WeLcome To Fur rondy!

Welcome to the “hottest” winter festival in North America, the Anchorage Fur Rendezvous. This year marks the 79th

year of celebrating, participating and joining friends and family at over 100 events and activities at the “Rondy.” Whether you are new to Anchorage or longtime resident, this Rondy Guide is your road map to our 10 days of winter fun.

Our festival roots lay with a handful of events that were held over 3 days coinciding with the time miners and trappers came to town to barter and sell their yields in 1935. From those original events of basketball, skiing, hockey, boxing and holding children’s dog sled races and community dance, the festival has grown to over 100 events keeping to our roots of winter sports, family and cultural & native activities.

The events and activities featured in his Official Rondy Guide range from the traditional such as the World Championship Sled Dog Races, Fur Auction, Rondy on Ice, GCI Snow Carving, Charlotte Jensen Native Arts Market, All Alaskan Native Basketball Tournament to the fun and unique such as the snow shoe softball tournaments, pond hockey, Miners and Trappers Ball, Jim Beam Jam, Frostbite Footrace and Costume fun run, Out House races and the one and only – Rondy Running of the Reindeer.

This year, five new events will join the Rondy fun schedule. The Great Alaskan Talent Show will feature and discover Alaskan talent. The Alaska Rondy Cornhole & Washers Tournament brings to Alaska two popular games that as a youth you may have played. The new Wacky Rondy Winter Sports Center will feature the Waiter and Waitress Challenge Relay, the Rondy Yukigassen (snowball

From the rondy presidentbattles), the new Leaf Blower Air Hockey – 5 a side blowing a whiffle ball, truly a wacky twist to outdoor hockey, an outdoor badminton tournament and disc golf distance challenge.

This year’s unique Rondy collector pin of the Wooly Mammoth was designed by Alaskan artist Tara Gildow. This prehistoric resident and state fossil was mighty in size like Alaska as well as prepared to endure the long winters like our early pioneers. Our Booster Button was designed by Alex Pouzanov, a 4th grade student in the Russian Immersion program at Turnagain Elementary School. His design depicting Alaskan native youth playing under the northern lights just might happen at Rondy.

The festival however could not be a reality if it was not for our community partners, event awesome sponsors, the many volunteers and all of the people contributing to our success with the purchasing of Rondy pins and memberships. These opportunities to be a partner in Rondy’s success help the festival but also the many nonprofit organizations that produce many events as fundraisers for their fine work in the community.

Please consider this your invitation from the Board of Directors and staff of Fur Rendezvous to have fun at your award winning winter festival. Stop by our Rondy Shop and join our partner Café Darte for that extra energy need. Thank you for your support so lets rondy on!!

In the mid-sixties the university Kiwanis came up with the idea of being Keystone Kops, enforcing the tradition of having to wear a Fur Rondy pin or button when a person is in attendance at any of the winter festival activities. Their Kiwanis club constructed a couple of portable jails where they good-naturedly incarcerate “villains” who are not wearing a Fur Rondy pin or button. One way to stay out of jail (or get back out) is to purchase a pin or button from the Keystone Kops who, coincidently, sell them!

This project is their largest fundraiser. They receive a percentage of the pin and button sales for their efforts, netting approximately $10,000 to $20,000 annually. These proceeds go back into the community via their many projects – predominantly to the four Key Clubs and a KCI club they sponsor each year. Starting around Thanksgiving, they staff a pin sales table each weekend at different locations throughout Anchorage to sell the current year’s pins. Also, members individually sell the pins and buttons through the winter months as do some of their Key Clubs. During the actual Fur Rondy festival they are on

the streets downtown, in local establishments, in the parade, and at other events actively selling pins. They also have their own pin design, new each year, which they sell at the same time.

Although this is their largest fundraiser, it is also a community service project. Over the years the Keystone Kops have become recognized as the face of the Fur Rondy celebration. They appear in their Kop outfits (looking like British Bobbies with many Fur Rondy pins on their coats) at many public functions to advertise the event. They also appear on television raiding the newscasts to arrest local newscasters who do not have a Fur Rondy pin. All of this is done in good-natured fun to promote the winter carnival. During the event they serve as ambassadors for the festival, providing information and directions to many visitors. They are in hundreds of photos, posing with visitors, from around the world, who want their picture

taken with a Keystone Kop.

