ArtsKC Fund Grant Recipients Impact on KC
Town Halls For OneArtsKC
Ovation Recipient: KCFAAKansas City Friends of Alvin Ailey (KCFAA) is making dance accessible to all people and provides year-round programming, including their signature AileyCamp. KC area youth are exposed to ballet, jazz, modern dance, and much more. “Whether or not they can dance is not important; it’s how they apply themselves! The transformation is amazing, and it’s an inspiration to all of us!” says Shannon Morford, KCFAA Marketing Manager.
Through involvement with ArtsKC, they strengthen their voice. Funding enables them to serve the areas that may not otherwise have exposure to the arts, and bring together people from diverse social and economic backgrounds.kcfaa.org
Catalyst Recipient: Senior Barn PlayersThe Senior Barn Players provide senior citizens the enjoyment of performing. The energy and enthusiasm senior adults display is incredibly inspiring. Almost all audiences are seniors who appreciate seniors entertaining them with words and music.
ArtsKC’s support has helped The Senior Barn Players not only financially but has told them that what they are doing is valuable to the community. It has created an awareness of what they are doing to promote the arts in Kansas City. It enables them to expand their vision to be seniors helping seniors.seniorbarnplayers.com
ArtsKC hosted Town Halls across the region for OneArtsKC - Regional Cultural Plan.
“It has become crystal clear that the strength of this plan is contingent on the engagement and input we receive. This is your opportunity to help us create something that has never existed before. We need to hear from a broad range of diverse communities. We want you represented so that your handprint can be a part of the
Inspiration Recipient:John RauxVisual Artist John Raux received funding to attend a residency program at Takt Kunstprojektraum in Berlin, Germany. Before ArtsKC, Raux had been producing and curating artwork and cultural events for more than ten years, but he was searching for new direction.

The arts have blossomed in ways many of us never imagined even ten years ago. This is the time for the arts in the Kansas City region and ArtsKC is making the most of it. Now Showing fosters partnerships between artists and businesses. The program gives area artists opportunities to display work in local companies.
Joy Baer, a fresco artist, has been involved with the program since 2009. Joy became intrigued after first hearing about it from fellow artists who appreciated the new venues to showcase their art. Her goal was to bring frescoes back to today’s public spaces,
homes, and businesses. “I’ve met
a wide variety of people working
at businesses I wouldn’t have had
access to prior to ArtsKC,” shares
Baer. “New work and commissions
from these individuals continue
to grow.” When asked about the
experiences she has had and
how it has inspired her work she
shared, “I’ve seen people in labs
looking for cures for cancer, the
financial world, architects planning
a school, interior designers
creating public spaces, this list
is endless… Each exhibition has
encouraged me to expand my
fresco work a bit ‘wider’.”

Artist INC Expands its Reach Outside KC

Since its launch in 2009, Artist INC has continued to connect Kansas City area artists of all disciplines to the tools necessary to develop their entrepreneurial skills. Artist INC is run in partnership with Charlotte Street Foundation and the UMKC Innovation Center.
Programs take some of the mystery and fear out of the business end of a fine arts practice. To date, Artist INC has helped more than 2,346 artists through its suite of local and Midwest-region Artist INC activities, including Artist INC Live workshops, Artist INC Collegiate workshops, and reFRESH and Third Space series.
In partnership with Mid-America Arts Alliance (M-AAA), Artist INC has expanded programming to the Argenta Arts District in North Little Rock, Arkansas and the Oklahoma Visual Artist Coalition in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. M-AAA will also launch two more Artist INC Live programs in Omaha, Nebraska and Austin, Texas in the fall of 2014.
Similar to Kansas City, the programs in other cities bring together a group of participants selected in a competitive process. Artist INC Live is open to professional artists of all disciplines and career stages. More information is available at ArtistINCKC.com.
