ROY FINK

2014 is the third season for Roy Fink as head coach of the University of New Haven men’s soccer program.

The fall of 2013 was a transitional season for theChargerswitharosterincluding10freshmenandfivesophomorescompared to just four juniors and two seniors. New Haven posted a 2-14-1 mark, with its wins coming at NE-10 foe Saint Anselm and inadramaticSeniorDayvictoryoverNE-10QuarterfinalistBentley. In 2012, the Chargers ran off three consecutive shutouts to record their first stretchof three-straight clean sheets since1997. Thespan included a 2-0 blanking of NYIT, the defending East Coast Conference champion. With a 3-1 start, New Haven men’s soccer alsoheldawinningrecordforthefirsttimesinceopeningthe2003season at 2-1. Another highlight from Fink’s inaugural campaign was a 2-1 overtime win at No. 15 Southern New Hampshire. The victory snapped a 21-match winless streak for the Chargers against the Penmen and markedNewHaven’sfirstdefeatofarankedopponentsince2008. Fink also mentored a trio of All-Northeast-10 student-athletes in 2012: Second Team honoree Clancy Purcell, Third Team selection Joseph D’Antonio and All-Rookie Team member Oskar Sewerin, who was also named the New Haven Male Rookie of the Year.

Prior to being named the 13th head coach in Charger men’s soccer history on June 1, 2012, Fink served four seasons as an assistant at

the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. His primary duties for the Minutemen included all aspects of player development, recruiting, coordinating the soccer academy and day-to-day operations. During his tenure, the Minutemen won the 2008 Atlantic 10 Conference Championship and advanced to the NCAA tournament. The native of Israel began his collegiate coaching career at his alma mater, the University of Tampa, in 2004. After two seasons with the Spartans, Fink spent another two years as the Director of Coaching at Strictly Soccer Futbol Club in St. Petersburg, Fla., where he trained and developed young soccer talent. His coaching experience outside of the collegiate ranks includes a stint with the Colorado Rapids U-23 team as an assistant and three years with the Western United FC in Massachusetts as a technical trainer. As a student-athlete, Fink enjoyed an outstanding career at the University of Tampa where he was the 2001 NSCAA Division II National Player of the Year after leading the Spartans to a national championship. A two-time NSCAA All-America selection and a CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree, Fink ranks third overall in career goals at Tampa and seventh all-time in the history of the Sunshine State Conference. After graduating, he also spent three seasons in the Premier Development League (PDL) for the Cape Cod Crusaders and Boulder Rapids. Prior to coming to America, Fink served three years in the Israeli Armed Forces, where he attained the rank of sergeant. He also was a starter for Israel’s Under-16/18 National Team and played 150 games in the Israeli Premiership and Division One leagues.

The Chargers posted a 6-9-2 record last fall, including road victo-ries at both defending East Coast Conference Champion NYIT and a No. 15 Southern New Hampshire program that went on to win the Northeast-10 crown and advance to the NCAA National Quar-terfinals.In2013,NewHaveneyesareturntotheNortheast-10Championshipforthefirsttimein2010insearchofitsfirst-everNE-10 postseason win in its sixth season as a member of the highly competitive conference.

Senior Ed-win Carvajal, junior Eric Robertson and sophomores Bobby Cruz and Cam Soltis will all spent time running the New Haven offense andasthefirstlineofdefenseasFink’sprimarymidfielders.

The lone returning member of the Chargers’ starting back row is sophomore Oskar Sewerin, a Northeast-10 All-Rookie Team pick and the UNH Athletics Male Rookie of the Year. In addition to

starting all 17 matches on the defensive end, the 6-foor-3 Sewerin picked up a goal and three assists as a key component of New Haven’s set pieces in the offensive zone.

Sophomore James Pyatsky will assume the starting spot in goal in 2013. Pyatsky appeared in six matches, including one start, totaling 233 minutes between the posts. He will be spelled by freshman Jason Smith, an All-Eastern Connecticut Conference goalkeeper at Ledyard High School last fall.

Ten additional newcomers will enter the fold for Coach Fink this fall. Bringing collegiate experience to Kayo Field is Chris Neil, who joins theChargers’midfieldwith two yearsof eligibility remain-ing after winning a pair of Region XXI Championships and earning First Team All-New England honors at Dean College.