For more information, or to learn how you can join the fun and become a Keystone Kop, visit www.anchorageuniversitykiwanis.org.

2014 pin Artist:

Tara gildow Tara was born in Anchorage, Alaska, and raised on stories from the Iditarod Trail and ShannonCartwright illustrations. She graduated from Diamond High School in 2000, and went on topursue a bachelor of fine art in painting from the Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland,OR. She is currently happy to finger paint side-by-side with her 2 year old, Olivia. In 1996, she won the Fur Rondy booster button contest which she thought was pretty muchthe coolest thing to happen to her, until she won the 2014 pin contest. She chose for her designa representation of the state’s fossil, the woolly mammoth. It was not a tough decision to workwith this image for her, as she has often pondered life in Alaska’s distant past, imagining thestate overrun with lions, horses, mammoths, and short-faced bears. Tara spends most of her time daydreaming about working on her next art projects, as well asteaching her daughter about the beauty of Botticelli, the grandeur of the Cretaceous, and thefiner points of making a cardboard fort.

2014 Booster Button designer:

Alex pouzanov Alex is 10 years old and he attends 4th Grade at Turnagain Elementary School in Anchorage. He knew about the Booster Button Contest Competition from a flyer posted at his school. Alex was born in Alaska and speaks fluent Russian. This summer he worked in the Saturday Kid’s Market and enjoyed visiting a native art booth. Alex developed a love for native art, bone carvings, handmade dolls, yo-yo’s. Alex’s designs depicts Eskimo children and the northern lights.

About rondy pins and ButtonsThe first Rondy pins were created in 1939. Each year, artists compete to design the official pin and local students do the same in a booster button contest. These pins and buttons become Collector’s items. Some pins are worth thousands of dollars!

overviewBegun in 1946 as part of Fur Rondy, the World Championship Sled Dog Races have become a cornerstone event of the festival. Mushers from all over Alaska, the nation, and the world participate for the title of fastest sprint mushing team. The race is held over three days; the fastest total time recorded wins.

Countless people and entities support this race: The Municipality of Anchorage supplies police officers, snow fencing, and snow placement and removal for the street portion. The Alaskan Sled Dog & Racing Association, or ASDRA, grooms and sets snow fencing for the other 21 miles of trails. Fur Rondy raises the purse and promotes the race. ASDRA volunteers manage and operate the race. Sponsors also support the race.

The trail follows 4th Ave. east to Cordova St. where mushers turn south. At the bottom of Cordova Hill the trail moves to the bike/ski trails along Anchorage’s greenbelt. Here the teams are challenged by long dark culverts under the Seward Highway and Lake Otis Parkway. The trail has two large pedestrian overpasses over Northern Lights Blvd. and Tudor Road separated by a trail through a popular dog park. Six miles into the trail the teams hit the designated sled dog trails of Tozier Track. Fourteen miles later the trail again heads back across the Tudor Road pedestrian overpass to downtown Anchorage.

Be a good spectator• Find a good viewpoint behind the trail edge.• Teams leave at one or two minute intervals and often are closely spaced. Faster teams may have even passed a competitor.• Look for dogs running well with their heads and tails down showing concentration on their effort. Tug lines will be tight. Be aware that sudden movements or flashbulbs may startle dogs and break their concentration. You will see the head and tail go up if this occurs.• Mushers will only ask for help if needed. dogs often are shy of unfamiliar people.• Getting entangled in a dog team can be very hazardous for you and the dogs.• A dog team traveling at up to 20mph takes up to 50 feet to come to a stop.• Sled dogs run very quietly. you may not know they are coming until you hear, “Trail!” or worse, you are entangled in the lines because the musher could not see around a corner.• your pet dog will not enjoy watching sled dog racing events. A fast moving team will frighten most dogs. They also are a distraction to the racing or training dog team. Do not bring your family pets to dog mushing events.

