GIFT GUIDE

Shopping is a big part ofthe holiday season, whenfamilies and friends

gather to reconnect and exchangegifts. While the popularity ofshopping online has grown, suchpractices are not always eco-friendly or timely, as gifts boughtonline must be packaged andshipped, wasting valuable re-sources and time that last-minuteshoppers may not have.

The benefits of shopping locally go beyond convenience and the chance to re-duce your carbon footprint. The followingare a few ways that shopping locally thisholiday season can directly benefit yourcommunity and the people who call it home.

Local economyWhen consumers shop locally, they are

putting money back into their local com-munities. Local small businesses may beowned by your neighbors, and it can becomforting to know that your holidayshopping dollars are going to support aneighbor. Local businesses also employ

your neighbors, so shopping local canstrengthen the local economy by creatingjobs that may not exist if you and mem-bers of your community fail to supportlocal small businesses.

Community identityLocal small businesses go a long way

toward creating a neighborhood identity, and that identity can create a strongersense of community among you and yourneighbors. In addition, a unique commu-nity identity can make your town moreattractive to outsiders, and that appealcan improve the value of local real estatewhile also attracting more people to localbusinesses in your neighborhood.

Uniqueness of giftsThe gifts you buy when shopping lo-

cally also can benefit your community.Gifts purchased from small local busi-nesses tend to be more unique, as smallerretailers tend to sell more homemadeitems. Recipients of such items may findsuch gifts more thoughtful than massproduced items, and the uniqueness ofhomemade gifts may encourage the gifts’recipients to visit your community and dosome shopping, further benefitting yourlocal economy.

‘Spirited’ eventcomes to Bath Dec. 5

The holiday season is a time to sharehappy experiences with friends andfamily. But reconnecting with loved onescome the holidays is not always possi-ble, especially when family and friendsare spread out across the country, if notthe globe. Even though these peoplemay not be close geographically, they’restill close in our hearts and, therefore, still on our holiday shopping lists.

Some issues arise when sending giftsto faraway friends and family. Distancenecessitates shipping gifts or makingtravel arrangements. To make thatprocess less complicated, consider thesesuggestions.

• Package gifts wisely. When ship-ping gifts, exercise caution to ensure theitem arrives on time and in one piece. The holiday season is one of the busiesttimes of the year for the shipping indus-try, and packages may endure a fewbumps along the way. For fragile items, use extra packing peanuts, newspaperor other protective wrapping material.Choose the right size package so the giftdoes not move around much inside ofthe box. If the gift is expensive, insurethe package in the event it gets lost ordamaged. Also, you may want to spenda little more money to have the ship-ment tracked and a confirmation sentwhen the package is delivered. This canoffer some peace of mind during a hectictime of year.

• Take advantage of free shipping of-fers. Many retailers offer discounts on

shipping rates during the holiday sea-son. Shop at retailers that offer suchdiscounts, as shipping costs can be exor-bitant depending on the sizes of thepackages being sent. In addition, onlineretailers may allow you to ship the giftdirectly to its recipient, which can helpyou ensure the gift gets to its destina-tion on time.

• Give gift cards and certificates. Giftcards are an easy item to ship, and canbe sent within the regular mail for thecost of a stamp. Certain retailers mayhave digital gift cards or certificatesthat allow buyers to email a special codeto the gift recipient, who can then re-deem the code for a purchase credit. This is a convenient, fast and inexpen-sive way to send holiday wishes.

• Don’t forget about inspections andcustoms procedures. Items shipped outof the country may be delayed by cus-toms inspectors at their ultimate desti-nation. Assume that certain packagesmay be opened or detained, and shipsuch packages early so the gifts still ar-rive on time. Packages that look un-usual or like they’re hiding somethingmay be prone to inspection more so thanothers. Be honest about declarations ofvalue and what is contained in the pack-age. Also, realize certain items, likefruits, vegetables, plants, or seeds, maybe prohibited. Learn the internationalshipping rules for your gift’s destinationprior to sending anything.

Come the holiday season, many peoplefind it’s not just family and friends ontheir shopping lists. Coworkers and ac-quaintances often land on such lists aswell, and it’s not always easy decidingwhat to get those people who aren’t closefriends or family members.

BossGifting the boss is a sensitive subject

and should be dictated by company pro-tocol. If you are the only employee to buyyour boss a gift, it may seem like you aretrying to curry favor. However, if every-one else is gifting and you fail to offer agift, you may be caught off guard.

Some business etiquette experts saythat it is customary for bosses to givegifts to employees but not the reverse. However, employees who are especiallyclose with their bosses or who workclosely with them each day may want tooffer a small token of appreciation.

When selecting gifts for bosses, do not

give anything too personal, such as cloth-ing, perfume or jewelry. Food or gift cardsare a safer bet. Experts say a gift in therange of $10 to $25 is adequate. Chippingin for a gift with other employees may bethe best course of action so you don’t in-spire resentment among coworkers.

Babysitter or nannyCaregivers play important roles in the

lives of children. Once you have found asitter or nanny who you trust, you wantto ensure you keep that person content. If you regularly use a nanny or sitter, money is always a great gift. For a full-time nanny, one week to one month’s payis adequate. For a regular sitter, considera gift equal to two nights’ pay.

Coach or club leaderChildren today are involved in many

different activities, and chances are par-ents’ schedules are filled with sportsgames and practices. A small gift of $10to $20 can show your appreciation to acoach or club leader.
