As we begin the new academic year, I’m reminded of the renewed commitment the Hilbert College community has made to putting student success first. Over the last few years, the faculty and staff have embraced the concept of an engagement model, initially developed by our colleagues at Purdue University, to deliver an educational experience that is student-centered and leads to career and lifelong success.

In May we awarded 17 associate, 245 baccalaureate, and 20 master’s degrees with Sister Ann Marie Hudzina, General Minister of the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph, offering the commencement address. We honored Dr. Charles Ernst who for 15 years has served as the faculty advisor of the H-Files Student Newspaper and most recently as the Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning during his 30+ years of faculty service at Hilbert. It was delightful to also recognize Sister Emily Therese Bloom for her service as a faculty member and more recently for her contributions as a member of the Board of Trustees. As Chairperson Gretchen Wylegala proclaimed Sister Emily is truly a life-long learner, a tireless champion for excellence for higher education, and has inspired students, faculty, staff, and trustees with her commitment to Hilbert College.

We are grateful for the generosity of the participants in our annual golf outing which raised over $100,000 for student scholarships in June. It is vitally important to keep a Hilbert education affordable while minimizing the need for student debt. Your participation in the annual fund and through major gifts is sincerely appreciated and makes a difference in the lives of our students. The Teagle grant we received is also linked to our college affordability and student success goals. The objective is in partnership with St. Bonaventure University, Jamestown Community College, and Erie County Community College to create a seamless transition for transfer students to attend Hilbert after spending a year or two at the community college.

I’d invite you to visit campus for two exciting events this fall. First, is homecoming weekend with the San Damiano Awards presentation on Friday, September 26th. Also, please consider joining the Hilbert Reads program this fall. Our campus community is reading In the Sanctuary of Outcasts and author, Neil White, will be making a campus presentation on October 21st at 7 p.m. in Swan Auditorium.

Thank you for all that you have done to help Hilbert students be successful. Please come back to visit the campus to an event or to just stop by and reconnect with the faculty and staff that make Hilbert such a special place.

HILBERTCOLLEGESmall Community, Great Opportunities

HILBERT ENGAGEMENT

Hilbert College embraces its mission to be a place where “students from diverse backgrounds are educated in liberal arts and professional programs to become informed citizens committed to serving and strengthening their communities.” At the heart of this is an exciting vision of the complete student experience, inside and outside the classroom.

Students achieve greater success and retain knowledge longer when they are actively engaged in their learning. This means participating in a dynamic classroom, where concepts are applied, preconceived notions are challenged, and hands-on experiences reinforce content presented by a highly qualified faculty. It also means providing students with many opportunities to feel connected to the college outside the classroom through clubs, athletic teams, diverse programming including study abroad, and effective advisement and counseling.

Hilbert has structured its programs to allow students to start successfully and build on that beginning through an integrated series of classes and opportunities that result in broad preparation for a fruitful career and meaningful future. In their first year, all students take the Foundations Seminar to acquaint them with the college and provide them the tools they will need as they progress. As sophomores, they are expected to enroll in at least one course that includes a service learning component which provides both experiential learning in the course material and promotes engaged citizenship. The cornerstone of the third year is Hilbert’s nationally-recognized “Junior Symposium.” Centered on global current events, the course acquaints students with the world they will live and work in and allows them to engage in respectful dialogue with people who may hold very different opinions and worldviews. Finally, each degree program features a senior capstone experience appropriate for their discipline. Through an internship, major research project, or an intensive symposium, students get the chance to integrate and reflect on their entire academic career and showcase their preparation to begin their career or further integration.

With the addition of professional Master’s programs, accelerated degree-completion opportunities, and updated curricula, Hilbert College has taken the next steps in its development as an institution providing high quality, relevant education built on a strong foundation of Franciscan values.

HILBERT’S LEGACY

Trusting in God, Colette Hilbert, a remarkable and saintly woman, left her homeland and family at the age of 23 to respond to the needs of Polish immigrants in America.

In 1897 she founded the Congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph and extended her influence in the ministry of education in elementary and secondary schools for generations.

It was in 1957 that the Franciscan Sisters founded Hilbert College where Mother Colette’s strong faith, concern for others and respect for the unique value of each person, still reflect her guiding principle - “in all things love.”

A CATHOLIC, FRANCISCAN COLLEGE

Franciscanism dates back to the 12th century in the tiny Italian village of Assisi from the work of one man: St Francis of Assisi. He was more than a saint - he was a prisoner and soldier who possessed a magnanimity of spirit.

The son of a wealthy merchant, Francis’ prosperous, rebellious life changed one day with a chance meeting of a leper. Rather than shun this social outcast, as he and so many others had done in the past, Francis embraced him. The gesture led Francis to a life of service to God.

Soon after his conversation, Francis was praying before the crucifix at San Damiano when he heard Christ speak: “Francis, go and repair my house.”

A man of action, Francis began repairing chapels, financing his work by selling family possessions. Disowned by his father and jeered by the masses, Francis remained focused on his mission. He soon realized that God was speaking not of physical buildings, but the spiritual Church and souls of people.

Francis’ belief in preaching by living the gospel message attracted devoted followers whose lives were changed, eventually leading to the founding of the Franciscan Order.

Although Francis lived only to the age of 44, his message of a life of simplicity and the power of prayer has never faded. Today, St. Francis is a symbol of spiritual love, guidance and hope. His ideals of peace and healing live on at Hilbert.

