A Camp visit is for schools planning to spend more than one day on-site. These schools will be given multiple activity options and plenty of time to explore. Accommodation and catering can also be arranged at additional cost. You only pay entry once!

A Full-Day visit takes over 4 hours on-site, allowing deeper exploration of the Outdoor Museum. It can include additional activitiesand extend into the night.

Full-DayA Short-Day visit is ideal for schools with limited time. A Short-Day visit would typically be less than 4 hours on-site. It would include some free activities and some time to explore.

Living in the PastYr 3-6. 50 mins Students experience aspects of daily life 150 years ago and compare their lives with those of the past.

Goldrush ImmigrationYr 3-6. 50 minsStudents explore the stories of goldrush immigrants and discover their reasons for coming and the legacies they left behind.

Chinese on the GoldfieldsYr 3-6. 50 minsStudents experience aspects of 19th century Chinese culture and discuss the discrimination faced by Chinese diggers in Victoria.

Put Yourself in the Eureka StoryYr 3-6. 50 mins By dressing up as characters in the Eureka story and using museum exhibits to create pictures of the key events of Eureka, students can make a book or slideshow at school. *Digital camera required.

Gold FeverYr 5-6. 50 mins Students join the ‘rush’ to One Eye Gully. By re-living the highs and lows of gold fever and role-playing the varied experiences of the diggers, gold buyers and troopers, they experience the frustrations that led to Eureka.

Goldfields TechnologyYr 5-6. 90 mins Students design and build a model to solve a real goldfields problem and explore simple machines. *Cost $2 per student.

Tales from the Putrid PastYr 5-6. 50 minsMaggoty meat, smelly sewage, uncomfortable underwear and deadly diseases … believe it or not!

One session per class with our Education Officers is included in your entry cost (except where specified). Choosing the right session will allow you to link your visit to the curriculum and help your students enjoy a richer learning experience at Sovereign Hill. Movements of PeoplesYr 9. 45 minsThe gold rushes saw mass migrationto Australia on an unprecedented scale. Who came and why? Were their hopes and dreams delivered?

The Industrial Revolutionin AustraliaYr 9. 45 minsStudents experience Sovereign Hill’s collection of working steam engines to explore how the Industrial Revolution affected living and working conditions in Australia. They compare the strength of horse and muscle to the mighty steam engine.

VCE SessionsYr 11-12. 60 minsHistory, Outdoor Education, Geography, Health and Human Development, and Tourism sessions can be tailored to suit the needs of each group.

The Anti-Chinese LeagueYr 7-10. 45 mins An immersion in racial attitudes on the goldfields through a powerful and confronting play. Followed by an opportunity for students to debrief and explore the issues raised.

Eureka and Australian DemocracyYr 7-10. 45 mins Students explore what drove the diggers to rebel against the government in 1854. They learn about key figures and events in the campaign for justice and consider the significance of this uprising.

Red Hill Mine Tour All ages. 15 minsThis free self-guided tour tells the story of the discovery of the massive Welcome Nugget –more than 2,000 ozs of gold!

Gold Pour DemonstrationAll ages. 20 minsAt the Gold Smelting Works, students can learn about the science behind the melting and purification of a $180,000 gold ingot.

Gold PanningAll ages.Students can head to the diggings to pan for real gold in the creek. It’s ‘finders-keepers’ and you can stay as long as you like!4

Teddy’s VisitYr F-2. Bring your class teddy and photograph his adventure at Sovereign Hill for literacy activities back at school.

Sovereign Hill SnapshotsYr 3-6. Choose a topic and collect photos to develop a presentation back at school.

The Secret Chamber The inspiring story of two Chinese brothers who sought their fortune in Victoria’s ‘New Gold Mountain’.

Trapped The dramatic story of the 1882 disaster that struckin the New Australasian No. 2 Mine at Creswick.

Gold Museum Students will see real gold nuggets and explore science, technology, art and documents as evidence of life on the goldfields. A visit to the Gold Museum is included in your Sovereign Hill entry.

This peaceful 2,000-hectare property has pristine bush reserves, restored forests, healthy waterways and sheep grazing lands. Sustainable farming is carefully balanced with enhancing the land’s biodiversity, increasing the habitat for native wildlife and planting further trees.