The two newcomers traveling the farthest to West Haven are Emil Thomsen, abackfromVærløse,Denmark, andmidfielderOscarJohannesson from Hässleholm, Sweden. Connecticut natives Danny Manfredi and Rob Poirier, Massachusetts products Alain Laurent and Bikash Bhandari, Will Richard and Matt Dillon from New Jersey and New Yorker John LaTouche round out the list of new talent.

The NE-10 Championship will be held from Nov. 5-10 at campus sites with the higher seeds hosting throughout the eight-team, three-round tournament. NCAA postseason action begins on Nov. 15.

Roberto Taylor, Forward, (9173-74)Inducted 1984

Achieved success that only few soccer players can claim, earning recognition both on the collegiate and professional levels, both regionally and nationally. He transferred to New Haven in 1973 and became an instant contributor to the team even though he did not play soccer during his junior college days. He quickly earned a reputation for being a “jack of alltrades”becauseheplayedeverypositiononthefieldwiththeexceptionofgoalkeeper.Inhisfirstyear,TaylorhelpedtheteamearnanECACplayoffspot, leading the team in scoring with 33 points. For his effort, he earned All-New England honors, accolades he would also receive as a senior. Taylor made contributions each and every game during his two-year stay, scoring 25 goals in 26 games. He won the respect of his teammates as illustrated by his being named the team captain and most valuable player in 1974. Taylor later received the school’s Athlete of the Year award for his senior-year efforts. After leaving UNH, Taylor played two years of professional soccer, one with the American Soccer League and one with the North American Soccer League. He earned the ASL’s Rookie of the Year award before moving on to the NASL where he marked such legends as Pele.

Joseph Machnik, Coach/A.D. (1969-80)Inducted 1987

For 11 years the names Machnik and Charger Athletics were synonymous. He began his illustrious career as the head coach of the men’s soccer team, wherehefieldedsomenationalcaliberteamsover10seasons.In1970,hecoachedhisChargerstotheNAIAfinalsandtotheregionalsthenextseason.UNHthenqualifiedfortheprestigiousNCAARegionalsin1973and ’74, the NCAA Finals in 1976 and the Final Four in 1977. Named New England Intercollegiate Soccer League’s Coach of the Year two times he also served as the hockey coach for three seasons. “Dr. Joe” brought the same intensity and will to succeed to his position as the department’s Director of Athletics. In 1972, he was instrumental in elevating the athletic program by seeking and gaining Charger membership in the prestigious and competitive NCAA. A few years later, in 1975, he also introduced the women’sathleticprogramandgavethefinalapprovalontheproposalwhichupgraded the football and lacrosse programs from a club to a varsity sport.

John Kowalski, Assistant Coach/Back/Goalkeeper, (1969-72)Inducted 1988

Statistics do not justify the fine career output of Kowalski and his contribution to the soccer program, both as a player and as a coach. A stellar back for Coach Joe Machnik during his four seasons, he contributed heavily to the 19 shutouts posted by the team as he stopped the opposition before the goal. John could also be looked to when a back-up keeper was needed andhefilled inadmirablywhencalledupon.Thefour-year letterwinnerwas a three time All-New England selection and was a key part of teams thatparticipatedintheUniversity’sfirstECACandNCAAtournamentsinsoccer. Keith Russo, Back, (1980-84)Inducted 1990

Although he didn’t put any points on the scoreboard, Russo played a major role in New Haven’s success by not allowing the opposition to score any goals. As a defensive player, Russo was one of the reasons UNH was so successful in the early 1980s. He supplied the Chargers with outstanding defense and leadership during his career. Russo was a member of the 1981 defense which allowed only 10 goals in 20 games, a record which stood at his induction. During his stay, UNH posted a 56-15-7 record, including a school record 17 wins in 1983. His play earned him a great

deal of recognition, highlighted by All-America honors in both 1982 and 1983. Russo was also named to the All-New England team in three of his four years as a Charger. He played on two NCAA playoff teams during his career, advancing to the Regional Final in both seasons.

