While breaks from school should be fun, they don’t have to be breaks from learning. The down time of the holiday season is the

perfect time of year to keep kids entertained with books.

With the recent adoption of the Common Core State Standards, which set expectations for what students should be learning so they will be college and career ready, children of all ages will be expected to read more non-fiction.

“As a parent, you can play an important role in helping your children meet the Common Core State Standards while on break,” says Donna Elder, senior literacy specialist for the National Center for Family Literacy (NCFL). “By using fiction and their interests as a springboard for informational reading, you can make this a fun experience.”

Elder is providing reading ideas to feed your children’s interests. It’s all about offering them books on subjects in which you already know they are interested:

• For example, if your child enjoyed “The Cricket in Times Square” by George Selden, you can help foster his or her interest in crickets with “Insectiopedia” by Douglas Florian, “Chirping Crickets” by Melvin Berger, or “Cricket”s by Cheryl Coughlan.

• After reading “The Snow Child: A Russian Folktale” retold by Freya Littledale, follow up by encouraging your child to read about the science of weather with “The Kids’ Book of Weather Forecasting” by Mark Breen and Kathleen Friestad or “Weather” by Seymour Simon.

• Teens who couldn’t put down “The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins may be interested in learning more about the origins and history of real athletic competitions. Start with “The Olympics: A History of the Modern Games” by Allen Guttmann.” Or entertain a newfound interest in the outdoors with “The Ultimate Survival Manual” by Rich Johnson or a field guides to birds.

• Is your child interested in baseball? From historical accounts like “Baseball: A History of America’s Favorite Game” by George Vecsey to a book that explains how bats are made, such as “Good Wood: The Story of the Baseball Bat,” by Stuart Miller, you can help kids score an academic homerun.

• Inspire the inner chef in your children and test their ability to follow instructions with “Kids’ Fun and Healthy Cookbook,” by Nicola Graimes. Or opt for a picture-book biography like, “Bon Appetit! The Delicious Life of Julia Child” by Jessie Hartland.

Don’t let “educational” and “boring” mean the same thing in your household. By seeking out reading material that engages your children on their level on subjects that are meaningful to them, you can help them meet the Common Core State Standards, while having a very merry holiday season.

AURA HEWITT’S LIFE is high-tech and low-tech at the same time. As a deaf person, she said, she relies on machines, such as hearing aids and laptops, to communicate. She’s a Linux OS user and program-mer, has built her own computer, and started creating websites back when you had to know HTML to do it. But her home in Funny River is rustic and heated en-tirely by its woodstove, surrounded by natural beauty.

“I’m intrigued by the juxtapositions,” she said. The juxtapositions guide her pottery work. Some of the designs feature stamped-in binary code de-signs, or mathematical equations. “I enjoy using high tech binary decoratively on the ancient ‘low’ craft of pottery.”

Many of her pottery designs have an unconventional shape, or appear inten-tionally off-kilter, not quite perfect but still beautiful. The glazes are evocative of old bone and charcoal.

Hewitt said she’s worked in ceramics on and off since 1984 and that her work has been in more than 200 shows. She’s been steadily producing wheel-thrown pottery since 2002.

HEN ANCHORAGE artisan Laura Kripp’s daughter was little, she received a handmade

doll from France that Kripp said was “lovely in its simplicity.” The doll was lost after falling out of a backpack, however, and decided to make some-

thing like it.“My inspiration was in trying to recreate its tactile

appeal in similarly simple forms for young children,” Kripp said.Through her small business, Willow Designs, Kripp

makes and sells girl, boy, and Alaska animal dolls out of upcycled cotton and felted wool from old clothing.

“I choose fabrics that feel good to touch and are visually pleasing to the eye,” Kripp said. “The dolls are made with love and good intentions, and I hope that this energy provides comfort to the little people they find.”

AUREN PADAWER was taking a lunch break on the shore during a rafting trip down the Copper River when she saw a beautiful pool of clear water. When she stepped in, she said, her bare feet descended into a rich, buttery, fine glacial silt.

Padawer had worked in a spa. Curious about the properties of Copper River glacial silt, she researched its composition to find out how it compared to thera-peutic muds on the market.

The Cordova resident found that her local glacial silt mud was unique in that it came from a more pristine environment and was more mineral-rich than other spa muds from around the world.

Padawer’s line, Alaska Glacial Mud Co., offers three mud masks and two soaps. She said the glacial mud is hand-harvested from the Copper River Delta, screened, and then combined with all-natural ingredients includ-ing glycerine, safflower oil, vitamin E, and herbal ex-tracts.

“We typically go out after the high water of the year so we can harvest the particles that are so fine, they settle out of the water column,” she said. “When the river’s high, it goes up over banks, and we have pools, where we’re harvesting the finest sediment that settles in the water column. We’re looking for the cream.” n

HEN BARROW RESIDENT JONI EDWARDSON was growing up, she often watched her grandmother,

Dorothy Panningona, crafting booties, mittens, and seal-shaped Christmas ornaments out of seal fur.

dye and applying it in unconventional ways to create unique, wearable pieces. “I blend modern urban-type style with traditional,” she said of her crafts, which are made from seal fur that comes from her Iñupiat community’s sub-sistence hunts.

The hunts are for feeding the community, she said; seals are hunted for their meat, not their fur. She said they are never overharvested, and people use every part of the animal. That means there is always a small supply of seal skin for her to draw from

for making her crafts, which include fur earrings and bracelets, seal fur bowties with pewter ring centers, and seal fur clasp hand bags. Many of the items are bright pink or purple, or feature an ombre design, fading from a bright to a natural color.

Edwardson said she was experimenting years ago with blending traditional Iñu-piaq crafts with urban style forms, when an attempt to fix a seal oil-stained piece of seal fur gave her the idea for using fabric dye on the material.

She said she sells the bracelets, bowties and seal fur earrings on her etsy site, but only makes larger items like the ombre seal fur handbags on a commission basis.

“Some seal skins have become available, and my husband just picked them up for me, and I’ll be making some here pretty soon.”

NCE A YEAR, Anchorage artist Ed Mighell goes down to the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail with a dolly and five-gallon buckets, and harvests Cook Inlet glacial clay for use in his hand-made tiles.

Mighell, whose mother is from the village of Point Hope, said a 5,000-year tradition of ceramics in the Northwest Arctic involved collecting river clay to make hand-built pots. Artisans would “dig holes in the ground, put the pots in there with wood, light it on fire and cover it up. The

last lady to make pots that way died in 1880.”Mighell’s work harks back to this tradition of making ceramics from river clay, and the images he creates on his tiles often depict Iñupiat stories

and narrative themes of transformation.“I like to draw the inside of the animals, the ribs and the stomach and other internal organs,” he said. “There’s some transformation stories that seem to be

popular. I have a man in a half-man, half-halibut state, and this other one that’s a swan turning into a salmon.”Another tile design has a fox and a hare on it, which he said refers to a traditional tale of why night follows the day. In the story, fox is the moon and hare is the sun.People usually buy his tiles for a variety of purposes, he said, not just for use in kitchen or other counter and wall tiling. Sometimes people hang them for decorative pur-

poses, or use them as candle holders.Mighell’s tiles run $25 to $35 for four-inch size; $60 to $75 for six-inch; $120 to $140 for eight-inch; and $350 for 12-inch.His tiles are sold at the Anchorage Museum gift shop, Alaska Native Arts Foundation gallery, Octopus Ink, and Alaska Native Heritage Center gift shop.For more information about Ed Mighell’s work, go to his blog, at edmighell.wordpress.com. n
