Why am I such a misfit? I am notjust a nitwit. Just because my noseglows... why dont I fit in?

Rudolph heartbreakingly laments his friendshiptroubles outside his den ater the Reindeer Gamessaw him laughed at and shunned because of his

bright, shiny nose. It has turned out to be some-what ironic that Rudolph had dificulty makingfriends early in life, as millions of people over fivedecades have fallen in love with one of televisionsmost iconic Christmas characters.

The oddball reindeer actually came from humblebeginnings on the pages of a Montgomery Wardcoloring book in 1939. Penned by staf copywriterRobert L. May, the plucky reindeer went throughmuliple names Rollo and Reginald, to name a

couple before he became Rudolph, and Mont-gomery Ward ended up selling over two millioncopies of the coloring book that year.

Rudolph didnt make the jump to television rightaway, though. Ten years ater May wrote the story,he approached his brother-in-law, songwriter JohnnyMarks, who then adapted it into a song. It was duringthe 1949 holiday season that Gene Autrys Rudolphthe Red-Nosed Reindeer topped charts, marking thefirst step in Rudolphs ascension to popularity.

Enter Rankin/Bass Producions. Founded in Sep-

tember 1960 by Arthur Rankin, Jr. and Jules Bass,the film producion company got to work rightaway, pitching Hollywood bigwigs their animaiontechnique called Animagic.

Their first project was Rudolph, and it was thespecial that launched Rankin/Bass to success in theholiday television market. Oddly enough though,Rudolph almost didnt happen.

In America they used to say Go West, youngman to people seeking their fortunes, Rankin saidonce, as reported by Bernews.com. Well, I followedthat advice and had every door in Hollywoodclosed in my face when I pitched the concept ofRudolph back in the early 60s. No one was inter-ested.

So Rankin/Bass kept going West and ended upin Japan, where Rudolph and many of their otherholiday specials were crated. The studio in Japanhad the technology available to make Rudolphthe way Rankin/Bass wanted to create it, and therest went down in history.

Now, 50 years later, Rudolph the Red-NosedReindeer is a Christmas insituion. The 55-minute

producion is the highest-rated and longest-run-ning television special of all ime, airing mostlyon CBS and its afiliates muliple imes over theholiday season.

Of course, everyone knows the story of Santasninth reindeer, so theres no need to rehash it. Butwhen you look at the narraive and really dissect

its meaning, you can see how this account of acouple of misfits has stood the test of ime.

Rankin/Bass Producions used Rudolph, Hermeyand their eccentriciies to send a message to kidsof all ages that its ok to be diferent. Its possible toachieve great things even if youre the underdog.

American Television. I think all kids feel slightlyinferior. Kids have problems, whatever they maybe, and to see other characters that also have prob-lems, they can associate with them.

Kids love to see someone of their own stripe,their own age or their own inferiority achieve

things. It makes them feel good, he coninued. Ithink thats probably the reason these films lastso long because in all our films that happens. Thebad guy becomes the good guy at the end, hesreformed, and the underdog fulfills his quest.

While the universal feel-good story does definite-ly lend to Rudolphs longevity, its also the catchymusic sprinkled throughout the show that makes ita imeless classic.

Johnny Marks, the writer of the original Ru-

dolph song and Rankins neighbor when theyboth lived in Greenwich Village, was brought in byRankin/Bass to compose the enire soundtrack forthe TV special. From the love ballad Theres Al-ways Tomorrow to the perky A Holly Jolly Christ-mas, the songs are as enduring as the show itself.

It also helps the music when you have a name likeBurl Ives beling out tunes and narraing the story.The legendary American actor and singer brought acertain life to the words and melody of the specialscarols, including Silver and Gold and A Holly JollyChristmas, and his character Sam the Snowman even bears a striking resemblance to him.

Another thing that made Rudolph stand out,especially at the ime, was the use of what Rankin/Bass coined as Animagic. Typically in stop mo-ion, filmmakers would use clay to create charac-ters and setings, animaing them by molding andshaping the diferent pieces. With Animagic, wire-jointed dolls were used instead, with each piecemoved on the joint for each frame.