Rick Kessel, Goalkeeper, (1975-78)Inducted 1992

Kessel did more than just stop shots for the UNH soccer team. He was a driving force behind the Chargers’ advancement to the 1976 NCAA ChampionshipGameand to the1977NCAASemifinals.Kesselpostedseven shutouts in 1976, two more in the NCAA playoffs, and three in each ofhisfinaltwoseasons.Kessel’sleadershipandabilitytocomeupwithbig plays often while playing injured was a major contributing factor to the team’s success and to the development of its strong following. Kessel helped the Chargers earn four bids to the NCAA tournament and post a 48-13-10 record during his career. He registered 297 saves in four seasons which included a career-high 116 stops in 1976. He owned a career 1.05 goals against average, including three seasons in which he allowed less than one goal per game.

Don Wynschenk, Soccer & Tennis Coach/Admin., (1964-84)Inducted 1993

Wynschenk played an important role during his association with UNH. He contributed to the education process as a teacher, a tennis coach and as Director of Physical Education and Intramural Sports. Wynschenk taught a myriad of subjects during his tenure and served on many faculty committees which helped bridge the gap between the North and Main campuses. His intramural programs encouraged students to come to the North Campus even though they were not directly involved with intercollegiate athletics. Wynschenk acted as a consultant for the design of the North Campus Athletic Complex. He stressed the totality of being a student-athlete, emphasizing the importance of academic success as well as athletic achievement. Wynschenk received the respect and admiration of faculty, staff and students throughout his career.

Dr. Delfim Pereira, Midfielder, (1967-68 & 1970-71)Inducted 1995

For four years, Pereira contributed more than goals and assists to the Chargers soccer program. He was a leader, a player who helped his teammates in any way necessary to win games. Pereira was team captain in1969and1970andwasamajorforceinpropellingUNHtoitsfirstevernational tournament appearance, the NAIA Final 8. He played every position during his career, including goal keeper. In his sophomore year, an Achilles injury prevented him from running, forcing Pereira to the goal mouth where hewonhisfirstgameattheposition.Thenextgame,Pereirabrokehishandwhile in the goal forcing him out of the lineup, but only for a few games for he returned later that season. Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D., University PresidentSince becoming president of the University of New Haven in 2004, Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D. has led the University of New Haven through a period of remarkable growth and development. In the past seven years alone, enrollment has grown by 42 percent to more than 6,400 undergraduate and graduate students, who

hail from 35 states and some 45 countries. Full-time undergraduate enrollment has grown by 86 percent and applications have increased by 176 percent. During this time, the University has completed over $110 million in construction projects and has launched 17 new academic programs.

UNH now ranks among the top comprehensive universities in the North and boasts nationally ranked programs in a number of majors across business, criminal justice, engineering, forensic science, and the liberal arts and sciences. In recognition of his contributions to transforming the University, Dr. Kaplan was named “Businessman of the Year” by Business New Haven magazine in 2008.

President Kaplan also was awarded the 2011 William M. Burke Presidential Award for Experiential Education by the National Society for Experiential Education. The award recognizes President Kaplan’s efforts to make UNH a national leader in experiential education, requiring every undergraduate student to complete an internship, an academic service learning experience, international study or a faculty-mentored research

project before graduation.

Previously, Dr. Kaplan was chancellor and professor of English at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise, the only four-year branch campus of the University of Virginia and one of the nation’s best public colleges, according to U. S. News & World Report.

Dr. Kaplan began his teaching career in 1982 as an Instructor of English at the University of Maryland, European Division. From 1985-1989, he served as Visiting Lecturer in American Studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität, Tübingen, Germany – one of the oldest and most highly regarded universities in Europe. After completing his doctoral studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität, he returned to the U.S. to teach English at the University of Southern Colorado. Within three years, he was made department chair, serving in that capacity for two years before becoming Director of the Center for International Studies.

Dr. Kaplan also served as dean of Arts and Humanities at SUNY College at Buffalo and as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Butler University.

In addition to earning his Ph.D. in Comparative Literature at Eberhard-Karls Universität, Dr. Kaplan holds a Master of Arts degree (with a concentration in philosophy, German and English) from Eberhard-Karls Universität and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Los Angeles.

