PRESIDENTS REPORT JULY 2014

June saw two well attended Toodyay focused runs led by Ivan and yours truly. The highlight, or perhaps lowlight, was Mal’s run in with a Kangaroo in the Brigadoon Hills. A not too large (thankfully) roo jumped in front of Mal as we travelled up Campersic Road. All ended well for Mal’s body but unfortunately not for his motorbike’s body. More of that story elsewhere in the magazine. It does beg the question though, should we have a protocol for sightings of Kangaroos and should we include it in our Riot Act. I will invite discussions on this at our July meeting. The country side has really greened up with all the good May and June rainfall, so travelling anywhere now really does present a beautiful landscape. Looking forward to seeing many riders out and about on our July Runs

Editors Report

This month includes articles with photos from both the rides held during June. They both went to Toodyay as the destination but used entirely different roads to get in and out. The weather wasn’t bad for this time of year on both rides. Hopefully this month will be as nice but I fear the imminent rides are tempting the weather gods by heading south, not too far though (Pinjarra). Please keep sending in photos, articles or anything else you would like to share with the rest of the Club. Ivan

June Club Run

I did a pre-run for this only the Monday before, on the long weekend. It was cold at first, until I got about half way to Beverly where the fog was waiting and it got colder. Visibility was still about 150 metres though. Anyhow, the Sunday of the ride was a clear improvement. Cool enough to remind you it’s winter though.

We all showed up at the start point, the mini Macca’s in Kelmy. Eric was a little apprehensive about his first ride organiser duties; TEC on a Club Run, so he got there early and selected a good patch of ground for the bikes to park upon. This was great until the SAAB club arrived, of all things. They were there by the time I arrived.

Eric’s bagsing of three bays was rudely overwhelmed in a matter of seconds (that was the one he is IN plus the surrounding ‘courtesy to bikers’ spaces). Then to top it off they swamped the meet point and grabbed the group table that I was unable to book as a reservation unless I was hosting a party for ten happy meals. We had to scatter our parking and scatter through the remaining tables of the store.

Eventually we watched the SAABers depart from the carpark without a word spoken between us.

After reciting the Riot Act from memory somebody mentioned it should be on the running

sheet, so I checked and sure enough it was there, which reminded me of being staggered.

Hans was having flashbacks to crazy visitor corner marking procedures so was eager to

remind me to be very clear to our visitor regarding the corner marking system. Ian seemed to

be comfortable with the system from the first time I told him but he was polite enough to reply

the same on about the third time.

July 2014 Open Road Motorcycle Touring Club Page 7

Off we went via the Brookton Highway. Straight up the group got split so I’m checking my mirrors for about five minutes. We took about another 40 minutes to get to the next turn, in the middle of nowhere so we kept going to Beverly, sans fog. We stopped in front of the town hall, that Fred reminded us was one of the quiz locations on the Awards Night. There

was a smaller group of bikes that met just up and across the road so maybe there’s life in the town. Most of us wandered around the back of the hall at some stage for a wiz, convenience.

At this stop I got to talk to Ian about his Harley. Before you Gasp! This was one of the fast ones, in black. Ian told me how virtually the whole top surface of the bike has been customised. The instrument display wasn’t wanted on the handlebars with the new headlights so it was moved atop the tank. Front and rear fenders, tail lights and other bits and pieces as well. It seemed happy to cruise along at a gentle club pace if not ready for more too.

The leg stretch was ended and we

departed for the second time. There’s two

roads to York and we took the Top’ one.

Green as grass this time of year. It takes

no time to get between the towns of

Beverly, York and Northam. It’s all open

country roads with not enough turns and a

few too many bumps, it’s also only about

35 kilometres between each. Fuel was the

excuse for our next stop at the 170

kilometre mark, Caltex Northam. This

proceeded in a rather orderly fashion

considering this Sunday mid-morning had

just become rush hour with football fans

everywhere in their banged up

commodores – more clubs.

Open Road Motorcycle Touring Club July 2014 Page 8

We departed for a third time, straight ahead along the road we came in on, crossed the lights, the river and through town to the top of the hill. Turn right here (Newcastle St) and it will take you to Toodyay Road.

I love this section of road. It isn’t as bumpy as the first bit and the scenery is more to my liking. It just all happens to be over too soon. We turn right at the end towards Toodyay. This is a slow traffic area so the approach seemed like a regroup on the way in. I knew where to park near the cafe at the close end of town so there was no confusion there, also an overflow park off the street. We visited Wendouree Tea Rooms.

The breakfast menu had finished so it was a selection of fish and chips, burgers, toasted sandwiches and Turkish bread etc. I’d recommend it as an alternative to the Cola Cafe end of town. The weather was warm enough for us to choose a table outside, a far cry from my frigid pre-run the other day.

We departed for a fourth time, back the same way but the Clackline Road. This is a cool road but a bit bumpy in places. As long as you learn the existence of the couple of turns around the Clackline end you shouldn’t get lost. It’s still a little way into Perth from here on some of the most ordinary sections of Great Eastern Highway available.

Originally I thought we might finish at Mundaring but Fred had an important appointment with a vanilla slice at Bakers Hill so we decided to score and conclude the ride there. After a short while I was ready to roll.

Back onto the Great Eastern Highway for the duel carriageway. I actually like this bit of road

because there’s little opportunity for cameras to hide and it is so spacious. No stop at Mundaring but turn left and its about 60 kilometres of riding back through the Perth Hills to my place.

Thanks to everybody that came along, especially Eric for TEC and Ian as a visitor.

ORMTC RIDE REPORT SOCIAL RUN 22

nd June 2014

Social Run with Fred and “Roo Boy” Mal. Knowing to allow one hour from Mosman Park to Stratton it was with some relief to see no rain about at 7.30am. No rain, that is, until 30 seconds into the ride to our start point. Steady soaking rain followed me all the way until about 5 minutes before arrival. Winter! Eight riders turned up for this Social Run – Fred, Mal, Mal’s brother Steve, Peter, Geoff, Russell, Hans and the almost late Ivan. We headed for breakfast at Toodyay along Campersic Road into the hills at Brigadoon. Both Hans and I spotted a group of three small roos near the top of Campersic Road, but little did we think they would have the temerity to jump out in front of our Tail End Charlie Mal. After travelling along Connemara Rd through to

O’Brien Road we reached the turn off to Toodyay Road where we stopped for a stretch and to allow everyone to regroup. Ivan, Geoff, Hans and I waited for at least 15 minutes in misty rain before we thought something may be amiss. Ivan volunteered to head back to see if there were any problems. No sooner he left that Mal and the others turned up with Mal sporting some very nice bright blue taping holding his headlight fairing together.

July 2014 Open Road Motorcycle Touring Club Page 13

One of those pesky roos had indeed jumped into the path of Mal’s bike whilst travelling at about 70 ks. Luckily for Mal it wasn’t a large animal and he was OK, but the same couldn’t be said for the fairing. After telling us all the story Mal declared it was time to head off for breakfast where he’d very much prefer a stiff drink to a coffee! A very uneventful dry and

sunny ride into Toodyay followed. We had breakfast at the Wendouree Tea Rooms where Ivan had taken us only a couple of weeks before. We first tried the Victoria Hotel which had a nice dining room all in readiness but sadly the cook was out shopping! We came home by the tried and true Julimar Road and Chittering Valley Roads, and I must say the green scenery was just stunning. Another coffee and orange juice stop was held at Golden Grove Café and Orchard where some of us bought some very nice looking home-made sauces and preserves. Our short and sweet ride ended at

Bullsbrook from where riders headed

in various directions and routes

home.