Because of the nature of stop-moion animaion,the filming of Rudolph took quite a while to com-plete. Animagic was new and exciing at the ime,but in an interview with the Washington Post in2004, Rankin insisted the show was about morethan just the animaion technique, saying, Its thestory, the characters, the music. We knew what weneeded: warmth. Rudolph showed us that.

Undoubtedly, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeerhas shown us many things. First and foremost, ithas proven that even a spunky, misfit reindeer cancapture the hearts and minds of children of all agesfor five decades.

Sadly, with ime comes some sorrow, and thisChristmas will be a little duller ater Arthur RankinJr. passed away in January, but his legacy lives oneach ime Rudolph and the gang spring onto our TVsets. For Rankin, he wouldnt have it any other way.

Mystery flipper: The Santa Clause (1994)

There are few things that beat a good bed-ime story, especially on Christmas Eve. In ascene from this family favorite Santa film,Scott Calvin (Tim Allen) is reading his son

Charlie (Eric Lloyd) a Christmas story,and during the part about a reindeer, thebooks let page changes... except the pagewas never turned! Originally the page is apicture of a man opening a window, then itinexplicably changes to a page with wriingand a diferent image.

OT oversight: Grumpy Old Men (1993)

While this might not be the first Christmas movie you think of thisime of year, the Jack Lemmon/Walter Matthau lick comes to a headover the holiday season. In one scene, Max (Matthau) and John (Lem-mon) are at the bait shop discussing their Thanksgiving plans. Itshere that they ask Chuck (Ossie Davis) if he saw the Chicago Black-hawks hockey game, saying that it went to double overime. Theresonly one problem: NHL games only go to double OT if its a playofgame in April.

Hold your applause: Die Hard (1988)This Oscar-nominated Bruce Willis movie is a Christmas classic.

Its also a classic for a couple silly slip-ups! Hollys (Bonnie Bedelia)ofice holds a Christmas party, and when Takagi (James Shigeta) givesa speech, the room breaks out in raucous applause. If you actuallywatch the employees, however, youll noice that no one is really clap-ping.

Mi di spiace!: Love Actually (2003)

Ater Jamie (Colin Firth) catches his girlfriend cheaing on him, hetravels to his French cottage to be alone, and its there that he firstmeets Aurelia (Lcia Moniz), who only speaks Portuguese. In Jamiesawkward attempt to communicate with this lovely lady, he bumbles,

Molto bueno. Eleonore (Elisabeth Margoni), who dropped ofAurelia, tells him that hes speaking Spanish, but molto is actuallyItalian.

Sorry, Mr. President!: Miracle on 34th Street (1947)

We all know Santa is a busy guy, but for a man who delivers pres-ents to every child in the world, youd think hed know everyonesnames! Kris Kringle (Edmund Gwenn) is being tested in one scene,

and hes asked to name President John Quincy Adams vice president.Kris says its Daniel D. Thompkins, but hes wrong. John C. Calhounwas actually Adams vice president, and Thompkins was PresidentJames Monroes vice president.

Somebodys fabulous!: How the Grinch StoleChristmas (2000)

On one visit to Whoville, the Grinch(Jim Carrey )begins to wreak havoc on the Whos

Christmas is a ime of warmth, familytogetherness and goodwill towards onesfellow man. Its also inarguably a ime for

shiny new toys, as any kid on the nice list will bequick to inform you.

What franchise could transfer more readily into

the season of giving (and geting!) than Toy Story?Since the first film in the Pixar trilogy broughtsmiles to the faces of children and adults alikenearly 20 years ago, young Andys toys have goneon to feature in two sequels, three animated shorts,an animated spinof film and series, a pile of videogames and, as of this holiday season, two televisionspecials.

The first of these specials, Toy Story of Terror!,is Halloween-based and first aired last October on

ABC. Like the films, the special was well-receivedby audiences and drew in favorable reviews fromcriics, proving that, 18 years ater the original filmwas released, the Toy Story franchise sill hadntrun out of steam.

