Welcome to Starburst 2014
The committee would like to thank you for attending this evening’s entertainment. We hope you will enjoy yourself and tell others about Starburst so that they may come next year.
The business community has sponsored this event through their donations to this booklet. Without them there wouldn’t be a Starburst. We encourage all of you to support these busi-nesses as a way of thanking them for supporting us.
If you would like to become a part of the Starburst Com-mittee or want information concerning making a donation in next year’s booklet, please write to us at Starburst, P.O. Box 621, Leominster, MA 01453. We are always looking for new ideas, new members, and new sponsors.
We would be remiss if we did not thank our Premier Cor-porate Sponsor Leominster Credit Union — and special thanks to the Leominster Cultural Council for also supporting us and also to our corporate co-sponsors.
Thanks to Jeff Boisseau and Stage Lighting Unlimited for a superb sound system.
Enjoy the concert and reworks.

DONNA DININNO2014 Citizen of the Year
Donna DiNinno’s lifelong interest and advocacy in public education has its roots in her own educational experiences. She believes that as it did for her, education opens the door to opportunity. The promise of public education to help all children succeed is as important today as it ever was.
Donna was born in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1954, and spent her rst few years in West Boylston. She moved to Lawrence where she attended public schools, proudly participated in the Girl Scouts, and graduated from Lawrence High School in 1971. Like many young people, Donna worked part-time through high school and college, while still focusing on academics and extra-curricular activities. Donna is a 1975 graduate of Fitchburg State College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Technology. She completed a year of professional studies at Newton Wellesley Hospital where she began her career. She also completed two years of graduate studies in medical laboratory sciences at Northeastern University.
In 1979, Donna married Dr. Nick DiNinno, who she met at Fitchburg State College in the Condike Science Building where they shared many classes together. Following their marriage, Donna began work at Burbank Hospital as the Hematology Supervisor, later becoming the coordinator of the Burbank Hospital School of Medical Technology. In 1984, with the birth of their rst child, Nicholas, Donna left Burbank to assist in the start- up of PrimeMed Immediate Care Center, where she worked part-time for sixteen years as their laboratory director. Also during that time, Nick and Donna welcomed their second child, Christina to the family. She continued her work with medical technology students by becoming a teaching instructor in the Clinical Laboratory Science program at Fitchburg State College from
17
1992-1998. Currently, Donna is the business manager for DiNinno Family Dental, where she enjoys working with her husband and her son Nicholas, who is also a practicing dentist.
Donna’s avid interest in supporting public education in Leominster began in 1989, when her son Nicholas entered kindergarten at Northwest Elementary School. Mentored by many talented and dedicated parents, teachers and principals, Donna became an active classroom volunteer and PTO member serving as their president for four years. During that time, with the help of many dedicated volunteers, the Northwest Elementary School PTO held numerous successful fundraisers, creating many fun-lled, cultural and educational experiences for the students and their families. Donna also served for several years on the Northwest School Advisory Council, gaining invaluable insight into collaborative group work.
When her children began studies at Leominster High School, Donna continued her involvement, serving as the LHS PTO president for six years. During this time, the PTO took on the primary responsibility of the Renaissance Program, which continues to this day, providing students with leadership opportunities and recognizing them for excellence in academics and good citizenship. The PTO also played a key role in launching the Community Service Learning Program, which continues to provide internship and community service opportunities for high school students.
Donna was rst elected to the Leominster School Committee in 2003 as an at- large member. For nine years, she served as vice-chairwoman, and among other responsibilities, led the committee through several successful superintendent searches and professional development opportunities such as the District Governance Support Project, a leadership program focusing on the development of governance practices that support student achievement. The positive impact was recognized, when the Leominster School Committee received an All State School Committee Award in 2012. Donna has served on the Negotiations Committee for eleven years and participates in the District Capacity Project, a multi-year Massachusetts Educational Partnership initiative for improving student achievement through labor-management collaboration. She was a member of the Policy Committee for ten years, helping to draft and prepare district handbooks and policy manuals. She currently serves on the Finance and Audit Committees and is a member of the LHS Building Committee overseeing the $44.4 million renovation and expansion project for Leominster High School.
Finally, it should be noted that this year marks the 60th anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education, a law which opened the door of educational opportunity to all young people in this country. Donna has served with the same spirit and commitment in the hope that every child in Leominster will have equal access to the highest quality education.
Donna would like to recognize the talented and dedicated members of the Leominster School Committee, and all school volunteers, who make a positive difference in children’s lives on a daily basis.
Donna would like to thank her husband, Nick, and their children, Nicholas and his wife Mito, and Christina and her husband Eric for their encouragement, inspiration, and love.