There are fewer people capable of throwing a 90mph fastball than there are CEO’s of fortune 500 companies. In a similar way there are few dogs that have the physical and mental attributes it takes to be a competitive Fur Rondy sled dog. Each arm of the sled dog sport poses its own set of challenges for the canine athletes that compete in them. Distance dogs must have legendary stamina and steel-like mind sets to survive the grueling hours and environmental extremes they face in their races. On the other end of the spectrum, limited class sprint dogs reach white knuckle speeds for short distances. If we compare the performance of these dogs with the physiological limits nature has set for the canine athlete we can begin to appreciate the prowess of the Fur Rondy dog. Distance racing dogs, while working for hours on end; generally work between 40 and 60% of their maximal capacity. Limited class sprint dogs work at 90-95% of maximal capacity for 12- 30 minutes at a time. Dogs competing in the Fur Rondy are asked to maintain intensities similar to limited class sprint dogs, around 90% of maximum, for around an hour and a half. This combination of speed and endurance makes the selection criteria for these athletes very narrow indeed. If you want to put numbers on all this compare a Rondy dog to one of the best human athletes of all time, Lance Armstrong. When you try to define the limits of performance the measurement most often used is the maximal rate of oxygen consumption or “VO2 max.” This give you an idea of the amount of sustainable power output an athlete is capable of producing each minute per unit of body weight. Lance Armstrong has one of the highest VO2 max measurements ever recorded in a human at 82 ml/kg/min. I have measured several of the dogs running in my team and most have a VO2 max of about 240 ml/kg/min. That means that dogs competing in the Fur Rondy can burn oxygen at three times the rate that Lance Armstrong can. I tell people this is why we ride on the sled and they pull it! These superb athletes did not appear by chance. Each Fur Rondy dog is the product of tens of generations of an intensive breeding and selection process. This process began in villages along the river and costal regions of Alaska and

has continued to evolve today with the introduction of European bloodlines. The focus of these breeding programs has been the creation of a dog with a unique combination of speed and endurance and a mind capable of navigating the challenges of the urban Anchorage trail system. This last component is no small feat; in fact the Rondy has been referred to as “the steeple chase of dog mushing.” Teams pass through 8 culverts multiple foot bridges, and even 4 and 6 lane

highways on elevated pedestrian bridges. Add to that crowds of people, trailside barbeques, loose dogs, kids throwing snowballs, school children cheering and over 2 miles of on the street racing and you have an event that not only taxes the body but challenges the mind of even the most seasoned athlete. To do well in the Rondy truly is the pinnacle of dog mushing. Successful teams conquer what is likely the toughest combination of physical and mental tests in the sport. Other races may go further or require more peak speed but no race combines the speed over distance with the mental challenges of the Rondy. This is why the Rondy has been used by all other arms of the sport as the source of breeding stock. Nearly all dogs running in the Iditarod can trace their origins back to dogs from Fur Rondy teams. This is also true for mid-distance and limited class sprint teams. While no one can argue that it takes a great dog to compete in these other arenas of the Dog Mushing World, the truth is the very best athletes run down 4th avenue for three days in a row on the last weekend in February. If you ever wonder why there are

fewer teams running competitively in the Rondy than in long distance, mid-distance, or limited class sprint races remember the statement from the beginning of this article. There are fewer dogs that have the athletic prowess to run nearly 20 mph for 90 minutes than there are that can run really far for a long time or really fast for a short time. Like the 90 mph pitcher, the elite Rondy dog is a rare and gifted athlete.

Anchorage’s annual Fur Rendezvous celebrates its 79th year in 2014. National Geographic calls it the best winter festival in the world. Alaskans call it Rondy for short, because, really, who can spell “ren-dez-vous”? Begun as a three-day event in 1935 to coincide with the arrival of miners and trappers selling their bounty in town, Rondy has blossomed into a ten-day festival for kids of all ages. Contests and culture, sled dog races and snow sculptures, fur auctions and fireworks—Rondy has something for everyone!

Brave Anchorage in February, run with the reindeer, have a Rondy Brew or two. We dare you!