FIRST YEAR EXPERIENCE/FOUNDATIONS SEMINAR

All incoming freshman are required to participate in the First-Year Experience and the Foundations Seminar. This is designed to get all students acquainted with the college experience and includes participation in a minimum of four ‘passport’ activities on campus. All first year students will participate in the Hilbert College Reads program. Each student will receive a complimentary copy of the year’s selected text and potentially have an opportunity to meet the author.

SOPHOMORE SERVICE

Students are obligated to take one course with a service-learning requirement. Service-learning requirements are unique to each class. In some classes, the entire class may work together on one single project that benefits the community and meets a community need. In other courses, students may be provided the opportunity to complete a service-learning activity by selecting an organization or project from a list of pre-approved community partners and activities. These activities are linked to the classroom curriculum and help meet a need in the community.

JUNIOR SYMPOSIUM

Three professors from different disciplines teach the mandatory Junior Symposium course which encourages students to follow current events and introduces The New York Times as daily reading. Juniors engage in active debates and student-led discussions, which encourage participants to disagree civilly.

SENIOR CAPSTONE

The Hilbert College Blueprint culminates with the Senior Capstone. Unique to each department, the capstone could be – but is not limited to – a project, internship, or research paper. The Senior Capstone is designed to synthesize the student’s four-year educational experience and support the college’s mission to produce ‘informed citizens committed to serving and strengthening their communities.’

The 24th Annual Hilbert College Scholarship Golf Tournament at Orchard Park Country Club was Hilbert’s most successful golf tournament in its 24-year history with net proceeds donated exceeding $100,000 for the first time.

Thanks to the leadership of the golf tournament chair, Ann Swan, Executive Director of the William E. and Ann L. Swan Foundation, and primary sponsors: NOCO, GEICO, Goya, Ingram Micro, and West Herr Automotive Group, direct scholarship support over the last two years from the tournament has grown by over $25,000. This event has raised over $1.1 million over its history.

All of the money raised at the golf tournament goes to scholarships for deserving students which helps to keep Hilbert College the most affordable four-year, private college in Western New York.

Hilbert President Cynthia Zane addressed the nearly 200 golfers and guests. “Thanks to the generous support that our golf tournament has received this year,” she said, “we will be able to continue to provide Hilbert students with the scholarships they deserve and help to decrease their burden.”

Thank you to all who participated or sponsored the event, especially the major event sponsors: L.P. Ciminelli, Inc.; Freed Maxick CPA’s, PC; Gernatt Asphalt Products, Inc.; Inergex Inc.; Labatt Blue; M&T Bank; Multisorb Technologies, Inc.; Ann L. Swan; and Wells Fargo Bank.

Hilbert College is a private, residential Franciscan college located in the Town of Hamburg, about 10 minutes south of Buffalo, New York. The college is named after Mother Colette Hilbert, foundress of the Franciscan Sisters of Saint Joseph, the congregation that established the school in 1957. Hilbert College is a four-year coeducational liberal arts college and currently enrolls approximately 1,100 students.

Hilbert College, founded on the principles of the Catholic faith and the Franciscan philosophy of the Franciscan Sisters of Saint Joseph (FSSJ), was established under the vision and leadership of Sister Mary Edwina Bogel. Originally affiliated with the Catholic University of America, it was named the Immaculata Teacher Training School, and its first classes were offered to nine FSSJ sisters at the FSSJ Motherhouse in Hamburg.

Sister Edwina was named the first president and dean of the college. In 1960, the name of the institution was changed to Immaculata College; in 1969 it was renamed Hilbert College in memory of Mother Colette. Lay

women were first admitted to the college in 1964. It became coeducational in 1969.

Fueled by the changes in admission policy, enrollment reached 407 by the fall of 1969, more than double the previous year’s enrollment, and topped 500 a year later. To make room for the new students, ground was broken in 1967 for a new campus adjacent to the Franciscan Sister Motherhouse. In the fall of 1969, the Academic Building and McGrath Library were opened, while the St. Joseph Residence Hall and Campus Center were formally dedicated in May 1970.

Sister Edwina retired as president in 1973, and the Academic Building was renamed Bogel Hall in her honor. Sister Edmunette Paczesny was named president in 1974 and would lead the college through more great changes over the next three decades.

The biggest transition came in 1992 as Hilbert moved to a four-year bachelor’s degree-granting college. Hilbert also began partnerships with other educational providers, entering into agreements with St. Bonaventure University to offer a master’s degree and certification at the Hamburg campus and one with D’Youville College that offers graduate-level classes to Hilbert seniors.

During her 32 years as president, Sister Edmunette oversaw several major capital improvements. Among the new construction projects: the Hafner Recreation Center (1979), four apartment-style residence buildings (2003), an administration building (Franciscan Hall, in 1997), the

430-seat Swan Auditorium (2006) and a new academic building named in her honor, Paczesny Hall (2006).

Enrollment continued to rise, though at a much slower rate. The student body topped 1,000 students for the first time in 2003.

Sister Edmunette retired from the presidency in 2006. Cynthia Zane, a trained nurse who previously served as the dean of the faculty at the College of Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati, became Hilbert’s third president and its first lay president later that year.

In 2009, Hilbert opened Trinity Hall, the college’s first new residence hall in nearly 40 years. Hilbert added its first graduate programs - in public administration and criminal justice administration - in 2011, and began offering accelerated bachelor’s degree programs in conflict studies & dispute resolution and organizational development for adult learners in 2012.
