FROM OUR PRINCIPAL Dear MSE Families,

Happy Fall! I can’t wait to see you this month at Fall Fest. Thank you to the Fall

Fest committee and many volunteers that will make this a fun night for our

children. Bring a lawn chair, visit with old friends, and get to know a few new

folks.

Can you believe that it is already time for the first report card? I hear our teachers

comment daily on how quickly the day passes and how much they want to

accomplish. How exciting to know that our children are engaged every day in

meaningful, learning experiences.

Thank you for making learning a priority. Thank you for your continued support.

Happy Fall,

Mrs. Johnston

Principal

FROM OUR PTO PRESIDENT

Our school never ceases to amaze me! What a huge success our fundraiser was.

Because of your generosity and efforts, we raised close to $60,000 this year. That’s

a lot of cookie dough and wrapping paper! THANK YOU! We truly have the best

fundraising chairs: Becky Covington, Jerrie Ann Thomas, Charlie Price and Dawn

Russell. We are so thankful for their leadership!

This cooler weather has all of us excited about our annual Fall Festival. Please plan

to join us on Friday, October 24th from 5-7 p.m. for this fun PTO sponsored event!

There will be some fun new activities this year as well as lots of old favorites. This

is always a great time to just relax and visit with other MSE families.

Thank you to so many of you for joining the PTO, signing up online to serve on

various committees and joining PACESETTERS. Your support is vital for us to

remain such a strong PTO. We truly appreciate you! If you haven’t had a chance to

join or sign up online, it is NEVER too late!

Happy Fall!

Goal 1: Academic Excellence (focusing on a child’s mind)

As you review your child’s report card, spend some time reflecting on the successes of the nine

weeks. The following ideas would make great discussions: discuss with your child the most

enjoyable unit of study; the most challenging unit; set goals for the next nine weeks; talk about

study habits and homework; look at your child’s backpack and binder…is it organized; or ask

your child about the library book being read. Make a commitment to carve out a little time that is

“parent-kid” time each day.

Goal 2: Arts Integration (focusing on a child’s heart/soul)

Thanks to the MSE PTO, Educational Theatre Inc. will be on campus October 2nd to perform the classical

story of Pinocchio. What a treat for our students to get to see a live theater production…right here at

MSE. The Pinocchio story makes a strong case for studying hard, caring for others, and telling the truth.

Thank you PTO and PACE setter donors for providing these experiences for MSE!!

Goal 3: Fitness and Wellness (focusing on a child’s body) The PE teachers are busy with the Presidential Fitness campaign pre-assessments. Have you heard your

students talk about running? Speaking of running, information will be coming home soon on how to sign up

for the Blue Cross Blues Marathon.

Fundraiser Update Wow! MSE’s students and parents were awesome supporters of our fundraisers! Both the Blue Ribbon Cookie Dough and

Charleston Wrap sales were enormous successes! Your hard work ensures that the wonderful arts programs, playgrounds, and

special touches that make MSE so great will continue to be funded! Mark your calendars and remember to pick up your orders

on October 23rd and 24th.

Congratulations to our outstanding sellers!

The top seller from each grade will receive a Google tablet! They are K-Walker Gary, 1-Londan Armstrong, 2-Avery Highfill, 3-Blake Bell,

4-Elijah Moses, and 5-Christopher Chaplain.

The runner-up in sales from each grade will receive a prize basket packed with lots of fun items! They are K-Lauren Ostendorf, 1-Anna

Chambers and Connor Green (tie), 2-Alana White, 3-Carter Fulton, 4-Journey Parker, and 5-Eva Albright.

Congratulations also to our classes who met their goal of 75% participation in the fundraisers. They will each receive a cookie cake and ice

cream party! They are Adcock, Amacker, Bonvillain, Brasher, Byron, Caldwell, Carlisle, Cooper, Davis, Davison, Dunigan, Farr, Goolsby,

Graves, Grimes, Hall, Harrelson, Herdon, Hines, Holaday, Iupe, Ivy, Jordan, Keirn, Krebs, Lyall, Magruder, Morgan, Pitts, Reis, Rigby,

Ruello, Ruhl, Rush, Sahler, Smith, Stuart, and Thomas.

Special congratulations to Mrs. Carie Lyall’s 4th grade class which had 100% participation!

The class parties will be scheduled soon, and the tablets and prize baskets will be awarded to the winners on October 24 th. Thanks so much

for your support!

Teacher Appreciation

Thank you all for your donations, help and support for our Teacher

Appreciation Kick-off! We treated our teachers to a "Big Salad" with

grilled chicken, sourdough bread and a chocolate dessert just perfect

for a tailgating on September 24.

Calling all cooks and domestic engineers! Our next meal is

Wednesday, October 29 -- we're featuring several recipes to celebrate

the fall season.

The TA committee is always buzzing with activity. In addition to our

monthly meals, we also treat the teachers with themed happies,

invitations to the lunches and lunch reminder treats. If you are

not already receiving the monthly sign-up emails and would like

to, please contact Julie Tipton, [email protected], to participate.

OCTOBER ARTIST OF THE MONTH Ann Biedenham Jones

Our artist of the month for October is Ann Biedenharn

Jones from Vicksburg, MS. She is an oil painting

instructor at Conservatory of the Arts at Church of the Holy

Trinity, Vicksburg. She is also the illustrator of Bayou

Town Books published by Pelican Publishing and has also

written and illustrated her own autobiography, Life and Art.

Ann is most recognizable for her oil paintings of children’s

portraits, pet portraits, and wildlife. She is able to capture

your child’s face and expression and put it on canvas by

simply looking at photographs of your child. She has even

been known to do this with pets too. This would make a

wonderful Christmas present. Commissions are welcomed,

and Ann Jones can be reached at annbiedenharnjones.com

or [email protected].

Your life and mine should be

valued not by what we take…

but by what we give.”
