Change. It happens here every fall. And it is wondrous. The reds and yellows of the leaves. The brilliant blue sky. The mist over Lake Susan early in the morning. The crisp night air and the crackling fires in the fireplace at the Assembly Inn. It is a change from the high season of summer.

Yet change is happening at a deeper level at Montreat Conference Center. Just consider this brochure. Its look has changed. In it you will see change spread across our offerings — from different types of youth conferences, shorter and more missionally focused, to adult events aimed at the church engaged with the culture that is no longer “churched” and is stunningly diverse, to new, more welcoming accommodations that may be the best you will find at any conference center.

Check out the change happening in Montreat. And come be our guest.

assembly inn renovationsAn update on the renovations to the Assembly Inn, Anderson Auditorium, and campaign for Montreat

The Building on the Tradition campaign has raised $11.4 of the $17 million goal. The first major campaign project is providing capital funding for the renovation of Assembly Inn. Originally completed in 1929, the 101 room Assembly Inn now has all new windows, an upgraded heating and air-conditioning system, and Wi-Fi, yet still maintains its mountain ambience. By May 2014, all guest rooms and public areas will be refurbished with new furniture, carpet, paint, art, lighting, and bedding.

Other capital projects in the campaign include a new roof for Anderson Auditorium, a major upgrade of Upper Anderson, and conferencing space on the third floor of Freeland Hall. Growing the number of donors and dollars in the annual Montreat Fund, which supports many of the loved traditions in Montreat, is a key piece of the campaign. Increasing the Endowment to provide ongoing resources for youth and adult programming and to keep Assembly Inn up to date is the final focus of the campaign. We welcome your support!

A quick look at this secluded mountain cove, who’s who, and what’s what

Montreat is a small town (population 630) located 20 minutes east of Asheville and two hours northwest of Charlotte. Montreat was founded in 1897 as a place where people could come for physical and spiritual renewal. Montreat Conference Center, Montreat College, and the incorporated town of Montreat, though separate institutions, share a rich history. We encourage you to stop by the Presbyterian Heritage Center the next time you visit to explore the fascinating and complicated history of Montreat.

All are welcome. You don’t have to attend a conference (or be Presbyterian!) to visit.

We’re just a half-day’s drive from Atlanta, Nashville, Charleston, Raleigh, and Richmond.

Visitors are just minutes away from access to the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Biltmore Estate, the NC Arboretum, and Asheville, voted one of the happiest cities in America.

Outdoor enthusiasts can explore 30 miles of wilderness trails.

Let us partner with you for your next event. We have the perfect setting for your business meeting, book club, non-profit training event, and more!

Jesus said, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” What does this mean for us? In our diverse, complicated world, who is our neighbor? How might we, as Christians, engage people of other faiths? And what does it even mean to engage persons who might look, believe, and act differently than ourselves? How do we start a faithful, holy conversation?

A Formative Gathering for Leaders of Youth | January 6-8, 2014 | Montreat.org/654

Adults who work with youth are uniquely endowed for their calling. They give their weekends and Sunday nights, their talents for being silly and serious, and their hearts and minds so that young people might know God’s love. Along the way they find themselves counseling, recreating, worshiping, praying, laughing and crying with youth and their families. This is a time for these adults to gather in a place set apart for renewal, fellowship, and inspiration.

Did God really need his son to die in orderto be able to forgive us?

While we commonly note that Jesus’ death on the cross “saves us from our sins,” the purpose of the cross isn’t only to save us from something, it is also to save us for something. Claim the gifts of the cross; the gifts God gives us to bring us joy.

Come together as a community of faith in this sacred place. Free of distraction, we will focus on the God who accepts us just as we are. While we have fun with friends, we will celebrate God through meaningful, creative, and interactive worship. Youth Conference is a unique gathering of young people from all over the country for a week of study, worship, and recreation. Activities include morning energizers, music, keynote, small group meetings, afternoon recreation activities, and evening worship.

There is a growing number of people in the U.S. who resist identifying themselves with a particular religious tradition. They are not atheists. They are not apathetic. They often describe themselves as people who are seeking to know God.

What can we learn about how churches and faith communities have failed to model a meaningful message, and what does that mean for the future of the church? How might we join with “nones” in our common quest to live in “interactive” relationship with God? Come to Montreat and explore what it might look like to fellowship with those who seek God outside the walls of the institutional church.

The Tree of Life: A Study of Israelite Wisdom Literature | June 2-6, 2014 | Montreat.org/719

The wisdom literature of ancient Israel (Proverbs, Job, and Ecclesiastes) invites us into an age-old and enduring conversation about what is good and wise and true in life. How do we discern right from wrong in a world of fiercely competing claims?

This study explores how the ancient Israelite sages address these and other complexities of everyday life, the formation of moral character, and what it means to “fear the LORD.”