Dr. Kaplan is the author of a book on American translations of the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke; a book onTimO’Brien’sfiction, publishedbytheUniversityof

They share a great love for the visual and performing arts and have traveled to more than 30 countries during their 35 years together, including Tanzania, where they hiked up Mt. Kilimanjaro. They have a son and three daughters.

Dr. Kaplan grew up in Chicago, the son of a shoe store owner and an actress-comedienne. He said his stepfather, Irving Glovin, taught him to love ideas and appreciate the contributions we all need to make to good causes. The Northeast-10 Conference is an NCAA Division II conference that was established in 1979. The conference consists of 15 member institutions located throughout the Northeast in the states of Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont.

The institutions that make up the Northeast-10 are Adelphi University (Garden City, N.Y.), American International College (Springfield, Mass.), Assumption College (Worcester, Mass.), Bentley University (Waltham, Mass.), Franklin Pierce University (Rindge, N.H.), Le Moyne College (Syracuse, N.Y.), Merrimack College (North Andover, Mass.), University of New Haven (West Haven, Conn.), Pace University (Pleasantville, N.Y.), Saint Anselm College (Manchester, N.H.), Saint Michael’s College (Colchester, Vt.), The College of Saint Rose (Albany, N.Y.), Southern Connecticut State University (New Haven, Conn.), Southern New Hampshire University (Manchester, N.H.), and Stonehill College (Easton, Mass.).

The conference’s 15 member institutions are spread geographically from Syracuse, N.Y. to Waltham, Mass. and from Colchester, Vt. to Garden City, N.Y. Many of the members are located in or around the metropolitan areas of Albany, Boston, Manchester, New Haven, Worcester and New York City. The Northeast-10 was proud to welcome the New Haven and Adelphi in the conference’s latest expansion, adding to the powerful union of strong academic and athletic institutions.

The Northeast-10 has evolved into a membership committed to competitive athletics programs that emphasize the education, both on and off the field,ofmorethan6,000studentathletes.Amongthe many accomplishments of these institutions are NCAA Division II national championships in women’sbasketball, women’scrosscountry, fieldhockey, men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse, men’s soccer, women’ssoccer, women’strackandfield, and men’s and women’s swimming and diving.

The conference is coming off a banner season in 2013-14, as the Northeast-10 saw three teams claim national championships. First, the Southern New Hampshire University men’s soccer program won the NCAA Championship this past December, followed by the Bentley University women’sbasketballteamclaimingitsfirst-ever

title in March to cap an undefeated season. The Adelphi University women’s lacrosse program made it No. 3 after defeating Lock Haven, 7-5, in the title game in May.

A pair of Southern Connecticut State University student-athletes also won national championhips this past winter, as Nick Lebron won the individual national title in the haptathlon at the 2014 Men’s NCAA Division II Men’s Indoor Track & Field ChampionshipandRaymondCswerkofinishedfirstinthe400IMatthe2014NCAADivisionIIMen’s Swimming & Diving Championship.

From thefieldofplay to inside the classroom, the Northeast-10 honored a number of student-athletes for their academic accomplishments. Over 50 percent of all conference student-athletes earned a 3.0 GPA throughout the 2012-13 academic year and were named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll as a result. An astounding 138 student-athletes earned a perfect 4.0 GPA in the fall before 184 reached the benchmark in the spring. The Northeast-10 also honored 247 student-athletes as members of its academic all-conference teams.

The Northeast-10 also remains focused on its community endeavors, as its fundraising donations for Make-A-Wish is more than any other Division II conference in the country the past decade. The conference also announced a formal partnership last fall with Team IMPACT, anon-profitorganizationthatmatcheschildrenwith life-threatening illnesses with college sports teams. Currently, more than 40 Northeast-10 programs are currently matched with a Team IMPACT child.

Through the establishment and enforcement of regulations, the conference aims to encourage policies that enable intercollegiate athletics programs to contribute to and be considered an integral part of the total educational offerings at our member institutions. The Northeast-10 can look to a long history of success including the growth from seven original member institutions to more than double its size 34 years later, the contention for and winning of multiple national championships, and the recognition of student-athlete performances off the field and in theclassroom.
