    USA Tour

    Coppélia

    Allegro five short ballets

the vodafone season of A Christmas Carol

  • WE ARE VERY EXCITED TO INTRODUCE OUR 2014 SEASON TO YOU

The Royal New Zealand Ballet’s 2014 programme builds on all the great things achieved in 2013, an acclaimed Triple Bill and a smash hit Vodafone Season of Swan Lake, and also, at the time of launching, TOWER Tutus on Tour — we couldn’t have had a better year to celebrate the company’s 60th birthday.

Following the success of our 2013 China tour, we’re excited to be returning to the USA in January 2014, with performances in some of the country’s most prestigious dance venues. Returning home, our national tour of Coppélia brings one of ballet’s most enduring classics back to New Zealand stages, combining classical precision with comedy and a touch of magic.

Allegro, our winter season of five short ballets, shows off the RNZB’s versatility, from the thrilling exactitude of Balanchine, to the New York magic of Larry Keigwin (Final Dress, NYC), to a brand new work by New Zealand choreographer Daniel Belton, tailor made for the RNZB.

The year is rounded out with The Vodafone Season of A Christmas Carol, a dazzling retelling of Dickens’ classic Yuletide tale, perfect for family celebrations and festive treats.

To all our supporters, especially The Ministry for Culture and Heritage, Te Manatū Taonga, National Sponsor Vodafone, The Lion Foundation, Pub Charity and our many other sponsors, funders and personal supporters, thank you for being a part of the RNZB family in 2013.

We look forward to seeing you at the ballet in 2014.

COPPÉLIA COMBINES LAUGHTER, MYSTERY, ROMANCE AND THE FINEST CLASSICAL BALLET — FROM SPECTACULAR CHARACTER DANCES TO THE GRAND ROMANTIC PAS DE DEUX — IN A FUN-FILLED SPECTACLE

Jack-the-lad Franz is infatuated with the beautiful Coppélia without realising she is in fact a life-sized doll, created by the mysterious inventor Dr Coppélius.

His feisty fiancée Swanhilde is disgusted by his disloyalty, but when Franz’s life is in danger, she tricks the doctor by disguising herself as Coppélia (the doll) in order to save her love. Crisis averted, the couple marry and celebrate with their friends in the village square.

New Zealand dance legend Sir Jon Trimmer reprises the great character role of Dr Coppélius, a role he first performed for the Royal New Zealand Ballet in 1964.

  • THE ROYAL NEW ZEALAND BALLET PRESENTS ALLEGRO — A POWERHOUSE OF FIVE DYNAMIC BALLETS FROM LEADING INTERNATIONAL CHOREOGRAPHERS

    ALLEGRO BRILLANTE

Precision, musicality, virtuoso technique — Russian classicism meets New York flair in a breathless display of classical ballet at its finest.

    LES LUTINS (‘THE GOBLINS’)

Flirty and fun, two male dancers compete for the attention of a single female with increasingly daredevil moves — things are not what they seem following the addition of a violinist and pianist to the stage.

    SATELLITES

This new piece, specially created for the RNZB, will include electronic music, animation and kinetic sculpture integrated with the dance.

Larry Keigwin’s Final Dress, created for the RNZB in 2012, caused a sensation. We are proud to introduce two more works by Larry Keigwin to New Zealand audiences as part of Allegro.

    MATTRESS SUITE

Created in 2003, Mattress Suite is made up of six scenes about love affairs, either on or near a mattress.

    MEGALOPOLIS

‘Mr Keigwin made dynamite choices in Megalopolis, a divinely well-structured encounter between formalism and club culture.’ — The New York Times, 2009

Larry Keigwin’s style fuses Broadway, club culture and the worlds of fashion and burlesque.

  • THE VODAFONE SEASON OF

    a christmas carol

A DAZZLING RETELLING OF DICKENS’ CLASSIC YULETIDE TALE, PERFECT FOR FAMILY CELEBRATIONS AND FESTIVE TREATS

Ebenezer Scrooge lives up to his name until one Christmas Eve he is visited by four ghosts, one a remorseful ex-business partner, the others, the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future.

Following revelations of joy, warmth and life, Scrooge is also shown darkness, despair and sadness until finally his cold heart is restored to goodwill and happiness by the power of Christmas.

This acclaimed production, created for Northern Ballet — a company noted for its strength in storytelling and creating works as appealing to children as they are to adults (and which brought us Dracula) — and now seen for the first time outside the UK, is an adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol. The setting is picture-perfect Victorian and the staging is lively and vivid.

Music for the production was specially created by celebrated film and television composer Carl Davis and includes familiar Christmas carols.

Memberships start from $30 per year, or $20 per year for Young Friends. Friends receive a 15% discount on tickets (two tickets per production, per venue) and a discount at some RNZB Dance Explorer events, as well as regular newsletters and invitations to special events. For information, phone Susie Jones, National Administrator, on (04) 381 9018.

THE BALLET FOUNDATION OF NEW ZEALAND TRUST

A lifetime of enjoying the magic of ballet can be honoured by planning a contribution, of any size, that will continue into the future. Remembering The Ballet Foundation of New Zealand in your will means that generations to come can enjoy world-class ballet right here at home.

The Ballet Foundation of New Zealand is an independent charitable trust created to advance professional classical ballet in New Zealand. The Foundation aims to build up an endowment fund from which it will make grants, ensuring that the RNZB and all professionals involved with the art form in this country receive greater opportunities for artistic growth. • THE DRESS CIRCLE

The Dress Circle supporters’ programme offers a further level of involvement for patrons wanting a closer relationship with the company, and current Friends who would like to increase their support. Personalised communication throughout the year provides members with special insight into the work of the RNZB, and events held around the country offer an opportunity to go behind the scenes and meet with dancers, artistic staff, and company management.

Memberships start from $250, with members receiving two complimentary tickets per $1,000 donation. If you would like to discuss supporting a special project, or are considering a major gift to the company, we would love to meet you to discuss how we could work with you.

    PARTNER A DANCER

The RNZB’s Partner a Dancer programme is a special opportunity to engage meaningfully with the work of the company, through an association with a single dancer. By following your dancer, you will gain special insights into the dancers’ professional lives: from first rehearsals to final bows.

Over the course of each year, you will see your dancer take on different roles and develop as a performer. Invitations to special events, and opportunities to meet with your dancer and RNZB management, provide further opportunities to enjoy a close association with the company.

The RNZB is grateful to the organisations and individuals who make up our Dress Circle and Partner a Dancer programmes. To join, phone Liesl Nunns, Philanthropy Manager, on (04) 381 9030.