By all reports, the upcoming television specialpromises to deliver the same high quality of hu-mor, story and character development as its ever-growing list of forerunners. Toy Story That TimeForgot places the playthings weve come to knowand love right where toys belong: the Christmas

season. This eagerly anicipated latest installmentin the Toy Story world premieres Tuesday, Dec. 2,on ABC.

Toy Story That Time Forgot actually takes placeshortly ater Christmas, when Bonnie (Emily Hahn,Wreck-It Ralph, 2012), the little girl who becamethe new owner of Andys toys at the end of ToyStory 3 (2010), heads to a playdate at a pals house.

Here, the Toy Story gang encounters a line ofgladiator-like dinosaur acion figures called Battle-saurs, which come with impressive playsets andare led by the confident and sophisicated RepillusMaximus (Kevin McKidd, Greys Anatomy).

Unfortunately, the Battlesaurs harbor Buzz

Lightyear-esque delusions and dont realize theyretoys despite their recently opened packagingstrewn about the room, sill festooned with bitsof hasily-torn wrapping paper. Though hosile to-wards the majority of the interlopers, the cool newacion figures recognize Bonnies dinosaur toys Rexthe T-Rex (Wallace Shawn, The Princess Bride,1987) and Trixie the triceratops (Kristen Schaal, 30

Rock) as members of their own kind, going so faras to suit them up in some of their rad battle gear.

Its really Trixie who takes the forefront in thisstory, so itll be great to see one of the previoussupporing characters in a leading role. Its up tothe quirky triceratops to get herself and her friends

away from the Battlesaurs clutches and back to thesafety of Bonnies room.

Old favorites will be back as well, including Buzz(Tim Allen, Home Improvement), Woody (TomHanks, The Green Mile, 1997), Jessie (Joan Cusack,High Fidelity, 2000) and Mr. Potato Head (DonRickles, CPO Sharkey), plus another new character,a Christmas ornament called Angel Kitty (Cusack).

This Oscar nominated holiday classic has stood the test of ime, butat one point in the movie, an inebriated Uncle Billy (Thomas Mitch-ell) is having a bit of trouble standing himself. As he wishes George(James Stewart) a good night and stumbles of screen, you hear acrash and then Uncle Billy says, Im alright. It turns out that thecrash was actually a crew member dropping equipment during film-ing, but director Frank Capra thought it improved the sound so hekept it in.

Wings n things: Its a Wonderful Life (1946)

The line Every ime a bell rings an angel gets his wings is arguablyone of the most iconic quotes from a Christmas movie ever. George(James Stewart) smiles when his daughter says it at the end of thefilm, as it means Clarence (Henry Travers) finally got his guardian an-gel wings ater over 200 years without them. If you listen closely overthe course of the enire movie, youll actually hear 42 bells ringing,meaning 42 angels got their wings.

Sisters?: White Christmas (1954)

Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye play Bob and Phil, respecively, inthis imeless musical movie, and the Sisters comedy act they per-formed in the film was not iniially in the script. The director caughtCrosby and Kaye goofing around on the set and wrote it in because he

thought it was so funny.

I know you...: Elf (2003)

Though he went uncredited, at the beginning of the movie PeterBillingsley a.k.a Ralphie from A Christmas Story (1983) playsMing Ming the elf in Santas workshop. Peter Dinklage also makesan appearance as Miles Finch, a bestselling childrens writer, betterknown as The Angry Elf.

Watch your mouth!: Home Alone (1990)

Joe Pesci had one heckuva ime trying to con-trol his tongue in this family comedy. Knownfor far more serious roles like Tommy DeVitoin Goodfellas (1990), Pesci would regularly,unintenionally swear while filming the an-grier scenes. Director Chris Columbus even-tually suggested Pesci use the word fridge

instead of the other F-word.

All aboard: The Polar Express (2004)

Two-ime Academy Award winner Tom Hanks voiced six charactersin the movie: Father, Hero Boy, Conductor, Scrooge, Hobo and SantaClaus. The Conductor even bears a slight resemblance to Hanks.
