Happy Birthday Q-TV

Happy 50th Birthday Q-TV:Celebrating Delta College Quality Public Broadcasting

During 2014, Q-TV celebrated its 50th anniversary! Over the years, Delta College’s public broadcasting operation has gone from black and white to full color and from analog to digital broadcasting. It has also expanded its potential audience from 800,000 viewers to 1.4 million viewers.

In 1962, Delta College built a 500-foot television tower on campus, as well as a Swiss chalet-style building – designed by architect Alden B. Dow – to house the station’s transmission equipment.Q-TV (then WUCM-TV 19) aired its first program – “What’s New,” a children’s program – in October 1964.

In 1969, Channel 19 joined PBS as one of its first affiliates and launched an experiment in the use of television as an educational and social medium. That experiment was “Sesame Street,” which is still being watched daily by children all across the Flint, Saginaw, Bay City, Midland and Thumb viewing areas.

In 2003, Q-TV became the first Michigan public broadcasting station to go full-digital and multicast four educational non-commercial program streams. Today, Q-TV is 100% digital and ready to meet the future of our community’s needs through programming that addresses community issues.

Q-TV, Delta College Public Television airs no advertising and is supported by donations, public contributions and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. For more information about the 50th anniversary and to see photos over the years, visit deltabroadcasting.org/blogs/50-years-quality.

New Celtic TraditionsAlways on the lookout for programs that showcase talent in our broadcast area, our producers visit small and large venues to find talent that deserves a larger audience. We have produced many music programs that feature jazz, classical and rock music shows. Q-TV is in production of its newest musical program, New Celtic Traditions.

The sounds of Celtic music are both easy listening and enticing. This genre is known because of the musical traditions that were kept by the Irish and Scottish people in the English speaking world, especially in the United States, where it had a profound impact on American music, particularly bluegrass and country.

This musical program will feature a small group of local Irish musicians from the Great Lakes Bay Region who come together regularly to share in the music of their homeland. This concert featuring Celtic music is bright and exciting. Q-TV is proud to bring these talented community members together and present them to our entire broadcast area.

Locally Produced

Settling In: Immigrants and Cultures that Built Mid-MichiganQ-TV is in production of its newest documentary, Settling In: Immigrants and Cultures that Built Mid-Michigan. The Great Lakes Bay Region is filled with proud neighborhoods that are populated by people from all over the world. Many diverse ethnic groups were drawn to the region as developing frontiers in Michigan paved the way for agricultural and industrial growth. And their populations increased as they settled into the Mid-Michigan area.

As each wave of immigrant settlement explored new work opportunities, faced labor challenges and developed neighborhoods, towns and cities, they brought their own unique cultural perspectives and traditions to Mid-Michigan. This new documentary will explore how these wonderful immigrants came to America, and how they survived and thrived amidst the challenges of starting a new life in a strange and unfamiliar land.

Q-TV has a rich history and tradition of being attentive to our viewer’s needs. Q-TV provides its viewers with programming that addresses their present and future concerns about health, environment, education, local and state government, arts, culture and quality of life.
