up 46 solo tackles this season and also stepped in at quarterback and threw a touchdown pass to Tyler Kilgore in the quarterfinals. Eagle’s Landing started the season at 0-6, but made the playoffs after going undefeated in region play, and now stands 6-6 overall. The Chargers played the first part of their season without quarterback DJ Hammond and tailback Trevor Gear until the transfers became eligible in October. Eagle’s Landing has cruised into the semifinals having shut out Athens Christian 34-0 in the first round of playoffs and demolishing Prince Avenue Christian 47-17 in the quarterfinals. The offense dominated the Wolverines as DJ Hammond completed all nine passing attempts for 200 yards while Trevor Gear rushed for 102 yards off 14 carries and a touchdown. As a whole, the Chargers compiled 525 yards of total offense against a Prince Avenue Chris-tian squad it defeated in the 2012 Class A-Private Championship. Chargers’ head coach Jonathan Gess’ defense showed its ability, allowing 325 total yards but surrendering just 17 points. The Chargers’ trip to Savannah is a rematch of last year’s semifinals where the ELCA fell short to Cal-vary Day 35-34 in overtime. The winner secures a trip to the Georgia Dome to face the winner of undefeated Mount Paran Christian and Aquinas.

MT. PARAN VS. AQUINAS After knocking out Savannah Christian 35-14 in the Class A-Private quarterfinals, undefeated Mount Paran Christian makes its first-ever trip to the semifinals. The Eagles have been led by an unstoppable running attack that follows lanes paved by 6-foot-9 center Zach Strong. Dorian Walker and Emoni Williams share touches out of the backfield and can score in a variety of ways. In the quarterfinals, Williams returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown before rushing for scores on consecutive snaps in the second half. The Eagles’ first varsity season was in 2008 and the program did not win a playoff game until last year’s 31-24 win over Our Lady of Mercy in the opening round. The team that sent the Eagles home in the second round last year is the same Aquinas team they’ll be facing in the semis. Aquinas held on to a 35-32 win in the quarterfinals last year and Mount Paran will be looking to avoid the same heartbreak felt in last year’s loss. De-spite, Aquinas’ success, Mount Paran cruises into the semis as a projected favorite in the Maxwell computer rankings and is two wins away from becoming the first Cobb County school since 1967 to win a state championship. Aquinas topped Tattnall Square 21-6 in the quarterfinals and cur-rently stands at 12-0. The Irish have not lost a game since 2012, after a 14-0 finish that resulted in the program’s first state title last year against Calvary Day. Senior running back Ruben Garrett put up 273 rushing yards against Tattnall Square last week, giving him a season total of 1,725 rushing yards and 28 touchdowns. The defense improved to hold the Trojans to just six points in after winning a 49-21 shootout in the Region Championship three weeks before the quarterfinal victory. Quarterback Liam Welch has 1,676 total passing yards with 21 passing touchdowns this season. The high-powered Irish offense must keep pace with Mt. Paran to keep their 26-game winning streak in tact and defend their home turf against the hungry Eagles.
